Prompting Night: Jay Garrick deciding to have some quality bonding time with Bart, in whatever form that takes
A/N: this is the YJA-verse. Also technically within an YJA-preboot fusion AU I've been working on for a while but the details are unneeded since this is part of the very beginning of it. This is Jay's POV. I adore the Flashfam and have a particular soft spot for the Golden Agers.
Context: this is morning after the end of s2
---
7:06AM July 05, 2016
On his second cup of chamomile, Jay looks through Snapper Carr’s last reports and assessments on Bart’s academic skills again. Joan had already left early this morning for her microbiology lecture. Now it was just him and a still sleeping-in Bart in the house. That was a first he was pleased to see; the future-boy had a habit of being up as early as him, an insomniac old man who didn’t have many good dreams to look forward to.
Weak in essay writing and reading analysis, but strong in math, Mr. Carr’s notes began. Demonstrates excellent understanding of algebraic and geometric concepts. Has trouble showing his work and keeping on task, but that may be due to the subject material. Has not indicated extent of previous experience in the public school system. Will need additional guidance on school expectations prior to enrollment. Addendum: very neat cursive! Tell him to keep up the good handwriting. Did you teach him the Palmer method?
Jay frowns. He'll need to submit these to Keystone North by next Friday. Bart will start eighth grade in the coming fall. The thought of Bart’s shocking youth in light of recent events makes Jay’s stomach clench. Jay had nearly pulled Bart off the Team after Wally’s death. Barry was hardly in a state to argue back. The thought of Bart being in the same danger—how did he ever tolerate that for Wally, Jay wonders. Then he remembers--the need for an outlet, for others like himself, for morality and self-discipline. Work from a young age was good for character and strengthening. Wally had blossomed on the Team, at least for a little while. Then college came and there was a…worrying decline. Frankly, leaving behind the suit was good for Wally’s mental state, whether or not he would ever return to the life.
But even Wally, Jay thinks angrily, was not exposed to such twisting violence like Bart at the same age. Wally was fifteen going on sixteen when he was first on the Team. The missions, from what he recalled, were tricky but not shadowed by a looming war. Bart wasn’t fourteen and yet he was called one of the most important assets on the Team.
Sickening. Jay had half a mind to question the competency of the Justice League, but he had to use his influence carefully. The Justice League may take his advice in consideration but any harsh criticism could be easily dismissed as an out of touch veteran’s cantankerous mutterings. While Barry would certainly listen to him, that was no guarantee for change.
Why did he let Bart stay, he wonders. He and Joan were his guardians. Then he remembers again, the hard look in Bart’s eyes. If Jay and Joan did not let him, he would do it his own way, no matter the consequences. Perhaps he should have adopted a firmer stance. But Bart was not a young child that could be easily grounded or restrained. They were guardians but not…parental figures. Not quite. Bart did not openly rebel but neither was he obligated to stay with them, exactly. He listened out of respect and politeness, at least at this point. And Jay rather Bart be monitored and have help nearby than run the risk of Bart running off and doing God-knows-what in bum nowhere.
The new (old) suit and codename was just another hurdle for Jay to get used to.
Jay sighs, rubs one of his temples. He reads the end notes again. To say they felt vaguely incomplete and superficial was an understatement. But most academic assessments were mostly a glimpse of a student’s ability to take a presented exam nowadays. His own and Joan’s experiences in the American education system long told of that. Bart’s strength in mathematics was unsurprising—his preference of fixing and updating his goggles was evident from the start, alongside his family history. Not that it would have been a shame if Bart wasn’t so inclined; it simply made many things easier. Though, strangely, Barry seemed startled whenever Jay told him of Bart’s fascination with machines and frequencies.
Jay did not pretend to himself about any previous or future heartfelt conversations with Bart about the alternate now-unwinded future he came from. He didn’t know anymore than anyone else in the family. There was no one left to miss him, Bart had simply said when asked about any future-family to possibly return to, after the Reach were defeated, after poor Wally (it should have been you, you old bastard--).
Another life where there was no one left to miss him. Another aspect that was unfortunately similar to himself (no matter how long ago--). Jay takes another gulp of chamomile and watches the golden hour slowly pass into proper morning. Well, he thinks to himself. It’ll help no one fussing over that now. Bart will tell his current family more when he feels safe. Stable. Jay and Joan were happy to provide that but damn if Jay’s natural curiosity wasn’t piqued. It itched at him, to poke and ask so who did take care of you before you left. Time around fellas of his own generation had luckily taught him patience in that regard.
The most pressing mystery to Jay was the way Bart ran and moved, smooth, graceful, unceasing. No pauses for recalculations. Leaping, darting. It reminded him someone he thought dead for decades--
Peripherally, Jay teeks a closeby aura shifting brighter, awake. The stairs creak a picosecond after. He straightens up and closes the beige folder.
“Bart,” he calls up. “Breakfast is ready. Clean up and eat some eggs. They’re in the pan for you.”
“Be right there!” Bart calls right down. Ten seconds and a gust of air later, he appears next to Jay’s seat. “Can I have some waffles too?”
“In the freezer.”
“Thanks!”
Jay works through the rest of his chamomile by the time Bart settles across him with a plate piled with eggs and a tower of blueberry waffles. Jay pushes a jar of honey towards him.
“Are we going to train today, Jay?” Bart asks halfway into his eggs and waffles, his tone a tad too casual, the muscles in his throat twitching. Modulating the voice. Jay doesn’t poke. “Gramps mentioned he wanted to skip patrol today so maybe we could go running in Utah or the Andes. I haven’t navigated mountains in a while.”
An incomplete assessment, only scratching the surface. An old costume from someone else. When was the last time Bart had done anything not related to superheroing? Barry mostly called to take Bart patrolling or to pick him up from Team missions as of recent weeks. Before, Bart would take every opportunity to blame the invasion to avoid many non-hero excursions. No excuses anymore, Jay decides.
