Why the X-Men: Dark Phoenix Uniforms Are Atrocious

I really can’t get over just how BAD Dark Phoenix messed up the uniforms. It’s just one of those things that in contemporary superhero movies, one think about. One would think the directors, the customer designers, the producers would put in effort because superhero costumes/uniforms are one of those things one should not skimp on in a big budget Hollywood blockbuster. Dark Phoenix had a budget of 200 million USD, five million less than DOFP; I don’t where all that money went, but clearly it didn’t go to the uniforms. But then again Simon Kinberg in his infinite wisdom, who shouldn’t have touched another X-Men without adults in the room with him, hired Emmy award winning costume designer Daniel Orlandi, who two years before worked on Logan. But whatever the instructions were didn’t work and stood out in a fairly grounded movie aesthetically. I least give Apocalypse credit, all the costumes seemed coherent, functional and pleasing to the eye; you can read a lot into the character just by how they are dressed and present themselves. 

But Oh my God! Do theses uniform look awful and ugly! I don’t know how on earth theses uniforms got through a spot check and testing. Seriously WTF costume department! Seriously! 200 million dollars went into this movie. 200 million dollars!!  

OK! What wrong with theses uniforms. (Sharp breath out). It boils down to a couple of things: they are all the same, the design is too simple, and the functionality. 

Hey what about the black armor flight suits used in X-Men: Apocalypse? Why aren’t you complaining about that? They are all the same. 

Oh yes! How can I forget. Yes, they are the same, but in the movie, theses are not the X-Men’s designs. They are in fact a product of the military and Stryker. Theses uniforms were designed by a military organization that care for function and aesthetics. Unlike the Dark Phoenix uniforms they actually look like armor and look like they would protect the user; sure they may not be personalized, but it is armor none the less.  

Now getting back the Dark Phoenix’s uniforms. I think the one number reason why they don’t work is that Daniel Orlandi designed it on paper. And on paper it looked great, but in 3D and on the human body it doesn’t work. Why doesn’t not work? Well for one, it broadens all the actors shoulders too much, the eye goes to the actor’s chest and not to the actor’s face. X marks the spot, so the eye goes to it in the frame. The uniform is overstating the actor or actress; it doesn’t work with them, it works against them. The yellow is too bright and its corny and it doesn’t fit in the tone of the movie. They are distracting from the action

I’m just going to say it, theses uniforms do not look good on any of the actors. None of them can pull it off. Adding insult to injurie these uniforms look CHEAP! and because how cheap they look it breaks the suspicion of disbelief. One thing that I don’t tolerate in movies is making the characters stupid for the sake of the plot. The X-Men, more specifically Hank McCoy looks like a dumbass for not designing uniform armor for the team. The uniforms don’t even look like they can handle extreme g-force, let alone bullets or shrapnel, energy blasts etc. They look like they are made from the same material that cheer uniforms are made of, cheap double-knit polyester. I give credit at least on cheer uniforms they’re aesthetically pleasing compared to the X-Men uniforms and most schools work the a budget of ham sandwich. Oh yeah, 200 million dollars went into this movie. How on Earth do these uniforms look cheap?  

 It’s one thing to be set in the 60s and say the uniforms are bullet proof, when bulletproofing wasn’t that great and effective at stopping  7.62mm rounds at point-blank range; it wasn’t until Keliver came around that it made bulletproofing effective in 1971. So YEAH, I can excuse First Class, but what THIS movies EXCUSE? It’s set in the 90s. You know what? It can save people from IMPALEMENT? (LINK) Didn’t that happen to Raven??? Clearly, Hank McCoy is genius! 

Now don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t have mind if Dark Phoenix updated the uniforms to suggest time has passed. Perhaps switch Jean Grays to her original green phoenix uniform. Since its the 90s why not harken back to Ororo’s white uniform from the X-Men: Animated series. Fans would’ve liked that!  

We can’t have that, that would be actually awesome! 

Now we have to compare how better live-action X-Men movies did their uniforms to truly comprehend just how badly Dark Phoenix screwed up.  Now, one has to ask what makes for a good team superhero uniforms? Form and function, team symbol, personalization/differentiation. Now, this doesn’t apply to every superhero team and not every principle needs to be followed in order to create a good team uniform.

