Does this really count as liveblogging if I’m queuing the posts up in advance? THE REAL QUESTIONS.
Anyway back to this nonsense.
I remembered watching romance movies with my mom, and our favorite saying was “shut up and kiss her already!” We’d both get frustrated when the hero or heroine wouldn’t do what was so obvious to the two of us, and as soon as a tense, romantic moment occurred, we’d both repeat our mantra. I could hear my mom’s humor-filled voice in my mind giving me the same advice: “Kells, shut up and kiss him already!”
Houck, Colleen. Tiger's Curse (Book 1 in the Tiger's Curse Series) (p. 306). Splinter. Kindle Edition.
I feel like perhaps this is the root of Kelsey’s problems, and I do not necessarily mean her mother?
Look I don’t know. I didn’t watch a lot of movies or TV growing up so maybe my viewpoint is skewed (I watched Scooby-Doo, the cooking/home renovation channel with my grandmother when I visited her in the summer(when they were still about DIY fixing stuff), and Star Trek. My dad lobbied successfully for Disney movies and my mom decided this meant I could watch Star Wars)(Look it was A Big Deal that I got to go see LotR when it released in theaters okay? I was 11 I think? I’d read the books so my mother figured it was probably fine)(in retrospect there are a lot of reasons I love those movies, and it’s not TOTALLY related to the quality)
MY POINT IS.
I think if you have a small girlchild and you watch romance movies with her as a child and her strongest memory is shouting at the screen ‘kiss her already!’ it’s probably indicative that she didn’t get many talks in the way of ‘it’s okay to not want to be kissed’ or ‘sometimes people don’t want to be kissed’ or ‘permission is important when kissing comes into play’. When girls (especially but not exclusively) are inundated with constant outside messages about our worth in and out of romantic relationships, and your inside messages are “let’s watch romantic movies and shout ‘kiss her already!’” I don’t think it’s any wonder Kelsey has some weird ideas about romance.
When I was growing up my parents read what I read, which isn’t to say they restricted my reading. On the contrary, they encouraged me to pick up adult novels if I wanted, and often read me to sleep with them. They read them so they could talk with me about what I read and what I thought about what I was reading.
(Also as a side note, all jokes about the dress aside, my clearest memory of watching the animated Disney Cinderella is my mother sitting with me afterwards and talking with me about why it was important to be able to take care of myself or have a fallback plan because too often women end up in situations like Cinderella’s with nowhere else to go)(she loved the Brandy Cinderella best for many reasons, but one of them was the fact that Cinderella was leaving at the end because she realized she could)
Sorry for the ramble. I think I mean this: romance is fun, and good for a lot of people, and oftentimes joyful, but that doesn’t mean it is or should be the be all and end all of our lives, and a lot of media sells it that way, especially (but not exclusively) to girls. I think this little vignette of Kelsey’s home life explains a lot.
Or I’m overthinking it. Up to you.

Toy Story 2
Tumblr media
Yeah yeah, I made a side blog for my liveblogs. I got nothing better to do right now. The pets are fed and watered, the chores are done, and I don't have to pick up my little sister till at least noon. So, without further ado, Toy Story 2!
I'm trying to stick to movies I haven’t seen in the past decade. Also, I remember this one had Kelsey Gramer so why not watch the movie with evil Blinky in it!

