Congratulations Kingz BJJ World Champions!
Last weekend, athletes from around the world gathered at the Walter Pyramid to participate in one of BJJ’s most prestigious events: the IBJJF World Championships. Not only was this the first time the Worlds had returned to Long Beach since COVID, it was also the first time IBJJF’s new rule was implemented… drumroll, please… close-outs will receive no cash prizes or ranking points! This made for some well-earned BJJ World Champion titles! kimonos jiu jitsu
If you’ve been an avid – or just a mildly curious – IBJJF fan, you know that teammates closing out in the finals of their division has been a growing issue. As teams get bigger, and the hottest talent in jiu-jitsu have either grown up in or moved to join the biggest teams, there have been more and more of them. Which… makes for boring events. Who wants to see two of the best athletes in the world walk on the mat, just to have one hand raised in a pre-arranged agreement, simply because they’re members of the same team? And especially if they don’t even train at the same academy? No one, that’s who.
Anyway, with the implementation of the new rule, jiu-jitsu spectators were rewarded with one of the most exciting day of black belt finals matches ever.
And more exciting, that meant an astounding SEVEN Kingz athletes coming away with the gold! So, with the utmost pride, here are the Kingz Kimonos 2022 World Champion Black Belts:
Leandro Lo
Leandro Lo, the legendary black belt, is now an 8x world champion, winning by two points over the young up-and-comer Isaque Bahiense in the Medium-Heavyweight finals! What an action-packed match!
Mica Galvao
In one of the most anticipated matches of the entire event, Mica Galvao faced off against fellow rookie black belt Tye Ruotolo in the Lightweight finals. Spectators were rewarded by one of the most exciting matches of the entire event! After an intense scramble, Mica was able to secure Tye’s back to become the youngest IBJJF black belt World champion in history!
Tainan Dalpra
Now a two-time world champion black belt, Tainan Dalpra is just getting started. His relentless passing game set him up to get a wicked lapel choke on Andy Murasaki in the Middle weight finals.
Kaynan Duarte
Kaynan Duarte’s second world championship win at black belt came after a grueling finals match against Dimitrius Souza in the Heavyweight division. Having to overcome injuries during his camp, Kaynan showed tremendous warrior spirit.
Erich Munis
Erich Munis has been dominating the Super Heavyweight division, and the World Championships last weekend was just another notch in his belt. His absolutely impassable guard secured him the advantage win over Nicholas Meregali in the finals, after which he proposed to his long-time girlfriend right on the mat.
Bia Basilio
Third time’s a charm! After finding herself in her third World Championship finals at black belt, Bia Basilio gave it everything she had in the Featherweight finals against Amanda Monteiro. In true Basilio style, she gave the crowd a show, winning by three advantage points to one.
Andressa Cintra
Andressa Cintra is now a 3x World Champion! The grueling battle against Thalyta Lima took the match to judge’s decision, with Andressa’s near submission early in the match securing her the win!
Congratulations again to ALL of our Kingz athletes for going out there and showing off your jiu-jitsu. We are proud to be a part of your jiu-jitsu journey!

Lucas Barbosa beats Louzado, Humphreys and Schrok to claim light heavyweight belt, other results
The Five Grappling light heavyweight belt finally has a owner. Atos JJ’s Lucas Barbosa powered through a star-studded bracket to claim the title this Saturday, March 11, at the Lincoln High School, in San Diego, California. The sold out event delivered a full day of action-packed matches featuring a wide array of talents, from young blue belts to experienced black bels.
Photo: Ane Nunes/Gentle Art Media
The highlight of the program, as expected, was the 8-men light heavyweight GP. Lucas Barbosa, Nick Schrock, Tanner Rice, Tarsis Humphreys, Leandro Lo, Eliot Kelly, Erza Lenon and Marcel Louzado gifted the crowd with intense moments throughout the program. Here’s how the bracket played out.
Quarterfinals
On one side of the bracket, Nick Schrock opened the program at full speed against Erza Lenon. With Saulo Ribeiro on his corner, Schrock, aka The Moose, quickly found his way to his opponent’s back and took control of the lapels to get a choke in place.
Then, it was time for the other “all-American” quarterfinal match, between Tanner Rice and Eliot Kelly. The Norcal duel did not end in submission, but Tanner managed to convince the three referees that he deserved to be in the semifinals with good attacks from the bottom like an omoplata that got Eliot in trouble to escape.
The “Brazilian” side of the bracket kicked off with the biggest upset of the evening. Tarsis Humphreys kept the pressure on Leandro Lo for the entire six minutes of their match. A near guard pass midway through was probably enough for the three referees to consider Tarsis more effective and grant him the pass to the semifinals.
