This is the first half of the 1991 press reel for The Secret Garden, the musical through which I first discovered Mandy Patinkin could sing, and how! It’s also composed and written by women, Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman, as well as based on a novel written by a woman, Frances Hodgson Burnett.
I performed a few of the solos back when I was still studying, many years ago. This is the first time I’ve ever seen any of the staging! Thanks to aurora spiderwoman for making this available!

OUT OF ORDER
January 7, 1997
OUT OF ORDER is a farce written by Ray Cooney. It is a sequel to Cooney's farce Two Into One. OUT OF ORDER (also performed as WHOSE LIFE IS IT ANYWAY?) premiered at Thorndike Theatre, Leatherhead, before transferring to London's West End in 1990, winning the 1991 Olivier Award for Best Comedy. Both productions were directed by the author, who also acted in the Leatherhead show. It is now regularly performed in regional (see below) and community venues.
The plot revolves around a junior UK minister who has to lie his way out of a planned adultery with the help of the his private secretary, who gets more and more embroiled in the improvised story as events unfold. The action takes place in a suite in a posh London hotel and revolves around accidents caused by a defective window.
OUT OF ORDER played at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse (Millburn) from January 1 to February 9, 1997. It was directed by David Warwick with a set by Douglas Heap, costumes by Ellis Tillman, and lighting by Martin Aronstein. The cast featured Paxton Whitehead (Richard Willey), Burt Edwards (The Manager), Vince O'Brien (The Waiter), Kay Walbye (Jane Worthington), John Seidman (A Body), Reno Roop (George Pigden), Timothy Wheeler (Ronnie), Delphi Harrington (Pamela), and Cristine McMurdo-Wallis (Gladys).
For many years, Paper Mill utilized its winter slot to present farces – Run for Your Wife (1986), Two Into One (1988), Lend Me a Tenor (1991), Rumors (1992), Don't Dress for Dinner (1993), It Runs in the Family (1994), and OUT OF ORDER (1997). Clearly, success breeds excess. This was the only one I had seen. It was a sequel to Two Into One, which also starred Paxton Whitehead at the Mill, so it was a logical choice. I'm not a big fan of this genre, which was best satirized and expanded upon in Brian Friel's Noises Off (also produced at the Mill one January).
The best part of OUT OF ORDER was Paxton Whitehead. His deep-voiced dry wit was perfectly suited for this type of show. Even the show poster is funny! Although Paxton was dismayed to see himself pantless years later when the poster turned up for sale at the Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS Flea Market! Paxton is a terrific performer who also has done several Ayckbourn plays – mostly in Westport but also on Broadway in MTC's revival of Absurd Person Singular. He returned to the Mill for The Mask of the Moriarty* (as Sherlock Holmes, another character he often plays). He graciously recorded dialogue for a seminar show I wrote called “The Strange Case of the Victoria Diamond”! I still have it on tape – somewhere.
OUT OF ORDER rates 3 Paper Moons out of 5
