our story
A/N: Just in case you don’t know I’m a hardcore Harry Styles fan and Fine Line belongs to a museum so I thought of this (I’ll list the songs at the end) if you haven’t listened to it yet I recommend you to do it, it’s really a masterpiece. I won’t put any warnings because there aren’t any, except some angst anyway I hope you all love it, if you do, let me know! Had to repost because the links weren’t working and I didn’t know how to fix it so yeah lol
WORDS: 2071.
PLOT: George recapitulates his life with Lola as she walks down the aisle.
PAIRINGS: George Mackay x ofc.
She (she)
She lives in daydreams with me (she)
She’s the first one that I see
And I don’t know why
I don’t know who she is (she, she)
Maybe it was the pink hair that had completely grabbed his attention towards her or maybe the different flowery jumpers she used to wear almost every day; the thing is, George realized as days passed by that she owned a lot of them, with different colors and patterns, not because he stared at her all of the time like a psycho -or maybe a little-, but because she just outshined everyone wherever she was by the way she dressed and how spontaneous her personality seemed to be.
It was a Monday morning, it was really early and everyone looked like crap including him, except for her, she was doing one of the girls’ hair while looking effortlessly beautiful, now the locks of her hair were violet and a nose piercing made its first appearance; George was mesmerized by her and only realizing how much he was staring when someone hit his head in the back. Really hard.
“Careful! You idiot.” He said while massaging the back of his head.
He was about to get up to follow Andrew, who was already walking off while laughing but a little giggle stopped him in his tracks; turning around, he directed his attention to the make-up section where she was looking at him with a funny expression on her face, her cheeks blushed when she realized he heard her. George smiled at her and when she smiled back his heart stopped for a moment. Cheesy. But it was a start, he thought at the time, he still didn’t even know her name but it was a start. Definitely.
Sunflower
Sunflower
My eyes
Want you more than a melody
Let me inside
Wish I could get to know you
“Lola please, it’s just a coffee. If you hate me after it, I won’t talk to you or even look at you” he pleaded.
He had finally gotten her name, it suited her, he thought. George had reached out to her one night while she was organizing her stuff, after that, they started to talk almost every day on set; early in the mornings when no one really wanted to talk they’d be laughing at some stupid conversation topic.
But George wanted more, he wanted to know other things rather than the superficial stuff, he wanted to really get to know her.
Lola crossed her arms and huffed, George thought it was funny how intimidating she was even when he was way taller than her, it was like she was always the one in control, and he found himself already liking this side of her.
“I told you I don’t like to get involved with people from my job, I’m still working my way into this industry and I don’t want to fuck it all up” she said, very serious and looking really concerned about her place at the time and George almost instantly regretted being so insistent.
“I’m sorry, you’re completely right,” he saw Lola’s face transform into a look of surprise and relieve, maybe it was the first time a boy actually listened to her and understood her reasons; “but, please, keep doing my make-up, Rose makes me look like a Ken doll whenever she gets her hands on my face and I creep myself out when I look in the mirror.” He tried to ease the moment with a not-so joke.
Lola let out a laugh and nodded. He smiled at her and started to leave not before leaning in and kissing her on the cheek, before turning on the opposite direction he caught a glimpse of her blushing and smirked.
Before he could cross the door, he heard her let out a curse under her breath and a heavy sigh right before she called out his name, asking him to come back into the room.
“Fine, let’s grab a coffee, but I get to choose the place.” Lola said with a shy smile. It was the first time she didn’t look as her confident self, he thought.
“It’s a date, then” George smiled satisfied and she furrowed her eyebrows.
“Not a date, it’s just a coffee.”
Tastes like strawberries on a summer evenin’
And it sounds just like a song
I want your belly and that summer feelin’
I don’t know if I could ever go without
Watermelon sugar high
Every day it passed he realized how much of a free old soul she was. Lola loved exploring and finding places; like one time in England when she found an abandoned theater with a little museum inside and made him spent the night, it wasn’t creepy at all because they also found out stray dogs lived there. Maybe if he made a top three of their dates, it would’ve been number two because now, as he stared at the ocean right in front of him while he seated on the top of a rock he thought this date would be placed in number one for sure.
Not only because he loved the beach and how private and intimate this place was, but how beautiful she looked with that loose white dress she was wearing, her hair up in a messy bun, and her cheeks red because of the sun.
“I could stay here forever,” he said mostly to himself as she was eating a piece of watermelon, she nodded, her mouth full. It made him laugh at her, she looked like a little girl doing a mess.
“I wouldn’t though, this place gives me the creeps during night because those rocks there look like a skull when its dark and some friends say they heard a woman crying once.”
“Oh, we are not staying then. Definitely not.” Lola nodded agreeing with him while she cleaned her hands, once she was done she laid her head on top of his thighs.
