8 Questions to Ask Before Applying for a PhD admission in 2024
Tumblr media
When considering a PhD admission 2024, especially with an eye on admission in 2024, it’s essential to approach the process with a strategic mindset. The decision to pursue a PhD is substantial, involving years of dedication, hard work, and resources. Before applying, asking the right questions can help ensure that the program aligns with your academic goals, career aspirations, and personal circumstances. Here are eight essential questions to ask before applying for a PhD in 2024:
1. What Are My Long-Term Career Goals?
Start by reflecting on why you want to pursue a PhD. Consider whether your primary aim is academic, such as becoming a professor or researcher, or if you plan to apply your expertise in industry, government, or a non-profit setting. Not every PhD program prepares students for non-academic roles, so aligning your career aspirations with the program’s offerings is crucial. For those interested in non-academic careers, some programs provide professional development opportunities, like industry internships or workshops on transferable skills.
2. How Competitive Is the Program and What Are the Admission Requirements?
Admission requirements can vary greatly across universities, departments, and programs. Some programs have specific prerequisites, such as a master’s degree in a related field, while others accept students directly from undergraduate studies. Check if standardized tests (like the GRE or GMAT) are required, along with minimum scores, and what weight the program places on prior research experience, publications, or academic achievements. Understanding these requirements can help you evaluate your eligibility and strengthen your application.
3. Who Are the Potential Supervisors and What Are Their Research Specialties?
The relationship with your PhD advisor is crucial for your success. Research potential supervisors and explore their recent publications, projects, and research interests. Look into whether they have been published recently, how often, and in which journals, as this can provide insight into their expertise and standing in the field. Finding a supervisor whose research aligns with your own interests increases the likelihood of support and guidance throughout your studies.
4. What Is the Program Structure and Timeline?
Different programs have different structures, timelines, and expectations. Some PhD programs are highly structured with a clear progression of coursework, exams, research, and teaching responsibilities, while others offer a more flexible approach. Inquire about how long it typically takes for students to complete the program, and if there are options for acceleration or flexibility. Understanding the structure and duration will help you plan for the long haul and stay motivated through different phases of the program.
5. What Funding Options Are Available?
Funding can make or break a PhD journey. Explore the types of funding offered by the program, including scholarships, fellowships, teaching or research assistantships, and stipends. Some programs fully fund their students, covering tuition and providing a living stipend, while others may only partially fund them. Investigate additional external funding opportunities, such as grants or scholarships, and weigh them against the cost of living in the location of the university. Ensuring sufficient financial support can greatly reduce stress and allow you to focus on your studies.
6. What Are the Program’s Graduation and Employment Rates?
High graduation and employment rates can be indicators of a program’s quality and the success of its graduates. Find out how many students complete the program and how long it typically takes. Ask where alumni are currently employed—whether they are in academic, industry, or government positions—and how quickly they secured employment post-graduation. Reviewing the career paths of alumni can provide a sense of the program’s effectiveness in preparing students for their desired careers.
7. What Support Services and Resources Are Available to PhD Students?
Pursuing a PhD is both challenging and rewarding, often requiring robust support. Universities may offer various student services and resources, such as mental health counseling, career services, writing centers, research workshops, and networking opportunities. Some institutions also provide professional development resources to help students prepare for academic and non-academic job markets. Evaluate the availability and accessibility of these support systems to help you handle the demands of a PhD program.
8. How Does the Program Address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?
Finally, consider the program’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). A diverse academic environment enriches research and learning experiences by bringing in varied perspectives. Investigate the program’s DEI policies, representation of underrepresented groups, and support for international students. Programs that prioritize DEI often create a more supportive and collaborative atmosphere, essential for personal and academic growth during your PhD journey.
Conclusion
Applying for a PhD is a significant step that requires careful evaluation of multiple factors. By asking these questions and understanding the answers, you can make a more informed decision that aligns with your academic, financial, and career goals. Each question helps illuminate a crucial aspect of the PhD experience, ensuring you embark on this journey with clarity and confidence.

Aadujeevitham Box Office Triumph: Prithviraj's Survival Saga Shines on Day 5
Prithviraj Sukumaran's latest venture, Aadujeevitham, continues to set the box office ablaze, surpassing Monday's test with flying colors and outshining recent Malayalam hits.
After a stellar opening weekend, director Blessy's survival drama Aadujeevitham showcased resilience as it navigated through Monday, maintaining its stronghold amidst the ebb and flow of daily collections. The film, which has garnered widespread acclaim since its release, exceeded expectations on Monday, setting a new benchmark for Malayalam releases in 2024.
