it’s been awhile, so yeah, have a tv rec! 

Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain 从前有座灵剑山 (unsubbed // eng sub // also eng subbed on the iQiyi app - i think 12 eps are released so far if you don’t have a vip acc)

A story that follows Wang Lu, a young genius, who enters the Spirit Blade Sect and embarks on an unconventional journey towards immortal cultivation.

i was recced this show by a xu kai stan who has Very Questionable taste in cdramas, and i’m personally p meh about xu kai, so i went in with very very very low expectations, and honestly expected to drop it like half an episode in, but this year seems to be a 真香 year for me because...this show is so funny???? it’s the sort of cracky period cdramas that is so entertaining to watch, despite how dumb it sometimes is! think go princess go 太子妃升职记 go levels of fun! 

xu kai’s wang lu is a loveable scoundrel. his core makes it unsuitable for him to cultivate, but he tries real hard to make up for it with his intelligence and the help of his v unconventional master. i’m like 12 eps in and there isn’t a romance arc yet, but i’ve got strong vibes re: a reincarnation plot line being set up, so i can’t say for sure??? but i’m enjoying the fun shenanigans so far!!

there’s a whole bromance going on between wang lu and his bff xiao hai (zhu yuanbing aka 朱美人 in our circles now - side note: 姓朱的都得长得那么好看吗?), and that’s really cute too!! there was a whole scene in the rain that wang lu staged to convince xiao hai of his sincerity ahahahaha it was adorable.

tl;dr - don’t go in expecting a serious drama or legit plot because this isn’t that sort of period drama, just loveable characters and a lot of laughs! i’ve been watching it on my commute to and from work the last couple of days, and it’s cracked me up more times than i can remember. 这部剧真的很好下饭！

ETA: pains me to say this but......这部剧烂尾了, like. the ending was Really Terrible. the first half of the show was fun and cracky and enjoyable, but it got significantly Weirder as we progressed, and that’s saying a lot coming from me.