George smiled down at her and looked straight into her eyes and then down to her lips, Lola grabbed the back of his neck leading his lips into hers.
The kiss was soft but loving, her lips tasted sweet and he thought how he could never get tired of her.
Lola was something else.
But I can feel it take a hold (I can feel it take a hold)
I can feel you take control (I can feel you take control)
Of who I am, and all I’ve ever known
Lovin’ you’s the antidote
Golden
“Lola, sweetheart, would you help me over here?”
“Of course!”
George looked at Lola as she helped his mother with some recipe for a dessert she had found on the internet.
He didn’t know why he couldn’t stop staring at her, maybe the fact that it was the first time in four years -five almost-, he saw her with her natural hair color and she looked absolutely stunning, her nose ring was still there but her factions were way more mature.
Or maybe it hit him how much they had grown together, how many moments they lived, great and not so great, and how much he loved the way his family adored her.
He loved her. Lola had him since the first moment he landed his eyes on her and then never let him go. She was his treasure, his gold, his everything and he was so happy knowing he was the exact same thing for her.
It was then when he looked down at his pocket and felt the little delicate ring his grandmother gave to him. He never felt more ready.
There’s things that we’ll never know
You sunshine, you temptress
My hand’s at risk, I fold
Crisp trepidation
I’ll try to shake this soon
Spreading you open
Is the only way of knowing you
We’ll be a fine line
(…)
We’ll be alright
The apartment was dark and silent. It felt as it was completely empty. Yet it wasn’t. George was sitting at the end of the hall, his back against your shared bedroom door, it was long time ago when he last heard you sob, he figured you’d be sleeping by now but still it didn’t felt right to come in.
He hurt you, he was well aware of it, yet he couldn’t do anything about it. He knew he had no control over this part of his job, the traveling.
He knew Lola liked to pretend she was doing fine, she didn’t like to be seen as fragile or dependent, she was raised that way, he could never blame her, but it was hard sometimes when George wanted nothing but to know what was hurting her, it was so hard to get Lola to open up about how she was feeling.
He would feel like she didn’t trust him, and distance fucks things up most of the time when trying to talk things through, she was stubborn and he wasn’t patient.
George got up and slowly opened the door, she was facing him and he could tell she was peacefully sleeping by her calm breathing.
He sat on the edge of the bed and looked at Lola, her nose was still a little red, he noticed her eyes had gotten a little swollen too, it broke him because he hated being the reason behind her suffering.
George caressed her cheek, then her arm, slowly and lovingly; he looked at her hand, his grandmother’s ring decorating her finger. George felt his chest getting heavy and his sight getting blurry from the tears so he closed his eyes letting them fall, it hurt him too, he hated to leave her for so long, he hated not being there for her accomplishments or her difficult times and vice versa. Sometimes he felt his love wasn’t enough.
George opened his eyes startled as he felt her hand cupping his face. Lola was looking at him, her sight holding sadness and tiredness but yet he could feel the love on her delicate touch.
“Come here” was all she said.
George laid beside her and she hugged him, their faces inches from each other, he kissed her forehead as she closed her eyes.
“We’ll be alright” she said before falling back asleep, and George held to that promise.
And oh we started
Two hearts in one home
It’s hard when we argue
We’re both stubborn
I know, but oh
Sweet creature, sweet creature
Wherever I go, you bring me home
Sweet creature, sweet creature
When I run out of road, you bring me home
All this moments, the good and the bad, the really low times when they had nothing but each other to hold on to and the happiest of times when they also had each other to share their joy.
It all came to flashes to George’s mind as he saw her walking down the aisle to him, her white gown with little golden flowers decorating it perfectly, she had her hair up but he could still see the pink on the ends of it falling loose from her hairdo, just like the first time he saw her.
And maybe, he thought, he wouldn’t be able to promise her a perfect marriage but he could promise her his devotion and all the love and adoration he felt for her.
Because he loved Lola since the first time he saw her, when she still had a baby face with round cheeks and so many doubts about her future and he loved her now as the successful woman she had become, so confident, so smart and so beautiful.
When she finally arrived to him, he realized he was crying when she laughed and cleaned his cheeks with her fingers.
“Oh please George, you’re going to ruin the Ken doll make up” she said jokingly.
“Yeah, joke all you want. Look where just a coffee leaded us too” George said and Lola looked at him with a confused look, he smirked at her and then she gave him a look, realizing what he meant.
“God, George, can we please get married before I regret it” she said making the priest laugh.
“You had 8 years for that” he bragged, “fine, let’s get this done milady” he took Lola’s hand winking at her as the priest started speaking.
He stared at her. She was perfect. This day was perfect.

