The Beginner’s Guide to Catholic Saints
By: Katie Tejada Being Catholic has many joys, but one aspect I truly cherish about my faith is the vast community of Catholics worldwide. Millions of people from all walks of life have followed the path of Jesus and embraced his teachings. The sisters from Keeping Up With the Kardashians became makeup, hair, and fashion icons all because of their talented glam squad. Some of the people on the squad have been with the Kardashian-Jenners for years, while others began working with them recently. However long they have been with the family, the glam squad certainly knows how to make this famous family look red-carpet ready.
Over the years, the Kardashian-Jenners have had multiple people on their squad who eventually left due to a clash with one of the family members. Others simply moved on from working with them. But those that stayed have not only become an important part of their team, but have created close bonds with the sisters. Here is everything you need to know about the Kardashian-Jenner glam squad.
Related: KUWTK: Kylie Jenner Does Caitlyn's Makeup For The First Time In Cute Video
Jen Atkin is a hairdresser and stylist who has been part of the Kardashian-Jenners glam squad since they began their journey on KUWTK. Cosmopolitan Middle East describes Jen as one of Hollywood’s most renowned celebrity hairdressers. She has worked with other A-list celebs, such as Chrissy Teigen, Hailey Baldwin, and the Hadid sisters. She began her career by assisting Chris McMillian, who created Rachel Green's iconic hairstyle from Friends, for several years before landing the job of assisting celebrity hairstylist Andy Lecompte. Jen now has her own haircare line, OUAI, which can be found online and at Sephora.
Ariel is a makeup artist who is well-known for working with the youngest of the sisters, Kylie Jenner. He has since worked with Kim Kardashian, Lilly Ghalichi, Kendall Jenner, and Shay Mitchell. The makeup artist was discovered at 20 years old by Kylie, who direct messaged him on Instagram in April 2015 saying, "Look, whenever you're in L.A., I want to work with you, let me know."
Chris Appleton has been one of the Kardashian-Jenner's go-to hairstylists for the past couple of years. He has worked with other celebrities, such as Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, and Katy Perry. Chris grew a fondness for cutting and styling hair at the age of five and began working in salons at the age of 15. The hairstylist also has an interesting past. In his early 20s, Chris welcomed two children, Kitty-Blu and Billy, with his ex-partner, Katie, reports Quick Celeb Facts. He realized he was gay at 26-years-old and has been living openly since.
Mario found his passion for makeup while working at Sephora after a customer asked him to suggest a lipstick that would suit her face. After developing an interest in makeup, he landed a job as a makeup artist at Fox News. After showcasing his makeup skills on TV, Social Life magazine called him for a photo shoot, where he met his muse, Kim Kardashian. The pair have since stopped working together. Mario came out with his own makeup line in October 2020, Makeup By Mario, which is sold at Sephora.
Mary Philips is another makeup artist who regularly works with the Kardashian-Jenners. Besides regularly work with Kim, Khloé, and Kendall, Mary also works with Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, and Dua Lipa. Besides her talent in makeup, Mary keeps up to date on all the latest skincare trends. She always gives her A-list clients tips on skincare and how it plays an essential role in looking their best during red carpet appearances and photo shoots.
The Kardashian-Jenners love to have options when it comes to their glam squad. Not only that, but they are also very particular about who does their hair and makeup, only getting the best of the best for red carpet appearances and photo shoots. They only use the people they trust the most to get them looking camera ready.

