Character analysis: Naruto vs Boruto’s forgiving natures
Tumblr media
Naruto is a kind person. But a lot of people interpret all of his actions to being foolishly kind, when Naruto really is just a traumatized & principled character that empathizes with people based off that.
Both are traumatized & principled, but have different traumas driving their actions.
Let’s examine Naruto first:
Tumblr media
Notice, Naruto does not decide to be understanding until he draws a connection between himself and his opponent being victims of child abuse. Naruto never tried to empathize with Orochimaru, Danzo or Madara, nor had much of a negative reaction to their demise at all. Naruto also knew all 3 of them had repeatedly committed the worst sin- abused children. His biggest trauma.
Naruto hasn’t been advocating for people to escape consequences, he wanted people to atone because he understood that they were traumatized as children & never got the guidance that saved Naruto from going down their exact path. He wasn’t rly being gullible (he had nothing to lose by the time he tried talk-no-jutsu lol), kind or even forgiving- he decided no matter how difficult to stick to his principles he learned from Jiraiya. To try to stop the cycle of hatred by having people atone rather than to punish them through revenge.
Tumblr media
Naruto’s biggest flaw though, is that he is overly blinded by his abandonment trauma- he feels he has to “save” people who went through child abuse like he did. He projects too much of his own feelings onto them- when they are their own people who won’t necessarily turn around as easily as Naruto did- which is why he lost his arm to sasuke who wouldn’t relent until beaten into submission. & (temporarily) lost his life to kawaki.
In psych terms, Naruto is trying to reinforce to himself that he was always worthy of being saved, which is what drives him to go as far as he does. It’s not really his kindness, or passion but his trauma is the way Naruto deeply connects to others.
Episode 10 of boruto NNG. This convo is not in the manga but it’s clear from the manga as well that this is how Naruto feels:
Tumblr media
This is why Naruto struggled so much to connect with Boruto. Boruto wasn’t an abused child- thats why it seemed Naruto didn’t “care” about Boruto and Himawari as much as Kawaki. His bio kids were the first people very close to him without significant trauma for him to build a relationship on. Hima was still pretty young, & not as outspoken as boruto, so we didnt see that dynamic as much with her.
Boruto is still early in his story & has a lot more to learn. So this is as of chapter 14 of TBV.
Boruto’s current analysis:
Boruto has spent his whole life building healthy connections unlike Naruto, yet seems to have the same desire to “save” even the most “irredeemable” people. There are 2 reasons why.
Tumblr media
Reason 1, For Boruto he is able to forgive kawaki because he understands that he’s not in a position to judge him. Boruto recognizes that he is a threat because of momoshiki, and blames & hates himself for everyone being endangered, not kawaki who is actually protecting them in his own twisted way. & now, feeling the pain of abandonment, he also empathizes with kawaki, thus forgiving him. This is how BORUTO sees it right now.
Tumblr media
He’s also trying to make the right choices he knows ADULT Naruto would make, but adult Naruto has confronted his self hatred & knows not to take or blame everything on himself. Boruto hasn’t learned that yet, he’s willing to accept help when it’s dire, but still believes the overall burden is his alone. He has also been mainly taught by Sasuke, who still hasn’t overcome his own self hatred as much as Naruto has & desire to handle everything alone.
*boruto has actually been struggling with self hatred since getting caught cheating, that’s why he irrationally hated all ninja tech- it’s from the shame of being exposed. Self hatred is a huge underlying part of his character I could expand on later; I’m focusing on this comparison to Naruto here.
Boruto is blinded by his self hatred in the same way Naruto is blinded by his abandonment trauma. That’s why some of their actions seem so irrational, they are fueled by trauma. & These blind spots are where they both make their most costly mistakes.
Tumblr media
That’s why he naively defied Koji’s order to escape and instead released code. He knows from Naruto he can’t do everything alone, but he lacks the wisdom to understand when/how to apply it. He should’ve relied on Koji’s advice rather than trying to plan on his own which led to a huge mistake. Code is still loose.
Reason 2, Boruto’s will is to be shadow hokage. To bear burdens for the sake of the village and people he loves. Part of bearing the burden is swallowing your pride for the greater good, which he learned from Sasuke. He’s not being kind or forgiving by saving Code. He wanted to kill the shinju ASAP before they could evolve further and needed his help.
Tumblr media
Same with asking to train Kawaki. Kawaki’s fate is tied to both Naruto/Hinata, the EARTH & boruto’s fates. Outside of any emotional reasons, he literally cannot afford to let Kawaki die + kawaki’s unique abilities (shrinking claw marks particularly) are instrumental in defeating the shinju. & Especially now that the shinju are growing in number and in other villages, boruto cannot always be there to protect kawaki. Kawaki needs to get stronger fast for the sake of the planet.
I’m interested in the larger convo between boruto and kawaki and training him, but we’ll have to see once chapter 15 officially drops.

What if... Hanabi becomes part of the Boruto cast?