“I was thinking something closer to home, slugger,” Jay says, pushing the folder to the side. “Do you like chemistry?”
Bart blinks, perks up a bit. “Can’t say I’m super familiar with it like you. More of a mechanic—I mean, I like playing with computer parts or, uh—I’m good with numbers. Carr put that in my report card, right?”
Jay smiles. “He did. Chemistry and physics are my game. I still work as a part-time director. I go in tomorrow.”
“I can do physics.” A twist in Bart’s mouth before his face flattens into something neutral. “Is there going to be a test?”
“Just on how fast you can figure out which chemicals can cause an explosion,” Jay says idly.
“Oh, I think I can do that.” A grin blooms across Bart’s face, something reflecting genuine emotion.
“My lab’s in the basement,” Jay says, pleased. “After breakfast, I’ll show you what happens when you put sodium in water and how to put out a hydrogen fire. You gotta watch out for such things in a lab. You don’t want to blow up by accident.”
“A hydrogen fire?” Bart repeats, swallowing a bit of syrup covered eggs. His yellow eyes glittered with interest. “I know about magnesium and methanol fires but not hydrogen.”
“Not too different, asides from the fact it’s almost invisible in daylight,” Jay says cheerily. “It happens. After you learn how to not blow up by accident, then I’ll teach you how to make explosions on purpose.”
“Do you know how to put together a gas stove? Or a Bunsen burner?” Bart asks excitedly, voice climbing up. “I know how to fix one but I don’t know about which model parts belong to which since it’s hell trying to find an intact manual even in this time—”
“Sure thing, buster. But we’ll start from the beginning,” Jay tells him. “One step at a time. Think you can keep up?”
“I won’t forget a single one, Jay,” Bart replies with a thick layer of gushing assurance and eagerness. “And don’t worry, I won’t burn down the house. I promise.”
Jay huffed out a short laugh. “Alright, kid. Come on, let’s get started.”

#chris watches pll summer school#i am thinking too hard abt this#but that detail irked me so much those tests were the bane of my existence to a degree that i min maxxed my schedule to only have to take#them freshman and sophomore year

The Omen of St. Tepes
Format: Prose / Fiction
Word Count: 4,577
Synopsis: College seniors Johnny, Shirley, Claire, Ian, and Luke blow off some steam between exams, but are stalked by an ancient evil.
Luke walked out of the convenience store, a beaming smile on his face as he carried the 24 pack of Keystone Light and pair of four-pound bags of ice from the exit to the back of Johnny’s old Pathfinder. "Open up, Johnny boy!" he extolled. "I've got the goods!"
"Alright, alright," Johnny said, fumbling with the key fob to unlock the lift gate. “Flex your legal purchasing privileges some other time.”
"All in due time, my son." He placed the beer and ice on the floor to open up the trunk and retrieve a cooler which Claire, borrowed, from her parents. "You too may one day be blessed with the gift of being able to buy the cheapest beer on earth." He began filling the cooler with ice and the beer cans.
“It’s all of our money that paid for the beer,” Claire added, “So the beer belongs to all of us. Plus it’s my cooler, so…”
“So, nothing,” Ian added, helping Luke load the packed cooler back into the Pathfinder. “It was my idea.”
“And its my car,” Johnny added, triumphant. “So can we all agree that we can split the credit five ways?”
Shirley shrugged her shoulders, leaning against the passenger seat. “I don’t know, I think you deserve a little more of the credit here.”
Ian considered the point, then nodded. “You know, she’s right…! Cute girl takes your side, you win.”
Shirley began to blush, breaking eye contact and looking off up the road.
Johnny stared daggers at Ian. “Just get in the car, wiseass. You know where we’re heading?”
“Yeah,” he said. “Just follow the road for like twenty minutes, it’ll be impossible to miss.”
The five of them—suite mates Johnny, Luke, and Ian as well as Luke’s girlfriend Claire and the shy girl in Johnny’s classes Shirley—piled into the Pathfinder to head for Ravenwood Memorial Park, where they intended to drink, joke, and share stories around a bonfire on Halloween night. Probably their last before the Innsmouth University Class of 2012 would accept their diplomas and go their separate ways to join the work force, start families, and live their lives.
Johnny hopped in the driver’s seat and fired up the Pathfinder. He plugged his iPod Touch into the aux cable which fed into a cassette adapter to play his passengers’ suggestions through the sound system. Then he put the SUV in drive and pulled out of the parking lot to a dimly lit intersection.
As the car idled at the red light. A shadowy figure spilled out of the tree line and onto the road a few dozen yards from them. A large, dark colored four-legged thing. It briefly stopped in the middle of the road to turn and raise its head to look at the car. Despite the darkness they could see its silhouette resembled a canine, and its eyes seemed to glow an intense, fiery yellow that cut through the black. And there it stayed for a full five seconds before turning back to continue along its path, back into the woods on the other side of the road.
“Did you guys see that?” Johnny finally asked.
“How could we not?” Ian retorted. “It walked right in front of us.”
“Yeah, duh… but what the hell was that? It was way too big to be anything we get out here.”
“How do you even know how big it was, you can barely see anything with those headlights,” Luke teased him from the back seat.
Insincere as he was, Luke had a point: his old jalopy was in dire need of some TLC. Johnny looked over to Shirley in the passenger seat next to him, who stared ahead blankly as the traffic light turned green in front of them. He shrugged, dismissing what he saw, took his foot off the brake pedal, and proceeded up the road.