Wall Street Rises After Historic Plunge: Live Market Updates
Wall Street’s gains fade as investors’ jitters persist.
Stock climbed Friday, rebounding from their worst day in more than 30 years, with gains that were pinned partly to signs of movement in Washington and a pledge by leaders in Germany to spend heavily to support Europe’s largest economy. But investor nervousness persisted and an early rally on Wall Street faded. The S&P 500 was up about 1 percent by midday, after initially jumping as much as 6 percent. Trading in Europe followed a similar pattern, with major indexes surging as much as 10 percent early in the day before losing steam as the week ended.Financial markets have been nothing if not inconsistent for the past three weeks, plunging and then rising, and then plunging again, as each day brought new measures to contain the outbreak and new worries that the economy, workers and businesses would take a hit as a result of them.On Thursday, stocks on Wall Street and in Europe plunged in their biggest daily drop since the stock market crashed in 1987, as President Trump’s ban on the entry to the United States from most European countries disappointed investors, who had been waiting for Washington to take stronger steps to bolster the economy. But late Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that she and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had “resolved most of our differences” on a package of economic aid for workers and companies, pledging a vote in the House of Representatives on Friday. And on Friday, Germany’s government said that it would make more than $600 billion available to help companies there, while France pledged to unleash tens of billions of euros to prevent a potential jump in unemployment by paying small and medium-size businesses slammed by the epidemic to keep workers on furlough.Olaf Scholz, the German finance minister, said that his government could take further steps, including taking stakes in companies, if deemed necessary. “We can’t forget the lessons of the previous financial crisis,” Mr. Scholz told reporters in Berlin. Also on Friday, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York moved again to inject more liquidity in the Treasury markets, saying it would complete half of its planned $80 billion of government bond purchases for the month today.“These purchases are intended to address highly unusual disruptions in the market for Treasury securities associated with the coronavirus outbreak,” it said in a statement. The volatility in markets this week reflects the increasing concern that governments and central banks may not be able to meaningfully mitigate the economic fallout from the spreading coronavirus.Asian indexes were hammered on Friday following the U.S. market plunge. Like Wall Street, every major financial market in Asia except for China is now firmly in bear market territory.
The Fed will inject more liquidity into the Treasury market.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is buying up a variety of Treasury securities in a bid to keep markets functioning normally after trading in government debt broke down earlier this week — and that effort to help became even more substantial on Friday. The bank said it would pull forward its planned monthly purchases, which total $80 billion, so that half of them would be done by the end of the day. It would also “bring forward remaining purchases for this monthly calendar and adjust terms of operations as needed to foster smooth Treasury market functioning,” it said in a statement. The swift action suggested to some investors that there could be more to come, and stock prices rallied on the back of the announcement.“It’s a signal that they are diagnosing what it going on in the market,” said Julia Coronado, founder of MacroPolicy Perspectives. “It’s a signal that we’re likely to get quantitative easing next week, if not before.”But just as the Fed was pulling out the stops, President Trump was tweeting about the central bank’s inaction.“The Federal Reserve must FINALLY lower the Fed Rate to something comparable to their competitor Central Banks,” he wrote. “Jay Powell and group are putting us at a decided economic & physiological disadvantage.”The Fed was ahead of its global counterparts in reacting to the coronavirus’s economic threat, slashing rates by half a percentage point last week in its first emergency move since the financial crisis. It is widely expected to lower rates again at its meeting next week, and analysts think it could revive more aggressive bond-buying, among other measures meant to cushion the market and real-economy fallout of the global pandemic.
Mnuchin says U.S. in ‘second inning’ of stimulus efforts.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin vowed on Friday that the United States government would do whatever was necessary to ensure that markets have “almost unlimited” liquidity. He said that the economic relief package being negotiated with Congress was just the beginning of efforts to stimulate the economy in the wake of the coronavirus.“I think we’re like in the second inning of getting things done,” Mr. Mnuchin said on CNBC.The Trump administration is considering additional relief measures, including a payroll tax holiday. Mr. Mnuchin also said that the administration is working on exemptions from tariffs imposed by President Trump that are affecting businesses, and that he would be open to waiving restrictions on withdrawals for 401(k) investments so that people can more readily access their savings. The Treasury secretary dismissed rumors that markets could shut down because of the recent volatility, and he encouraged banks to turn to the Federal Reserve’s discount window for funding if needed.Mr. Mnuchin expressed optimism that the current “black swan” period would be over in a matter of months, and pent-up demand would jump-start the economy.
A split in Congress: Who should be paid not to work?
A fundamental divide over how many Americans should be paid to stay home from work amid the coronavirus outbreak has emerged as one snag in negotiations over a multibillion-dollar federal response to the mounting health and economic damage from the virus.House Democrats are set to vote Friday on a bill, negotiated with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, that includes several measures meant to combat the spread of the virus and cushion its economic shock to the economy. One of those is a plan to provide paid leave to workers affected by the virus.A key question is how many workers should be covered by that leave plan, which would ensure compensation for people who do not go to work during the outbreak. Many Republicans want to keep it focused narrowly to workers who have contracted the virus or are forced to care for sick family members or children whose schools have closed — and they are concerned that the bill, more broadly written, could also encourage healthy people to stay home, thus chilling economic activity. Many Democrats say legislation should go further, and protect workers from being forced to expose themselves to the virus. The final legislation could affect both the health of the economy and the speed at which the disease spreads.
China makes the masks the world needs, and it’s starting to share.
With the United States struggling to meet coronavirus testing demands, China, which appears to have made progress managing the outbreak, has tried to become a resource for other nations. On Friday, the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Foundation said they would donate 500,000 testing kits and one million masks to the United States to help it deal with the pandemic. Alibaba is China’s biggest online retailer, and Mr. Ma is the company’s co-founder and former executive chairman.“Drawing from my own country’s experience, speedy and accurate testing and adequate personal protective equipment for medical professionals are most effective in preventing the spread of the virus,” Mr. Ma said in a statement.Mr. Ma said that the two foundations had, in recent weeks, also donated similar resources to Japan, Korea, Italy, Iran and Spain.
Here’s what else is happening.
Berkshire Hathaway said it would not allow shareholders to physically attend its May 2 annual meeting in Omaha, Neb., which will be streamed online. All special events around the meeting were canceled. The People’s Bank of China said it would inject $79 billion into its financial system, in a move that indicated Beijing remained concerned about its domestic economy after weeks of virtual shutdown. The travel and tourism industries could lose up to 50 million jobs as the coronavirus pandemic saps demand for their services, the World Travel and Tourism Council said on Friday. To preserve jobs, the group said governments should remove barriers to travel, cut taxes, provide incentives and support promotional campaigns.American consumers were slightly less confident in early March compared with a month ago, according to the latest University of Michigan consumer confidence index, reflecting early fears about the spread of coronavirus and its impact on the stock market. The index fell to 95.9 in March, which the survey described as a “modest decline” from 101.0 in February.“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” will suspend production next week, CBS and NBC said Thursday, making them the biggest daily American television series to go dark because of concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemicDisney will close its theme parks worldwide starting this weekend, including Disney World in Florida and the Disneyland Resort in California. Disney Cruise Line will also close.Reporting was contributed by Alexandra Stevenson, Jeanna Smialek, Niraj Chokshi, Jim Tankersley, Cao Li, Amie Tsang, Carlos Tejada, Brooks Barnes, Mohammed Hadi and Katie Robertson. ELLE’s Women in Tech: The 2020 Power List
Weathering storms over privacy concerns, hate speech and and racial inequities in AI, the tech industry is facing a reckoning. At the same time, there exist so many reasons to believe there is hope. Here are 17 of them.
They recognize that moving forward with the status quo is no longer an option and, crucially, that tech can be used as a force for good. Working in venture capital, AI, cryptocurrency and running some of the nation’s biggest companies as well as the industry’s most progressive inclusion initiatives, the women below are using their talents and skills to help tech shape the kind of world we want to be a part of.

