Hip-Hop: Conscious, Unconscious
Tumblr media
The exhibition I attended was Hip-Hop Conscious, Unconscious at Fotografiska. The exhibit features more than 50 photographers and 200 works, but the pieces I chose to talk about in detail are both by Jean-Pierre Laffont. Hip-Hop Conscious, Unconscious attempts to catalog the 50 years of Hip Hop since its credited inception in 1973. Tracing Hip Hop back to its humble New York City beginnings, it celebrates the prominent artists of the genre, from those who played a role in starting it, to those who are continuing their legacy today. Due to this wide time frame, the dates of the works span from the 70s to the present day. The exhibit features mostly larger works, with the average size being around 20” x 30”, but there are pieces both smaller and larger. There are also some multimedia elements present with a tv screen and projector. The exhibit spans two floors and is divided geographically by region. There are 3 regional sections: East coast, West coast, and South. These sections include photographs in the specific area that feature the artists that came out of that region, as well as descriptions of how the place influenced the genre as a whole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two photographs I chose to analyze are both works by Jean-Pierre Laffont. Laffont’s piece features the Bronx street gangs of the early 1970s, more specifically the Savage Skulls. I found myself particularly drawn to his work due to the closeness to his subjects. Considering their position as a prominent subcultural group at the time, it is clear that the members of the Savage Skulls were very conscious of how they presented themselves to the public eye. In the first image, we see a gang member peering into the window of a house. I was initially drawn to this photo because of the woman, as her expression and gesture toward the photographer are particularly eye-catching. I enjoy how the viewer cannot fully see her eyes as they are hidden by the brim of her hat, but can tell that the camera is the subject of her downward gaze. In terms of the photo as a whole, I was interested in the juxtaposition posed by this domestic scene and the more violent nature associated with gang life. There is a softness to the approach of the Savage Skull member outside of the window that furthers this idea. I like how this photo creates some variety among Laffont’s other Savage Skull photos that depict them in a harsher manner than is likely expected of these subjects.
Similarly, the second photo shows  Savage Skull members talking to police about a disturbance in the neighborhood. Looking at the technical aspects of this photo, I like the mix of a posed and candid nature that it creates. The cut-off subject in the foreground and the subjects with their backs allude to an unawareness that the other gang member and police officer lack. It is interesting to consider the content of this photo, as one may not assume an alliance between these two groups. Laffont’s ability to approach the gang members and photograph them in real life provides the viewers with a greater understanding of what this lifestyle was like as many people are not exposed to it.
Returning to the exhibition as a whole, I think what it set out to achieve was slightly too ambitious than what could be done in this space. While the exhibit did show the impact of different regions and artists on the Hip-Hop genre, it is a challenging task to create a comprehensive history that spans 50 years without omitting some important factors or figures. I enjoyed the overall environment created within the exhibit, and I think that the various sections and chronological nature of the layout made it easy to digest. I particularly enjoyed the photos, like Laffont’s, that also consider the greater context of what was happening during that time period and how those events led to the formation of the genre.

do you have any 🔮 hcs about emily and spencer friendships? or if you are doing just one person then some general tara hcs?
thank you!!!
🔮 send this emoji and a cm character and i’ll give them a head canon
(spencer x emily)
-spencer reads files/paperwork for her when she's having a bad day! he notices she's not doing well and can't really focus so he helps her out and lets her rest:)
-when emily was 'dead' she would write notes to spencer to help him with his headaches. she felt guilty for leaving him and that she did so right after she was the only one he confided in. she'd write little encouragement notes and make little care packages with things he likes. she kept all of them, but never gave them to him for years. after he got out of prison, she gave them to him. when he was having a hard time, he found some peace in her care packages and notes
-in the early seasons, spencer would go over to her house and they would do little science things together!! their relationship grew and they bonded over their shared love for science :))

PFL Challenger Series 3 thoughts round up
Martina Jindrova So I bit the bullet and signed up for a free trial of Fubo TV to watch this week’s challenger card cause this was the one that interested me the most. and instead of doing the PBP I decided to just record my thoughts as I watched and share them on here. First the results
Michelle Montague (1-0) subs Olivia Parker (4-3) in round 1 - despite having a lot of amateur fights, Montague looked really bad on the feet. Looked like the international level grappler she is when she got to the body lock for the suplex but she looked bad on the feet when Parker threw back. Actually looked fine when she threw her own combos but it’s the shaky confidence of someone throwing on a heavybag. Also her first shot looked bad. Still a fine dominant debut.
