Some concept sketches for a few of the other Mer in Link's new pod!
Gully = Kelp Greenling Osfala = Opah or Moonfish the Witch = Anglerfish Zelda = Eel/dragon Irene = Pinnate batfish (juvenile form) Seres = Blue Whale Rosso = Copper Rockfish
I tried to stick to mostly cold water fish. Link and Irene are roughly the same size, for scale. (Though Zelda should really be even bigger.)

Something I finished about a month ago but kept forgetting to post. A notebook with oil-tanned fish leather spine (specifically, from a male kelp greenling caught during last summer). It's technically a gift for my mother for Christmas, but then it ended up being, well, incredibly late and I had by then bought her another gift, so instead it's going to be a mother's day present... Which is still so far away.
The fish skin was definitely interesting to use and I had to play around with glues to see which would work the best for adhering the skin to the boards- in the end I used a wood glue for it. I also had chosen to use a very thin board for the cover, which had its own trials and tribulations, but in the end I'm quite pleased with it. I certainly hope to be incorporating more fish leather into more projects as I've got more fish leather and it is very cool and enjoyable to see them become part of a practical everyday object.

Silly Game Time: Welcome to the Randomocracy, a society where we assign people to be the caretakers of randomly selected animals!
First, use a random *letter* generator to get a letter. Second, use a random *number* generator to get a number between 1 and 10. Finally, look up "animals that start with [your letter]", and go down the list until you get to the option corresponding with your number. CONGRATULATIONS! You are now responsible for ensuring this animal's well-being? What is it (post a picture), and on a scale of 1 to 10, how much is this going to impact your life?
(I got E and 1, which means I'm now the proud guardian of an Elephant! This is kinda awesome ... but also gonna ruin me financially.)
Im very tired rn,so the # is >10 sorry

Tunicates and bryozoans were probably the first animals to attach themselves to Holly’s steel jacket in 1966. Next came the amphipods and barnacles. Within two years, barnacles, mussels, and sponges had overtaken the structure. A thick reef crust began to form—as thick as 10 centimeters in places—as more and more invertebrates fixed themselves to the growing artificial reef. Anemones and sea stars arrived. Rock scallops. Limpets and jingle shells. Crabs and more crabs. And because the structure itself casts long shadows in the water column, the way a kelp forest does, it attracted juvenile fish and other prey looking for somewhere to hide.
Each structure has its own type of life, says Bob Evans, when we spoke by phone. The Santa Barbara photographer began diving in the 1960s. Since then, he has logged more than 5,000 hours underwater, and more than 850 dives on Holly and other nearby Channel Island platforms. He and his fellow divers—often biologists surveying the wildlife beneath the platforms—were amazed by the diversity and size of wildlife they found there. In a single photograph, says Evans, he has counted more than 30 crabs. Mussels, in particular, grow unusually deep and large under Holly. Evans surmises that the larvae, which are usually found drifting in shallower waters, might have attached themselves to Holly’s steel legs when the structure first arrived in the Santa Barbara Channel, floating at the surface for several days before the engineers flipped the jacket and drove the legs into the pilings in the seafloor.
Below the jacket, mussel shells and other invertebrates accumulated on the seafloor, dislodged from the reef above by routine platform cleaning or heavy swells. (Oil companies typically “clean” the biofouling every six months or so from the top portion of the jacket.) The shell mounds that form below platforms can grow to several meters thick, creating more habitat for octopuses and shrimp, rock crabs and king crabs, and many, many fishes: rockfish, lingcod, poachers, painted greenling, and other benthic species. These mounds also carpet the mud and broken bits of rock brought up from below when the wells were first drilled. It is possible, say scientists, that toxicants could be released into the ocean if the shell mounds are disturbed or dismantled.