MONIQUE IDLETT-MOSLEY, REIGN VENTURES
Idlett-Mosley worked for USA Today, then became CEO of the label Mosley Brands and Mosley Music Group (both of which she founded with her husband, Timbaland), before launching the VC firm Reign Ventures with partner Erica Duignan Minnihan in 2017. The Miami- and New York–based firm, which is named after Idlett-Mosley’s daughter, focuses on early-stage investing in companies run by women and people of color (black women have raised only 0.0006 percent of VC funding in the past decade). Reign Ventures has backed start-ups like the wedding website and app Appy Couple and the fashion rental platform Villageluxe. “I want to make sure that we leave behind an opportunity and an experience for girls to know that they’re worthy of being invested in, that we’re not charity work,” she says.
Elisabeth Fall
KATIE HAUN, ANDREESSEN HOROWITZ
Haun, a former federal prosecutor whose résumé includes a clerkship with Supreme Court justice Anthony Kennedy and a stint in the Eastern District of Virginia prosecuting violent crime, had never heard of Bitcoin when she was asked to investigate it in 2012. She quickly caught up, creating the government task force on cryptocurrency and becoming a leading expert in the process. Now she leads a $350 million cryptocurrency fund at Andreessen Horowitz, where she became the storied VC firm’s first female general partner in 2018, and she sits on the board of the cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase. She continues to be a proponent of blockchain technology. “Just like a lot of things in tech, it can be used for good things, and it can be used for bad things.”

