A couple of weekends ago, my mum and I hopped into the car and drove out of London for a spa weekend. We were headed for Wyboston Lakes and Y Spa, midway between Cambridge and Milton Keynes. Based just off the A1 it’s out of busy London and I was looking forward to relaxing out of the big smoke. We arrived at the hotel at about 11am and straight headed to reception. Our room wasn’t ready yet so we left our bags with the concierge and headed straight to the spa! The spa is separate from the hotel so we had to check in there too before entering. A day’s spa access gives you access from 9am to 5pm so it’s best to get there early so you make the most of your time there.
We were handed an electronic wristband upon arrival, which you can use to purchase items when you’re in the spa area (it’s waterproof, of course!). I saw some ladies taking advantage of the pool-side cocktail bar using these snazzy gadgets to settle the bill. These bands double up as your locker keys so you don’t need to worry about all those little things whilst you’re enjoying the spa. The staff are really friendly and willing to help so we were given a short tour of the spa first and then led to us our locker where we found a fluffy bathrobe and slippers.
After a brief wander round the spa facilities, we headed to lunch. As part of your entry to the spa, you get lunch included in one of Wyboston Lake’s restaurants and you can turn up to lunch in your bathrobe! There was an open buffet so you could take as much as you wanted. They had everything from salad, to cold meats to hot meals, cold and hot desserts. Obviously I went for.. everything. I know this isn’t the most aesthetic meal but I actually really enjoyed it. The vegetable lasagne and cold salmon were exceptionally delicious, which pleased me since vegetarian options are often lacking.

Now the best thing about lunch isn’t the food.. it’s the view! The restaurant at Wyboston Lakes is, unsurprisingly, on the water front of a man-made lake and it’s so calming to look out over this serene setting whilst enjoying your meal. A buffet breakfast and lunch are served here and it’s the perfect place to start the day.
After lunch we headed to the treatment waiting room, which was super cosy and welcoming. A few minutes later, my mum and I were collected for our Honey Glow Facials. The treatment lady was really nice and polite and explained everything to me before I entered the room. She left me in the room to settle in, remove anything covering my shoulders and lie under the sheets. It was only a 25 minute facial but a super relaxing experience – just what I needed! What I liked about Y Spa was that there were loads of different beauty products available for you to put on after your day at the spa so you could try out a lot of different products yourself. After the facial I was also given a list of products that were used so I know exactly what was put on my face. There’s also the opportunity to buy them if you want and it was great to know that the stuff they were putting on my face was actually available (and affordable!) for me to take home.
After our facial, we headed right back into the Spa. We only had until 5pm to enjoy the facilities and wanted to make the most of them! What I loved about the Spa is that it’s not just saunas etc, but there’s three relaxation rooms and a contemporary little cafe too. If you want a break from the sauna or the pool, you can choose to relax in either the “Big Sleep”, “Time Out” or “The Lounge”. The Big Sleep was definitely my favourite room as it had three ‘ergonomic’ beds in there, topped with snuggly blankets. These beds basically felt like water beds (not the sort you took on your family camping holiday) and it was honestly the comfiest bed I had ever been in in my life. IN MY LIFE. It felt like I was floating on a warm cloud and I didn’t want to leave. Even though I only hopped in it at 2:30pm, I wanted to go straight to sleep! The Time Out room contains these really cool reading pods where you can curl up in private with a magazine or a book and The Lounge was another room with relaxing beds in it.

In the main spa area there are loads of different things on offer. The area isn’t particularly large but they manage to pack quite a lot in there and there was plenty of room for everyone despite the fact that the spa looked pretty busy that day. Outside, there’s an 11-metre Hydrotherapy Pool, which is basically like an enormous jacuzzi. There’s a range of different types of saunas inside, including: Some Like it Hot!, a Kelo Sauna, Softy a moderate sauna, Salty, a salt steam room and Steamy, a steam room. On top of that there’s also Mist Showers, Glacier Showers, Frost Wall and Experience showers. The Frost Wall was the coolest thing in there (excuse the pun) and it was quite the experience going from the steam room to the Frost Wall!

Just before 5pm, we headed back to our room to rest up before dinner. Wyboston Lakes had been kind enough to leave us little goody bags with some Bee Good products, which were welcome after our Honey Glow Facial! I was also impressed by the contemporary decor of the rooms and the bed was super comfortable. Even though these hotel beds were really comfy, I personally think they should have those relaxing water beds I mentioned earlier put in every room of the hotel!
The room was very well equipped and had everything you’d expect and more. There was a fully stocked minibar (which I tucked into whilst my mum slept), a large TV, a coffee machine and even a tablet with loads of details on what there is to do at Wyboston Lakes and in the surrounding area.
#gallery-0-16 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-16 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-16 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-16 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
As I said, the beds were really comfortable (like, exceptionally so) and I snuggled down to do some reading before we went to dinner. Here’s a shot of me reading in the room, which was easy to shoot since there were so many props and things in the room 😂Instagrammable hotel rooms always get a thumbs up from me!
After we had refreshened up, we headed down to The Waterfront Restaurant for our dinner. The setting was gorgeous with even better views over the lake than the breakfast room! We also happened to be eating at sunset so we got to watch the sun set over the water, which was magical. For starters, I opted for pâté and my mum got the mushroom soup. Both very well presented and delicious.
#gallery-0-17 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-17 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-17 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-17 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
For our mains we both opted for salmon on a bed of dauphinoise potatoes. This was far better than I would’ve expected and I was also pleasantly surprised by the large portion size. Salmon is one of my favourite dishes and this was cooked to perfection so I was very pleased.
By this point, my stomach was fit to burst but I couldn’t resist getting dessert. I ordered an exotic meringue which came with dragonfruit and starfruit, two fruits I rarely see outside of Asia! We were also treated to a large bottle of prosecco and since my mum isn’t a big drinker, I had most of it to myself 🙊
#gallery-0-18 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-18 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-18 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-18 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
After a restful sleep in Wyboston Lakes’ comfy beds, we packed up and then headed down to breakfast. Like lunch, breakfast is also served buffet-style and I helped myself to all the best elements of a full english: sausages, beans, eggs and potatoes. There’s a really wide range of things on offer, both hot and cold, and you could get a full English, some cereal, some pastry etc.
All in all, my mum and I had a wonderful time at Wyboston Lakes and Y Spa. All the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and they have a good range of spa facilities to keep you occupied for the day.This isn’t the sort of hotel I’d really go to if I wasn’t also going to the Spa as it’s a little out of the way, though it seemed to me that most guests were there to enjoy Y Spa anyway.
What’s great is that I noticed the a diverse range of people enjoying the resort, ranging from young couples to friends on hen parties and also older ladies having a relaxing time. It’s the sort of place where you go to get away from everyone else and just be with a select few people, be it your boyfriend, your friends, or your family. Whilst the majority of people there were women, there were a large number of couples around too, no doubt enjoying the peace and quite out there. If you’re looking for a mini break that’s not too far from London that has the feel of the countryside, head to Wyboston Resort.