REVIEW: SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium (1999)
When it comes to 2D fighting games during the early/mid 90’s, there’s two names that absolutely dominated the scene with their releases and became household names;
SNK and Capcom.
To this day they remain some of the most well respected and most loved games companies in the fighting game genre, so the prospect of a crossover between the two companies back then was certainly a tantalising thought.
In November of 1999, we got just that in the form of SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium for the Neo Geo Pocket Color system.
While this wasn’t the first time we’d see the brands clash in a single game (that award goes to SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash, released earlier that year), it was the first time they would meet in the setting of a tradition versus fighting game.
The game was a critical success, and was followed up with entries in the genre that many consider to be the best fighting games ever made.
So, with the bar set so high with this historic title, it finally sees a re-release on the Nintendo Switch almost 22 years later as part of Nintendo’s Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection series, alongside games such as SNK Gals’ Fighters, The King Of Fighters R-2 and Fatal Fury: First Contact.
So, does it still hold up all these years later?
Let’s find out…
Gameplay
First of all, there’s a number of different ways in which players can play through the tournament mode (and regular versus mode); you can either go 1-on-1, fight a 2-on-2 battle as a tag team, or as a team of three in an elimination match. This variety of battle styles appeals to players who may be used to fighting in different forms.
Want to play this like a King Of Fighters game? Go ahead!
How about like the Marvel Vs Capcom titles? Play as a tag-team to your heart’s content, my friend!
For a game that utilises just two attack buttons, there’s a surprising amount of depth to how special moves are executed as well. Instead of relying on the four-button approach that SNK based their games on or the usual six-button layout in many of the Capcom fighting games, SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium’s control scheme actually focuses on how long the A and B buttons are pressed.
The longer a button is pressed, the higher the amount of damage it causes (but takes a hit to how quick it is), mimicking the LP/MP/HP and LK/MK/HK button functions in games such as Street Fighter II and Darkstalkers.
It’s a simple system that works wonders, and makes the amalgamation of each games franchise’s special moves work together seamlessly.
The game also boasts three different “power gauge” command styles to choose from too;
AVERAGE - This is similar to the traditional super gauge in the Street Fighter games, where once the gauge is filled up, more powerful versions of normal attacks can be pulled off.
COUNTER - This is a more defensive approach that allows counterblows while evading enemy attacks. It also has an exclusive function in the form of “critical hits”, which do greater damage if they successfully hit an opponent.
RUSH - This one only fills up when chain combos are successfully executed, and although this gauge nerfs your normal attack damage, super moves can be done at any time (as long as there’s enough juice in the tank, so to speak).
So no matter which side of the fighting game coin you land on, there’s definitely a playstyle in SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium that will suit you perfectly.
In the original release, if players wanted to play against each other, a link cable and another console were required, making it something of a inconvenience. Thankfully this new Switch port has 2-player versus available straight away by using the two joycons.
Story
The game’s main storyline centres around a not-so-subtly named fighting tournament known as the “Battle Tournament of Evil”, which promises the victor the title of “World’s Mightiest” and a ridiculously high amount of prize money.
The benefactors and organisers of said tournament? None other than Fatal Fury’s Geese Howard and Street Fighter II’s M. Bison!
This newly formed alliance of nefarious (and powerful) psychopaths has an ulterior motive with the tournament, and intend to create an “immortal military” whose first wave of elite soldiers are to be the captured contestants.
The character stories vary slightly depending on whether an SNK fighter or a Capcom fighter is chosen, and the game’s ending depends on the outcome of a specific match during the tournament where a player faces off against their rival.
Putting together the two “Big Bads” that are synonymous with their respective franchises is a great move and the fact that players can get a “bad ending” through poor performance in just a single match ups the ante somewhat as well.
Roster
SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium’s roster is comprised of 26 different fighters (18 of which are immediately playable, with a further 8 that are unlockable) from across the various SNK and Capcom franchises;
From the King Of Fighters, Fatal Fury and Art Of Fighting games, we get Kyo, Terry Bogard, Iori, Ryo Sakazaki, Mai and Leona.
From Psycho Soldier, we get Athena.
From the Samurai Shodown series, we get Haohmaru and Nakoruru
From Street Fighter II, we get Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile and Zangief.
From the Street Fighter Alpha series, we get Sakura and Dan
From Darkstalkers, we get Morrigan and Felicia.
The unlockable fighters in the game are from a good mix of the various games series, and there are 4 to unlock for each side.
It’s an impressive roster for a game that was released on a platform like this, and does a great job of bringing together the more familiar faces of Capcom’s games with some perhaps lesser known fighters from the SNK side.
Graphics
SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium’s stylised graphics are one of the most immediate things players will notice about the game.