The last quarterfinal featured Lucas Barbosa and last minute stand in Marcel Louzado. Despite the short notice, Marcel proved to be ready for action. Both athletes chose not to take too many risks and remained on their feet, looking for a chance to take the opponent down. The referee saw it differently and ended up penalizing Louzado twice for lack of combativeness, which led to his disqualification and Barbosa securing a spot in the semifinals.
Semifinals
Photo: Ane Nunes/Gentle Art Media
Nick Schrock knew how dangerous Tanner Rice’s guard could be, so he used all his pressure and also his speed to give Rice no space to attack. Schrock did more than that and also worked hard to pass, which in the end granted him a referee decision win and the spot in the final.
Pressure was also Lucas Barbosa’s main tool to give Tarsis Humphreys no room to move during the second semifinal. Barbosa threatened Humphreys’ guard throughout the match, forcing Tarsis to turn to the turtle position several times. In the end, the referees decided in favor of Barbosa.
Third Place Match
Once again, Tanner Rice made the best out of his well known guard game to catch Tarsis Humphreys in a foot lock that secured him the third place.
Final
As expected, its was an all out war. Both Barbosa and Schrock had no intentions of giving the opponent even one inch of advantage during the match. Powerful takedowns were the greeting cards presented by both athletes. Once on the ground, Barbosa was more successful on staying on top and threatening Schrock’s guard. He passed once, almost took the back and attacked at least one toe hold that caused Nick to spin his way out of the tough spot. In the end, the referees all agreed Lucas had done more during the match and unanimously declared him the winner and light heavyweight champion.
Lucas talked about his accomplishment: “I am extremely happy. I had three tough matches and I was able to come out on top at the end of it all. In the final match, I knew I had to take him down and control on the ground. He is a great opponent and I am glad I was able to make my game work.”
Super matches
Also in the main card, five super matches completed the program with more thrills.
First, Gabi McComb and Catherine Perret battled it out for six minutes. Gabi came out as the winner via referee decision.
Then, Piter Frank beat Michael Liera Jr also via referee decision in another very close match.
Tammi Musumeci left nothing for the referees to decide. She “berimboled” her way to Janet Bishop’s back and finished with a neck crank.
Francisco Iturralde fought his way into Magid Hage’s guard and almost landed in full mount while avoiding the dangerous baseball choke that made Magid famous. Iturralde secured the victory via referee decision.
Photo: Ane Nunes/Gentle Art Media
The final super match of the evening put Bia Mesquita against Talita Alencar. One of the most accomplished Jiu-Jitsu athletes of all times, Bia went for the kill and almost got it with a beautiful leg lock attack. Talita fought bravely as she always does and escaped the tight spot, but could not avoid the defeat via referee decision.
Undercard Results
Kyle Baker beat Taylor Rupert via referee decision
Marco Martinez beat Chris Reyes via referee decision
Ric Centron caught Carl Boudro with a bow and arrow choke
Ricardo Rea survived a tight triangle to beat Mike Khatchkian via referees decision
Bailey Lopp beat Xavier Silva via referees decision
Kyle Boehn beat Kaynan Duarte by referees decision.
Hugo Marques caught Johnny Souza with a choke from the back
Brent Buskirk caught Nathan Murphy with an armbar inside the triangle for the finish.
Ricardo Pancho” Feliciano beat Morgan Mainz via referee decision.
Tim Pablo found a hand triangle to finish Noah Tillis
Sergio Hernandez caught Alfredo Barum with a choke from side control
Baret Yoshida worked really hard on a bow and arrow choke to finish Ron Henderson
Fabricio Morango worked his way to a referee decision win over Stephen Martinez after a very tough match
Renato Canuto kept a fast pace during the entire match to beat Sergio Rios by referees decision

ADCC World Championships: Who to Watch
The most anticipated event in jiu-jitsu history is this weekend! After a delay due largely to COVID, the ADCC World Championships has returned… and it’s bigger and better than ever before. - future kimonos rash guard
Under the leadership of Mo Jassim and with the event promotion expertise of F2W’s Seth Daniels and his “Team No Sleep”, the 2022 ADCC World Championships will be unlike any ADCC event – unlike any jiu-jitsu event – in the history of the sport. With around 12,000 spectators and held at the world famous Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, it will be the most watched jiu-jitsu event in history.
Additionally, every single men and female division is absolutely stacked with the best of the best in the world, with seventeen countries represented: Brazil, USA, UK, Ireland, Australia, Norway, Canada, Ecuador, Japan, Poland, Finland, South Africa, Colombia, Honduras, Ghana, Cyprus, and Lebanon (dual citizenships recognized). See the full and updated list of athletes at FloGrappling here.
