What's usagi's relationship with his family (past and or present) in uuau :0
WEEEEE SO GLAD U ASKED !!!!
so ! usagi didnt exactly have a Family bc his village raised children communally, all the adults were considered guardians and there were no specific parents or anything BUT
katsuichi had taken him in to train at a young age and after an Incident (causing usagi to be kicked from the village when he was like. 7-8) katsuichi became his adoptive father (usagi still called him sensei tho)
soon after that, usagi served mifune as well, and katsuichi and mifune were his main family for most of his life !
mariko and kenichi were also his childhood friends in his era (dubbing the future the “usagi era” and the past the “tmnt era” for simplicity) but they lived in a different town that was a bit of a long trip to get to ! however they were the only ones usagi rly considered close friends and family
INNN THE TMNT ERA !! is where usagi meets most of the known yojimbo characters !!!! he first meets yukichi who is an ally of the tmnt and is someone who enthusiastically warms up to usagi rly easily bc rabbits gotta stick together and whatnot ,,, jotaro is yukichi’s little relative that he is tasked with babysitting a lot , and jotaro quickly got attached to usagi bc they had the same black markings :]
tomoe ame is another ally of the tmnt but not from the start like yukichi was , she’s more of a rebellious spirit who fights in the war despite her father’s wishes
chizu is a part of the neko ninja , a gang on the streets who sway loyalty to whoever pays the most coin
kitsune and gen i havent thought much about yet since i want them to be more recurring but theyre there too !!

About Mariko
🇧🇷:
🇺🇸:
In the history of the comics, as I remember, she was Miyamoto Usagi's playmate, there was also a rabbit named Kenichi who he and Usagi had a bit of a rivalry for Mariko's attention, but it was clear that she liked them both. (although he liked Usagi more) Usagi and Kenichi went there to train to become samurai and Mariko only met them again in adulthood. Besides, I remember that before Usagi went to serve Lord Mifune, Mariko invited him to a picnic... but something happened.
In short, something else happened and only after a long time did Mariko discover that she was pregnant, expecting a bunny, but she didn't tell Usagi so he wouldn't give up everything to be with her, so Kenichi married her to hide it. that. This is how Jotaro was born. And only after years did Usagi discover his paternity, but he couldn't ruin the paternal relationship that Kenichi has with Jotaro, at least for a while he spent time with his son who he found out about before but he didn't know that Usagi also knew , so Jotaro didn't say anything. What family! I don't know about the rest, it wasn't on the wiki.
But I hope that in the series if Mariko appears, the story will be different, because her thing with Usagi hurt them both, they both wanted to be together but life separated their paths, it's sad, better hope that this time Everything works out so that no one else suffers.

“the daisho is the soul of the samurai,” but honestly your mileage will vary
daisho are symbolic of the samurai class. but even among samurai, swords yield different meanings to the characters of Usagi Yojimbo.
gen loses his swords (gets them taken from him) and doesn’t give a shit once he finds a nicer replacement. there’s a value of sentimentality that strikes him once he realizes these new ones were the same daisho his father wielded, but overall gen doesn’t seem to put much stock in tradition. it’s his personal history that makes these swords irreplaceable.
tomoe, i can only speculate on. she was denied the destiny of taking over her father’s fencing school, despite being the superior swordsman among his children. she brings a bokken with her (or acquires one?) after moving into the Geishu castle as a lady-in-waiting. the samurai daisho, in her case, are just one more status symbol she’s been arbitrarily denied. the first time we see her wield a sword in her backstory, it’s something she stole off a ninja’s corpse because she is a swordsman, not a spearsman. and there’s frankly no time to be anything other than practical when the geishu castle is under attack. the sword back then is just a tool in her hand, even if it is one that suits her like nothing else.
(does she keep that sword? we just don’t know. probably not. we never see her as she gets her swords, so it’s possible that her daisho are, to her, representative of new beginnings, of this new purpose she’s risen to beyond her original station. maybe they go on to become more than a symbolic soul to her, maybe.)
usagi on the other hand, has had his swords since he was roughly sixteen, ever since he won that tournament. they were presented to him by mifune. he bested kenichi to get them. they were exquisitely made. there is so much history wrapped up in them, and he has always thought of them as more than mere symbols. they are manifestations of his character that he wields in his hands. every decision he has ever made, he carries the blood of it in those swords. he heals with his hands too, has saved people by cutting others down, but taking a life in any case is irreversible. it’s never been something he takes lightly.
(fuck. usagi cut off mifune’s dead head with those swords.)
he can’t get a new pair. in many ways he is a ghost in his own life, and he has so few things from his past that he holds on to. for all that he’s achieved this kind of easygoing serenity post-adachigahara (and i think there is a very good reason we don’t see any comics of him until two years of wanderings later), those swords are a pillar of his mental security and a part of him will die if they get destroyed.
but i wanna see what he’ll do next anyway, if that were to happen.
#usagi yojimbo#edit: general spoilers for gen and tomoes respective backstories#rammbley and not as coherent as it could be but it’s been stewing in my mind for a while#*rambley(?)#miyamoto usagi#there was this one dude who got his swords destroyed in his quest to retrieve a clan’s heirloom treasure daisho. he was very much a Real#Samurai but his swords getting trashed honestly didn’t seem to bother him much. he had other stuff going on to be fair#pizzazz meta