Jeslen Mishelle (1-0) TKOs Julia Dorny (2-1) in the 1st - Apparently Mishelle was a pro-wrestler who did greco-roman as a teen because she wanted to be in TNA? Felt noteworthy. Either way, she stops Dorny in a high pace fight. Dorny got a couple takedowns but didn’t do anything with them. Even hurt Mishelle with a right hand but couldn’t capitalize. Mishelle just kept the pace and aggression high and you could see Dorny wilt under the pressure. Got outmuscled in the clinch despite being an experienced clinch wrestler.
Jackie Cataline (1-0) chokes Camee Adams (0-1) unconscious via RNC - Not much to this one. Cataline, a former US national team wrestler and electrician, just bullied Adams. Got her down easy, crucifix+GnP and then got to her back as Adams tried to get to her knees. Easy 2 minute win for Cataline. Personally think Cataline has the highest ceiling of the women on the card. Just a different level of athlete.
Martina Jindrova takes SD over Jacqueline Cavalcanti - Best fight of the night. If you want to see two experienced kickboxers square off in MMA, this is the one to watch. Jindrova had Cavalcanti in a bad way in the 2nd but going hard for the finish cost her the third as she gassed. That old kickboxer gas tank.
The celebrity guests were unnecessary. Not their fault. I just don’t need football players and actors deciding the fates of martial artists. Chris Camozzi said it best in his reddit post about the first Challenger Series card. It’s not a bad idea but it’s mostly just mismatches and people with no idea what they’re watching deciding on people’s careers. Also way too many mismatches. The fan vote was decided by like 200 people on twitter. Absolutely insane.
Martina Jindrova gets the contract. Cool. Think she probably has the best chance of doing damage in a division that Kayla Harrison will almost certainly win again. If none of the other winners end up getting into the PFL season, I hope they at least end up in Bellator or Invicta. 145 needs more people and women with deep combat sports backgrounds are hard to come by in MMA. No idea how Montague and Cataline didn’t make the final voting block. People need to respect the grappling damn it.

Upon realizing music was her calling, she began to pursue that passion and further her education out of state where she learned to produce music. Once that was locked down, there was nothing she couldn’t make happen for herself. Since then Kayla has recorded over 200 of her own songs, directed & edited her own videos and created a brand solely off of what she loves. I’m Overwhelmed
Okay guys, I now have 179 followers, as I stated earlier today not even 48 hours ago I had 135 followers. I don’t know if this is Christmas magic or a prank of some sort but I am going to honestly say I am in shock, I was so happy that I was literally in tears over it.
As some of you may know the holiday season is sensetive for me right now, this is only the second Christmas without my grandmother and it’s still really hard, it makes me not want to celebrate Christmas and has in fact turned me somewhat into a grinch or a scrooge because seeing it all just reminds me of the changes, and it reminds me of who I’ve lost.
So I am asking you guys to help give me a reason to smile this holiday season. It is the first of December. Who wants to bet I could get to 200 by the 25th?
Lets see if we can! I’m already getting a challenge ready for my 200 followers celebration of sorts. You guys have already done so much for me, and I thank you. Let’s push it! I will be writing random crap hopefully and posting it, you can like, share, yada yada. Shoot me some requests! They are open! I will happily do Christmas requests! Or New Years!
Again thank you guys so so much for what you’ve done already, I love you all sincerely, you guys are truly the best.
I’m going to tag @amanda-teaches and @katymacsupernatural. My two best tumblr friends, because they are always there for me and I love them and just because.
Check ya’ll later
-Kayla

Jasmine Guy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jasmine Guy (born March 10, 1962) is an American actress, director, singer and dancer. She is best known for her starring role as Whitley Marion Gilbert–Wayne on The Cosby Show spinoff NBC comedy sitcom A Different World (1987–93), in which she won four consecutive NAACP Image Awards from 1990 through 1993 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role.
Early life
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, to an African-American father and European-American mother, Jasmine was raised in the affluent historic Collier Heights neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, where she attended what was then called the Northside Performing Arts High School, later renamed North Atlanta High School. Her mother, the former Jaye Rudolph (born 1930), was a former high-school teacher, and her father, the Reverend William Guy (born 1928), was pastor of the historic Friendship Baptist Church of Atlanta, which served as an early home to Spelman College; he was also a college instructor in philosophy and religion. At the age of seventeen, Jasmine moved to New York City to study dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.
