DEATH TOLL IN AFGHAN EARTHQUAKE RISES AS BODIES ARE PULLED FROM THE RUBBLE

According to Afghan Taliban officials, more than 2'400 people have been killed in a devastating 6.3 magnitude Earthquake that hit the drought-stricken Herat region of Afghanistan on Saturday. The Herat region of Afghanistan is home to more than 1.9 million Afghans and the region is renowned for its abundant, top quality crops.

According to a statement from the United Nations Humanitarian Office, all of the homes in the Zindajan district of Herat have been leveled, burying survivors in rubble, leaving many homeless throughout the region as winter approaches, and creating major challenges for aid organizations to provide food, clothing and shelter.

Afghans are already suffering under a crushing sanctions regime imposed by the Biden Administration, complicating rescue and aid efforts for the Taliban government while the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have suspended aid to the impoverished country which had been occupied by US and NATO forces for two decades.

"The operation is still going on, still some people are being pulled out of the rubble,” the spokesman of Heart’s governor, Nissar Ahmad Elyias told reporters.

"Many people have come from far-flung districts to get people out from the rubble,” said Khalid, 32, at Kashkak in Zindajan district 30 kilometers northwest of Herat city, capital of the same-named province.

“Everyone is busy searching for bodies everywhere, we don’t know if there are others as well under the debris.”

“Many of our family members have been martyred, including one of my sons, and my other son is also injured,” Herat resident Mir Ahmed told Reuters at a hospital that was treating many survivors.

“Most of the people are under the rubble.”

Early Intervention

When Zika virus crosses the placenta to infect a foetus in a pregnant woman, it attacks life before it’s had a chance to establish itself, like squashing a seed before planting it. In particular, the virus infects starter cells for the nervous system, neural progenitor cells, thus causing wide-reaching developmental problems down the line. To investigate how these impacts take hold, researchers examined these cells in the lab, and focused on a protein called UPF1, which manages mRNA – transcripts of genes being expressed. Infected cells have less UPF1 and the researchers saw that as a result, transcripts (red) become stuck in the cell nucleus (blue) in cells infected with Zika (green, right), compared to uninfected (left). This reduces the production of proteins from those transcripts, such as one called FREM2, required to maintain and determine the identity of neural progenitor cells, and so hinders healthy development from the start.

Apni Party demands the holding of party-based elections for Panchayats and ULBs

Srinagar, May 18: Apni Party on Thursday demanded the holding of upcoming Panchayat and ULB polls on party-bases.

The demand came to the fore after the party passed a resolution seeking party-based election for the proposed Panchayat and ULB polls. The resolution, presented by the party's State Secretary Muntazir Mohiuddin and supported by Provincial President Mohammad Ashraf Mir, received unanimous approval.

Besides senior leaders, the meeting held at the party headquarters in Srinagar, was attended by all the zonal leaders and senior workers from the Srinagar district, a press release said.

On this occasion, the party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari asked the party leaders and grassroots cadres to prepare themselves for the forthcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and Panchayat polls and assured them that with the significant public support received by the Apni Party, it will emerge as the primary victor in the electoral contest.

According to the press release, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, while addressing the meeting, said that, unlike the traditional political parties, Apni Party would refrain from engaging in political gimmicks and the politics of false promises, instead it would promise to implement its robust developmental agenda.

He said, "As we know, it has become a common practise for traditional political parties to allure their voters through deceptive promises and emotional slogans. However, we firmly believe in upholding the trust of our people, so we will never mislead them. Instead, we will guarantee our voters that we will implement our development agenda if we are mandated to serve them."

Urging party leaders and grassroots cadres to gear up for the upcoming ULB and Panchayat polls, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said, "It is of utmost importance for you to stay connected with the masses in your respective constituencies. By doing so, you can raise awareness among the voters regarding our party's vision and objectives."

He further said, "Besides making people aware of our agenda and policies, we also must make them aware of the deceptive politics of the traditional political parties, who have always misled the people through deceptive political narratives that eventually brought miseries to the people over the course of the past several decades."