Tumblr media
Despite a predictable dip post-weekend, Aadujeevitham recorded a commendable nett of Rs 5.25 crore in the domestic market on Monday, marking a 39 per cent decrease from its Sunday earnings, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. With this, the film's total domestic nett now stands at an impressive Rs 35.55 crore, with a global gross of Rs 64.85 crore.
Aadujeevitham maintained an overall occupancy rate of 53.74 per cent across Malayalam markets on Monday, showcasing consistent performance throughout the day. Morning shows commenced with a 40.85 per cent occupancy, steadily increasing to 52.52 per cent in the afternoon and peaking at 61.26 per cent in the evening. Even night screenings maintained a robust 60.31 per cent occupancy.
In its home turf of Kerala, Aadujeevitham raked in Rs 3.85 crore on its fifth day, with 255,885 admissions across 1,387 shows, achieving an impressive occupancy rate of 66.79 per cent.
The film's Monday collection notably surpasses other 2024 Malayalam blockbusters such as Manjummel Boys, Premalu, Bramayugam, and Abraham Ozler, further solidifying Aadujeevitham's status as a game-changer in the industry.
Aadujeevitham's success defies conventional norms, as it lacks typical mass appeal or fan-centric elements. Instead, its triumph signifies a shift in audience preferences and viewing habits, bolstering the industry's prospects.
In addition to its box office prowess, Prithviraj Sukumaran's stellar portrayal of Najeeb has earned widespread acclaim, with critics lauding his career-best performance. Despite initial skepticism, Sukumaran's portrayal of Najeeb exudes authenticity, elevating Blessy's narrative to new heights.
As Aadujeevitham continues its triumphant march, it not only celebrates its own success but also paves the way for a new era in Malayalam cinema, characterized by innovation, authenticity, and unparalleled storytelling.

MP Boy Ved Lahoti Tops JEE Advanced 2024 with Record-Breaking Score
In an impressive display of academic excellence, Ved Lahoti from the Delhi zone has topped the JEE Advanced 2024 exam with a remarkable score of 355 out of 360, setting a new record for the highest-ever score in the history of the examination. This year’s results also reflect an overall increase in the pass percentage, signaling a rise in the academic standards among aspirants.
Tumblr media
The Rise in Pass Percentage and Cut-offs
The JEE Advanced exam, the gateway to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), saw a notable increase in the pass percentage this year, jumping to 26.77% from last year’s 24.26%. The qualifying cut-offs have also risen across various categories, highlighting the competitive nature of the exam.
A total of 48,248 candidates have qualified for admission to the 17,740 seats available across 23 IITs. This year, 180,200 students appeared for the exam, held on May 26.
Top Performers and Their Unique Strategies
Ved Lahoti, originally from Madhya Pradesh, attributed his success to the “positive pressure and healthy competition” he experienced while preparing in Kota, Rajasthan, a renowned coaching hub for JEE aspirants. Living alone in Kota, Ved received visits from his mother every two months, allowing him to focus intensely on his studies without distractions. His hard work and perseverance paid off with a record-breaking score and the top rank in the country.
In contrast, Dwija Patel, who topped among female candidates with an impressive score of 332 and an All-India Rank of 7, prepared for the exam from her home in the IIT Bombay zone. Dwija preferred the comfort of her home environment, avoiding the need to adjust to a new setting. She joined a nearby coaching institute, allowing her to focus entirely on her studies without the stress of relocation.
Both Ved and Dwija, like many other top performers, aspire to secure a seat in the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) program at IIT Bombay, which remains the most sought-after branch among the top rankers.
Regional Performance and Zone Contributions
The IIT Madras zone, which includes states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry, has once again emerged as a significant contributor to the pool of qualified candidates. This year, 145 of its candidates have ranked within the top 500, with four out of the top ten hailing from this zone. The region continues to maintain its reputation for producing high-caliber students, echoing its performance from previous years.
Other notable contributions include:
IIT Delhi Zone: 10,255 qualified candidates
IIT Bombay Zone: 9,480 qualified candidates
IIT Roorkee Zone: 5,136 qualified candidates
IIT Kanpur Zone: 4,928 qualified candidates
IIT Bhubaneshwar Zone: 4,811 qualified candidates
IIT Guwahati Zone: 2,458 qualified candidates