Acting career
Television roles
Guy began her television career with a non-speaking role, as a dancer, in seven episodes of the 1982 television series Fame under the direction of choreographer Debbie Allen. Following a move to California, she appeared in a 1991 episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as Kayla, one of Will Smith's girlfriends.
In 1992, Guy appeared in CBS's Stompin' at the Savoy alongside Vanessa Williams, again under the direction of Debbie Allen, and in 1993, she played the mother of Halle Berry's character in the CBS TV mini-series Alex Haley's Queen. This was based on Haley's book Queen: The Story of an American Family, a companion volume to his earlier Roots: The Saga of an American Family, which itself had been converted to a television mini-series.
In 1995, Guy appeared as Peter Burns's love interest, Caitlin Mills, on two episodes of Melrose Place, and in 1996, she appeared on Living Single, playing a psychologist advising Khadijah, who had begun exhibiting symptoms of anxiety. She also played the recurring role of Kathleen, a fallen angel, in the CBS Network drama Touched by an Angel from 1995 to 1997.
In 2002, Guy lent her voice to the PBS math-based animated series Cyberchase, performing Ava, the queen of the cybersite Symmetria, and made a cameo appearance on the Moesha spin-off The Parkers. In 2003, Ms. Guy read as Mary Estes Peters in the HBO documentary, Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narrative, a documentary which premiered during Black History month. The slave narratives were based on the WPA slave interviews conducted during the 1930s with over two-thousand former slaves.
Guy starred alongside Ellen Muth and Mandy Patinkin in the series Dead Like Me, created by Bryan Fuller. The show ran 29 episodes over two seasons, in 2003 and 2004, on Showtime. Guy played Roxy Harvey, a meter maid turned police officer and one of the core group of grim reapers around which the series was based. Guy was nominated for the 2005 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the role. She later starred in the feature-length series sequel Dead Like Me: Life After Death, which was released on video in 2009 before being shown on the Syfy channel.
In 2009, Guy performed in The People Speak, a documentary that used dramatic and musical performances of the letters, diaries, and speeches of everyday Americans, based on historian Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. A broad look at civil rights issues in America, The People Speak was executive produced by and seen on The History Channel.
In 2010, she was seen in the second season of the Lifetime comedy series Drop Dead Diva as a judge in the episode titled "Last Year's Model," and from 2009 to 2011, Guy had a recurring role in The CW's series The Vampire Diaries. In that program, Ms. Guy played Sheila "Grams" Bennett, the grandmother of Bonnie (Katerina Graham), who proved to be a descendant of Salem Witches. Both shows were filmed in the Atlanta area.
A Different World
More than 20 years after the series' sixth and final season, Guy today remains best known for her starring role as Whitley Gilbert in the television sitcom A Different World. A spin-off from The Cosby Show and created by Cosby himself, the show aired from 1987 to 1993 on NBC. Guy wrote three episodes of the show and directed one, in addition to appearing in every episode: she started as a co-star, but ended up replacing the show's original star Lisa Bonet, who left the series. Guy was nominated for and won six consecutive NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, from 1990 to 1995.
Film roles
Guy's first appearance on the big screen came in 1988 in Spike Lee's musical-drama film School Daze. Guy played the role of Dina, a member of the light-skinned, straight-haired African American women of Gamma Ray (a women's auxiliary to the Gamma Phi Gamma fraternity). Filming on School Daze was completed just prior to her joining the cast of A Different World.
The following year, Guy appeared as Dominique La Rue in Harlem Nights starring Eddie Murphy (who also directed) alongside Richard Pryor with Redd Foxx. In the 1989 film, Pryor portrays Harlem "Sugar" Ray, the owner of an illegal casino who contends with the pressures of vicious gangsters and corrupt policemen trying to drive him out of business in 1930s Harlem. Guy's character was the girlfriend of Ray's nemesis, who set out to seduce and kill Murphy.
In 1997, she provided the voice of Sawyer Cat in the Warner Bros. animated film Cats Don't Dance. In 2011, Guy appeared in the film October Baby. In 2015, she appeared in the film "Big Stone Gap" with Ashley Judd, Patrick Wilson, Jenna Elfman, Anthony LaPaglia, Jane Krakowski, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Stage
In 1987, Guy had a starring role in the off-Broadway hit musical Beehive, before traveling to France to appear in a similar musical review. Guy has performed in several Broadway productions and national tours, including as Crow in The Wiz, Mickey in Leader of the Pack, Betty Rizzo in Grease, and as Velma Kelly in Chicago.