"Their misleading political narratives and emotional slogans have landed thousands of youths either in jails or in graveyards, especially during the past three decades. Therefore, it becomes our responsibility to remind people of the false promises made by these parties. The hollow rhetoric and deceptive promises such as guaranteeing a "plebiscite," "autonomy," "self-rule," and other similar pledges have resulted in the incarceration or loss of thousands of young lives during all these years. Apni Party will not allow this political gimcrackery to continue any further because the J&K people cannot bear the burden of further bloodshed, destruction, and loss of life. It is imperative that we prevent any more suffering in this region." He added.

Family Of Pakistani Journalist Says He Is Missing, Police Deny Claim

Many social media users have expressed concern over the disappearance of Abid Mir.

The family of a Pakistani journalist has claimed that he is missing since Wednesday, according to Dawn. Abir Mir, who also works as a human rights activist in Balochistan, was last seen at an ATM in capital Islamabad on February 8, according to his family. However, the Islamabad Police said on Twitter on Thursday that Mr Mir returned home, but the claim has been denied by his family, the outlet added. As the news about Mr Mir's disappearance spread, social media users expressed concern and demanded that he should be brought back.

Mr Mir's brother Khalid posted a video on Twitter yesterday in which he said that the journalist was in touch with his family and friends till 6.30pm and then disappeared.

Khalid further said that the family is in contact with the police to file an FIR. He added that the journalist had not been involved in any controversial issue and did not face any threat from anyone.

Speaking to Dawn, Khalid said he didn't pay much attention to the news yesterday as Mr Abid often left the house late at night to study with his friends.

But he received a call from Mr Abid's family on Thursday morning and was informed that he is missing.

The Islamabad Police, meanwhile, said in a tweet posted in Urdu that Mr Mir had returned home. They further said that the impression of Mr Abid going missing was false and had been created after the journalist lost contact with his family, according to an English translation of the tweet.

The issue gave ammunition to the opposition to attack the government in Pakistan. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune that the number of such cases has increased under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

I don't really care when things become known, only if they are known at all. The claims in Hersch's article (at least the ones he highlight in the introduction) are

[1] that bin Laden had been a prisoner of the ISI at the Abbottabad compound since 2006; [2] that Kayani and Pasha knew of the raid in advance and had made sure that the two helicopters delivering the Seals to Abbottabad could cross Pakistani airspace without triggering any alarms; [3] that the CIA did not learn of bin Laden’s whereabouts by tracking his couriers, as the White House has claimed since May 2011, but from a former senior Pakistani intelligence officer who betrayed the secret in return for much of the $25 million reward offered by the US, and that, [4] while Obama did order the raid and the Seal team did carry it out, many other aspects of the administration’s account were false

On May 12, the Pakistan-based journalist Amir Mir disclosed that the "walk-in" who had provided the CIA with the information about bin Laden's whereabouts was Brigadier Usman Khalid of ISI.[49][50]

which would corroborate (3). However, the article they cite doesn't really line up with the article, it says

Well-informed intelligence circles in the garrison town of Rawalpindi concede that the vital information about the bin Laden compound was actually provided to the Americans by none other than an ISI official - Brigadier Usman Khalid. The retired Brigadier, who has already been granted American citizenship along with his entire family members, persuaded Dr Shakil Afridi, a Pakistani physician, to conduct a fake polio campaign in the Bilal Town area of Abbottabad to help the Central Intelligence Agency hunt down Osama.

whereas Hersch claims that there was no fake polio campaign and the DNA was instead collected by bin Laden's doctor.

For 1,2 I think the situation is very similar to the recent Nord Stream thing, people had been saying for a while "oh, the compound is right near a military base, he has to have been a prisoner", and then Hersch pops up and says "aha! I have a secret source that says the same thing", but that means that his source could be some random guy who is repeating the same plausible story that other people had been speculating about. What would be interesting would be if any of the specific details in Hersch's article is later corroborated, but if they were, nobody seems to have linked to that on Wikipedia.

I believe the way that the Seymour Hersch’s story on Osama bin Laden’s raid worked out is that he was later vindicated in how much cooperation with Pakistan there was for the raid.  He also reported that the original plan was to fake that bin Laden was killed by drone strike, but this was never corroborated.
