The Mosley Review: Best Films of 2019
Wohoo! 2019 has come and gone and man did it fly by. This year we had sooooo many fantastic films and this year was probably the hardest list to put together. I really wanted to include alot more, but I had to make a few cuts. Now I tend to keep my list to the traditional 10 films, but on some occasions I've extended it to 11. This is one of those occasions. I have one runner up that is worth mentioning and I think it should not be missed.
Missing Link: Many animated films are computer generated now and the art of hand drawn animation is rarely shown. The one type of animation that is all but extinct is stop motion animation. It takes time, patience and passion to bring to life characters with such sophistication and care in an almost forgotten art form. The masterminds at Laika are truly imaginative artist and this film shows that in every frame. Not many films take the story of the myth behind Sasquatch to fun places without being hokey and I was relieved that this film took it seriously and pumped so much fun and heart into the story and I think this was a hidden gem of 2019. Click the title for my full review.
Now, on to my list of 2019's best films of the year. If you want my full review of each film then go ahead and click the title of each film. First one up is definitely a fantastic sequel to a film that the author hated, but loved the film adaptation of his second book.
Doctor Sleep: The Shining is a classic that can never really be touched. Stephen King is famously known for disliking the film adaptation of his novel, but with his blessing placed upon Mike Flanagan's vision for the sequel novel, we got this magnificent film. Not only does this film pay tribute to Stanley Kubrick's film, but it also follows the same rules and visual structure while keeping the film fresh. The tone was consistent and the performances were across the board amazing. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and the talented Kyliegh Curran deliver absolute greatness. This film features stunning and intriguing dark moments, but definitely has one of the most disturbing scenes I've ever seen and its all because of Jacob Tremblay's performance in THAT scene.
Ready or Not: How many times have we seen the family initiation story in a romantic comedy? A dozen times I tell you! Well how about you take the same concept, throw in a fun horror version of hide and seek with a hint of the supernatural and great dark comedic writing. You get this fantastic film that is all of that and more. Luckily I stayed away from any major trailers for this film because in retrospect, the R rated trailer gave away too many of the fun gags. The performance of each family member was awesome and this was a standout performance for Samara Weaving. Every year from now on, this film will be on my Halloween watchlist. I loved this film and I can't recommend it enough.
Shazam!: Batman (1989), Superman (1978), The Dark Knight Trilogy and Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse are just to name a few of perfect adaptations of a comic book character to screen. This film was beyond perfection in many ways and the best DC film to date. This film had the right amount of fun, darkness and heart that embodies the life of the titular character. I could see the amount of genuine fun the cast was having on screen and the heartfelt performances of Asher Angel and Zachary Levi were outstanding. Jack Dylan Grazer stole the film with his amazing comedic speed and wit. This was truly a film I had high hopes for and it didn't disappoint.
Avengers: Endgame: How do you start a story in 2008 and bring it to an amazing and satisfying conclusion that wraps up 11 years of storytelling? You have a plan, a clear vision from the very beginning and with that it'll special success. Producer Kevin Feige set out on a journey to bring to life some of the best superheroes and keep them together in a cohesive and long formed narrative to complete a saga that's never been done before. He did it with the best talent behind each film's camera and The Russo Brothers have delivered the most epic film the superhero film genre has ever seen. I have waited my entire life to hear Captain America say "Avengers Assemble!" and I'm so happy I've lived long enough for my dream to come true. This was an emotional journey and end to The Infinity Saga. I really can say so much more about this crowning achievement in storytelling, but I'll keep this summary short.
Rocketman: It was only a mater of time before we got a biopic about the incomparable music legend Elton John. I was hoping that it would not shy away from his sexuality, addictions and his bright and explosive since of style. Well this film jumped right in and held nothing back and I loved every bit. It was truly a fantastical film that had enough gravity and style. The musical locations illustrate his most important moments in his life and are visually stunning and accurate recreations of his most iconic performances. Taron Egerton was Elton John and I loved that he sang all the music. This was truly a masterpiece.
1917: World War II films are a dime a dozen, but the World War I films are rare. Sam Mendes is one of the best directors and all of his films take you on a journey through the eyes, mind and soul of a character and he did exactly that in this film. The fact that this film is almost shot completely in one continuous take, gives every moment gravitas and tension as you watch our main character go along and across enemy lines to prevent an ambush. The score was truly haunting by Thomas Newman and my favorite piece from this film was from the flare scene. Such an stunning achievement in filmmaking should not be missed.
