While beginning to photograph interesting ice patterns left by the dropping tide, I realized there were two men in hi-viz down there stringing some devices along the shore. They look like they may be sensors of some sort, but I can't see them lasting very long. They also look like they could be explosive charges. They were going around here some years ago with similar sensors and a ground shaking machine to see about fracking. Not sure how that went, but I've seen no new wells in town. Perigean Spring Tide First of all, I know it's autumn. That's not what a spring tide is. It is a tide that springs up, more than normal. The tides in the week or so following a new or a full moon are spring tides. Those preceding them are neap tides. The moon has an elliptical orbit, that is, at times it is closer to the earth than at others. The nearest and furthest points of an orbit are perigee and apogee. When there is a new moon it is between the earth and the sun, the illuminated side facing away from us. If it is directly in line, we get an eclipse. When this occurs at its orbit's perigee, there is a greater effect on the tides. Sort of a super new moon, but instead of seeing the moon, we see the tidal effects. All of the things that cause a high tide can add up and reinforce each other, compounding the effects. On Friday it was about a foot higher than the day before at the bridge. The path beside the river was barely even a noticable path in the river. Where the caribou were laying down the other day was submerged. The Flats where the soil is red was submerged. The pier was once again nearly a dock, and the dock was just about at its maximum. The stairs leading to the bank at Cunningham Park lead straight into the river. Kenai City Dock at High Tide The road to the Tarbox Viewing Platform (I found out Tarbox is the name of the people who paid for it) became much more of a causeway than normal. The City Dock Pier was more like a dock itself. From Cunningham Park From the boardwalk at Cunningham Park you can see where the river bends around the opposing Bank, creating a peninsula. The stairs leading to the bank have themselves become the bank. You can see the S-shaped turn the river takes towards the bridge, illustrating the other side of where the caribou were the other day. Zooming in on the house sized boulder is when I spotted the blows of the belugas. They didn't show up well, but upon close inspection there is actually a beluga surfacing on the left side of the last photo.
