Ancient Sites, Canyon Hikes & Deserted Cities: Last Days In Fethiye

Trying to take a moment away from the violence of borders i hiked past fethiye into the first run of the Lycian way. of course, avoidance is a circular game. I stumbled into Kayakoy, the ghost town which hovers above the coast. In 1923, it was abandoned as part of the finalization of the greco turkish war, a line drawn by those far away in pursuit of an ethno state meant the town was abandoned by both its 6,500 Orthodox and Muslim inhabitants in a population exchange meant solely to concretize the narrative of homogeneity. As always the spectre remains.

1. Dalyan River
Dalyan is a town in Mugla Province located between Marmaris and Fethiye on the southwestern coast of Turkey. The town of Dalyan revolves around the Dalyan River which is also known for boat tours and is dotted with ancient ruins, endangered wildlife, and thermal springs. The river is the breeding ground for the endangered species of turtles.
2. Lycian Rock Tombs
The Lycian Rock Tombs are the remnant of the once glorious Lycian Empire. These historic tombs are carved into the side of mountains and have facades that look like the entrance to temples. It is believed that Lycians buried their dead in high mountains and cliffs so that winged creatures can carry the dead to the afterlife. These caves date back to the 4th century and have plenty of entryways that have ornate classical columns and intricate reliefs. Inside the tombs and the rock-cut chambers are empty due to several years of looting.
3. Kayakoy Ghost Town
Kayakoy Ghost Town is a UNESCO-protected village which used to be a thriving village of 10,00 people comprising Anatolian Muslims and Greek Orthodox Christians. This 14th-century village was abandoned at the end of the Greco-Turkish War when a population exchange between Greece and Turkey emptied the village in 1923. Today, the stone houses and churches of the Greek community are still present but are in dilapidated conditions. Today, this worn-out village looks like a ghost town and is a popular hiking spot in the region.
4. Lycian Coast

6. Marmaris
Marmaris is a picture-perfect coastal town in the southwest of Turkey and lies on the coast of the Aegean Sea. This small town is 90 kilometres from Dalaman, and the road goes through a scenic mountainous landscape full of pine forests. The town of Marmaris is popular for its lively and vibrant ambience. It has an 11-kilometre-long promenade which is full of shops, bars, pubs, restaurants, and cafes. Enjoy a stroll in the narrow streets of the old town, full of whitewashed houses with red-tiled roofs. The town is surrounded by deep blue waters and surrounded by mountains with green foliage.
7. Akyaka
Akyaka is a charming little town that is present in the district of Mugla which lies right next to Dalaman. However, visitors who are not planning a stay in Selimiye can still enjoy delicious food in restaurants and can enjoy plenty of water sports.
9. The Blue Lagoon
Turkey’s Blue Lagoon is a natural cove and a protected national park that lies near Oludeniz Beach. The Blue Lagoon is famous for its turquoise blue waters and scenic Beaches.