Joker: The clown prince of crime has had many iterations over the past 80 years. The most influential and canonical version of the character came from Frank Miller's The Killing Joke. Heath Ledger's take was iconic and made you scared because of his unpredictability. Joaquin Phoenix has taken the character and given a truly disturbing and authentic performance. As Arthur Fleck, we see through a constantly unraveling psyche, a man become a new and real kind of monster. Not only is this version the most unsettling, but it was beautiful. The cinematography was great and I loved how we got into the mind and heart of the character when he wasn't even speaking. This is a definition of how a person being pushed through horrible conditions can truly become a monster and yet be free. I loved this film and I think it will be studied in many acting classes from here on out.
Ford v Ferrari: There needs to be more racing films of this caliber! I love racing films that are not just about the cars, but also the drivers and their stories. This film was based on the true friendship between Carol Shelby and Ken Miles and I can't say enough how much attention to detail and heart that was put into every frame. The sound design in this film was crisp and powerful. The performances by both Matt Damon and Christian Bale was truly amazing and they had the best chemistry. Their fight scene was the funniest and most realistic fight I've ever seen between 2 friends. James Mangold is one of my favorite directors because of his focus on characters and story first before the action. This was a love letter to the world of racing and a respectful look at the lives of these pioneers of ingenuity and racing.
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World: How do you make a perfect trilogy? How do you wrap it up with a satisfying and emotional ending? You focus on the story and stay true to the message and heart you started with in the beginning. You let the character bonds naturally grow and make each adventure a learning experience. This film was a perfect ending to the franchise and I can't stress how much I felt like I was with Hiccup and Toothless on their journey to this conclusion. The performances from the cast were stellar as always and although the villain may not have been as great, he still was a good addition. The visuals were the best and the textures in the scales and sand were out of this world. The score by John Powell truly brought me to tears as I got to say goodbye to my favorite companions. If you ever owned a pet, you known the emotional bond that is forged. This was the ultimate pay off and as a pet owner I saw my dog in Toothless' eyes. I will miss this franchise. If you're not crying by the end of this film then something is wrong with you.
The Peanut Butter Falcon: There are some independent films that take a risk in going outside of the norm and telling a story that nobody would have ever dreamed. This film was truly something special and I can't tell you how happy I was throughout. This film focuses on an individual with down syndrome whose dream is to become a wrestler and it is something truly inspirational and heartwarming. Zack Gottsagen was truly brilliant and awesome in this film. I loved his journey and his will to keep going. Shia Lebouf delivers an equally powerful performance and his chemistry with Zack was very sweet. This is one of the best films of 2019 and the most important films of the decade.
And here we are ladies and gentlemen! This is the moment you've all been reading toward. This film was an automatic choice for me the moment the end credits rolled. The crowing jewel of 2019 is none other than.....
Booksmart: I have seen so many high school teen comedies about partying or loosing your virginity before graduation, but never have I seen a film so engaging and focused on the bond of two bestfriends. Their bond was the heart and soul of the film and you couldn't have asked for a better pair of actresses. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever were beyond perfection in every moment of this film and they had me cracking up left and right. Their adventure over the course of one night was truly fun and you are along for the hilarious ride. Billie Lourd nearly stole the whole film out from under them with her surprising and hilarious appearances. The music choices in the film were awesome as well. The comedy in this film was so fresh and from the first 6 minutes of the film you’re locked into these two ladies chemistry. I can't stress enough how much joy this film brought me and for a film to be on my mind for the entire year and to have me constantly recommending it to everyone I know is an achievement of itself. Olivia Wilde has directed a true masterpiece and new definition of a coming of age story. I can't stop gushing about this film so I'll finish off by saying WATCH THIS FILM!
And that is my list of the best films of 2019 and man has it been a great year in film. Lets hope 2020 starts off the decade with a bang! Thanks for reading everyone.

If you love the relaxing, escapist vibes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll love Nintendo’s new camping game Cozy Grove.
“It was just over a year ago, right at the start of the global pandemic we’re all still living through, that our collective obsession with Animal Crossing: New Horizons consumed us… A year later, Cozy Grove feels like the natural spiritual successor to ACNH, based on where we are now vs. where we all were then.”

NBC’s streaming service Peacock has reportedly acquired the broadcast rights for the Eurovision semifinals and finals.
