I mean... ask. It’s not a secret club or something. If you want to beta read for someone, ask them if they would like a(nother) beta reader and then be available if they take you up on the offer. That’s usually all there is to it.

I can’t really speak for every other writer out there, but I know that if someone comes to me and says they want to beta read, I’m usually pretty stoked to have another set of eyes going over my work before it goes public. So for me, I’m pretty much always going to say yes, because everyone brings different stuff to the table when reading and I want to hear from as many people as I can to see if what I am writing is hitting the right buttons, and is as clean as possible while doing so. On the other hand, if someone beta reads for me and doesn’t give input for or catch anything at all, I’m probably not going to ask for them to do it again, since it’s likely going to be a waste of both our times.

And it’s different for everyone. Some people are pickier about the quality of their beta reads or what they are looking for in beta reading (for example, some only want spelling/grammer, some want characterization checks, some want story plot/continuity/common sense checks), some people can’t handle being told stuff is wrong and so don’t want beta readers, some people may already have what they consider to be “enough” beta readers. Some people may have you beta read something and find you don’t fit what they need.

But you can’t determine any of ^^^ that ^^^ if you don’t ask first.

Good luck out there. If you’re looking to build a portfolio someone might actually look at, beta reading for unpublished work like fanfiction may not be terribly useful, but it’s certainly a good place to start interacting with writers and learning how to approach editing when there’s another human being on the other side of it.

HOWEVER, you can offer services in a more official (and paid) capacity on sites like Fiverr ($5 for X service), and potentially get portfolio work editing school papers and such. I don’t edit and I don’t have my original stories to the point of editing, so I don’t know much about good sites to offer this kind of service on, but I’m sure you could ask around and find more of them.

If you’re still actively IN school, I’d look into your school’s version of a writing helpdesk and join it. My college had an office where kids could bring their school papers and folks there would help them to edit and proof-read and improve their papers. They had contact screen names on several instant messaging services as well, so if you just had a quick editing question you could message the office and get a response if they were open, without having to actually go take up space and time. If your school doesn’t have something like this, maybe consider starting one- THAT would certainly look good on a resume.

Hello! I am sorry to make this public, I promise I’m not ganging up on you or something, or angry, or upset or whatever, but you’re the third person to request this and I figured a public reply would be the best way to go about this.

I am glad you like the thing, I might go back to it some day, but right now I am a very busy person and that is on the backburneriest back burner. If my writing priorities were a stove, johnny stilinski would be in the refrigerator. It was posted during a zany conversation at like 2am, which is the time of Inadvisable Decisions.

So yes, that will probably not happen.

how does accidental kissing happen? like magnet lips? were they aiming for the forehead? i mean, i've accidentally kissed someone's ear when i was doing that french two kiss hello greeting and it was awkward. something like that?