Until I came across a stack of recent collections at my local library, I hadn't read any Usagi Yojimbo for a few years -- I knew I'd missed all of the recent full-color collections, but not that I'd also missed a few from the end of the series at Dark Horse, back when it was still published in black-and-white. If you haven't read any for a while, either, the series is as good as ever, and as much as I liked the old uncolored books the newer collections are fabulous, too. These are the three I liked best.
Usagi Yojimbo: Mysteries (Volume 32) by Stan Sakai. Introduction by Yuki Matsuzaki. Dark Horse, 2018. 9781506705842. 180pp plus a cover/pinup gallery. Contains #159-165 of UY Volume 3.
Usagi comes across a dead, high-ranking samurai in the woods, and finds a little girl hiding nearby. On his way to take her to Inspector Ishida, they're accosted by some samurai who want the girl and even go so far as to attack Usagi when he's buying her a meal. It's a huge mistake and only the beginning of a larger mystery that starts with finding the girl's father's confession. Thieves Kiyoko and Kitsune make an appearance, and of course my favorite scenes are the "The Body in the Library" chapters.
Usagi Yojimbo: Homecoming (Volume 35) by Stan Sakai, colors by Tom Luth. Introduction by Peach Momoko. IDW, 2021. 9781684058020. Contains #8-14 of UY Volume 4.
This volume starts with a graphic lesson on how tatami mats are made, which plays into the plot. Usagi heads to the north province where he grew up. He crosses paths with samurai transporting new tatami mats for Lord Gifu, who will use them as part of a tea ceremony for an emissary of the shogun. When the samurai are attacked, Usagi helps defend the tatami from the ninja. Later Usagi is pursued because he continues to wear the mon of Lord Mifune, which begins a journey to his home village, Mariko (the woman he loved), and Kenichi, his childhood friend and rival. Katsuichi-sensei (Usagi's teacher) and Jotaro, who is secretly now Usagi's son, also make appearances. The best part of the color version: seeing the blue Usagi wears during the fight scenes.
Usagi Yojimbo: Tengu War! (Volume 36) by Stan Sakai, art assist by Randy Clute, colors by Hi-Fi Design. Introduction by Kevin Eastman. IDW, 2022. 9781684058754. Contains #15-21 of UY Volume 4.
Usagi seeks his other master, a one-handed tengu named Sojobo. There's a flashback to how Usagi earned the right to be trained by him, and, in the present day, as you might guess from the title, Usagi finds himself in the midst of a war between supernatural creatures. Toward the end of the story he meets someone from his past, from just as he fled the battlefield with Lord Mifune's head. And then Usagi meets Yukichi, who remembers when their paths crossed years ago.