On April 6, 2009, Playbill reported on Guy's return to the stage, starring in the True Colors Theatre Company production of Pearl Cleage's Blues for an Alabama Sky. Directed by Andrea Frye, the show was a last minute addition to the company's season and opened May 4 in Atlanta. Blues came on the heels of Guy's held-over run in True Colors' Miss Evers' Boys, which co-starred TC Carson of Living Single.
Guy directed the world premiere of the musical I Dream in July 2010 on the Alliance Stage of the Woodruff Arts Centre in Atlanta. Also in 2010, Guy was a member of the cast of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Alliance Theatre Company co-production of Pearl Cleage’s The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One-Hundred Years. The production ran Sept. 24 through Oct. 3 at the Festival in Montgomery, Alabama, before moving to Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre for performances Oct. 20 thru Nov. 14.
In early 2011, Guy directed George C. Wolfe's The Colored Museum for True Colors, and in June 2011, Ms. Guy costarred with Kenny Leon in their production of Sam Shepard's play Fool For Love at The Balzer Theater at Herren’s in Atlanta, Georgia.
In August 2010, Guy had joined the True Colors Theatre Company in an off stage role as the company's Producing Director. In announcing the hire, True Colors said Guy's full-time position would be both administrative and artistic, and both local and national. Guy continues to contribute to the company on stage as well.
Music
During the run of A Different World, Guy released her self-titled debut album in 1990. The album peaked at #143 on the US Top 200 Album Chart and spawned three singles: "Try Me" (US R&B #14); "Another Like My Lover" (US #66, US R&B #9); and "Just Want to Hold You" (US #34, US R&B #27), with the last single cracking the main US Top 40 singles chart.
Personal life
Guy married Terrence Duckett in August 1998, and the couple had one child, a daughter named Imani, born in 1999. But on April 8, 2008, People reported that Guy and Duckett were divorcing after ten years of marriage due to irreconcilable differences. Guy and her daughter subsequently took up residence in Guy's childhood hometown of Atlanta.

A POT-LUCK BRUNCH FOLLOWED
Notes:
A fine group showed up to celebrate the Un-official end of Summer. Besides those doing the workout, I counted over a dozen kiddo's and 5 dogs, mostly well-behaved. I heard absolutely zero crying, barking, or growling. The kid's mostly played together in the field, on the big tires, or on parallel bars & rings. Amos G came fully prepared to fish in the Little Harpeth, and somehow caught a 3" minnow.
The After Brunch was Kayla's idea. We kinda sprung it on Miss Linda who would have liked to have had a couple of months to plan it. I'm taking all the blame so Miss Linda won't be mad at Kayla who doesn't accept criticism as well as I do. The Pot-Luck part turned out very lucky 'cause we had way more food that even the large crowd could eat. I only ate Lew's brisket (lots), somebody's cheese/egg/sausage casserole / a taco (not made by our resident Mexican), a bagel that I thought was filled with fruit and nuts but surprised me with some kind of meat. Also I enjoyed iced coffee and a bubbly-sparkly wine. I really wanted some of the white powdered donuts, but they vanished. I noticed Zac had a rime of white powder around his mouth.
Miss Linda was especially grateful for the helpers who stayed to the last, cleaning up and putting things away.
You young parents have some adorable, well-behaved children. Honestly, you make me sometimes think there is hope for our Country after-all.

Bishop Guertin bowlers place second
Bishop Guertin rolled to its best finish in program history at the NHIAA State Team Bowling Championships on Saturday at Striker’s East in Raymond. Although there was plenty to celebrate, the Cardinals nearly took the title to boot. The Cardinals defeated Keene 4-2 in the Baker quarterfinal round. BG trailed Stevens 2-1 in the semifinal, but rallied for a 4-2 triumph and reach the final against Goffstown. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the championship, but the Cardinals didn’t go away and won the next three to force a decisive seventh game. Goffstown shook off the pesky Cards in Game 7, 216-200. Josh Fitzgibbons, Kayla Fitzgibbons, Josh Prasad, Greg Phillips, Nick Coughlin and Mike Pavlitech led the way for Guertin. “This team never quit. Not only today, but through the whole season,” BG coach Brian Jackson said. Bishop Guertin bowlers place second
