“Would the owner of the t-posing child currently standing on my cash register PLEASE COME GET YOUR DAUGHTER???”
Welcome to the world of Xelxerin. Sure, he may look like a monster, mostly because he is one, but more importantly, he is just a humble flower shop owner. The Vani of plant life took excellent care of his flowers and succulents. This made his shop, The Aberrant Garden, a hot spot for plant lovers. The day started out just like any other day for him. That quickly fell apart around twenty minutes after he opened.
“LIsten, kid, I’ll pay you to get off the register and go eat something at Chili’s or whatever,” he said, taking out his wallet and presenting her with a twenty dollar bill. The girl didn’t respond. She just kept her gaze straight ahead as she t-posed. Was she even blinking? What was she? Xelxerin put his head in his hands and sighed. By the time he looked up, she was gone. A throb of panic ate through his chest. A feral child is lose in his store, that should be great for business. He needed to stay calm. This isn’t a big deal! What’s the worst she could do? Eat the-
“Excuse me, sir, why is that child eating one of your plants?” Ohno. The customers were all staring at her as she munched on some gardenias like it was nothing. What was up with this kid? She was starting to scare him, and everyone else in the store for that matter.
Xelxerin, in a fit of emotion that could only be described as ‘EXCUSE ME WHAT??’, threw his arms out in front of him, gesturing towards the child and yelling, “WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS????” Again, she didn’t respond, but there seemed to be a faint answer in her eyes as she swallowed the leaf. At that moment, he knew they weren’t around. Oh crap. Now what was he gonna do? He couldn’t just throw her out into the streets! He took out his phone and dialed a number. “NULL? Could you come here for a second?”
NULL, the strip’s lead security officer, was there within minutes. She took the child away with surprisingly little effort, and Xelzerin felt a little more at peace. Poor kid. He could only hope she had good things coming to her in the future. He could only hope.
The next morning, Xelzerin opened the doors to his shop, only to hear faint noises coming from the back. He slowly approached the source and found, to his shock, that the girl was back. Oh no. Not this again! But... she looked calmer this time. She didn’t even notice him approach as she gently tended to the plants in front of her. She treated them with such tender grace, clearly showing a talent for handling greenery. Well, when she wasn’t eating them of course. He was almost impressed. She did it just about as well as he. Xelzerin cleared his throat, catching her attention.
She turned around and grinned at him, holding a leaf in her mouth like it was a piece of straw, and said, “Heya, mister! Kaylee Tagates!” She held our her hand. “We met yesterday.” Oh, how could he forget.
He shook her hand. “Okay, uh, Xelzerin. What happend to-”
“Oof. Fake name?”
“.....Excuse me?”
“The nametag I found in the back says ‘Carnation.’ Are you lying to me, or did you just think your name was totally lame or something?”
“That’s not the point, kid.”
“Whatever you say, Carni.”
Xelxerin put his palm to his forehead. Now was not the time to discuss that phase. “Sure. Fine. Whatever just..... What happened to NULL?” he asked.
She stared at him, once again with that blank expression painted on her face. Did he even want to know?
She smiled, “I told her you were gonna take care of me.”
“...And she..... believed you?”
“Nope! So I ended up having to cuff her to her desk.”
Why was he not surprised. They only blinked at each other for a couple of minutes. Maybe refusing this child would bring about more chaos than letting her stay. Maybe shooing her away wasn’t worth it....... No. He wanted her gone. He took out his phone and dialed a number, but it went straight to voicemail. Moments later, he received a text from NULL with only three simple words, “your problem now”
He glanced back at her. She was smiling. It was a weird, kinda chaotic smile, yet it also seemed a bit sweet and genuine. Maybe he could still just pawn her off to Insinera! She liked taking in kids! But there was only one store between hers and his. She could still come back to torment him at any time. He sighed. Guess he had no choice. “Alright, kid, just...... just don’t eat the flowers, okay?” he instructed her.
“What about the dirt?”
“NO!”