~~~
As promised, they arrived at the park some twenty minutes later, and after unloading the Pathfinder Ian led them down a cobble stone path, past a few gargoyles, sculptures, and an old shack tucked beside a titanic tree that must have been centuries old. While intriguing in their own rights, that wasn’t what they came here for. After a brief walk, they arrived at their destination: a courtyard clearing with a fire pit and bench seating. They set up shop in the courtyard, Luke opening the cooler and handing cold beer cans out as Ian gathered the materials to start the fire. And there they sat, enjoying each other’s company for hours as they swapped classroom tales, drama, and jokes for hours.
“Anybody got a good Halloween story?” Johnny asked from over the top of his beer can.
“Well, there was that one in Haddonfield,” Ian said with a smirk. “A guy in a Bill Shatner mask knifed a bunch of babysitters.”
“Har har.”
“Let’s see you come up with a better one, then..!” Luke challenged.
“I’ve got one,” Claire offered, putting her beer can down as she straightened up. “You ever hear about the Omen of St. Tepes?”
“The what?”
Claire took a breath to find the best storyteller voice she could muster, and began. “It’s a tale as old as time,” she said. “About lust, jealousy, a promise, and a beast from Hell.”
Ian, Johnny, Luke, and Shirley looked over to her, meeting her eyes past the fire.
“The year was 1692, in the quiet town of St. Tepes, Massachusetts,” she continued. “In this town lived a perfect family. A father, mother, their grown daughter, and teenage son. Everything is going well, as you’d expect, until one fateful morning the archdeacon of the church knocks on their door. The father answers, and receives a warning from the archdeacon about a coven of supposed witches down in Salem. He warns they could be spreading north, and advises him to keep his family safe.” She paused to pick her beer up and slosh it around in the can. “The archdeacon visits again and again, bringing gifts of good will and good spirits to the house—to protect the family, of course. But that’s not why he kept visiting—”
“What,” Luke interposed. “He wanted to get in the son’s pants?”
Johnny chuckled to himself, but stopped when he glanced over to Shirley who remained quiet as she listened to Claire’s story.
“Close,” Claire said, taking from her beer. “It was the daughter.”
“Scandalous...!”
“Some weeks go by,” Claire continued. “Eventually, the archdeacon asks the father for an audience with the daughter. Says it would do her good to speak with him about guarding her spirit. The father—knowing what’s happening in Salem and what could happen to them if he denied his request, grants him the audience.”
Johnny leaned forward, taking genuine interest now.
“It goes about as you’d expect: daughter spurns his affections. Of course. So, the archdeacon accuses her of witchcraft, imprisons her and the whole family.” She took from her can. “…of course.”
“Not really feeling like a Halloween story, more like a historical one.”
“Patience,” Ian said. “Story’s not over.”
“Far from it,” Claire added. She continued while she absentmindedly sloshed her beer around in the can, ignoring the stark cold of the perspiring metal in her fingers. “The night before their trial, and—let’s be honest—their execution, the daughter gets a visitor to her cell. An old man in dark church-looking robes. With dulcet tones and a honey voice he says he can protect her and set her family free. All she needs to do is accept his offer…and she does. As a dutiful daughter who loves her family.”
“She’s got to know there’s some kind of catch here.” Johnny said.
“Maybe,” Claire retorted. “But put yourself in her position—wouldn’t you do anything to save your family from a hanging?” She put her beer can down again. “So anyway, she says ‘yes, right? Church-looking visitor thanks her, bids her good evening, then leaves. The following morning,” she continued, as her breath started to form thin cloudy wisps in front of her face, “a few villagers of St. Tepes begin crying wolf. Literally, they say there’s a huge black dog watching them from the top of the hill.”
Luke rolled his eyes and looked away as he finished his beer. He knew where her yarn was going.
“Over the afternoon, more and more villagers bring the matter of this shadowy hound to the archdeacon’s attention. Say that a huge black shape with fiery eyes boring into their very souls is watching them. The archdeacon dismisses them at first, but eventually can’t as every single one of the villagers makes a point to tell him they saw it three distinct times over the course of the day. That night he calls for an emergency mass to address the sightings. The entire village of St. Tepes is in attending.”
“Except the daughter and her family,” Ian suggested.
“Exactly,” Claire confirmed. “So as the villagers are piling into the church, a terrible storm starts brewing, like they’ve never seen. The archdeacon ushers them inside fast and makes his way to the altar to begin the service. And then, just has he begins, the altar bursts into flames, and out from the fire emerges the hound.” She picked her beer back up. “The villagers are hysterical—‘it’s a demon’ they shriek. ‘come up from hell to punish us.’ As they scream, the wolf howls and disappears in another fireball, and the panicking villagers burn to death, trapped in the church as the fire spread and swallowed them all.” She took a sip and put her drink back down. “The fire spread across the entire town and beyond. reaching the farms and even the cells where the daughter and her family were being held.” She blinked and looked up towards the sky. “Of course the daughter and her family were spared the fire, but were wracked with guilt over surviving their entire town burning down. The father and son cut their wrists, the mother poisoned herself, and the daughter lived the rest of her life alone.”
“Right,” Ian said. “The old man said they’d be set free. In death. Pretty effed up story, Claire. More depressing than scary.”
“I might have embellished some things for dramatic effect,” she confessed. “Different versions of the story are floating around, with different endings.”
“So, what,” Johnny said, “the guy who came to the daughter in the church was the Devil or something?”
“Possibly. Probably. But all the variants of that story call what burned the city down a hellhound. An omen that supposedly kills anyone who spots it—”
“What, like the thing we saw on the road?” Luke interjected. “So are we marked for death?” He raised his hands up to head level, imitating a campy television host after telling a cheesy supposed scary story. “Oooooo...!”