KARLA MONTEROSSO, CODE2040
Code2040 seeks to remove the structural and attitudinal barriers that have prevented black and Latinx people from being fully represented in high-powered tech roles. CEO Monterosso was a director at the nonprofit Health Leads when she attended a Code2040 event and saw students presenting a translation app that could have dramatically improved medical care for the patients she worked with. She joined the team shortly after. “It became clear that the next version of the country was going to be built in the cloud, and if it wasn’t being built by people who had the experiences of being black or Latinx, that it was going to be built in the same way it was in the Industrial Revolution.”

EMILIE CHOI, COINBASE
This past May, Choi was elevated to COO of the cryptocurrency exchange start-up Coinbase. Prior to her promotion, she’d played a fundamental role in securing the $325 million in funding that helped the company score an $8 billion valuation at the end of 2018, despite Bitcoin’s plunge. In her two years at the company, she’s become convinced that cryptocurrency is the next frontier in technology. “The founding rationale behind crypto is one in which it’s accessible to anybody. It’s serving people who are unbanked; it’s serving people who are overbanked,” she says. “I hope that over time, we can find ways in which we can broadly mimic that throughout other [tech] industries.”

JENNIFER TEJADA, PAGERDUTY
When PagerDuty went public in April, CEO Tejada rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange after raising $218 million in its IPO. She’s the rare woman at the helm of an enterprise start-up,a software company that scored a valuation of over $1 billion prior to its NYSE debut. Tejada also serves on the board of Estée Lauder. “I’m a lot of things, and self-aware is definitely one of them; I knew that I was not somebody who was going to start something myself,” she says of her career trajectory, which began in the management training program at Proctor & Gamble. “I am more someone who can recognize a great outfit and become a very loving adoptive parent.”

ROBIN RASKIN, LIVING IN DIGITAL TIMES
At PC Magazine, Raskin, who began contributing in 1984 and eventually became editor, was one of very few women and strove to shape the magazine’s coverage around the idea of how computers, then the domain of the ultra-techie, could come to shape every facet of our day-to-day lives, a theory that has since been borne out—and then some. Raskin went on to start the event production firm Living in Digital Times and over the past 12 years, she’s been a staunch advocate for women at the wildly popular consumer technology conference CES, where she helped fashion, beauty, and family become popular categories. “Technology is a little daunting and scary sometimes, a little creepy sometimes—and it’s our job to de-creep it,” she explains.

MARIA RAGA, CEO OF DEPOP
Raga, whose last role was at Groupon, now leads the considerably trendier social media shopping app Depop, a company Gen Zers cannot seem to get enough of. (About 90 percent of its active users are under 26, and the majority are women, though Raga notes that some users prefer not to define their gender identity along traditional binary lines.) Among the reasons: sustainability (why contribute to fast fashion’s massive carbon footprint when you can get a vintage item you’re sure no one else will have?); the low bar to entrepreneurship (some users reporting making five-figure salaries); and a sense of community. For young people, it’s refreshing for what’s cool to not solely be about brands dictating from on high. “We’re allowing the community to set the trends,” Raga says.