“For the first 60 years of the Eurovision Song Contest, the most viable (and legal) way for U.S. residents to watch it live was to take a trip to a country that broadcast it. That changed in 2016, when Viacom aired the finals on its channel Logo. Logo remained the U.S. home for Eurovision through 2018, and Netflix acquired the VOD rights to both the 2019 and 2020 competitions (though last year’s was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic).”

Netflix’s 2016 sci-fi crime drama Sleight is the offbeat superhero movie you need to watch.
“Sleight is a 2016 sci-fi crime drama written and directed by JD Dillard (who went on to write and direct Sweetheart). It follows Bo, a young Black teen who lost his mother just when he won a scholarship to follow his academic passions. Left the sole guardian of his sister Tina, he turns to street magic and drug dealing to pay the bills and secure a better life.”

Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige apologizes for whitewashing Doctor Strange five years after the film’s release.
“While Marvel’s Doctor Strange was mostly meant to bring proper magic to the MCU ahead of the Avengers’ confrontation with Thanos, the movie also brought renewed attention to some disappointing, racist truths about Silver Age comic characters like Stephen Strange who were products of their time.”

Check out how music lovers can safely attend concerts again as vaccines allow the world to open back up.
“If you’re a music fan, few things can be as life-affirming as seeing your favorite bands perform on stage and losing yourself to the sound. Belting out lyrics, dancing uncontrollably, diving headlong into a mosh pit, or just standing still and nodding serenely—concert-going offers the right mix of euphoria and escapism to help you get through life.”

Get ready to say goodbye (and good riddance) to Internet Explorer, which will be put out of its misery in June of 2022.
“Microsoft is putting Internet Explorer (mostly) out of its misery in 2022, when the company ends mainstream support for the aging browser. On Wednesday, the company announced the official retirement date: ‘With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10.'”

Watch the video for more aboutTom Hardy is one of the world’s most famous and successful actors, starring in international box office hits like 2018’s Venom. And he’s been just as successful in his personal life: Hardy is the father of three children, including two with his current wife Charlotte Riley, whom he married in 2014.
Still, even this massive success hasn’t shielded Hardy from the harsh glare of the media spotlight, which led to the most infamous moment in his career – a verbal throwdown with a reporter who questioned him about his sexuality.
The awkward exchange occurred at the premiere of 2015’s Legend at the Toronto International Film Festival. The hard hitting crime drama earned Hardy rave reviews for his dual roles as both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, real life, openly gay twins who were also gangsters – and, according to some sources, allegedly incestuous.
During the press conference for Legend, a reporter for the LGBTQ periodical Daily Xtra asked a very personal question about Hardy’s life in a very roundabout way.
“In the film, your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality, but given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous.”
With that setup, the reporter eventually asked,
“Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”
Hardy at first seemed confused by the question.
When the reporter indicated that they were referring to an interview Hardy had given years earlier, Hardy got blunt – and then ended the line of questioning.
Well… at least Hardy only bit the reporter’s head off metaphorically and not literally!
Of course, the “why” question was mostly rhetorical, as it was prompted by Hardy’s 2008 interview with the British LGBTQ magazine Attitude in which the star revealed he had previously explored relationships with men.
“Of course I have. I’m an actor for f—s sake. I’m an artist. I’ve played with everything and everyone. But I’m not into men sexually. I love the form and the physicality but the gay sex bit does nothing for me. […] But there’s plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life.”
Initially, the interview went unnoticed, but after Hardy became a star, the quotes resurfaced, leading Hardy to tell Marie Claire in 2011 that the whole thing had been taken out of context.
“I don’t regret anything I’ve ever said. It’s just a shame things are misconstrued and I don’t get the opportunity to explain.”
Of course, that opportunity is exactly what the reporter from Daily Xtra was giving Hardy, leading to quite a bit of debate among fans and in the media over whether the reporter was out of line for asking the question, or whether Hardy’s answer was out of line. Time, for instance, sided with the interviewer.
For his part, Hardy later told The Daily Beast that it just wasn’t the right time or place to ask – or answer – that question.
“I’m under no obligation to share anything to do with my family, my children, my sexuality – that’s nobody’s business but my own. […] It’s important destigmatizing sexuality and gender inequality in the workplace, but to put a man on the spot in a room full of people designed purely for a salacious reaction? To be quite frank, it’s rude.”