“We should be fine, unless we look at it two more times tonight,” she added, tongue-in-cheek. “Anyone who looks into its eyes three times will supposedly die that night. Which tracks, if you think about it. If each of the townspeople looked at it over the course of the day, the Omen must probably figured it’s be easier to wipe them all out at once.…”
She looked back at her friends when she realized she was trailing off in a tangent, and saw their eyes following something over her shoulder. She turned around to spot it as well—a pair of searing yellow dots a few yards away. In the dark she could see a faint silhouette around it as it moved to their left. She could see it was an animal—a canine moving with its head lowered as it circled them.
Johnny pitched his beer can at the shape, getting up from his seat and yelling at it as he strode toward it. The shadow turned its head from them and trotted away, disappearing out of sight behind a large tree.
He slowed as he approached the tree, then stopped completely before calling his friends over. “Was there a group here before us?”
“Not that I saw, so,” Ian said as he, Claire, Shirley, and Luke walked up to join him.
“Check this out,” he said, gesturing to the side of the tree away from their fire.
Claire’s eyes widened. “It’s smoldering,” she said. “Like a fire was put out…”
Johnny slowly looked back at the others, raising an eyebrow.
Luke shook his head. “No way. No frigging way—you’re really gonna sit there with a straight face and tell me that just happens to be the thing from Claire’s story?”
“We should probably go,” Ian suggested.
“What, you’re scared shitless of a dog? And of a story she just put together on the spot?”
“Look, best-case scenario—it’s a stray dog following us. Worst-case, it’s the devil’s mutt. Either way, it wouldn’t make a ton of sense to stay out here much longer.”
“Guys,” Claire got their attention. “Where’s Shirley?”
Johnny looked around, not spotting her among them. “Aah, shit…” He peered off into the distance, following the trail back up the hill toward the old shack. There’s only direction she could have gone, he figured. “Stay here,” he said before taking off in the direction, “I’ll get her...!”
~~~~
Johnny followed the cobblestone trail, calling out to Shirley as he traced what would certainly have been the path she took away from the rest of the group as their discussion about the ghostly black dog they encountered grew more heated. He pressed on, up the hill and past the old shack and ancient-looking tree they passed on the way to the fire pit. Past where he was sure they’d gotten onto the path in the first place, and beyond.
“Shirley,” he called again, his breath forming thin clouds in front of his mouth. The designer zip-up hoodie he wore did little in chill night. “Shirley...!”
He kept a light jog as he followed the trail deeper into the park, passing sculptures overtaken by nature and more foliage that must have been centuries old. His growing unease pulled him gently in the direction of the group, but his guilt for inviting her out in the first place drove him onward. He pressed onward for what must have felt like ten minutes.
“Shirley!” Eventually he found her curled up on a bench with her knees in her chest, her arms wrapped around her shins and head tucked behind them. Slowly he approached her, tenderness in his voice. “Shirley…”
“We shouldn’t be here,” she said, not looking up at him. “It was a mistake coming out tonight.”
Gingerly, Johnny took a seat on the bench next to her. He reached out toward her, then paused before stretching out his arm fully to wrap her in an embrace and share a little bit of his warmth with her. She leaned into him as he started to talk her down. “Shirley,” he reassured her, “it’s fine. We’re taking some time to relax and blow off some steam before getting back to the grind. One night out isn’t going to kill us,” he added with a smirk. “We’re fine.”
“No..!” she insisted, looking up to look him in the eye. “We’re not…” She turned in her seat to face him fully as Johnny gave her his undivided attention. “You don’t seem to understand how un-fine we are,” she continued, her voice receding to a terrified whisper.
Johnny leaned closer to her, matching her tone. “The wolf?”
Shirley shook her head, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes. “It’s not a wolf,” she confided.
Johnny recoiled, incredulous. “You don’t actually believe that Hell-hound garbage—”
“Yes!” she insisted. “And you should too!” She took a breath to compose herself before continuing.
Her unyielding stare told Johnny she was serious.
“A mortal soul who would thrice meet its eyes, is marked by fate to perish by sunrise.”
Johnny blinked slowly. He wasn’t scared until she recited the line from Claire’s story, almost poetically. They all looked right at it as it crossed the road in front of the car, and a second time in the courtyard. If the legend was true, looking at it a third time would mean their peril. “So, you know what this thing is?”
“Intimately,” Shirley said. Then she exhaled, shut her eyes, and tilted her head back to look up at the night sky when she opened them again. “She didn’t want for them to die,” she confessed.
“What?”
“The daughter in Claire’s story.” She looked back at him. “And she was visited a second time, after the prison burned down on top of her family.”
Johnny blinked. “How do you know all this, Shirley?”
She quickly scanned the horizon, then stood up. “If we make it back to campus tonight,” she offered. “I’ll tell you everything.”
~~
They re-traced their way back toward the courtyard in total silence, Johnny wrapping his arms around himself and working to keep up with her brisk pace. As he did, the questions continued to bubble up in his mind—how did she know so much about Claire’s story? What else was there that she didn’t tell? How was she not cold? What was that cardigan made of?
Suddenly he became aware of his breath, and the clouds that formed in front of his face and Shirley’s. She slowed down just a little, but enough. Even looking at the back of her head, her ebony hair, he could imagine what her expression must have looked like while she kept her eyes straight ahead. She reached back behind herself with her left hand, fumbling in the air for a bit before it finally found his right and held on tight. Then she picked the pace back up, leading him, and he found it a lot harder to breathe now for some reason. Like the air was denser.
“When I say so,” she said, barely louder than a whisper. “You run. Run as fast as you can and don’t look back.”
As he processed her words and made sense of them, his heartbeat started to accelerate. He acutely felt the adrenaline spread to his every limb as he started to turn his head to look over his left shoulder.
“Don’t look,” she said. “Keep your eyes forward.” Her voice started to shake. “Whatever you do, don’t look at it.”
At first, he thought it was his brain playing tricks on him, but he could swear he heard a light scratching noise on the floor a few yards behind them. The sound grew louder in his mind as he realized how similar it sounded to a dog’s claws on stone. As if the thing from Claire’s story was following them.
