Drule Character Bios
I’ve discussed the Drules as a people on this blog before but haven’t talk about the individual characters very much besides Hazar and Dorma. Therefore I’ve written some brief biographies about some of the Drules in the Vehicle Voltron season of Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Keep in mind this is not a complete list of all the Drule characters. There are A LOT of them, so I’ve narrowed it down to the ones who either played a major role in the series or who I personally found memorable. I might add more characters to this list later but for now I think I’ve covered most of the notable Drules.
Name: Emperor Zeppo
Dairugger Name: Emperor Corsair
About: A greedy, power hungry schemer. He manages to avoid capture by promising Hazar he’ll give up his war making ways if the rebels let him go. However, upon escape he makes for planet Dema where he’s secretly building up a new army to resume his conquests.
Episode to shine: Zeppo’s role isn’t nearly as large as you’d think. He doesn’t get much screen time until late in the series.
Name: Grand Viceroy Throk
Dairugger Name: Supreme Commander Al Caponero
About: Throk is one of the most power hungry, prideful, and outspoken members of the Supreme Council. He’s vocally opposed any sort of cooperation with the Galaxy Alliance, seeing them as invaders out to steal planets that rightly belong to the Drule Empire. Not only that, but sees making peace with the Alliance as an insult to the Drule’s honor, something he ties strongly to their military might and conquests, and pride. He absolutely hates Hazar for his attempts at peacemaking and, it’s implied, is jealous of Hazar’s power. At one point Throk imprisons Hazar in his palace.
At the end of Vehicle Voltron he and a few other members of the council flee planet Drule and presumably joins Emperor Zeppo on planet Dema.
Episode to shine: Plays a major role in many episodes, but if I had to pick one I’d go with “It’s Anybody’s World.”
Name: Commander Hazar
Dairugger Name: Commander Socrat Teles
About: Is one of the highest ranking officers in the Drule chain of command at the start of the series. While he original hates the Alliance and wants the Drule Empire to dominate the galaxy, he gradually realizes the war is only further endangering his people by wasting time and resources. When he starts reaching to the Alliance in hopes making peace, the Drule command turns against him, leading to his exile and eventual imprisonment. At the end of Vehicle Voltron he leads the rebels in overthrowing Emperor Zeppo.
Episodes to shine: Plays a major role in most episodes.
Name: Captain Twila
Dairugger name: Captain Emma
About: Captain Twila is one of the Drule’s top scientist and the only female Drule officer in the series. She is stubborn, prideful, loyal, and determined to prove her worth as a military officer by any means necessary. At one point she’s injured and taken aboard the S.S. Explorer for treatment. Commander Hawkins attempts convince her to join him and help bring peace between the Alliance and Drules, but Twila doesn’t buy it. She escapes and, more determined than ever to prove her worth, almost gets herself killed trying to destroy Voltron and the Explorer.
Episode to shine: “This World’s For the Birds”
Name: Dorma
Dairugger Name: Sirk
About: A brave and passionate woman dedicated to liberating her people from the rule of the Supreme Council and bringing peace between the Drules and the Alliance. She also deeply loves and admires her brother Hazar. She was once a member of the Supreme Council but, unfortunately, the we never learn why she left the council. After repeatedly trying to convince Hazar to led a rebellion against the Empire to no avail, she ends up joining the Underground Rebel Forces (URF) herself.
Episode to shine: “Color Me Invisible”
Name: Chancellor Mozak
Dairugger Name: Home Secretary Socrat Tes
About: Mozak is Hazar and Dorma’s loving father. Wise, humble, and trustworthy, he’s also one of the very few Supreme Council members not blinded by paranoia or a lust for power. Because of this he’s ignored and undermined by his follow council members. Late in the series Dorma convinces him to assist the URF by pleading their case to the council.
Episode to shine: “Hazar is Demoted”
Name: Marshall Keezor
Dairugger Name: Commander Al Luciano
About: A scheming, nasty, underhanded weasel of a man with an annoying nasally voice. He’s a high ranking member of the Supreme Council and a continual thorn in the side of both Hazar and the Galaxy Alliance. He’s also notable for his brief but significant role in the first Lion Voltron season where he orchestrates the coup to overthrow Zarkon and place Lotor on the throne of planet Doom.
