Over the past few years, the numbers of kids dropping out of school have increased drastically. We know why kids drop out. We know why kids don’t learn. It’s because of poverty, low attendance, and negative peer influences to name a few. When I transitioned from an academically inclined class to a nursery class with students with not only diverse needs but who were academically deficient as well, I almost cried. I was so worried about how I would take my students from where they are to where they need to be, in nine months. It was a challenge that was awfully hard. I struggled to figure out how was I going to raise the confidence of a child and their academic achievement at the same time? And you know what the worse fact is; that your toughest kids are never absent 🙈 But this is when I realized the value and importance of human connection -relationships. The impact relationships can have in learning can transform one’s willingness to change their attitude of always wanting to be understood to their willingness to understand. The fact that my student’s mind did not fit into society’s version of “normal” often led them to feel bypassed or misunderstood. But with the relationship I established, they made me understand which enabled me to differentiate and teach. For students who can and do learn, it’s not only because of having access to education, it’s because of relationships that are established within the classrooms that allow for learning to take place. Integreat Center has been working towards bridging the gap that exists between the services and opportunities available for young adults with special needs in Dubai by highlighting the individual’s ability to reach a level of independence. We’re excited to open our doors for our second academic year in September 2017 🎓 We look forward to another year of learning and engaging in new promising relationships while continuing with the already blossomed ones. In our efforts to make a change in someone's life, @1000Rides, is embarking on a project with Vitabu Vyetu to improve the reading culture while reducing the illiteracy rate in the country and beyond. @vitabuvyetu is setting up a library at Kawangware Primary and they would really appreciate donations in terms of story books, text books in good condition, atlas, kamusi, dictionaries, maps, globes, wall charts.