“Run…” Shirley said, not daring to look behind at him. “Run, now…!”
“Shirley—”
“RUN!!”
Without a second thought, they took off. He ran as fast as he could muster, just like she told him to. As fast as his legs could carry him, he sprinted away from the terrible thing he couldn’t see.
And then he heard it—a blood-chilling howl unlike any he could have imagined. It was a loud, shrill, terrifying call that shattered the night air and echoed with what sounded like the souls of thousands crying out in anguish.
He realized he’d out-paced her. That thing would get to her first.
“Keep running, Johnny!” She called after him. “Don’t look back!”
His mind betrayed his instinct to keep running, to survive. He fought the urge to look back and make sure she was still alive, and as he kept his eyes forward, toward life, he imagined the worst. He anticipated hearing her screams as the thing tore into her. He anticipated feeling the vice grip and searing pain pierce into his flesh as it tore at him from behind. He couldn’t take it anymore; he made the decision to—
His foot caught the edge of a stone. He stumbled forward before falling onto his side, his ankle throbbing.
“Johnny!” In mere moments she caught up to him, throwing herself down on top of him and wrapping her arms tight around his body. She tucked her head beside his neck and shut her eyes tight.
And then it was upon them. The huge, ghostly black hellish hound that had pursued them all night. It circled its prey, snarling madly.
“Don’t look at it, Johnny!” Shirley cried. “Whatever you hear, don’t open your eyes!”
It was so close to them she could feel the heat coming off its body, like a torch held by some tormentor shrouded by the darkness of their closed eyes. Its claws scratched at the cobble stone road around them. A crematorium door opened and shut with its every breath and bark.
And there they lay, anticipating an attack that never came. Despair and terror overwhelmed them.
Then the animal stopped moving. The heat remained inches from Shirley’s shoulder for only a moment. Neither she nor Johnny dared to move when it was so close either one of them could have reached out and touched it.
And then, just as suddenly as it appeared, it fled. And in the same instant the heat left them they were instantly aware of the world around them again—the cobble stone path below them, the cold night air…
And their friends’ voices.
“Shirley!” Ian called. His voice grew louder as he got closer. “Johnny!”
“Ian!?” Shirley sat straight, still squeezing her eyes shut and reaching out in front of her. “Claire!?”
“We’re right here,” Claire’s voice just feet from her now. Then she’d felt the familiar warmth of Claire’s hands on her arms, cupping her elbow and helping her back onto her feet.
Finally, Shirley opened her eyes to see the faces of her friends. And she knew she could breathe easily again. “Johnny hurt his ankle,” she said to them. “Help him up.”
Luke and Ian helped Johnny up off the ground. Immediately they noticed his pain.
“My ankle,” he said through clenched teeth. “Twisted it back there…”
Luke looked around for anything he could find to start treating it. “We can probably find something in there,” he said, motioning the old shack next to the giant tree about thirty yards from them.
“That’s perfect,” Claire noted. “Let’s get him inside.”
Ian and Luke each put one of their arms under one of Johnny’s to help him stand and followed Claire to the shack beside the old tree. Shirley trailed behind, but her attention was pulled by a flash of lightning off in the distance which the others didn’t seem to notice. It gave her pause as she recalled a detail from Claire’s story, but eventually she dismissed her thoughts and joined her friends in the shack.
~~
Shirley sat down on a bench beside Johnny as he raised his injured leg. Claire brought over a box for him to rest his ankle on while Luke activated a flashlight app on his smartphone as he checked the corners of the space for anything he could use as a splint. He apologized to them all when he came back with nothing to show for his idea.
“Look, I’m just glad you showed up when you did,” Johnny said. “How’d you find us, anyway.”
“All the noise,” Ian said. “We heard a howl and knew what it was immediately. We came running.” His words were accented by the rolling of distant thunder.
“Perfect timing too,” Luke added. “You two would have been puppy chow if we hadn’t shown up… Fido knew it too. Looked right at us and bolted as soon as it saw the odds were stacked against it.”
Shirley froze. Then, slowly, she stood up and backed away from them all. The others turned to look at her.
“Shirley, you okay?” Ian asked.
The distant thunder grew louder—closer. Panic choked her as the color drained from her face. “What did you just say?” she asked.
Before any of them could answer, they were deafened by the crack of lightning landing just outside the shack’s wall. When her hearing returned, Shirley heard a pattering on the roof of the shack above them. Too hard to be rain or an animal, she thought.
Then she remembered the tree. The giant, ancient tree right beside the shack which stretched high into the sky. The path of least resistance.
The lightning had struck the tree. It was debris she was hearing, and it was growing louder.
By the time the others realized what had happened, the ceiling had already started to collapse.
~~~
Shirley snapped her eyes open with a gasp. Her cheek on the rain-drenched floor. She took inventory of her senses; she felt the cold night air around her again, and the rain falling on her head, neck, and shoulders let her know the shack had been split open around her. Still, she didn’t feel anything missing. And she’d felt her breathing and steady heartbeat—she’d survived the falling tree.
But did he?
“Johnny,” she whispered, slowly scanning her surroundings to look for him in the wreckage and finding only death around her. Out from under a pile of rubble protruded a pair of legs in blood-soaked jeans wearing Ian’s shoes. Luke’s stomach and legs disappeared somewhere under huge tree limbs, along with the rest of Claire’s body below the left shoulder. The falling rain spread the pools of blood forming under the wood, eventually joining them. “Johnny?” She whipped her head back in the other direction to find him on the other side of the space, under a smaller tree branch but whole.
“Johnny…!” She scrambled to her hands and knees and made her way to him, trying to lift the timber from him but failing. She realized all too late that poor Johnny was firmly pinned to the floor, impaled in several places by the branch that fell on him.