The character sprites are more cartoonish versions of each fighter’s normal likeness and all strictly adhere to a 3-colour palette. Considering the history of alternate looks for 2D fighting game characters being simple colour swaps, this simplistic look works really well for the most part (well, Zangief might be the only exception here…).
Seeing the fighters in motion is also a joyous thing too, as the movement during fights is fluid and animated to a brilliant degree. Even the animations when characters are idle feel charming in this game!
A large problem with fighting games on handheld systems during this era was that they all too often felt like an attempt at creating a scaled down version of the bigger, more technically advanced games to fit the lower specs of the systems, ultimately resulting in a crappy version of the game.
Games such as this, along with many other titles in the Neo Geo Pocket Color library, always felt like they were made from the ground up to fit the system, so they not only played well, but they also looked very unique in a really positive way.
SNK Vs Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium is arguably the best of the bunch, and it deserves praise for it.
As is par for the course with retro fighting game re-releases on modern hardware, there’s also some extra display options to help things feel like the real deal, but with this (and the other NGPC releases on the Switch), there’s the option to view the game in a mocked up fashion on a number of different Neo Geo Pocket Color models. It’s a nice touch that effectively shows the amount of care being put into this port.
Stages
The stages in the game are essentially a megamix of different locations from several SNK and Capcom games, ranging from the helicopter wreckage in The King Of Fighters ‘94’s Brazilian jungle, the Great Wall Of China from Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dreams and the crashing rocky waves of Japan from Samurai Shodown to the cloudy Japanese castle of Ryu’s Street Fighter II stage, Morrigan’s spooky Scottish Darkstalkers cave/lair combo and the moving train carriages that pass by Mount Rushmore (over and over again) from Fatal Fury 2.
There’s plenty of references for longtime fans of these games to spot, and they have been recreated perfectly to fit in with the game’s visual style.
I mean, sure, some of the characters in the backgrounds do look a little murky and lack detail in places, but when you consider that the screen on a Neo Geo Pocket Color was a smaller, low resolution affair, it can be ignored for the most part!
Replayability
SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium’s gameplay experience is essentially split into two halves.
One one side, you have the regular versus game modes and a story mode to fight through, as one would expect from pretty much every fighting game. On the other side is the unlocking all of the hidden characters and beating a plethora of minigames to earn new special moves.
This is where the game’s replay value truly shines through, and its nice to see that it’s all present in its original form on the Switch port.
These extra games are known as “Olympic Mode”, and is divided up into separate SNK and Capcom sections. While both sections do share some of the same minigames, such as the 100-round survival match, Time Attack and the “whoever gets connects with the first hit, wins!” mode, there are also a couple of games that are unique to each brand.
On the SNK side, managed by Samurai Shodown’s Rimiruru, we get “Targets” - a shooting game that sees players assume the role of Marcus from the Metal Slug franchise as he shoots down as many aliens as possible. We also get “Blade Arts” - where players take on the role of Samurai Shodown’s Jubei as he slices through as many straw dummies as possible before a timer expires.
On the Capcom side, managed by Street Fighter Alpha 3’s Karin, we get “Ghost Trick”; which sees Ghosts ‘n Goblins’ Arthur having to jump across platforms to collect treasures on each side of the screen while avoiding a pesky Firebrand that pops up between them. The other challenge - “Cat Walk” - is a Dance Dance Revolution-style minigame that sees players have to quickly input buttons as they are announced so that Felicia can dance along.
These extra modes are pretty challenging, and undeniably make the game feel so much more complete, while also showing some much deserved appreciation for other iconic games in both companies’ back catalogs.
Final thoughts & overall score
SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium is fondly remembered by many as one of the best handheld fighting games ever released, and the Switch port further cements that notion, bringing the series into the modern era.
The visual style of the game still oozes charm, the gameplay system still feels immensely satisfying and the wealth of extra playable content that is packed into it puts many of the more well known titles of the era to shame.
With the features of the Nintendo Switch implemented, the small handful of nagging issues that came with the game’s original release are now completely fixed, making this not only a cool item of interest for fans of either SNK or Capcom, but an absolute essential for any fighting game fan.

2017 Meltdown Drags: Gassers, Altereds, Rails and More Celebrate the Bygone Days of Drag Racing
After attending the last four (of eight total) Meltdown Drags events held mid-July at the famed Byron Dragway (aka, The Playground of Power), we can tell you with absolute certainty that this is one of the coolest independently staged vintage drag racing events in the country. Organized by the Meltdown Drags Association (MDA), a consortium of dedicated Midwestern drag racers, the event was created to celebrate the bygone days of the sport, not for the sake of winning trophies or huge cash payouts, but for the mere fun of it.