Episode to shine: “A Man Made Sun”
Name: Captain Mongo
Dairugger Name: Captain Drake
About: Honorable, proud, and dependable, Mongo is one of the first Drules to open up to the idea of peace with the Alliance. He’s also Hazar’s best friend and remains loyal to him even after most of the Drule leadership turns against him. About mid-way through the series he goes into self-imposed exile after losing to the Alliance forces.
Episode to shine: “Hazar on the Carpet”
Name: Captain Nerok
Dairugger Name: Captain Lafitte
About: One of the most underhanded, nasty, deadly, and destructive Drule officers. He’s a backstabbing sycophant who’ll do just about anything for power. Seriously, no blow is too low for this guy. His only loyalty is to himself.
Episode to shine: “Nerok Scores Big”
Name: Bakki
Dairugger Name: Bakke
About: Bakki is the leader of the Underground Rebel Forces, which seeks to overthrow Emperor Zeppo and the Supreme Council. He’s deeply concerned for the happiness and well-being for his people, which is his driving motivation. Late in the series he convinces Dorma to join the URF and helps break Hazar out of prison.
Episode to shine: “Color Me Invisible”
Name: Captain Brack
Dairugger Name: Captain Barataria
About: Another paranoid and ambitious Drule officer who believes the Galaxy Alliance is a rival empire out to conquer the universe. He views himself as a patriot and at one point leads an unsuccessful mutiny against Hazar. His fate after the failed revolt is unclear.
Episode to shine: “Who’s On First”
Name: Sandu
Dairugger Name: Sim
About: Trained to be soldier since he was a child, Sandu is a young but loyal subject of the Drule Empire. However, after being injured and taken aboard the Explorer for treatment, Commander Hawkins convinces him the Alliance only desires peace. He could have served as a bridge between the two sides if the Drule command hadn’t labeled him a traitor.
Episode to shine: Only appeared in one episode: “A Temporary Truce”
Name: Lieutenant Antor
Dairugger Name: Captain Antonov
About: A young officer who was in charge of a major Drule supply base until it was captured by the Alliance. He warms up to the Alliance thanks to the kind treatment his men receive after being taken prisoner and their subsequent abandonment by the Drule command.
Episode to shine: Only appears in “That’s the Old Ball Game”

Based on his association with pseudo-Western/classical art and what little we’ve seen of his personal fashion sense (i.e. the golden bathrobe), I feel like Hazar is either a ~cultured academic~ with very strong opinions on fine art or a shameless lover of alien kitsch who would totally drink from the Drule equivalent of the tacky “My House, My Rules, My Coffee” mug from Knives Out
#Vehicle Voltron#Hazar#voltron#Voltron: Defender of the Universe#DotU#45% of diplomatic communications post-canon are either Hazar dispassionately explaining why he thinks automatic drip painting isn't real art#or Dorma trying to steer the VV Force anthropologists away from using her brother's knick-knacks as a reference for Drule cultural heritage#Kumari comments#Kumari abuses the tagging system#Imagine if the gold standard of a cultured Drule man was like …………… Keezor#(idk he's got that Lorenzo de Medici chin)#Hazar is so reticent that I feel like he's on some post-post-irony Gen Z galaxy brain shit that none of his conformist peers understand#but his tastes /seem/ very conventional because we're viewing his collection with Western human eyes#at any rate he'd be a great pen pal

How would you update the Vehicle Voltron characters if there was ever a VLD style reboot of that series?
Hi Anon, thank you for the Ask!
I’ve got a few versions of this question sitting in my drafts, so I’m going to side-step and answer this in terms of general visual and writing style rather than any specific characters (which would be informed by this).
The first thing is that I would not do a VLD style reboot of Vehicle Voltron.
This is because quite a few things separate Vehicle Voltron from Lion Voltron most importantly the following:
Setting: Vehicle Voltron takes place in a galaxy. There is not a ‘home planet’ for the story’s setting (other than the planets from which the characters hail). Like Star Trek, the characters are constantly in motion as they explore the galaxy looking for a new hospitable planet to ease problems with over-crowding. Technically this is true of VLD, but only a few planets are visited in any meaningful way compared to how that is handled in Vehicle Voltron.