The Oregon Coast
Our next stop was to Corvallis, Oregon to meet up with Pearce’s college buddy Mike and his wife Katy. We swung by for a short visit to see their house before they put it on the market this weekend to be sold. Since they were having open houses and showing their house all weekend they got an AirBnB in Waldport as a getaway and graciously invited us to stay with them.
Tumblr media
So after seeing their completed renovations to their house we headed to the Oregon Coast for a weekend getaway. The house was beachfront and we had it all to ourselves! On Friday, everyone worked so I got to read, do some yoga, play with the dogs, and explore the beach on my own (no probllama!) It was a lazy day and everyone needed it! In the afternoon, Katy and Mike’s other friends arrived and we all sat around playing games, chatting and drinking cold ones!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saturday we took a nice beach walk in the morning. The pups loved running through the little pools on the beach. We got SO lucky with the weather! Everyone said it's usually cloudy and windy on the coast and we had the most beautiful warm clear blue sky days, it was awesome!! After our morning walk, we changed and headed into the town of Newport to Rogue Brewery. It's one of the largest breweries in the area with 3 separate locations. It was fun to sit by the harbor with a nice cold beer watching the fisherman prepare their fish. Nothing goes better with a harbor beer than fresh clam chowder. Next, we went to Mo’s Original Restaurant and had their clam chowder. It was very good but buuuuut I have had better. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to Mo’s but I'm glad we tried it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katy’s friends that joined us Friday night are Erin, another Hokie (VT for life!), and Ben an experienced fisherman who brought his boat to the coast. So with our bellies full Ben took me, Pearce, and Mike out on the boat to fish and see if we could make Pearce’s goal to catch a fish come true! An evening fish session!!
Tumblr media
Ben took us out to the jetti not far from where the ocean meets the bay. He set Pearce up with a reel and taught him how to jig. It's a very fitting name because you have to repeatedly drop your bait to the floor, then pull it up, and let it flutter down again spinning the bait to reflect light and lure in a fish. It really was a Jig and a style of fishing I have never seen but it worked! Ben caught three Kelp Greenlings jigging away while poor Pearce wasn't having any luck. It was getting dark so we decided it was about time to head back to the house when Pearce said he got his pole stuck again. Low and behold as Pearce reels it in there’s a fish on the hook. He did it! Pearce caught a fish and is now an official fisherman! I haven’t seen him smile that big and get that excited over something so small before! I was very proud of his accidental catch! His goal was met so we could head back with dinner!!
Tumblr media
We went home successful and happy having met Pearce’s goal to catch dinner! We even feasted on fresh fish tacos to celebrate! We could not have asked for a better weekend with friends!!
Also, Mike and Katy sold there house within 24 hours of listing it! The weekend truly was amazing!!!!

Sea otters saved again
The recovery of sea otter (Enyhdra lutris) populations near Canada’s Vancouver Island is a conservation success story – but coastal communities and fisheries are feeling the pinch as they must now compete with them for their favourite shellfish.
In the long-term, however, scientists have calculated that the otters’ impact on ecosystems could bring substantially greater financial rewards, offering a modelling framework to evaluate long-term ecological changes driven by such apex predators.
They report in the journal Science that benefits of sea otter recovery – healthier kelp forests, greater carbon storage, higher fish catches and ecotourism – could exceed more than C$50 million per year if managed well.
This could outweigh the losses to crab, clam and urchin fisheries by as much as $46 million annually despite their short-term pain, says lead author Edward Gregr from the University of British Columbia.
The good news will hopefully save the otters yet again.
“Since their re-introduction to parts of the Pacific Northwest in the early 1970s, sea otter populations have been expanding at a rate as high as 18% a year,” Gregr says.
“Over the years, this has led to increasing economic impacts for coastal invertebrate fisheries … and increasing animosity from fishers. Otters were starting to be called rats of the sea, and there was likely no small amount of illegal killing to keep them away from lucrative fishing grounds.”
Credit: James Thompson
The researchers recognised an opportunity to conduct a natural experiment and compare ecosystems with and without the endearing marine mammals, which had been hunted to near extinction for their fur.
They combined field work, trophic dynamics and economic data in a social-economic model and predicted the value of the four diverse ecosystem services with otter populations at full capacity – estimated at 5000 critters – or no otters.
Results showed that sea otters could generate 37% greater ecosystem biomass per year through recovered kelp forests, which sea urchins had virtually mowed down.
Restored habitat for finfish, such as rockfish, greenlings and salmon, would increase their value by $9.4 million. Increased carbon sequestration – which reduces ocean acidification – was valued at $2.2 million and ecotourism by $42 million.
This well exceeds the $7.3 million loss predicted through loss of geoduck clam, crab and urchin fisheries, which could be compensated by the gains. The researchers suggest this loss could also, to some degree, be mitigated in other ways.
For instance, highly valued seafood such as geoduck clam and Dungeness crab could attract higher prices as supply outpaces demand. The crabs also have habitats beyond the reach of otters, so could be sourced in deeper waters.
The model’s estimates don’t factor in broader benefits of kelp forests for biodiversity and ecosystem resilience, and other species that could help fisheries diversify.
While the study doesn’t offer solutions, it does provide a framework for stakeholders to manage otter conservation with everyone’s interests at heart.
“The immediate value of the results could contribute to broadening the understanding of fishers, communities and managers about the range of changes,” says Gregr. “It’s not just otters vs shellfish.”
Noting that costs and benefits will be shared unequally among established commercial activities and will cause inequities between communities and cultures, he hopes their integrated model will improve mutual understanding.
In the longer term, the model is “transformational”, according to a related commentary by James Estes and Lilian Carswell from the University of California, US, with the framework it offers for evaluating costs and benefits of apex predators on other ecosystems, a common source of confusion and conflict.
“The analysis by Gregre et al. should spark a new era of ecological-economic research that can be used by natural resource policy-makers and managers to make and defend more rational, equitable and far-sighted decisions affecting predators.”