Since then, Hardy has mostly kept out of the headlines. In May, 2019, it was revealed that he had been dropped from the Elton John biopic Rocketman in favor of star Taron Egerton, but that was reportedly because of Hardy’s age and Egerton’s superior singing skills. And in June, 2019, Hardy appeared alongside pal Prince Harry at a benefit concert, and later made waves by speaking out against elephant poaching on social media.
Killing it in his career and his family life and paying it forward in the world? Hardy may have given us one of the most uncomfortable interviews in recent memory, but so far, it seems to have turned out okay.

So much excitement came from the Ant-Man and the Wasp press conference in Pasadena, California, last weekend, but what stood out the most for me was Evangeline Lilly’s message to her 7-year-old son who loves violent movies. Her message was how we can all be true heroes by showing a little kindness and compassion towards each other, even our offenders.
There really is no such thing as bad guys. There are only good guys who had made so many bad choices they have forgotten how to make good choices. A true hero’s job is to remind them of their goodness. Not to annihilate them or kill them, it’s to help them redeem themselves.
Alongside this important message was, of course, lots of laughs from the cast of Ant-Man and the Wasp. Did Paul Rudd give himself more lines than the other characters when writing this film? Or was this going to be the day Kevin Feige would finally say something he shouldn’t at a press conference? (Boy, I hope so). And who knew Evangeline could explain the Quantum Realm so perfectly. (She truly is a badass!) Check out the highlights from the Ant-Man and the Wasp press conference below, along with some of our favorite event photos!
Ant-Man and the Wasp opens in theaters this Friday!
Ant-Man and the Wasp Press Conference
Q: For Paul and Peyton. Paul, this is actually the third time you’ve played Ant-Man. How did you and Peyton approach, not only as the sequel to Ant-Man but a sequel to Captain America: Civil War?
Peyton Reed: It is a sequel to both movies, and what was cool about Captain America: Civil War is we could not ignore what had happened to Scott Lang in that movie, in this movie. It gave us an organic jumping off point because my first reaction was… what would Hank Pym and Hope Van Dyne think about Scott taking the suit and getting involved with this and fighting with the Avengers? Well, they’d be pissed off. So it really gave us this whole… starting point where it’s like, well, what if they were estranged at the beginning of the movie, as a result of this? You know, there are ramifications of the Sokovia Accords and Scott being on house arrest, and it really gave us a natural starting point.
Paul Rudd: One of the things that was nice is it gave us, I felt, a little bit of leeway, to lean into something maybe a little harder than we would have been able to at first because now the character has been established and we’ve seen Scott in two other films. People buy the abilities. They buy me in the role. They understand the rules. So it felt as if we had a little bit more freedom to… you don’t play into the humor. Would Scott do this? Would he make this, would he say this kind of thing? Would he make this kind of choice?
Whereas I think the first time around we were still modulating and so that was one of the really fun parts about this. I feel like we kind of went into it with a… let’s try it. Let’s go, let’s go. People… people know who this guy is already.
Q: Since Mr. Rudd helped to write the first movie and now this movie, do you all feel that he gave you guys as many good lines as he gave himself?
Peyton Reed: I’ve said this before. Paul’s as generous a writer as he is an actor. Paul could easily say, I’m getting all the lines. You’re not going to say this or do this, but you know, Paul always has the whole picture in mind when he’s writing and acting. Is that correct, Paul? Because that’s my perception.
Paul Rudd: I try and think of the film as a whole and I think of every character — but I will say this. This has been a collaborative effort, more than anything I’ve ever worked on and to think that I actually wrote it would be a gross overstatement. The truth of the matter is, Peyton has been working on this for a long time. Same with our producer, Stephen Broussard. Same with Kevin. But in particular, two writers, Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, who did a lot of the heavy lifting and those guys are great. I tip my cap to them.
Q: Peyton Reed, what in this movie was the most daunting sequence, and you were happiest to have finished when you filmed it?
Peyton Reed: There were a lot of daunting sequences because we really wanted to set out and go nuts with the Pym-Particle technology in this movie, and it occurred to us at some point, well, maybe it’s not just ant-man and wasp who can shrink maybe grow. What if it were vehicles, buildings, and other things, and we really wanted to go nuts with it. But what that did was create some real technical challenges.