Very large cast of antagonists and protagonists: This is consistent with the space opera genre and requires a specific kind of story-telling and writing. It’s not for everyone. The large cast lends more realism to the setting and the story. Vehicle Voltron team is one part of a Galaxy Alliance fleet, they have support crew and commanders.
Larger age range and social/political/military roles: characters range in age from teens to young adults to middle aged adults to old age. This is another facet of the realism that balances the story. The commanders in charge (such as Hawkins) are not teens nor young adults. They have experience and wisdom. This sets up believable chains of command and obstacles for the protagonists at different layers of the story. Jeff, Cliff, and Krik may lead the teams that make up Vehicle Voltron but they still have to answer to Commander Hawkins and Captain Newley. And while Hawkins and Newley may command the S.S. Explorer, but they are still beholden to orders from the much older admirals from the Galaxy Garrison. The same goes for the antagonists, where Hazar may be a commander with his own ships and soldiers, but Marshal Keezor, Viceroy Throk, and even subordinate captains are obstacles to his ideas for peace with the humans.
Thus, I would instead look to the remakes of The Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Space Battleship Yamato to inform remake of Vehicle Voltron (note: remake does not equal reboot, I’m done with reboots).
Especially for the visual style of Yamato (above) as Nobuteru Yuki’s character designs are fantastic and rarely suffer from ’same face’ syndrome and go beyond a handful of body types.
Both of these stories are space operas with large casts featuring a wide range of age and rank, and Yamato has several different alien species represented in the story amongst both protagonists and antagonists (though they are the ‘humanoid’ type so monster-lovers would be let down).
Both LotGH and Yamato utilize a diversity of ages and ranks to great effect. It makes their stories richer and deeper. This is something that I would very much want to see preserved and expanded in a remake of Vehicle Voltron.
Yamato also handles ‘weird sci-fi scenarios’ and far-fetched technology pretty damn well. I don’t otherwise know how to describe the story in the Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark film, but it’s top notch science-fiction that would work in both Star Trek and Vehicle Voltron.
Likewise, the political maneuvering and philosophy that drives the plot in LotGH would be right at home in Star Trek and Vehicle Voltron. Having a large cast is crucial to that.
That Star Trek comparison is important, because the biggest difference between Vehicle Voltron and Lion Voltron can be summed up as: “Star Trek vs Star Wars.” Star Trek and Star Wars are superficially similar to the casual viewer, but they are very different kinds of story requiring different writing styles and direction.
So, the challenge in either a remake or reboot lies in how to balance the genre conventions of a space opera with a Super Robot Combining Mecha thrown in. It doesn’t matter if the robot has 3 pilots or 15, there is a mismatch between super robots and space opera. As biased as I am towards loving Vehicle Voltron (and its source anime, Dairugger XV), it’s a hard sell and harder to write well.
The biggest changes would probably require less super robot fights (thus changing the monster-of-the-week format), and less episodes overall since we are in the age of ‘short seasons’. Once those two things happen, the story is dangerously close to falling apart. This brings me back to LotGH and Yamato, as it would take serious writing skills and experience to pull this off and be a success. And that experience (with both mecha and space opera genres) may as well be non-existent in the West. That doesn’t mean that Western animation writers/directors/creative team/etc don’t have talent (they obviously do), it’s just that this kind of story isn’t one that is common in live action, let alone animation. I’ll be the elitist that wants writers with a mecha and space opera background writing a VV remake.
This brings me back to the part about the characters:
I don’t see much need to drastically change character arcs or personalities in a remake, except where its a matter of updating for the times, and removing things that are best left in the 80s. However, I would definitely do what VLD and Yamato and LotGH have done with changing genders and ethnicities, and I would preserve Vehicle Voltron’s large cast in order to maintain the age range and social/political/military roles.
Vehicle Voltron already had more ethnicity and gender representation than Lion Voltron (for its time), but I would take that farther. That is something that is important to me for a lot media. One of the great things about having a very large cast, is that it provides more breathing room for inclusion.
While that means that not every character gets a large role (Do they really need one to tell a story? Not in space opera they don’t.), it also means that a careful writer is less likely to end up in a situation where there is only one example of a character with particular sets of under-represented traits combined with narrative choices that seem like a good idea but could be hurtful to an audience for reasons outside of the story (e.g. the only black character is also the only racist, or the multi-minority LGBT character is the only one to perpetually go through hell, etc).