All proceeds from the event (with the exception of the gate fees collected by track owners BJ and Ronda Vangsness) cover the MDA’s production costs. Should there be any funds left over, those monies are recycled back to the racers in the form of some pretty impressive door prizes: drag slicks, engine parts, tools, a welder, floor jacks, and so on.
In a way, the racers benefit from the gate fees, too, as BJ and Ronda use the money to make running improvements to the Dragway, including the construction of a new three-story tower, a new concrete starting pad, public showers, and the cleanest restrooms at any racing venue in the Midwest.
This year’s Meltdown Drags hosted a grand total of 557 vintage dragsters, gassers, altereds, Super Stock, and altered-wheelbase cars from 1966 and earlier. Entries came from all over the Midwest, but also from as far away as California, Nevada, Utah, and even Europe. Many of those attending were members of race groups including the ScottRods AA/Gassers, Great Lakes Gassers, Nostalgia Gasser Racing Association, and Nostalgia Super Stock Association.
A number of events within an event, Meltdown Drags 8 featured a well-attended swap meet and car show, a Miss Meltdown Drags pin-up girl contest (won this year by Betsy Boondocks), a model car contest, and a Young Gun Award, which celebrated the debut of three second- and third-generation teenage drag racers. Meltdown Drags 8 also saluted our veterans with a field of American flags placed trackside along with a color guard and 21-gun salute by American Legion Post 97 and VFW Post 8739 prior to the Saturday evening race session. Featured guests at this year’s event included “Camfather” Ed Iskenderian and gasser great Robert “Bones” Balogh.
Sounds like a lot going on in one place, eh? Take a look!
Ideal: With ideal summer weather and temperatures in the low 90s, attendance figures for Meltdown Drags 8 topped 13,837 spectators, some of which came from as far away as Hawaii, Sweden, and Great Britain.
Fowl Play: Talk about diversity! “Rocket Joe” Hickenbott’s Wisconsin-based Fowl Play ’57 C/Gas Ford Thunderbird kicks off the event by taking on Jay Rogers’ Iowa-based Hustlin Henry C/Gasser. Both cars hail from the Great Lakes Gassers.
Legends: Featured guests at Meltdown Drags 8 were gasser great Robert “Bones” Balogh (left) and “Camfather” Ed Iskenderian, seen here signing autographs in front of the Nosse Brothers Racing trailer. Other luminaries at the Meltdown included AA/Fuel Altered legend “Gabby” Bleeker and former Ramchargers hot shoe Merek Chertkow.
On the Bumper: A perennial favorite at Byron Dragway is ex-Chicago police officer Mike Bolina’s wheelstanding ’56 Chevy sedan. Although fans love Mike’s bumper-dragging wheelies, the Tri-Five suffers from occasional “guardrail rash” every now and then.
Anglia Envy: Leader of the ScottRods AA/Gassers is Seneca, New York’s Al Borowski and his all-steel, 496ci pearl green Anglia.
Two Crazy: Two more examples of ScottRods team cars include the It’s Crazy AA/GS Anglia owned by Brian and Tami Spotts, and Bob Cook’s Cleveland, Ohio-based alcohol-burning 496ci Crazy Grandpa ’57 Chevrolet Corvette. These cars put on quite a show with their eighth-mile burnouts. Cars run eighth-mile for safety reasons.
Wildest: The Gasser Wars booth featured a fine lineup of vintage Willys gassers, including the rainbow-hued, ex-Mura Brothers ’41 pickup with a blown 426 Plymouth Wedge engine. It is still “The World’s Wildest Willys.”
Airborne: Another bumper-dragging favorite at Byron is Chicagoland Tri-Five racer Nick Shervino and his candy gold and red ’57 Chevrolet Bel Air. Wheelies like this are par for the course for old Nick!
Rebuilt: Believe it or not, this is the same vintage Chrysler three-window coupe Deluxe featured a couple of years back (“Kohlmann’s Krysler Koupe,” Nov. ’16). Well, sort of. A slight disagreement with a concrete barrier last year forced owner-builder Brian Kohlmann to completely rebuild it into a full-on NHRA-legal altered. Car did some hellacious burnouts.
Anglia Battle: Michael “Toad” Neal’s Dixie Fever squared off against Tod Barker’s America’s Lil Bit (from the Ohio Outlaw AA/Gassers) in the battle of the Anglias. Next to the vintage ’33 and ’41 Willys and Tri-Five Chevrolets, the Ford Anglias were the most plentiful with dozens entered.
Young Guns: In keeping with the family tradition, future drag racers Cole and Oliver Buck test their reflexes on the Hot Wheels track. Winners were awarded actual Mattel Hot Wheels sets in an all-kid Hot Wheels eliminator.
