What the fuck... I never even noticed that, but it's right there in the words themselves...

Since expat (short for expatriate) literally means "a thing characterized by (-ate suffix) leaving (ex- prefix) the homeland (patria i.e. fatherland)."

But an immigrant is "a subject/agent (-ant suffix) of enacting (im- prefix) movement (migratus i.e. Latin for "move or change")."

So, for an expatriate, they're defined by their Western/Northern country and the fact that they left it. An immigrant is defined by the Western/Northern country, and the fact that they went there. I don't think I can spell it out any clearer than that.

This post blew my mind, man...

the dichotomy between the "immigrant" (someone from the global south who moves to the north) and the "expat" (someone from the global north who moves to the south) makes me feel fucking crazy. a white person who moves to asia is an expat but an asian who moves to the west is an immigrant. & how those terms are politicized and assigned class statuses, like the word "immigrant" tends to imply a blue collar worker (even if that isn't the case) while "expat" implies a white collar worker. the associations with "expat neighbourhoods" in asian countries is very very different from those of "immigrant neighbourhoods" in western nations. also how "immigrants" who dont assimilate are seen as "failing" and bad, lower class, a burden on society, etc. whereas "expats" not assimilating into local culture is expected and viewed as a sign of their higher status. the double standards are so insane

Do you realize what it means when you're suicidal? It means that nothing in your life matters. If that is true, then you can do anything you want, consequences be damned. Watch Dogs and Games About Nothing.

This was a great video, from a great channel. It does get a little heavy, discussing systemic issues, racialized inequality, the exploitation of children, vigilantism and violence.

But, it's well worth watching.

Cai's Home for Aspiring Vampires is a criminally underviewed channel, and I'm sharing this in ths hopes that more people can find it.

Also, I think Cai is nonbinary, and they discuss LGBTQ issues, so if you're interested in that subject matter, maybe become a subscriber?

The general store has been rejuvenated, so you can see how most people shopped back in the day. It's interesting that shops then are more akin to a convenience store now - if it was all behind the counter, instead of on racks.

There's also an illustration and a cute pig doll... not gonna lie, these probably weren't from the museum, but rather the op shop across the street, but they look kinda vintage-y right?