Wrote this for another thing but i know I'm not gonna be able to wedge it in so I’m chucking it out here! Spoilers for Travels with Jotaro / Fathers and Sons (and also Usagi’s backstory):
Usagi's heart is in his throat.
He splashes along the bank of the river calling Jotaro's name, scanning the rocks and run-offs and shallow pools for a flash of white fur or purple kimono, dreading what he's going to find. Surely Kenichi taught him how to swim. Was he even conscious when he went in the water? Was he hurt? The current is so strong here - how far would it have dragged his body before it spit him out? How deep is it? Could he have gotten caught between the rocks?
He's so small….
What if Usagi already passed by him without noticing?
Usagi stumbles to a halt, wracked with indecision. His chest heaves. He scans the river up and down. The cold water froths around the rocks undisturbed. Jotaro could be drowning. He could be bleeding. He could have broken all of his bones.
Gods, Usagi thinks, charging ahead, Please let him be safe. Please let me find him.
The light starts to fade quickly under the trees. Well before the sun has properly set, Usagi is forced to slow his pace so he doesn't miss Jotaro in the gathering dark. When it falls completely, he has no choice but to stop. He paces fretfully. It’s pointless to fumble around in the pitch black.
Usagi sits on the bank with his face in his hands - he can't bear looking at the river - and strains his ears for the faintest sound of a familiar little voice calling his name over the trickling water.
….It's been a long time since he found himself thinking of the night his Lord became a widow and childless, but his mind won't settle and it's hours before moonrise. Adachigahara is so fresh in his mind, it often feels as if he lived it yesterday. But it was the ninja attack that changed the trajectory of Usagi's life, and so many others. It gets pushed into the back of his mind, a quiet lapse in his own judgement, simply because he hadn't known better at the time.
He had only been in Lord Mifune's service for two years. He did what he was told to do and followed his senior's lead during a crisis.
Gunichi was right. Usagi did have a duty to protect his Lord. It had felt foolish to have to be reminded of that in the moment - but Usagi should have followed his instincts that night. He should have gone to Tsuruichi and Lord Mifune's wife.
It might have made all the difference in the world.
It would have been worth any punishment.
Usagi remembers how quiet Lord Mifune's halls were in the long months that followed. He remembers how lonely the gardens seemed. He remembers the shroud of grief and anger that laid over the castle, and how Mifune wrapped it around himself and wore it like a second skin. How it bowed his shoulders and darkened his eyes. How he cared for nothing but revenge and how it drove him to his death, and how Usagi allowed himself to be swept up in the tide without even comprehending it.
He was little more than a child then, himself.
What did he have to weigh it against?
He had been so bitter about his own loss, his own sense of failure. (He had to come to terms with the fact that he was still alive in spite of them.) Now he understands. And he wishes that he didn't. He would burn the world as well for one small child, even if it didn't bring him back.
When the moon rises, Usagi climbs to his feet and continues to search.
-
Jotaro is alive and well and Usagi's relief is beyond measure. He puts a hand on Jotaro's chest as the boy is sleeping that night, in the hay beside Gorogoro. Usagi does it just to feel the rhythm of his breathing, just to let it sooth his heart.

btw Usagi’s timeline in Dirty Paws kinda looks like this:
6-10: trains under Katsuichi-sensei, returns to the school he attended with Mariko and Kenichi and bests Kenichi in single combat
11-13: retainer for Mifune, grows closer to Mariko
14: WAR, sees Mifune die and escapes with and buries his head, begins life as a ronin (Jotaro is born sometime here)
15: 1st Battle Nexus chasing death, defends Splinter from Drako
16-17: traveling his Japan, meets Gennosuke and several other Yojimbo characters like Tomoe Ame and Noriyuki
18: 2nd Battle Nexus, meets Leo
19: Leo lands in 2nd Earth, Real World pts 1/2 and Samurai Tourist happen
20: you are here
#bridget.txt#making this shit up on the fly bc 03 Usagi is SO much younger than Yojimbo Usagi but wanting to fit Yojimbo elements into the timeline#he’s had a VERY rough decade#teen dad of the century

Aside from the Rise characters, Jei, and the Usagi family, what other characters (from Usagi Yojimbo comics or the Usagi chronicles) do you plan to add??
No need for concept art, just possible names 😃
hi
(Oh good cause I don't have any art to show) Lord Hikiji, Lord Hebi, Big Mama. Lord Mifune, Tiger Claw, Alopex, Mariko, Jotaro, and Kenichi. Chizu, Kitsune, Tomoe, Gen, Toshiko, Kintaro, and Tetsujin. Some characters will have a bigger impact than others, but will mostly be supporting or side characters. We will rarely see any of these other characters enter the scene in a permanent sense until the future has been established, although its a lot of characters on top of pre-existing characters, so we may only see a smaller increase to the permanent roster.

