Sanctuary:Reimagining Community Safety
This was my video application for the 2017 Create Change Fellowship at The Laundromat Project. I got accepted into this 6 month fellowship back in April and our culminating project is happening this Saturday September 16th at Kelly Street Garden in the Longwood neighborhood in the Bronx. When I first started this fellowship, I knew that this experience would strengthen my connection to the Bronx arts community and that I would meet incredible artists and collaborators who are invested in creating art in service of social justice. 5 months into this fellowship, I can definitely say that this is true. Alethea Pace, Emilio Martinez-Poppe, Ahmed Tijay Mohammed and Nikomeh Anderson are my Laundromat Project Fellow collaborators and together we worked on a scarecrow making project with children artists: Hugo, Deion, London, Isaiah, Jayniya, Lyehana, who live on the Kelly Street block and help out in the Kelly Street Garden. The scarecrows will not only serve as a functional element to protecting the harvest of the garden, but also as symbols of how community members protect and look out for each other to create sanctuary. This Saturday Sept 16 from 2pm-4pm we are holding a people of color only story circle at the Kelly Street Garden Community Space to share stories about what sanctuary means for children and families who live and share space on Kelly St.
Thank you to HYDE Leadership Charter School and Kelly Street Garden for being our community partners in this endeavors.

With Rosalba Lopez Ramirez at Kelly Street Garden- an explosion of possibilities, fresh food, and love if resources are allocated with foresight and respect. Did I mention this garden was in the South Bronx and I’m in the back of 3 residential apartment buildings?