(warning: long post)
(remember, English is not my first language so any mistakes that you could see it's probably because of that) (If you want I could do a part 2, bcs it's really long)
Alternative title N1: What if Hinata actually had family in Boruto outside his kids and Husband? Oh, SHE HAS.
Alternative title N2: Why they treat Himawari if she had no one but Kawaki? Hinata has a family (‘◉⌓◉’)
I can talk for hours about how Neji shouldn't have died, I, myself with my friends have talked about that many times, but I'm not here to talk about Neji. The title is clear.
All this begins with Boruto NNG, I saw it since the anime start (too lazy to read the manga by that time)
I'm going to say this: I understand that Boruto doesn't have to be the same as Naruto, not the anime/manga or the character.
But I will admit that something I was expecting for Boruto was more agency in the story for the characters that weren't that important in Naruto, like Konohamaru's team and Hanabi (They are not the only ones, it's an example)
And I thought that it was not complicated to actually have that, when I saw the nine episode for Boruto, that one where we saw Hanabi and Hiashi for the first time.
I liked the way they portrayed Hanabi and I thought "hm, it would be cool if she appeared more often"
And this showed me that there was actually a difference between Naruto and Boruto: Boruto, even without his parents have relatives that are alive and care about him and Himawari. At least one, and that was Hanabi. (I could also say Hiashi but I don't like what they did to him in Boruto)
And I was like: at least they have an aunt, and not like Harry Potter's awful aunt, they actually have someone that cares for them, at least a little.
Then it come, the beginning of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.
By that time I already read the boruto manga (at least most part of it), and I actually was amazed by the fact that the first chapters were really intense.
This world that, is facing the death of the most important ninja in the village.
And I get it, Naruto is very important in the political system, also, he's very loved, he bring the peace to the world.
But he was not the only one who "died"
So...
What if Hanabi didn't care about Naruto? What if everyone sees the Hyuga leader visiting everyday the Uzumaki's grave?
"Is she visiting the 7th wife? "
No, she's visiting her sister, Hinata.
All her world seems to crumble when the news came out, since that moment, Hanabi couldn't understand how life was so... unfair.
In her head, every little memory that she has with Hinata is locked up, Hanabi feels that if she thinks a little about her sister, she's gonna break.
Hanabi was proud of the woman and Kunoichi that Hinata become.
Hinata married young, Hinata was just living her dream, having a caring and loving family with no confrontations or fights, the kind of family she didn't have when they were kids, because of the Hyuga clan resentment and the political place of Hiashi in all that mess.
Hanabi is in front of her sister's grave for the 8th time in a week, when suddenly, Shikamaru approaches her, smoking.
Hanabi seems too deep into her own thoughts to care about that.
Hinata's dream was destroyed... for a kid that betrayed Konoha, Hanabi always thought that the 7th Hokage was invincible, that her sister was safe for all harm, that her dream would have lasted until she became old and more wise.
Shikamaru tells her that he understands her.
Hanabi doesn't respond.
Shikamaru tells her to let go, that Hinata knew she was marrying a powerful Shinobi.
"Don't you dare to tell me you understand what I've been feeling this week, Shikamaru-san."
Shikamaru tells something about his friendship with Naruto, tells her that for him, Naruto was similar to a brother.
Hanabi sees Hinata's grave, when she remembers the time were Hinata was leaving home for the war.
Hanabi just remember Hinata's hands in her shoulders telling her that everything was going to be ok.
Hanabi remembers when Neji didn't come back, she was sad but Hinata was devastated.
And now she understood. Shikamaru was sad to lose someone similar to a brother, but she lost her sister.
"Your sister is gone" Shikamaru is not going to lie, he's the smartest person in the village, the (probably) next in the line to be Hokage "But someone needs you"
Hanabi looks at him.
"Kawaki may have decide to stay in his home, however, he ask for Himawari to live in a better place"
"Himawari wants that?"
"This is not about what Himawari wants, it's about what she needs"
Hanabi vaguely remembers having arguments with Hinata about what their kids wants and what they needed.
Any of those arguments ended up with a "Hanabi, you're their aunt, I'm a mother. When you have kids, you look what's best for them, even if it's not exactly what they want, you'll understand once you have your own" which she respected.
But now, the sole idea of being the only one in charge of Hinata's kid was terrifying to her, she saw Hima and Boruto Kawaki often, but she was their aunt, not their mom.
When they used to get in trouble Hanabi helped them sometimes to clean the mess or try to calm Hinata down when she discovered their antics, Hinata used to teach them every day.
She sees a little far away.
Kawaki walked towards them with Himawari next to him.
Kawaki decided to train in the village to kill Boruto when the time comes, the one who did all this, she knew that, his fate was clear, it was too late to make him change his mind even if Hanabi remembers him being more kind hearted than that.
Himawari seems like she doesn't understand what was happening, sees her aunt and hugs her deep like it's been years since they saw each other (there's been only a week) and that breaks Hanabi's heart.
Hanabi looks at Shikamaru and Kawaki, understanding what she has to do.
She had to stop being Himawari's aunt.
She had to be something else.