Young and Old: Young Matthew Mothershed wheels past a competitor from the Nostalgia Super Stock Circuit with wheels-up racing (a best of 9.98/132.00) being the order of the day. Matthew’s ’62 Plymouth is powered by a Mancini Racing “413” (actually 498ci) Wedge. The “Old Driver” referred to in the rooftop lettering is Matthew’s dad, Dennis, CEO of event co-sponsor Victory Driveline Components and Performance Parts.
Ramble: Getting back to that diversity thing, here we see Ohioan Denny Perry’s Straight Shooter 401 AMC Rambler American squaring off against Ken Kappper’s Chevrolet-powered C/Gas Henry J in wheels-up action.
AA/Gassers: Two more ScottRods AA/Gassers go at it, with Tim Irwin’s Crazy Man’s Toy Anglia besting Ed Kasicki’s Phenomenon chopped ’33 Willys coupe. Both cars are powered by blown Chevrolets.
Ted’s Tribute: The Ted’s Performance Shop ’37 Chevy A/Gasser is quite reminiscent of the old Vintage 37 Chevrolet gasser of yore, and with big-block Chevrolet power, it runs as good, too! Driven by Ted Beach, the coupe runs in the 8s.
A Gas: The Psycho Pass ’48 Anglia A/Gasser is another regular at the Meltdown Drags. Here, driver Ryan Hanlon squares off against Murphy Flats, Missouri’s James Toczylowski in the De-Railed ’41 Willys A/G pick-em-up.
Hustler: Randy Stone’s Bootlegger A/Gas ’55 Chevrolet sedan unofficially won the Chi-Town Hustler Burnout Award, and you can see why. These vintage gassers really put on a show!
Hairy Willys: Meltdown Drags event co-organizer Paul Zielsdorf had his Hairy Hauler B/GS ’41 Willys pickup (“The Hairy Hauler,” Mar. ’16) tuned and ready for the event. Unfortunately, with Paul being one of the major go-to guys at the race, runs like this were limited to only a couple a day.
Tech: Meltdown Drags tech inspectors stayed super busy teching a registered 557 cars.
Flying Bug: You see all kinds of cool stuff competing at the Meltdown Drags. Case in point: Kentuckian Paul Combest’s C/Gas VW Bug takes on—and defeats—this ’55 Chevy C/GS with a nicely executed holeshot!
Time Capsule: Talk about drag racing in a time capsule. Seeing the light of day for the first time since 1962, this small-block-Chevrolet-powered C/Gas ’41 Willys coupe driven by Bruce Frumweller handily dispatches a ’57 Pontiac gasser in the far lane.
Flat Fast: Now here’s some real rolling nostalgia. Bob Huberty’s HA/GR flathead dragster on the tower side takes on a similarly powered D/A Model A Tudor owned by Floyd Craig.
Custom Push: When being period correct counts, there’s nothing like a ’50s-style custom ’51 Ford F1 pick-em-up to get the job done!

#KnowFear
To overcome fear, we must first understand it. Salem Horror Fest * Sept 21 – Oct 15
Salem Horror Fest examines American fear with a month-long celebration of terror and social justice partnership with the Peabody Essex Museum
SALEM, Ma. – Salem Horror Fest, in partnership with the Peabody Essex Museum and CinemaSalem, today announced four weeks of screenings, parties, concerts, panels and exhibits that explore societal themes of fear and anxiety in horror at the Halloween capital of the world; Salem, MassachusettsAmidst the notorious backdrop of the 1692 Witch Trials, the festival will feature a city-wide program set to kick off at the Peabody Essex Museum on Thursday, September 21 as part of the PEM/PM evening party series in conjunction with their upcoming exhibit “It’s Alive” Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection.
“We live in fear. Fear of failure, commitment, each other and beyond. It’s one of the few things that unites us all. Salem knows this more than most,” said festival director Kevin Lynch. “The cinema is a graveyard of cultural reflections trapped in time like a celluloid ouija board. If we are to overcome fear, we must first understand it.”
Following the Opening Night Party on Thursday, September 21, Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead) will accept the first-ever Salem Horror Award on behalf of Duane Jones for his cultural contribution to the genre as one of the first positive representations of a person of color on the big screen in George A. A concert performance by queer, negro-gothic soprano M Lamar will be held at Ames Hall on Friday, September 22 featuring a program The New York Times called an “otherworldly, goth-tinged projection into the distant future of our violent, racially and sexually charged present offering a space of melancholic, alluring, ultimately stirring reflection.”
Four films will be screened in the PEM’s Morse Auditorium with panel discussions exploring subtextual themes of cultural fear found in Night of the Living Dead, Matinee, Gods & Monsters, and The Haunting.