Disheartened, she sat back on her calves as her shoulders slumped with a defeated sigh. She looked at his lifeless eyes, frozen in the terror of his final moments. “You looked, didn’t you?”
She didn’t cry for him, she’d cried out all her tears after she’d lost her family in that catastrophic, hellish blaze. She didn’t mourn her lost friends, or any of the countless souls she’d shepherded to their doom over the centuries. Now, as so many times before, she felt hollow. A cold emptiness that accompanied the reminder that she’d forfeited any chance of living a normal life when she accepted the offer that figure made her in the cell.
She felt its presence before she turned to look at it, the hellish hound to which she was bound forever. It looked back at her from past what was left of the shack’s outer wall, sitting on its haunches as it licked its lips and yawned, its eyes smoldering in defiance of the rain falling around her.
Slowly, she stood up and walked away from where Johnny lay, away from the remains of Ian, Claire, and Luke, and out into the open. And Shirley—the alleged witch who struck a deal to save herself and her family only to lose them both—disappeared into the dark night, the Omen of St. Tepes following close behind.
weird inchoate throughts incoming:
i noticed the way i infodump about something im deeply into tends to be a bit different from how other people do it and this might be a product of me masking, i dont know. but now a days i tend to be more reserved about this stuff than i used to be when i was younger. i try to stay away from just word vomiting everything i know and/or might find interesting about the topic, but rather try to curate the information and the way im presenting it as if i was pitching it.
rather than merely exposit im almost trying to sell the concept, im trying to make sure it has at least a shadow of the same emotional impact that it had on me when i first discovered it, im almost trying to reverse engineer the experience i had learning about the thing for the first time. so that they can GET IT, so that they can feel it in their bones what i felt, so that they can see not just what it is but WHY i care so much about it, so that they care a little bit as well and they dont think im a weirdo for talking non stop at them about something they dont care about.
im trying to get them invested
in order to do this i try to stay away from merely rapid fire exposition, this isnt an oral exam or a memorization test, this is a story that i am about to tell. i will keep firmly in mind what is merely tecnical minutia that wont contribute to selling the idea and what are the emotional keystones to get the listener hooked, i will try to cold read my audience a bit to see what tone to strike, how much energy to put into my tone, what thing to emphazise, what things to leave by the wayside.
the first thing ill keep in mind is that i will try my best to make this a conversation, which means that instead of launching on a 40 minutes long monologue, ill try to structure it as questions and answers. every time the conversation goes back to me and i launch on a fifteen minute rant about something i am directly and very pointedly adressing the question the other person asked. this helps the whole thing stay focused, structured and most important, interesting for the person listening to me. they are getting something they want from me and i get to feel smart by being able to explain whatever the other person wants to know about this vast world i hold inside of me.
there is a downside to this which is that im very dependant on the other persons full willingness to paticipate and keep the conversation going. but the upside of that is that the times it happens i know for a fact the other person is actually paying attention and interested in what i have to say
when i introduce the idea for the first time i try to reduce it to its most fundamental essntials, as quick and succint as i can make it while still communicating the very core of the concept. i try to make it concentrated and flavorful, promising depths and complexities beneath if the interlocutor is ever interested in plundering its dpths with me and if they bite, that is when the dumping starts.
a common mistake i see is people going on and on about details that are not relevant for the overall conveyance of the experience, it will just dizzy and confuse the listener trying to keep all details straight without knowing what is the main take away from it all. i will forego using too many names, opting for general labels like "this dude" or "the blue chick" or "the weird one i told you about". ill refer to previous events like "the big fuck up" or "that party" and so on and such.
i will make liberal use of hands and body gestures, ill put on a fun one-girl theatre show extravanganza, ill make voices and faces. ill re tell certain bits in a much more exagerated and overacted way because that way its a bit funnier and more engaging to listen to when coming from a person talking. ill pause, ill create dramatic tension, retell my own reactions that i had when i got to a certain part.
i will also try to highly structure the whole thing, if im about to embark on a tangent or a quick aside that is vital to get context i will make sure the listener knows this, ill put a pin on what i was saying, lay some sign boards on the ground and once we rejoin the main narrative ill make it explicit that that is what we are doing.
i have been told im really good at explaining things, i like to think is one of my talents, definetly is a thing i had a lot of practisce in. this is the first time i actually sat down to examine what is it that i do to get these results
( Welcome to: Rin's meta post about Romana and the Doctor. This is primarily intended for people who are playing the Doctor, but aren't super familiar with Classic Who and/or Big Finish. Feel free to use it as a reference, and as always, you're welcome to ask me for extra information about anything here.
Now, I haven't listened to every single one of Romana's audios yet, so this post will be updated as I go on. I'll make a note of where I'm missing information, and will go back and edit later. I also haven't ready many of Romana's novels yet, so there will be no references to events from those.
There's a few hundred years of friendship to cover here, so it's going to get long. But here we go!
Romana met the Doctor when she was assigned to help him recover the pieces of the Key to Time, an extremely powerful cosmic keystone-type object that could be used to enforce universal balance. The Key was split into six pieces, that could disguise themselves as anything, scattered across all of time and space. They were given this mission by the White Guardian, who was a god-like figure who needed the Key to Time to keep the universe running smoothly, while his counterpart, the Black Guardian, also sought the Key to plunge the universe into chaos, though Romana initially believed that she had been sent on the mission by the Lord President of Gallifrey.
The Doctor was in his fourth incarnation when they met, while Romana was in her first (and had only recently graduated from the Academy - a young adult, by Time Lord standards, though she was already over 100 years old). K9 was also there, and he immediately got along very well with Romana, with them both being rather logical-minded.