Of the 97 athletes competing in that prestigious event this year, Kingz alone is proud to claim nine of them. Who are they, and why should you watch? Read on…
Andre Galvao
After winning the coveted Absolute division at the ADCC World Championships in 2011, Andre Galvao has never lost an ADCC Super Fight match since. And while he has nothing to prove – with one of the most impressive competitive records in jiu-jitsu history – he is looking to add one more Super Fight title to his already legendary record.
Cyborg
Fight Sports legend Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu is no stranger to the ADCC World Championships, having won the coveted Absolute championship in 2013, then facing off against fellow Kingz athlete Andre Galvao in 2015. With his seventh ADCC appearance, Cyborg also has nothing to prove. But there’s nowhere else he’d rather be, and he has his eye set on another Absolute win.
Kaynan Duarte
It was his ADCC South American Trials win in 2017 – at purple belt – that put Kaynan Duarte on the map. In his second ADCC appearance in 2019, he became the reigning +99kg champion. Kaynan will now be looking for his second ADCC World Championship win… this time in the 99kg division. A leaner, meaner Kaynan is absolutely terrifying.
Cole Abate
At 17 years old, North American Trials winner Cole Abate will be the youngest competitor in ADCC World Championship history... and is looking to become the youngest ADCC World Champion in history. Cole will be competing in the Men’s 66kg category against some long-time legendary black belts. Cole has been training hard, and is ready to show fans a “new game”.
Bia Basilio
One of the most accomplished and exciting female black belts in the world, Bianca Basilio will be defending her -60kg ADCC World Championship title this year. Splitting her camp between her home academy, Almeida Jiu-Jitsu, and Andre Galvao’s Atos HQ, Bia has been sharpening the sword to become battle ready. One this is for sure: expect a show!
Mica Galvao
Already one of the most exciting up-and-comers in the sport, Mica Galvao will be making his ADCC World Championships debut! He earned a coveted spot in the Men’s 77kg division by winning – dominating is probably more accurate – the 1st South American Trials last January, with four out of four wins by submission. Since then, he’s been brushing up on his No-Gi game, so expect a repeat performance at the World Championships!
Diogo Reis
Another Kingz athlete will be making his debut, but in the Men’s 66kg division. Diogo Reis - the Baby Shark – secured his spot with an impressive win at the 1st South American Trials last January. What will fans expect from the baby-faced killer? A more offensive, smarter, and stronger athlete who is ready to make a splash at the Olympics of grappling.
Fabricio Andrey
Fabricio Andrey’s South American Trials win just last February secured him a spot in an incredibly stacked Men’s 66kg division. After a semi-finals loss at the 1st South American Trials – to Diogo no less – he came back with a vengeance at the 2nd Trials. He finished every single opponent with a submission! He’s looking to take that ferocity to his first ADCC World Championship showing.
John Hansen
A Pedigo Submission Fighting black belt, John Hansen won the 1st North American Trials in New Jersey to secure his spot in the Men’s +99kg division. The ultra heavyweight fighter with the unassuming smile will be making his ADCC World Championships debut in one of the most stacked divisions of the event.
Whether you’re a No-Gi fan or not, you must not miss this year’s ADCC World Championships. Those who can’t physically be there, can watch the entire event televised on FloGrappling.

An Interview With Atos’ Young Gun, Kaynan Duarte
Kaynan Duarte is preparing for a match-up with Alliance Team Gacho’s Roberto Jimenez in the second round of the JiuJitsu.net Challenge on February 18.
Kaynan Duarte is a purple belt from Team Atos who has notably taken double gold in the Purple Belt No Gi Worlds. The Jiu-Jitsu Times caught up with Kaynan and asked him a few questions as he prepared for his upcoming match.
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Kaynan, can you tell us when you started training and a little about your athletic background?
Kaynan Duarte: I started training judo from a very young age, and at the age of 12, I moved to jiu-jitsu at the invitation of a cousin. I am from Pederneiras / SP, a city of 50,000 inhabitants, very small in the interior of Sao Paulo. My first teachers are Ze Luis and Paulo Ledesma, and now I’m with Andre Galvao in San Diego acts.
Posted by José Luís X Altaiza on Saturday, October 29, 2016
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Kaynan, what you have been up to competitively in the last year? Which tournaments have you competed in? Any titles?
Kaynan Duarte: I did World Pro, World IBJJF, Brazil National, No-Gi Worlds, and ADCC Trials.
In the youth category, blue belt, I gained weight and absolute bread, Brazilian, and worldwide, and last year, in my first year of adulthood and already in the new purple belt, I got a bronze medal in the World Pro, silver Brazil National and double gold in No-Gi World and the latest gold in ADCC trials Rio de Janeiro.