All these events can be found on Eventbrite and Facebook. (Creative Salem members receive $50 off a VIP all inclusive pass! Please look for an email with your special code!)

A New Documentary Explores the Work of Legendary Rock Photographer Mick Rock
Over the years, the rock documentary has become an increasingly lampooned genre of filmmaking, giving rise to such parodies as Hard Core Logo, Brothers of the Head, and Documentary Now's Gentle and Soft: The Story of the Blue Jean Committee Part 1. Tomorrow, VICE Documentary Films and director Barnaby Clay fire back with the release of Shot! The Psycho-Spirtual Mantra of Rock, a new film profiling the life and work of iconic rock and roll photographer Mick Rock. Growing up in London during the 60s, Rock was quickly embedded into his community's booming music scene. He went on to spent the next two decades running around London and New York, snapping what have become truly emblematic photos of stars including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and Queen.
The story is told entirely from Rock's perspective, the filmmaker even prefacing the film with the decree that all its materials used came from the "mind, body, and soul of Michael David Rock." With the exception of a few audio recordings taken in conversation with David Bowie and Lou Reed, Rock's voice is the only one heard throughout the whole film. In fact, the very first scene is a staged reenactment of a cocaine overdose he suffered in the mid-90s. The photographer is shown in present day form looking over the body of his younger self, as he lies splayed out on the operating table of some sullen hospital floor.
The dreamlike sequence is emblematic of a greater theme that runs throughout the film: self reflection and internalization. After spending his life documenting the lives of others, Rock takes a step back and looks inward, narrating each step that got him to where he is today. Intimate studio interviews, never before seen archival footage, and original stills trace Rock's cinematic adventure through the dazzling glam rock scene, the grit of NYC punk, and the excesses of the 1980s.
Shot! is thus a considerable departure from the traditional "rock doc." Creators recently spoke with Barnaby Clay to try and get better sense of his process:
Creators: How you were first introduced to Mick's work? How did you get involved with the film?
Barnaby Clay: I've been familiar with his work since my early teens. My sister owned Transformer, the Lou Reed record, and played that a lot when we were growing up. Its a very striking image. I remember just seeing that ghostly face staring out at me as a kid. I was like, 'Who is that?' I flipped it over and theres another crazy picture on the back cover with that guy with the big bulge in his pants, and the leather cap. At my age these were pretty intense images.
A couple years later at school I started getting into the Stooges and discovered Raw Power. Seeing that image on the front of Raw Power that Mick took was again something that really stuck with me. Then maybe in my early 20s I went to a show in London of Mick's that was primarily his Syd Barrett pictures from the Madcap Laughs Sessions. When I found out he shot all these other covers, I realized the breadth of his work, and the iconic imagery from that period that he's responsible for, but I would say it was really those two images from Raw Power and Transformer that really stuck with me from the beginning.
Years later in New York I came across Mick"s manager, Liz Vap. We became friends, and she introduced me to Mick a couple of times but really just in passing. And then I got a call one day saying that he was trying to make a film. He'd been talking about it for years, and I think he finally got to the point within himself where he was ready to actually do it. So they were looking for directors. I was kind of, in a way, a director-for-hire at that point, and got interviewed for the job. He had already met a bunch of people, but I think we hit it off because we came from the same part of London, we both really focused our careers on music imagery, worked within the same sort of genres, and both had made this type of transatlantic journey that started off in London and ended up in New York. For him I think those factors were all very important because it just meant that I could get him and his story, so thats really when he said, "Yeah, let make this."
So you set out to make the film. What was it like working with him? Did he have his own vision of how he wanted it to look or was it more of a collaborative process?
When it came down to putting it together, concept-wise, I was given a lot of freedom, and that was really important to me because, as much as I am a huge fan of Mick and his work, I don't consider myself a documentarian. I'm somebody that's made music videos, commercials, and a lot of short films but really wants to make narrative feature films more than anything else. My one prerequisite when I signed on was that I could get to do this my way. Everyone was fine with that.
Obviously we had to agree on a concept, though, and I came up with a number that I pitched to him and the financiers. I remember in a very early meeting he told me about his near-death experience and how after many years of cocaine abuse he ended up nearly dying. And he talked about how that was such a big thing for him and how we should obviously go into that. So we did but this actually became a bit contentious further on down the line. He had this image of himself that he remembered where he was just lying there in the hospital basically waiting to have open heart surgery after experiencing a series of heart attacks. When he told me about it, he was like, "Yeah you should have some of that in the film," and to me that just suddenly stuck out as an image and I thought, "Whoa. That would be great!" To have somebody on their deathbed recounting their life to themselves seemed like an interesting concept and a fun one.