Transformers: Age of Extinction liveblog
What? No opening monologue from Optimus?
And they changed the title font. I don’t like change.
Awww dinosaurs! Dinosaurs and spaceships.
So that’s what happened to the dinosaurs...
And somehow we’ve skipped eons into the future without warning or explanation.
I feel like this woman should be wearing more for being in the Arctic. I don’t think she has enough layers.
A metal dinosaur. No context whatsoever.
And now we’re in Texas.
What kind of name is “Cade?” And I can already tell I’m not gonna like Lucas. Typical Michael Bay bro character.
Like he didn’t see that football coming from a mile away?
Why is there a truck filled with mortar shells in an old dilapidated theater?
Half dressed teenage girls. Another Michael Bay staple.
So humans are gonna act like the “Battle of Chicago” wasn’t 100% the humans’ fault? Y’all told Optimus to leave and he did just to show y’all what would happen then he came back and saved your asses. Ungrateful shitheads.
Wait? 5 years ago? This movie came out in 2014. Dark of the Moon took place in 2011. So technically this movie took place in the future (2016).
Yeah I really don’t like this Lucas guy.
Sassy black woman. Of course. Michael Bay loves his stereotypes.
They really about to kill Ratchet aren’t they?
Lockdown is scary.
They killed Ratchet. I already hate this movie. So there’s only 2 Autobots left from the original movie.
Of course Lockdown’s vehicle form would be an Aventador. Because what car personifies :harbinger of doom” like an Aventador?
Humans are boring.
Kelsey Grammar’s character sounds like a white supremacist. Only he’s preaching human supremacy.
Cue the sun.
Of course the old ugly truck is a transformer. And Optimus at that. Who didn’t see that coming?
“It’s the American thing to do.” Lucas is really annoying.
“I’ll kill you!” First words Optimus Prime, GOOD personified, says in this movie.
Awww Optimus is falling apart. 😢😢😢
Lockdown with the slick disses.
Spark = soul
Lucas squealed didn’t he?
Satan’s Lamborghini on the move.
Cue the sun.
Another shot of ppl getting out of the car from the ground up.
I don’t like Savoy either. He looks sweaty and douchey.
Yes, Tessa. Lucas called.
“HERE I AM!” Optimus to the rescue.
Another generic white boy. This one named Shane.
Seatbelts are important.
“This may be primarily my fault.” You think, Lucas?
I would much rather watch Optimus and Lockdown fight on the roof than this car chase.
Is Shane supposed to be Irish? I know the actor is Irish but his accent keeps going in and out.
I know Michael Bay enjoyed the explosion scene.
Oh Lucas died. Serves him right.
Every time Lockdown transforms into the Aventador is like a commercial.
Tessa, it is 100% Lucas’ fault that he is dead.
Romeo and Juliet law?
This whole scene is unnecessary. It adds nothing to the plot.
It bothers me that the truck Optimus scanned is not the truck he transforms into.
Bumblebee!!
Well technically Bumblebee is a kid, Drift. At least he is to Cybertronians.
Optimus vows to the kill the human responsible.
Stanley Tucci has no lips and it’s disturbing.
I don’t like all-black Bee.
Michael Bay actually reused a shot of Bumblebee’s radio from the FIRST Transformers movie.
Bumblebee says you can’t touch this 😂😂😂
Optimus is PISSED.
Bee back to being yellow!
How big are these hallways that Optimus can just run through them like he isn’t 35ft tall?
OMG this guy no-selling Hound and Crosshairs shooting up the place. A+ acting.
This pixel transforming shit is awful.
I just noticed that Drift can be a helicopter and a car.
Optimus and Bee playing pass the humans in slo-mo.
If Tessa don’t get her weak ass up off the ground... “HELP ME!” Bitch move!
Lockdown always move like he got all the time in the world.
He’s talking about knights and the creators. Huh?
“Let’s try to use violence as a last resort.” *is frightened by tentacle monster* “I’LL KILL YOU!” Drift is hilarious.
“Oh that’s festering ugliness.” John Goodman is the perfect voice for Hound.
Why does Shane keep talking shit? You have been USELESS. Shut up.
Transformer puppies. Vicious puppies.
Bumblebee with the save!
Drink Bud Light.
All that shit that just happened on his ship and Lockdown is completely oblivious to it.
Megatron playing ppl like fiddles from the grave.
Optimus is 1000% done with human bullshit.
Oh now Lockdown realizes his trophy case is gone.
Cade, Optimus has spent 3 movies tryna have faith in humans. He is OVER IT.
A juice box makes everything better.
That’s all it took to shoot a whole ship down?
Stanley Tucci got the designated F-bomb.
Ha! That football throw was foreshadowed.
“We’ll let Prime figure this one out.” 😂😂
“I was expecting a giant car.” 😂😂
How can Hound run out of guns?
Optimus riding Grimlock is everything.
Since when does Optimus call Bumblebee “Bee?”
“I hate cheap knockoffs.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
A giant magnet eating everything.
All he had to do was shoot it? Why didn’t you do that from jump?
How did Kelsey Grammar get here?
Wow. Optimus just straight up murdered a human. He did say he would kill the one responsible.
Optimus was doing a better job fighting Lockdown in his rusty state than he is here.
Wow. There was a whole human in the scene that shouldn’t have been there. What is this editing?
Teamwork makes the dream work.
“Honor to the end.” Optimus, you just stabbed a dude in the back.
Gee I hope Bumblebee wasn’t still there when he set off that grenade.
Galvatron slinks off into the night.
Cue the sun.
Oh now there’s a monologue.