Jiu-Jitsu Times: You are set to match another tough competitor in Roberto Jimenez from Alliance Team Gacho. How do you see your game matching up against the skills of Jimenez? What is your game? What areas of the fight do you feel you might have an advantage?
Kaynan Duarte: He is a good athlete. He is doing a good campaign, but I think of the championship in general and not only him.
I cannot answer this because I always try to train in all aspects to be comfortable in any position, from the standing part to my guard. And to know which is the best game or who will win, we will know tomorrow!
Jiu-Jitsu Times: You took home double gold in the Purple Belt No-Gi Worlds. What was your key to victory in that event?
Kaynan Duarte: World No-Gi was my first no-gi IBJJF championship; but before that, I prepared myself a lot with all the team acts with Professor Andre Galvao. Besides I won double gold, we were team champion, and it was worth all the sacrifice in training.
NOGI TUESDAYS || #atosjiujitsu
Posted by Atos Jiujitsu HQ – San Diego, Ca on Tuesday, September 27, 2016
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Can you describe what a typical training week is like to prepare for a competition? Does your training differ much depending if the event is Submission only, no-gi or IBJJF rules? What training methods do you use to make you ready for a match like this?
Kaynan Duarte: I train all year long, but before all big competition, we do a focused job for that. If I go to fight no-gi, I forget the kimono, and the same is when I will fight for gi. This year is just beginning, and I believe it will be the best year for me and the whole team. I am very excited to start the camp for the big competitions with all-time acts led by multi-champion Galvao.
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Lastly, would you like to shout out to any sponsors, training partners, or coaches?
Kaynan Duarte: I want to thank my sponsors, Stormstrong, Commercial Ferraz, and Pharmacy Multidrogas Pederneiras, Professors Ze Luis, Paulo Ledesma, and Andre Galvao for the opportunity.

An Interview With Roberto Jimenez: Jiu-Jitsu’s Blue Belt Prodigy
Sixteen-year-old black belt killer Roberto Jimenz is preparing for a match up with Atos Team’s Kaynan Duarte in the second round of the JiuJitsu.net Challenge on February 18.
Roberto Jimenez is a jiu-jitsu blue belt from Alliance Team Gacho who has surprised many in the BJJ world with five (and counting!) competition victories over black belts. All at the relatively young age of 16.
The Jiu-Jitsu Times caught up with Roberto and asked him a few questions as he prepared for his upcoming match.
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Roberto, can you tell us when you started training and a little about your athletic background?
Roberto Jimenez: I started jiu-jitsu when I was five, living in Guayaquil, Ecuador. My dad made me start because he had been training for a while and really like it so wanted me to try it. I didn’t like it at all, and I was already doing swimming and tennis, but he made me go to jiu-jitsu either way.
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Roberto, what you have been up to competitively in the last year? Which tournaments have you competed in? Any titles you have won?
Roberto Jimenez: This past year was my first as a juvenile and thankfully I won every tournament I was in. I won weight and absolute Pans, eight Worlds , No-gi Worlds, and double gold Gi and No-gi American nationals. I also competed in the Royal tournament at Studio 540 and won. Thankfully, I started the year off good with double gold at European Open.
youtube
Jiu-Jitsu Times: You are set to match another tough competitor in Kaynan Duarte from Team Atos. How do you see your game matching up against the skills of Kaynan? What is your game? What areas of the fight do you feel you might have an advantage?
Roberto Jimenez: I’m excited for meeting Kaynan. I’ve looked up to him as a juvenile and I think it’s going to be a great match. I know he has a strong passing game and I feel like I do, too. I’m going to try to be on top. I do feel like I am a little faster than him, but we will find out .
Jiu-Jitsu Times: What has been the reaction so far to your victories over the black belts in competition?
Roberto Jimenez: When I beat a black belt for the first time as a green belt people were surprised but I didn’t really feel differently , I think every one is the same and the belt is just something you wear of course any black belt deserves special respect but in the end they are the same as you and me t just depends on who really wants to win.
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Can you describe what a typical training week is like to prepare for a competition? Does your training differ much depending if the event is submission only, no-gi or IBJJF rules? What training methods do you use  to make you ready for a match like this?
Roberto Jimenez: My training doesn’t change too much when I compete. It just gets a little more intense. I usually do noon training three times a week from 11 to 1 and night training every day from 6:45 to 9. I also help with the kids class every day. I recently started to lift weights around 3 – 4 times a week .
Jiu-Jitsu Times: Lastly, would you like to shout out to any sponsors, training partners, or coaches?
Roberto Jimenez: I want to give thanks to my sponsors Moyabrand for always being there since day 1 and also to Monkeytape, Moskova, and Archetype.