We had a lot of discussion within the edit about things which he deemed too far, and I'd push and he'd pull, and it went on for years basically. I love documentaries and I definitely like ones on music, but I just feel like so often they're just the same kind of thing. We've all heard about people who have got on to the fame wagon and it just going horribly wrong from riding too fast or whatever. For me, my job was to try and tell that in a way which was somehow exciting and different.
You wanted to create something that distinguished itself from the canon of rock documentaries.
Yeah, I mean, I just don't see enough of that in documentary these days. They used to risk more, like British filmmaker Ken Russel did back in the 60s. They're like music videos basically, just totally over the top, packed with incredible imagery, and I just really admired him for going there and trying to do it that way. There's a million ways to tell a story like this and it would be very simple for me to have done a straight-up 'talking heads' thing but I just didn't want to do that.
Another thing which became very important within the film was the idea to tell this entirely from Mick's perspective. He's the only voice within the film apart from the two recordings of Bowie and Lou Reed because for me I am more fluent to the idea of poetic truth and rock and roll myth. Some of these facts that he comes out with, or stories that he'd tell, might not be 100% reliable, but at the same time it's his version of the events and I like that.
As I'm sure Errol Morris would tell you, the idea of having one person telling the story is really difficult—it becomes soporific after a while. Those sequences with the hospital, the operating theater, they became very useful as breaks from hearing Mick's voice. They provide a little kind of pause or relief and then he carries on the story.
How would you say his photography and videos impacted your art direction? Would you say you were trying to recreate his style in your own film in a way?
I wasn't trying to recreate his style, but we totally drew from his work. I was really drawn to the aesthetics he came from, which is like glam rock, Bowie, Lou Reed, Rocky Horror Picture Show... all those guys created this slightly dark but also very theatrical and slightly over the top imagery, which I wanted to infuse within the film.
At the same time, it's a film about a photographer and you want his work looking good. So yeah I did sit down with my cinematographer Max Goldman, and looked at a lot of his work. When we did what we called the "key interview," which was the interview of him in the studio where he's just sitting in the chair, Max set up a series of five looks, and within each of these looks he had a lighting board and he was just basically live-mixing the lighting throughout the interview. When Mick was talking about this certain subject, he would kind of keep it this way, and then half way through he would switch it into a slightly different look.
But all those looks were based on some of Mick's images, and when it came to coloring the film, we ended up doing the same thing where we'd always be referring back to Mick's images just to check that they were within the same scope of colors and feeling. This wasn't always easy, because half of the film is shot in 16mm, the other half was shot on the [RED] Alexa, and then all of Mick's stuff was either 35mm or medium-format stills. Getting consistency was really hard.
So, how did you go about organizing all these different materials?
I had the idea that this was going to be Mick's point of view, but that you do need other elements to break that up. Some days Mick would just come to the shoot and say, "Oh I've got recordings of me and Bowie and I got a recording of me and Lou," or, "Oh I've got some Super 8 footage of me and Syd Barrett on acid." He was a journalist at one point, and wrote pieces for Rolling Stone and various men's magazines from back in the day. The Bowie tape, funnily enough, is from a now-defunct adult men's magazine called Club International. He did a piece on Bowie and at that point they had already become friends, so Bowie is very free to talk to him. Then there was the Lou Reed tape. I don't really know what it was for. Reed was actually a really techie guy. He was really into his tech. He had a VCR from when they first came out. He had a video camera in the mid-70s, and also one of these early Sony Walkmen that recorded sound. I guess they were just playing around with that and recorded the conversation. It's like five in the morning, both of them pretty blitzed out of their head...
They're both very different, because Bowie's is very clean, he's at the time sober and talking in a very structured manner, whereas the sound quality for the Lou Reed tape was dreadful so we had to fiddle around with it to try and clean it up a bit. We went and listened to the tapes and after going through them a few times, pulled out the bits which felt most interesting and tried to figure out how to thread them through. They were almost like a bookmark throughout the film, a sort of textural bookmark. You figure out the themes and then just try and match them up to where the themes are highlighted in the movie. The hardest thing was where to stop, and I think a part of that was Mick. He was always very conscious about not abusing his friendships with these guys, and not overdoing it.
What do you hope people take away from this film?
I'm hoping that people get that I put a lot of effort in to trying to make it different, trying to tell this story in a more unusual way and, and appreciate that. I'd like it to be the kind a film people can sit down and get stoned to and really get in the zone with. You're in this weird space for so much of the film, this dark place with Mick next to this operating table, and there's these weird animations. It does kind of feel like you're in this bubble for the whole film that you come out of at the end. Rock documentaries all get lumped together in a way, but the treatment and presentation of this film is completely different. Its just important for me that people recognize that. Whether thats a good thing or a bad thing is up to the viewer to decide, I want to people to enjoy the historical musical side of it but also enjoy the way it was told.