In other words, there are fertile fields for multiple kinds of representation in Vehicle Voltron with its 15 pilots, dozens of S.S. Explorer crew members, dozens of other Galaxy Alliance personnel, other fleets that appear, and among the antagonists as well. I would add another species to co-exist with the Drule, and expand upon the two species represented in the Galaxy Garrison (Krik and Cinda’s people, and Wolo and Tagor’s people). I would not rely on aliens for ethnicity representation (that’s a cheat), but age, gender, ability, and LGBT inclusion would certainly fit.
Like Star Trek, the space and future setting of Vehicle Voltron allows for diversity without present day concerns, but that does not mean that the writing should avoid those concerns and how they intersect with identity and representation. Viewers are living those concerns and are likely not watching a space opera set in the future with giant robots to be reminded of them (intentionally or accidentally).
I have other ideas that are specifically for the characters, but that will have to wait for another day.

Episode 27: Save the Space Station
Previous Episode: 26 The Planet Trap
Episode Master List
Let’s Compare Voltrons
I think they’re 0-3 on Space Stations saved at this point.
Chip bugs Jeff about boredom while they’re cruising in the strato-fighter.
The Explorer and its fleet are still water-bound and hung up for repairs. Krik has a bad feeling and Hawkins accepts it’s standing. A support fleet is on delay and a Drule base is nearby.
Nerok is ready to attack an Alliance Space Base and thinks up a brilliant new idea for his Robeast. Well, a grunt says attack the power supply and Nerok agrees.
Commander Steele is apparently in charge and gets the base ready. Robot fighters are launched, security is ready and base guns are online.
A network of Drule scout satellites ping the Alliance ships for accurate firing points. Steele’s fleet wipes them out but they’re online long enough to let the Drule ships commence accurate fire and start the battle strong.
Keezore calls Nerok and idiot, but a loyal idiot, then commands... Zabar. Ok, this isn’t Zabar at all, this guy is blonde with a completely different hairstyle and build. It might be a different-named guy, but he has the same faux-Lotor voice acting. Anyway, Keezore orders Fake-Zabar to attack the planet and cut off any reinforcements. So is this Earth or did Steele teleport to the Explorer?
Air Team are disheartened by not being close enough to assist Space Base. They split up for patrol.
Steele announces their ships are being overwhelmed so the station has to repel boarders. Nerok orders out the Robeast which penetrates the front guard. Steele orders robot stingray fighters out to intercept. The fighting gets close enough to start damaging station defenses despite the stingrays taking out some laser ships.
The station’s magna laser comes online and blows apart the Drule fleet, but the Robeast closes in and wipes out waves of fighters. Steele refocuses the station’s weapons on the Robeast, but it’s too lanky to get hit. It destroys the magna laser and Nerok’s remaining fleet moves in.
The Explorer’s ready to launch and it recalls the Voltron Force. The Space Station is apparently protecting them and Hawkins gives the go-ahead to launch to help.
Voltron Formation Rallying Cry:
Go Voltron Force!: 3
Go Voltron!: 10
Let’s Go Voltron Force!: 3
Voltron Formed: 26
Voltron leads the Explorer fleet and Jeff goes on a peace rant.
The space station has multiple magna laser’s but the next one still can’t hit the Robeast as it continues its carnage. It shoots its way into a hanger, which has unlaunched ships for some reason. Security try and RPG it out, but it’s a giant robot, they can’t do much even if the effort is appreciated.
It continues its rampage towards the power core. The station locks itself down to stop it but it just blasts through floors and walls. Some security tries to laser it but that’s even less effective.
The Robeast knocks the station unto backup power. The station’s actual Captain suggests a risky operation with the reactor to blast the Robeast out and Steele gives authorization.
The reactor team overrides the safety protocols with a VHS tape and evacuate.
The Explorer Fleet closes in...
Nerok gloats over his oncoming victory. He calls in to demand surrender. Steele refuses and Nerok gloats some more.
The Robeast breaks into the power room and pauses in front of the overloading reactor. The tech crew vents the nuclear steam and destroy the Robeast but not before it shoots the control room killing them—and they get away scot free.