First Class 

Now, what makes First Class work and not Dark Phoenix for one instead of the uniforms being made out of one type of fabric, in the First Class case the uniforms have different fabrics; the navy is a bit more leathery. Second, they have unified colored scheme, but the straps are also unifying the outfits together. On the flip side, they are not all the same; for Charles and Erik yes on first glance they seem pretty similar, but Erik has a blue collar; Raven yellow stripes down her midarm; Alex has his disc and Sean has flaps so he can fly. In addition, it actually looks like the uniforms can protect them. You know what the yellow actually goes with the aesthetics of the movie because First Class has this 60s Bond feel. 

DOFP

One thing that I really enjoy about DOFP with the original cast is that not only their uniforms affected by their environment and a bit more futuristic touches to them. But show how much characters like Bobby, Kitty, and Rogue have evolved and matured since Last Stand. and its reflects in their appearance. I highly getting the Rouge Cut, its the best version of this movie and fixes a few plot holes. If anything its a passionate love letter to the fans and not 

One of the nice touches is Erik’s armor and its not his maroon Magneto armor, there are many fans have pointed out that he is isn’t wearing his helmet, he trusts Charles and lets him into his head. But I want to point out just how similar their armor is. There is no philosophical differences between them now; unlike their previous outfits for Charles its his conservative three piece suit, that in all three movies he has worn and never worn armor until now, peaceful he is not. 

X-Men 

For the original as much as I don’t enjoy the 2000s black leather superhero style, it does have its place. Though I do feel bad more the actors, being in leather and hot weather and doing stunt work probably gets very hot. Having that slim individualized color for each teammate makes the X stand out, though there patterns are not all the same; despite it being black. I do prefer this to the Dark Phoenix because they do look like badass and it looks like it can protect them from damage. 

Apocalypse  

I’m like Why can’t we have nice things? And keep them? Seriously? Theses uniforms were great! Why not use them? You can upgrade them or switch them due to the time laps in between movies. 

And coming off from this movie. Yeah, its all the more oblivious just how much the Dark Phoenix’s X-uniform suck. I give credit, where credit is due, Apocalypse had great costume and wardrobe and finally gave Erik a Magneto costume that didn’t look ridiculous. And its not just Apocalypse, but First Class and DOFP had phenomenal costume, practical affects, and a good story to boot (Apocalypse was lacking in that area, but at least compared to Dark Phoenix it was unified and coherent. They had the money to make the X-Uniforms work, but they didn’t and that’s all the more disappointing and more ill against the movie. 

They had 200 million dollars and their uniforms still look like shit.

Northern Eingard is very different from southern Eingard. The north is much more heavily populated than the south, and during the wars it was the home of the Traditionals. The Traditionals have been flushed out, but most nobles still live up there, and of course, it’s where the palace is.

Acamen city is in the north, as well as Icamet, Madarlon, Kaldell manor, Larala, Amina’s house, and the the international port to Orenda.

The south has more trees, but the north is cold and more dry. There are not as many trees. The north part of the Keliv road is surrounded by cliffs and dry rock. The north always gets heavy snow, while the south has an off chance of getting light snow. Most of the series takes place in the north.

Worldbuilding: The Capital City of Eingard

The Capital City of Eingard is located on the northern Eingardian coast, where the Xane mountain range ends, as does the Keliv route. It is Eingard’s largest city, with two ports, one international and the other civilian.

A set of guarded gates lead the way into the city. The east side of the city is protected by a forest, the west by the same.

Just beyond the gates are the markets, where merchants sell food and weapons and goods of all kinds. Beside them are the taverns and inns. The residential sects sit on the west side of the city, where people live in little single story houses.

At the back of the city is the most impressive part of the capital. the royal palace. It is home to the royal party and an assortment of nobles who either live there permanently or stay as guests on business. Two towers reach into the heavens on either side of the palace, both occupied by the king. Otherwise the pale palace is a single story, but massive.

Like the Capital, the palace plays such a huge part of this series that I think it will get its own detailed post, so look out for that.

The palace has gardens on the west and east sides, the latter leading out into the soldiers’ training yard, which leads out onto the docks and the sea.

The Keliv route, the Xane range, and the ports and the palace of the capital city are all memorable locations that most Eingardians know of, if they haven’t visited them.

In Orenda, the four oracle sites are the well known landmarks. On Easthaven, it’s the prison, the beaches, the rocks, and the governor’s manor.

Definitely magic, castles and soldiers in shining armor and swords are things that would shock us!