We did a whole car chase that took us through the city of San Francisco and we wanted to do a chase that you just simply wouldn’t see in any other movie because of all the size changes. So that was probably the biggest challenge.
Q: Michael Peña is not here, but we have to talk about Luis. Mr. Peyton, how much fun was it for you to kind of expand his role and for Paul and Evangeline, the chance to play in his storytelling, flashback, something?
Peyton Reed: I think it was important. You know, I’d never done a sequel before, and I think one of the things I like in sequels is progressing the characters. In looking at the characters of Luis and Kurt and Dave, the ex-con guys, in the first movie, they’re ex-cons and they’re really trying to stay out of a life of crime and they discover what it feels like to be a hero. In this thing, it really felt like, let’s start them from a place where they’re on the straight and narrow now. They’re trying to start a small business. Scott’s involved in that business and he’s almost out of house arrest and are they going to make a go of this business?
I like the idea that this movie would have huge stakes, huge personal stakes, but also the success of their business also has huge stakes and particularly for Scott, I think that’s a thing he’s really wrestling with. In terms of the Luis storytelling, that’s always a fun thing to shoot and what we do basically is we shoot Michael telling the whole story, I’ll cut together, you know, the preferred takes and do basically what we call a “radio cut” and then, for example, if it’s Paul or Evangeline’s turn to do their lip syncing, we’ll take that little section on set, play it over and over through speakers so they can hear it and then just go at it multiple times, until we get a performance in it and something that syncs.
Q: Evangeline, since Wonder Woman, I get a little weepy any time I’m watching women kick ass in a movie. So I’m wondering, what was your favorite part of that wonderful fight sequence in the kitchen? Or just kind of on the whole what you loved doing with Hope and the Wasp in this film.
Evangeline Lilly: I loved getting to be a Bladerunner. That was pretty cool. The knife gag in the restaurant scene is very, very cool. I love the element of having somebody who’s completely in jeopardy, but also completely in control. As a superhero, that’s awesome. I saw that a lot like when the mallet comes down to hit her. You can see the oh, shit moment, but then she’s completely in control the next second. It was just fun to finally get to see her take on the mantle because this is something that she’s been ready and willing to do her, basically her whole life. Her parents are both superheroes and she was rearing to get in that suit for an entire film and we never got there. To actually see her fighting at that moment was, was wonderful.
Q: Is anyone comfortable explaining some of the quantum science that we play within the film?
Evangeline Lilly: I actually can answer that question because I really love quantum physics and always did before this happened, and that’s one of the reasons I was excited about this brand. I really dig quantum physics and, at one point, we thought the atom was the beyond all and end all; that everything ended at the atom. That was the smallest nucleus in the world, but actually, we discovered that the atom is kinetic and that atoms exist in multiple places at the same time. That was scientifically proven, and once you discover that, then you know that matter is kinetic and the matter is displacing all the time. If it can be displaced, it can be warped. If you can warp it then you can warp size. If you can warp matter and also, can you warp time? Can you warp reality? Can you warp universes?
Q: Kevin, speaking of the Quantum Realm and how we’ve been introduced to it and now in two films, three with Doctor Strange, what is the future of the Quantum Realm? Are we going to see it in future films?
Kevin Feige: Yeah, without giving anything away. These are all storytelling tools; new places, new things. In the first film, we got a glimpse of it for people who like to go through frame-by-frame, there was a little silhouette of Janet as the Wasp in there, which is a big story element in this movie. There are things that you see back there, that Peyton has put in there. Where and how they pay off in the near term, in the long term… remains to be seen.
Q: Hannah, there’s so many antagonists and villains in this role. I always ask the villain, was there a purpose and do they see themselves as the villain?
Hannah John-Kamen: Absolutely not. I definitely approach the character, not as a villain, at all. Definitely a threat to the characters and the heroes of the movie, but when you play a villain, you have to play it like you’re the good guy and everyone else is bad. The stakes are so high, she has such a clear objective in the movie and you know, every man for himself. Every woman for herself.
Q: Laurence Fishburn, as this the first Marvel role that came your way? And how come it’s taken so long for us to see you in the Marvel mode?