Decoder (1984):
Weird projects speak in dreams
Mom says ‘this is just going to be shot like an ultravox music video’
It is
Ominous shot of the squad forming up in their fatigues only to reveal they’re cosplaying to go to the arcade
Future German FBI guy’s sallow skull-like face is pulling a lot of weight
H Burger Special Ops Squad
What is the meaning of the frog?
Great soundtrack
A real shot of me trying to play video games and making my character run into walls instead

Repo Man really just adds on the themes and motifs without much of a conclusion to what it brings up. Is the FBI’s alien experimentation meant to stand in for US violence against Latin Americans displaced by its interventionist policies? Is the ‘No commies or Christians’ meant to be an ironic juxtaposition of two ideologically opposed groups or an expression that communism is the closest a post-science society can come to belief in the unreal/supernatural? The movie plays with double meanings (Light’s blanks, the legal repo men and the illegal car thieves, the generic-labelled food being uninterpretable as anything, the white suburban punks pretending to rebel) and it’s also full of them.
The overarching message seems to be: the US government is a toxic force that has rendered the (southern) American continent a radioactive wasteland of unexplained disappearances, hitching a parasitic ride on the people who live in these places. But that doesn’t map cleanly on to the car because in the end, the radioactive alien ghost car is divine and only Miller and Otto can transcend their worldly concerns and hitch a ride to heaven. Yee haw

Repo Man’s use of background noise/props/posters/silent gags is a treat and a half. Whenever the sound fades out to foreground the action, you know it’s about to become the most relevant thing in the room

Monster (2023) is exactly as good as a movie as I could ever want a film to be. Maintains the tension without ever feeling sensational or unrealistic. None of the perspective flips is facile. There is no twist untwist, each character’s truth is told on its own rather than being a gotcha. It works as a thriller. The tension doesn’t feel manipulative, I was invested in it for the fun of figuring out what was happening. It’s an enjoyable watch as a mild quotidian psychological thriller-lite. It’s entertaining besides being worthy!
Even the ending cuts at the exact moment it should. The resolution to the story comes back in the echoes of it, you don’t see each loose end methodically tied off and choked. And then I saw Sakamoto Ryuichi’s name in the credits.

i’m not really an actor watcher by virtue of Not Watching Movies and also I didn’t like The Green Knight (7/10, 5/10 with that score at theatre volumes good god) but I am happy that Barry Keoghan played the role that he did in that movie

Finally Watched Spider-Verse. It’s a less tight movie than the first one but I loved it as much for it. It’s the most comicky thing I’ve watched. The first one was a good movie based on comics. This feels like reading a good comic. The soundtrack had fewer standouts compared to the first one, but the score got the chance for far more high points with the switching of genres between dimensions. A movie by people who love comics for people who love comics. And I love comics.

Due to confluence of events a spontaneous Les Mis 2012 movie night is happening. I’ve seen it twice or three times and felt entirely neutral on it every time. This phone-addled viewing is the one where I’ve just become a full-throated Jean Valjean fan