The Doctor and Romana didn't hit it off immediately. The Doctor was annoyed that he'd had a companion thrust upon him, and doubly annoyed that it was a Time Lord like Romana. It was Romana's first time away from Gallifrey, and she was still deeply entrenched in the Gallifreyan way of seeing the universe, looking down at the Doctor for his poor grades in the Academy and generally acting a bit haughty.
However, Romana was also very naive and inexperienced, with 100% of her intelligence coming from book-smarts. While she could beat the Doctor on any exam, she had a distinct lack of common sense, and quickly came to respect the Doctor's skills, and while she remained very confident in her own abilities and would still call the Doctor out on his foolishness and irresponsibility, she also came to trust that if she got in over her head (which tended to happen... a lot), the Doctor would be there to bail her out.
As they travelled together, they became closer, eventually coming to consider each other friends.
(This is where Romana I's 4DAs would go. After I've listened to them, I'll either delete this, or add anything significant)
Eventually, they collected the last piece of the Key to Time. However, as they came to give it to the White Guardian, the Doctor realised that it wasn't the White Guardian at all, but the Black. They deconstructed the Key to Time, once again scattering the pieces, and added a randomiser to the TARDIS, travelling with no knowledge of their destination to make it more difficult for the Black Guardian to track them and take revenge.
In the aftermath of their last adventure with the Black Guardian, Romana regenerated. The reasons for her regeneration are complicated, but as she had amnesia for them at the time and told the Doctor that she chose to regenerate because she felt like it, I won't go into it here. Feel free to ask if you're curious.
Romana copied the body of Princess Astra, the living embodiment of the last piece of the Key to Time, for her next form, claiming that she just liked the look of it, as she had great control over her regenerations. The Doctor took issue with her copying another person's body, but eventually relented.
In her second incarnation, Romana was warmer, and her friendship with the Doctor further grew. She was more open in her affections for him, both verbally and physically, as well as taking on some of his traits. Some people call Romana II a 'more competent, female version of the Doctor'. I don't agree with that statement, but it gives a decent idea of how she appeared on a surface-level.
The Doctor and Romana continued to travel together until the Time Lords requested Romana to return. After all, Romana wasn't a renegade - she had left Gallifrey to assist the Doctor with a mission, and now that it was over, they wanted her to return. Romana was upset by this, as she wanted to stay with the Doctor, but the Doctor advised her to return.
(This is where Romana II's first set of 4DAs would go)
Before she had the opportunity to make any decision, the TARDIS became trapped in E-Space, a pocket dimension outside of regular space. Unable to return, the Doctor and Romana continued to travel together through E-Space, with stowaway teenager Adric joining them.
(And this is where Romana II's second set of 4DAs would go)
In their travels through E-Space, they met and helped a race of enslaved lion-esque aliens with time-sense, the Tharils. The Tharils helped them to work out how to return to regular space, but Romana chose to stay behind in E-Space, to help the Tharils recover from their slavery, and to further delay returning to Gallifrey. The Doctor gifted K9 Mark II to her, and she left.
(This is around about where the Key 2 Time arc happens. It's a sequel to the Key to Time arc featuring the Fifth Doctor)
At some point, when the Doctor was in his Seventh incarnation, Romana returned to Gallifrey. Upon returning, she was granted the Presidency (I won't go into the details; the important part is she became President). She met with the Doctor at least once shortly after becoming President, and they continued to have a positive relationship.
A few weeks into her Presidency, Romana and her entourage were attacked by the Daleks. They were captured, and Romana spent the next 20 years as a Dalek prisoner, being used a slave labour on Etra Prime, or otherwise having her mind ripped into to find Time Lord secrets.
The Sixth Doctor and his companion Evelyn Smythe became caught up in the incident, arriving at Archetryx as the Daleks invaded. Romana escaped from Etra Prime just as the Doctor arrived, and they worked together to fight the Daleks, succeeding in keeping them from invading Gallifrey.
The Doctor left after the Daleks were defeated - possibly due to being out of sync with Romana and Gallifrey's timeline - and Romana returned to her Presidency, taking no time to recover from the immense trauma she had suffered through.
After Etra Prime, Romana became more withdrawn and distrustful of others, sometimes coming across as cold. Her personality notably changed; most would probably put it down to her position as President, though the Doctor would likely be able to tell that it had more to do with Etra Prime than anything.
In his Eighth incarnation, the Doctor sometimes came to Gallifrey to visit Romana, or to try and convince her to come away on an adventure, succeeding on at least one occassion during the events of Shada (there are multiple versions of Shada, but for the sake of this blog I take the version with the Eighth Doctor as canon).
Romana later met the Eighth Doctor during the Anti-Time/Zagreus incident. The Doctor had saved his companion, Charley Pollard, from dying when she should have died. As a result, Charley became the source of an Anti-Time infection, that Romana and the Time Lords wanted to use to travel to the Anti-Time world to investigate claims that Rassilon was still living there.
In the Anti-Time universe, they met the Neverpeople, victims of the CIA erasing Time Lords from history. Romana's Coordinator, Vansell, become infected with Anti-Time and tried to sacrifice her to the Neverpeople, who blamed her for their fate, though Romana had no awareness that erasing people from time was still being practiced on Gallifrey.
The Neverpeople wanted to invade the universe of real-time, and the Doctor, Romana and Charley had to work to fight against them. The Doctor's ultimate plan was to sacrifice himself, trapping the Anti-Time infestation in his TARDIS with him.
Months passed, and the Doctor was presumed dead. Romana continued in her role as President. However, the Doctor was very much not dead. Leela, another former companion of the Doctor, was contacted by Rassilon in a dream, and told to bring Romana to the Death Zone.
A lot of things happened at this point, but the important part is that Rassilon was responsible for the Anti-Time infestation, and the Doctor was infected by it, calling himself Zagreus and losing touch with his true identity. Rassilon attempted to use Zagreus-Doctor, wanting to reclaim Gallifrey.
