KARVA CHAUTH HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE
There are several stories in Bhagavad Gita that relate the Karva Chauth to the mythological period. Among all the stories, Queen Veervati story is the most popular one. The story is that the Queen Veervati’s 7 brothers tricked her to break her first Karva Chauth fast by presenting a mirror in the form of moon as they couldn’t bear their sister in such distress. As soon as she broke her fast, she got the news of her husband’s death. She was shattered after hearing the news and kept on crying until a Goddess appeared and revealed the truth to her. The Goddess asked the Veervati to complete all the rituals, as result of that Yama, the Lord of Death was forced to release her husband’s soul.
According to Mahabharata this is the day when Arjuna went to the Nilgiris alone. In his absence the other Pandavas faced various problems and to help them Draupadi worshiped Lord Krishna who suggested her to keep Karva Chauth fast for the well-being of her husbands. She completed her fast with proper rituals which thereby helped Pandavas to get over their problems.
There are many other stories related to Karva Chauth including Satyavan and Savitri and Pati-vrata woman Karva.
