meta analysis regarding : judgment & justice.
for all of morgana's life, she's had a complicated relationship with judgment and justice. it's never been as black and white to her as it had been to her sister. morgana is the person who, in spite of all odds or anything thrown her way, will see the best in everyone and find the light within the darkness, because darkness, too, is not made of evil as the world paints it. morgana and kayle are ancient. perhaps not as old as runeterra or the universe itself, but they were not yet born when demacia was finding its humble beginnings as a small settlement before its eventual fruition into a commanding kingdom. their mother, mihira, journeyed to targon while pregnant with the twins, with their father, kilam, naturally in tow. kayle and morgana were born on targon, where they all lived for some time until kilam could not bear who mihira was becoming, consequences of becoming the embodiment of the aspect of justice, and the life it might mean for his daughters. so, eventually, he took the girls and fled across the sea to the blossoming settlement that would one day become demacia.
kayle and morgana were not so young when they left that they couldn't remember their mother, or didn't know her station or the magnitude of targon and its celestial weight. even without her in their lives, her influence remained. kilam would speak often of her, highly and with affection, to keep the memory of who mihira once was alive in their eyes. knowing her as the aspect of justice and what that entailed, however, became a heavy influence to both girls, but unbeknownst to them, the influence ran in a much deeper level, in the very ichor of their veins.
kayle studied the laws of the growing settlement with great attentive fervor, whilst morgana disagreed with how harsh the laws were towards new arrivals to the settlement. she understood, to some degree, the mistrust in strangers, but her family were refugees from war, too. they fled from not only the harsh world of targon, but the conflicts of the rune wars bleeding into shurima.
it's said that morgana is the embodiment of compassionate justice. she does not cast wayward judgment; she always takes everything into consideration, sees every side of every story, and is always willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. meanwhile, kayle is representative of blind justice in its black and white aspects, believing only in the harshness of strictly pure good or evil without nuance. to kayle, you are one or the other. there is no in between. she sees bad behaviors, like in the committing of a crime, and does not consider why. to kayle, a thief is a thief; it does not matter to her if the thief is poor and struggling to support their family of seven. she sees herself as the harbinger of justice, but her judgment and justice is extreme. morgana has disagreed with kayle's ideologies for all their lives, arguing with a wall forged of petricite, it seemed, as she tried to get her sister to change her increasingly hardened ways of thought. it didn't matter, though. as far as kayle was concerned, no one deserved a second chance. they met their judgment, they received their punishment, and that was that.
morgana doesn't believe the same. it is this level of thought that breeds corruption in the deepest roots of their system, but these are the roots demacia has been born with, roots that were nurtured since their inception, and as the years passed, it only grew more difficult to change. kayle was a stark reminder of their mother. they looked so alike, and their ideologies were so similar. there was no compassion, no kindness, no consideration towards the plight of those who were suffering. not everything was as simple as being black and white or good and evil. kayle never asked questions, she never looked any further than what she saw on the surface. she was cold and unkind and cruel, falling into the shackles of the laws and judgment that bound them, but morgana saw the world differently. morgana listened to people and their stories, because she could see the kindness in their eyes, all of the pain and the hurt and the suffering and anguish. even someone evil, who committed a sin most reprehensible, is given a fair hearing before she casts her judgment.
these traits within the twins were only amplified when their mother's sword fell from the heavens, igniting the sparks within their blood to awaken the dormant aspects of justice flowing deep inside, confirming morgana's every fear that they retained traces of targon from their time in mihira's womb. morgana resented her powers. they were reminders of the mother who didn't want them, the mother who cast them aside, and each and every day, she watched as kayle became more and more like mihira. though their powers eventually hailed them as the winged protectors of demacia, morgana found no honor in the title. she would use her abilities for good, for true justice, but watched in horror as kayle only became worse.
as demacia grew, kayle weaponized her status as a protector of demacia, enforcing demacian law to its harshest degree, down to every possible loophole to keep evil off the kingdom's streets, and morgana begged and pleaded for every innocent citizen's case. she was seen as a nuisance, and kayle's most loyal devotee came to arrest her. morgana killed him, and thus, the sisters were not, and could never again be, sisters evermore. they took to the sky in battle, and the force of their destruction lay waste to the kingdom below. it was in this strife that kilam, morgana's beloved father, tragically lost his life. kayle seemed cold and unfeeling, remorseless over what they had both caused. the sister gilded in laurels and the kingdom's praise turned her back on the other cast in a shroud of darkened sorrows, continuing from then on to serve demacia. morgana was written out from their history, forgotten, and demacia's people only recalled there being one winged protector of the kingdom.
in the shadows of demacia, morgana watched the oppression of mages and unfair law and judgment cast upon them for simply having the courage and audacity to exist as they deserved. they were all people — they did not ask to be born with magic in their veins. morgana could not fathom how kayle could blindly support and enable the treatment of these people when their stories were so similar to that of their own, but this was the kingdom kayle was raised into. this was the kingdom they both saw turn from a small settlement into a flourishing, powerful kingdom.
though morgana's justice remains as compassionate as ever, she fights demacian corruption, taking matters into her own hands because no one will bring them to justice to face the judgment they deserve.
morgana is not a judgmental person in that she will never judge someone for their situations, especially when it is one they were born into, situations they could have never predicted, leaving them with unforeseen circumstances they could have never dreamed of. her myth grew as the veiled lady, and it is her compassion and lack of cruel judgment that resonates with not only the mages of demacia, but other struggling souls of runeterra who desperately seek the comforts of the goddess and her blessings bestowed upon them to free them from whatever shackles that bind them.
i like to think that her legends have found their way back home to her origins in shurima, and even to places like ionia and zaun, as a beacon of hope to those in need.
