AUTHORITARIAN DEMOCRACY V WESTERN DEMOCRACY #302
https://grahamperryonchina.com/?p=2359 AUTHORITARIAN DEMOCRACY V WESTERN DEMOCRACY #302 - GOOD MORNING FROM LONDON #302 I was tempted today to comment on Oliver Shah’s quite confused column in today’s Times Business Section on Wall Street + China, but I don’t want to be blown off course from an overarching key topic – China and Democracy. A key issue going forward. Many Westerners do recognise China’s growing importance in the world + respect its achievements. They can see that millions of Chinese have been freed from poverty – a big success as poverty continues to abound in so many developing countries. And the same Westerners have visited China, pre-Covid, and witnessed for themselves the natural contentment and happiness of the Chinese. China’s Turnaround since 1949 will be increasingly seen as one of the most remarkable historical achievements And yet there is one big topic that remains a big divide between China supporters and China’s critics – human rights. The focus for the West is the Rule of Law, the Separation of Powers, Habeas Corpus, One Man One Vote. And here China needs to establish that it can continue to produce prosperity, growth and stability and at the same time provide its people with basic democratic freedoms. As often mentioned, the West + China has travelled quite different paths to the present day. The West has wrestled important concessions from Kings + Princes down the centuries which have worked to protect individual liberties from encroachment by economic + monarchical interests. The dominant character of Chinese History down the centuries, however, has been quite different – a strong centralised rule with autocracy + dynasties and with less focus on individual democratic rights. In the West, we have had Plato, Socrates, Maimonides, Rousseau, Bentham, Locke and Morris who have given Western democracy a growing focus on individual rights. And important protections have been won by struggle – the UK Great Reform Bill of 1832 as an example. So Western liberals struggle with politics in China, with its authoritarian democracy and the power of the Party. But China has a Story To Tell. SOCIALISM OR CAPITALISM? #286
https://grahamperryonchina.com/?p=2301 SOCIALISM OR CAPITALISM? #286 - GOOD MORNING FROM LONDON China is in uncharted waters. Never before in history has a country reached the stage of social development that China has attained. 1bn people lifted out of poverty. A State that offers prosperity, stability, lifestyle choices and a vision going forward. One part of the narrative is the reaction of previously leading countries to the arrival of China at the Top Table. Some historians, with justification, believe that World War 1 happened because the old European Imperialist countries refused to make room for a new dynamic Germany from 1870. Today the US cannot contemplate relegation from #1 to #2 and tensions ensue. But today I am looking at China and the increasing prominence of China’s CAC – the Cyberspace Administration of China. China has allowed +encouraged technology groups like Alibaba and Tencent to grow + develop. It has brought benefits to China – growth, employment, rising incomes, increased profits. “It’s Capitalism Running Free” says the anti-communist world gleefully. But is it? That is why I say “uncharted waters”. Today China is ruled, not by capital or capitalists, but by the Party. The Party is the Trustee for 1.4bn people and will embrace Capitalism on the Party’s terms, not the Capitalists’ terms. In China today, the Regulator has teeth – ask Jack Ma. So it is not rampant capitalism as such. It does mean Billionaires and Wage Differentials but the end goal is the Prosperity of the People and not the emergence of political influence for the money makers. This may not be Marx’s Gotha Programme or Sir Thomas More’s Utopia or Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. This is Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and it is challenging people’s perceptions of progress, prosperity, democracy and governance. Uncharted waters – for sure. Tomorrow – Human Rights and Democracy. - #biden #kerrybrown #martinkettle #profsachs #starmer #vincecable #xijinping - https://grahamperryonchina.com/?p=2301