𝐌𝐈𝐘𝐀𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐎 𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐆𝐈 𝐀𝐍𝐃: 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘.
changed the whole layout of my day just to get on and make this post. anyway below the cut i'm going to outline all of the things i'm stealing from usagi's source material, usagi: yo.jimbo, to add to his 2003 characterization. i AM going to be pretty picky because i think it's fair to say that the character in 2003 is not exactly the character from the yojimbo comics - this is just to help flesh him out a little. bear in mind that usagi is canonically around 16 when we're introduced to him at the battle nexus tournament, so things will have to be adjusted from his canon proper in order for his age in the show to make sense. tws for death/death of a parent, murder, other various gritty samurai things.
usagi was raised as the only son of a village headman, though he did not spend much time at home. he loved and respected his father, and, later, was granted leave from his training to travel back to his home village and pay his respects at his father's grave.
at age 3, typical for most young boys being trained to be samurai, he was given his first wooden katana to train with. he learned to fence very quickly.
eventually he was sent, along with childhood friend/rival kenichi, to train at the dogora school of bushido. while travelling there, a group of dishonourable students set about attacking an old man (he's literally a lion) in the street. the old man held his own and beat the students despite being vastly outnumbered. usagi, enamoured with his technique and style, set about trying to convince this man to become his sensei instead.
the man (lion), katsuichi, initially refused to train usagi - until usagi convinced him by standing outside of his house, morning and night, for days on end, through rain and sun, displaying his tenacity and determination. he is so annoying i love him
usagi was katsuichi's only student, but he was mischievous and sneaky enough to make this poor guy feel like he had a whole class. stole a sword from a dead soldier once. nearly got his hand cut off trying to return it. just usagi things
around here is usagi's first foray into the battle nexus; he's 13, still training, and about to beef a fully grown dragon
when usagi 'graduated' at age 15 he was brought to a fencing tournament hosted by the dogora school and won the fuckin thing because of course he did. the last bout of the tournament was up against kenichi, who did in fact attend dogora school and became its top student. upon winning this tournament, usagi was gifted the daisho he uses still today; the katana, yagi no eda (willow branch) and the wakizashi, aoyagi (young willow).
the guy that intervened and stopped usagi getting his hand cut off for the thieving thing up there turned out to be the daimyo, mifune. he was in attendance at the tournament and was like. i gotta get this kid on payroll
so he did
im not giving this child a son. i just don't think that would be fair to anyone involved. jotaro i love you though good luck out there kid
it's just hit me now that they call usagi a 'ronin' during his introductory episode which means all of the trauma must have happened before he turned 16. this is the most miserable i've ever been
i won't even sugar coat it man ninjas were hired to assassinate mifune and killed his wife and son. this sparked a big war in which mifune was killed by a barrage of arrows on the battlefield. usagi had to perform his final duty, i.e cutting off this guy's head and burying it somewhere secret to save it from desecration
oh also one of usagi's closest friends goes turncoat that battle and runs away. dw though usagi murders him for it later!
happy 16th birthday usagi. do you want to go to the battle nexus tournament and get a boyfriend. cool
now we're all caught up. he's going to kill gunichi soon-ish. at around 17/18 i figure. after the events of samurai tourist.
#theres sooooo much more im taking for myself but this was already so long and nobody is going to read it anyway#𝗨𝗦𝗔𝗚𝗜 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟯 : one alone is not enough.

with
raph
that would be so *chefs kiss*
Oh it would change so much.
I think Raph made it out better then Leo. Still has injuries and a cracked shell but no where near the damage Leo had.
This leads to Raph having to explain who they are and what happens while Leo is still unconscious. Raph is not cleaver enough to hide his powers. The people this he either and oni or a Kami and he has Leo under his protection. They are two different species after all.
Once Leo wakes up they ask him what happens and he gives the same story but he leaves out his powers. He doesn’t know that Raph already let the cat out of the bag.
Usagi still ends up hurt during training and spending time with them but Raph is just as excited about the possible way home as Leo.
I think Raph recovers first and starts trying to be helpful/earn his keep. Leo is already doing this by working in the infirmary. He gets a position as a guard but that means spending time away from Leo.
It’s at this time Usagi’s carries Leo outside to sit under the Sakura tree. (He has to carry Leo he’s missing a leg) it plays out mostly the same but right after Lord Mifune’s conversation with Leo Raph rolls up.
The biggest change would be the fight with the neko. My guess is by this point Leo and Raph had already had a heart to heart about Leo being babies and Raph’s stress as leader and Splinter’s comment. So when Leo says “hey I think this is where the attack is coming from.” Raph’s already ready to go. The two absolutely demolish the Neko clan.
Raph is nervous about Leo portaling on one leg but not nearly as freaked out as Usagi.
My main guess is Raph walks in right after leo and Usagi’s confession (let’s say he was helping clean up the mess) he’s got some mixed feelings. On one hand he likes Usagi. He’s helping them find away home. On the other that’s his little brother) it helps when Usagi and him go out the next day with the plan for a letter home and Usagi asks permission while also expressing his desire to go to New York with them. (He was going to ask permission earlier but the confession was a spur of the moment thing)
The big change would be the Kenichi part of the story. Cause Raph Ain’t letting any of that fly.
Yes there are a million little shifts that happen with Raph’s presence in the story