After Rassilon was stopped, the Doctor remained infected by Anti-Time, and for the sake of the universe, had to lock himself away. The last time that Romana and the Doctor spoke to each other before he left, he told her that he had lost all faith in Gallifrey and the Time Lords, asked how long it would be until she fell to corruption, and told her that he didn't want anything to do with Gallifrey ever again.
So, suffice to say, they didn't part on particularly good terms.
Romana withdrew further from others after the loss of the Doctor, though eventually Leela was able to break down her barriers. Despite their last encounter, Romana continued to have faith in the Doctor, genuinely believing that every version of the Doctor would always make the best choices, to the point of absolutely trusting an alternate version of the Doctor, to tragic consequences.
As President, Romana worked closely with the Doctor's brother, Irving Braxiatel.
At some point (probably back in his Seventh incarnation), the Doctor left Ace on Gallifrey to attend the Academy, which Romana had opened up to aliens. Ace became an agent in the CIA, and was someone who Romana came to trust.
Eventually, the Doctor cured his Anti-Time infection and returned to the universe, continuing on with his travels. Romana met with him again after this point, though their relationship didn't fully mend.
In the early days of the Time War, Romana asked the Doctor to help them, but the Doctor refused to become involved. Romana interpreted this as a personal rejection of her, though said that she didn't blame him, given what she had witnessed from Gallifrey in the Time War.
Still relatively early into the Time War, Romana (who was then serving as Coordinator of the CIA, rather than President), was exiled from Gallifrey after attempting to assassinate Rassilon, and was officially classed as Missing In Action not long after this.
The War Doctor worked with Leela during the Time War, so may have heard from her what really happened to Romana - that she had been captured by Rassilon, and was being held as his prisoner, while Leela herself was forcibly conscripted, with Romana's safety being used to keep her in line.
Whether or not the Doctor knew of Romana's fate during the Time War, it is unknown what became of her after it.
I just spent a week in Washington, DC, and I'm excited to move back there in the fall. It's easy to forget what makes the city cool, because on paper it really is so dull. And there are only a couple of good cinemas and bookstores. And when I tell people in New York that I'm moving there they seem at best confused (at worst I can sometimes feel judgment). But it's also gorgeous, endlessly diverse, full of quiet and reflective spaces, and its a keystone of black America. Also, all of the best neighborhoods that I've lived in were in DC. I've never felt welcomed in a community (or even motivated to belong in a community) as much as I did when I lived in Southeast, in Brightwood, and in Takoma. I just started reading When the Smoke Cleared and now I'm reinvigorated to pick Chocolate City back up. I need to go back to my Amharic notes now that I don't have bar exam preparation breathing down my neck. This is going to be so litttt.
#washington dc#reflection#i will miss new york tho#i'm just going to od on fun new york stuff for the next three weeks
like I didn't have to do final presentations but I did have to do keystone exams and I hated every single second of them (probably since I had to actually go into school but that's not the point)
THANK YOU THANK YOU!! my birthday was considerably chill which I liked since when getting older i've become way more chill and calmer and just want some peace and quiet lol
Okay let me explain what's going on on my end of the spectrum, bc some of y'all words-thinkers sound just as confused by what I'm experiencing as I am by what you're experiencing.
If you ask me to "imagine an apple:" we start with a visualization of an apple. A Fuji, for me, mixed red and green, with a stem and a single serrated green leaf. It is as vibrant in my mind as if I'm seeing it in real life.
Then, I suppose 'behind' the apple, one layer of abstraction further down, there is a fractalization of other images, which are all closely connected to the concept of "apple." I see: Adam & Eve in the garden; an orchard; a doctor in a white coat; an elementary school teacher; an apple pie.
Behind those images are another layer of images, along with some 'concept clouds' of densely related meaning that are typically 'labeled' with some keystone image. Behind Adam & Eve, I see a cloud of "artistic representations of the Garden of Eden," represented by three or four of the most famous of those. Connected to that cluster is "Biblical exegesis of the Garden of Eden," visually represented by a medieval priest working over a book by candlelight. Behind the orchard, there is a cloud for 'agriculture' (visually labeled by farmers in a wheat field); as well as images of several other kinds of orchards, including a Florida orange orchard and a cherry orchard in bloom. Behind the doctor is an exam room, a cluster of charts and bottles of medication, and a large cloud representing "reasons you might want to keep a doctor away," visually labeled as a frustrated overweight woman being refused treatment.
Behind the elementary school teacher & her large wooden desk with an apple sitting on the corner we of course have a cloud representing "school" (my actual school building from 4-6th grade), several of my own elementary school teachers (like they're standing in line, waiting to move to the front of my thought-queue); and an image of a playground. Behind the apple pie we have "Thanksgiving" (an entire table of traditional Thanksgiving food), the sound an apple pie crust makes when you scrape it with a fork, and 'recipes' (labeled with a mental image of my own kitchen from the last time I made an apple pie).
All of these images are instantly in my head when you say "imagine an apple." The more distant images hang down like the dangling crystals on a chandelier, all of them able to be traced back up the arms to the central concept of "apple."
The idea of thinking in words is so fucked up to me because the connotative density of what happens in my head when I imagine an apple takes forever to put into words! Girl who has the time! I have another thing to think!
Wait, sorry, I have ADHD. are the rest of you thinking thoughts in complete, articulated sentences? Like seems to be implied in most media with telepathy in it? Like are people really out there thinking "I should make a sandwich," or "She's so cute, I wish I could tell her that" like with words, in that order, like someone is talking?
I have never had a thought with words in it in my life. Not unless I'm, like, mentally rehearsing a phone call I have to make. I have no idea how my thoughts turn into sentences when I'm speaking or writing I just figured that was part of the miracle of consciousness.
I don't believe it. I don't believe it. That's too fucked up. No way people are thinking in words.