Laurence Fishburn: It is not the first Marvel role to come my way. In fact, years and years ago I ran into a guy named Tim Story who directed the movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and I said to him, “I am Norrin Radd,” and he said, “Who?” and I said, “I am Norrin Radd, and Norrin Radd is the guy who becomes the Silver Surfer and works for Galactus,” and all that stuff. So I voiced the Silver Surfer, Rise of the Silver Surfer and then I’ve been a reader since I was eight and a fan my whole life. I’ve really enjoyed the movies, and everything that they’ve done with MCU has been fantastic because what they’ve done is brilliantly braid the source material with, and bring it on into the now and so it’s amazing.
I realized that I was on the lot with Marvel, working at Blackish at ABC/Disney, and remembered that I had worked with Louis D’Esposito a hundred years ago. I thought I should go talk to them. Say, hey. What do I got to do? Who do I got to talk to, to be in the movies and they were kind enough to say, you know, we’ll think about that, Fish.
A couple weeks later they were like, you know about this guy? And oddly enough, it was a guy I didn’t know about. Although I was a Marvel reader and a D.C. reader, mostly Marvel, I did not know about Bill Foster. I knew about Hank Pym because I think, and you’ll tell me if I’m right or wrong, but Ant-Man and Wasp became Avengers at some point. Did they not? That’s why I knew about Hank Pym and I knew about the Pym article and all of that, but I never got to Foster because I was never an Ant-Man reader. So Peyton sat me down and was kind enough to allow me to join the family and I’m just, I’m a kid in a candy store, man. Just having a good time.

About Ant-Man and the Wasp
From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.
Evangeline Lilly’s Message to Kids – Ant-Man and the Wasp Press Conference So much excitement came from the Ant-Man and the Wasp press conference in Pasadena, California, last weekend, but what stood out the most for me was Evangeline Lilly's message to her 7-year-old son who loves violent movies.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Introspect: A Look into the Web-Head
With a sequel well on the way, Spider-Man catches our hearts just like flies. Here we look at the reason behind the vigilante’s success.
By Malachi Johnson
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well-known for its vibrant and humorous characters, with one of the greatest of these being Spider-Man. Surprising audiences with his supporting role in Captain America: Civil War, then moving onto leading his own feature film with Spider-Man: Homecoming, the teenage wall-crawler swung his way into our hearts. Now, Spider-Man is taking his fight against crime outside of New York City. According to an interview from io9, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated that the sequel to Homecoming will be filmed partially in London: “And we shoot a lot of films in London but there’s another reason we’re shooting in London which is, yes, Spidey, of course, will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe.” Although the context of his travels is currently unknown, it will be intriguing to see Spider-Man outside of his normal environment of the Big Apple. According to IMDB, this untitled sequel is projected to be released in July of 2018.
Introduced in 1962 on the pages of Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man is currently one of the most recognizable heroes around. Before he was the world-famous superhero, Peter Parker was a normal high school student with a love for science and photography. After losing both of his parents at a young age, Peter was sent to live with his caring Aunt May and Uncle Ben in Forest Hills, New York.
One day, while on a school field trip to a scientific demonstration, Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider. The venom from the spider granted Peter extraordinary abilities, such as enhanced strength, agility, a precognitive sense for danger, and the ability to adhere to surfaces. Using his extreme intelligence, Peter also created “web-shooters” wrist-mounted mechanisms that fire an elastic substance, mimicking a spider’s webs. Peter decided that he would use his newfound abilities to become a performer and gain fame and fortune. He created a suit that would hide his identity from audiences and dubbed himself “Spider-Man.”
One day, Peter encountered a robbery in progress, but instead of stopping the thief, he let the man go free. Peter wasn’t a police officer, he didn’t see any reason to get involved. Sadly that thief went on to murder Peter’s uncle. Peter donned his persona once again, this time to capture the criminal responsible. It was then that Peter discovered the mantra that has inspired generations since its conception: “With great power, comes great responsibility.”
Many of you probably know this story, most likely due to the fact that since 2002 there have been three separate live-action film series. What is it about this character that keeps bringing people back? Naturally everyone has their own reason for liking certain characters but most notably; he’s relatable. Marvel has characters like Captain America, a World War II super-soldier with an indestructible shield, and Iron Man, a multi-billionaire with more inventions than he knows what to do with. Spider-Man is a high school student. Sure he can swing on buildings and fight six criminals at once, but he still has to worry about getting good grades and curfew. Even when he grew up in the comics, one of his main concerns wasn’t super-villains, it was paying rent in New York City. We all enjoy the heroes who can do it all, but we love the heroes who fight the same battles that we do.