The explosion continues out and actually damages Nerok’s ship because he flew too close like the idiot he is. The station opens up with its chaser rockets (those are called missiles) and blow him up. But wouldn’t you know it he escaped on his escape pods.
The rest of the station’s arsenal destroys the remaining Drule fleet to the cheers of its crew.
Drule Empire’s Wall of Failure:
Quark: 3
Hazar: 1
Mongol: 3
Rogar: 1
Zabar: 2
Nerok: 7
Brak: 3
Gorvann: 1
But Nerok launched a second Robeast before he escaped and Voltron’s flying through an asteroid field to find it.
The mole robeast emerges from an asteroid and shoots Voltron down, but the defender narrowly avoids crashing. It attacks the Robeast with a full barrage to little effect and it digs back underasteroid.
It emerges from behind and tackles Voltron into the asteroid and starts shocking the head. Voltron flips it off, destroys its weapons, then BLAZING SWORDs it.
Blah blah peace narration over the destroyed state of the space station.
The Force relaxes in the lounge and Hawkins congratulates them in person. Then blah blah NEW WORLDs, blah blah, Drules, blah blah episode end.

Oh yeah for those of you who don't know, Zarkon wasn't the head of the Empire in DotU. He was just one king out of who knows how many. Just a lil bit of info

The Coup
I’ve mentioned in previous posts how the Drule Supreme Council from the Vehicle Voltron series backed a coup to overthrow Zarkon and place Lotor on the throne of Planet Doom. These events take place in the episode “Zarkon Becomes a Robeast.” The episode begins with Zarkon ordering Lotor’s imprisonment, stating that their laws demand all those who lose in battle be punished. Haggar points that the many worlds Lotor conquered might revolt if their conqueror is simply thrown in prison, so she suggests inviting the leaders of said worlds to the prince’s court marshal so they can see how fair Zarkon is and swear allegiance to him. And with that Lotor is locked up while Zarkon heads to Arus to conquer it personally.
The Supreme Council is shocked by the news of Lotor’s imprisonment and, at first, many members wonder if it’s true. Marshal Keezor, one of the highest ranking members of the council, arrives to confirm this turn of events.
Keezor: “Yes it’s true that King Zarkon has removed Prince Lotor from command of his forces and placed him prison. And it may be for the best. Lotor has failed time after time to capture minor planets and bring them into the Drule Empire. Now Zarkon is taking over and if he can do no better, it may be time to dispose of him as well.”
So it seems Keezor isn’t exactly a fan of either Zarkon or Lotor. However, after Zarkon is defeated by Voltron, he changes his mind about Lotor and it’s by his command Lotor is freed.
Captain Nerok: “I’m afraid I bring you very bad news from Planet Doom.”
Keezor: “Bah! Nerok, when have we ever had good news from that planet?!”
Nerok: “Zarkon has lost.” Keezor: “I feared as much. And he tried to blame his son, Prince Lotor, on all their miserable failures.”
Nerok: “Huh?”
Keezor: “Well, Zarkon has had his chance and I now believe it’s because of him Lotor didn’t do better. Well, we’ll correct that. Have our agents on Planet Doom secure Lotor’s release. And when Zarkon returns, tell Lotor he must punish him in any manner that may amuse him.”
Mogor, the Doomite fleet commander, busts Lotor out of the slammer. When Zarkon returns to Doom, Lotor has him arrested and orders Haggar to craft a robeast fit for an ex-king.
The GoLion version of this episode “The Great Storming of Galra” doesn’t have this extra political intrigue. Daibazaal (Zarkon) orders Sincline’s (Lotor’s) execution. However, Honerva (Haggar) points out Sincline’s followers might revolt, so she suggests inviting the leaders of the worlds Sincline conquered to personally witness his execution, believing this will keep them in line. Daibazaal finds this suggestion very amusing and has Sincline locked up. While Daibazaal is away on Altea (Arus), Sincline’s followers free him.
I wanted to go into a bit more detail about this because it illustrates how much more how influential the footage taken from Dairugger was on the Lion Voltron series than the other way around. In Vehicle Voltron they make the occasional reference to places and characters from the Lion Voltron series, but that’s the extent of it. The may be because localizing GoLion was, really, something of an afterthought while Dairugger was what originally caught WEP’s eye.