TANYA MENENDEZ, SNOWBALL WEALTH
Menendez was a cofounder of the much-celebrated start-up Maker’s Row, which helped connect small businesses to American manufacturers, before her interest pivoted to financial services. The shift was fueled by her identity as a first-generation college graduate, which led her to address student debt, something she saw as the most significant financial issue facing our generation. Snowball Wealth, an online platform which launches in March and for which Menendez is co-founder and CEO, takes a comparison shopping approach, offering users financial models to determine the most efficient plan to pay off their debt. “It’s affecting every single part of their life, including how they date, how they think about getting a job, their relationship with their family,” Menendez says of the target users. “We feel that if we can solve it, we can dramatically change the way that the future looks for women and for society as a whole.”

SUSAN PENFIELD, BOOZ ALLEN HAMILTON
As chief innovation officer at the nearly 27,000-person technology consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, Penfield oversees all of the company’s next-generation technology advising for both commercial and government clients, giving them ways to use new advances to more efficiently run their operations. This has given her a unique perspective on the technology revolution over the 25 years she’s been at the company, where she’s gone from transitioning clients from mainframe computing to Windows to focusing on how her clients can use AI and quantum computing. Increasing female representation among her staff and in STEM careers in general has been a priority, and it has led her to create partnerships between Booz Allen Hamilton and local students. “I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to do that just inside Booz Allen, but I really had to create the feeder pool for it,” she says.

ELLEN PAO, PROJECT INCLUDE
Pao became a national symbol for the struggles facing women in tech when she filed a workplace gender discrimination lawsuit against the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. After later serving as interim CEO of Reddit, Pao cofounded Project Include, which aims to improve employee diversity and inclusion across the industry. She’s spoken out about holding tech accountable for what she sees as harmful actions, including unethical marketing and allowing hate to flourish on its platforms. “I don’t think tech is focused on the right values,” she says. “And a big part of that is the inability of tech leaders—including their executives, including the boards, including their investors—to understand the harm that happens outside their circles.”
Jennifer Leahy
REDIET ABEBE, BLACK IN AI
Abebe had always loved math, but when she began attending local city council meetings to learn about the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she had moved from Addis Ababa to attend undergrad at Harvard, she began to envision the ways that science and math could be used for the public good. Having recently become the first black woman to complete a computer science PhD at Cornell, and joined the prestigious Harvard Society of Fellows, her research looks at the ways that AI, a field that has raised significant concerns about racial blind spots, can be used to fight inequality. She also cofounded the nearly 2,000-member group Black in AI with Timnit Gebru, a computer scientist at Google, to address gaps in both research and representation. “Who’s at the table impacts which questions you end up asking and how you approach them, and who you look out for in making sure that people don’t get harmed,” she says.
HOWARD CAO
KAREN KAHN, HP
Kahn transitioned into tech after working at media outlets like Inc. magazine and PBS, and her former identity as a journalist shapes the way she approaches her current role overseeing communications for HP. Kahn, who came to HP in 2015 from the semiconductor company Broadcom, says that “the throughline through all of it has been being a storyteller.” She sees her role now as mining the company for “narrative and content that is meaningful and authentic” to share with the world.
Courtesy
CLAUDINE CAZIAN, INSTAGRAM
Prior to joining Instagram, Cazian spent 15 years working with Ryan Seacrest as part of a core group that helped launched his career and was there for the start of American Idol. This experience taught her, she says, about the entertainment industry “from the ground up.” Now she oversees the entertainment, music, and sports verticals on the Instagram partnerships team, where she acts as the “internal and external ambassador” for some of the biggest celebrities in the world. When a Hollywood A-lister joins the platform, it’s Cazian’s team who engages with the actor directly and helps “bring what they want to say out into the world and introduce it to the Instagram community.”
HANS KWIOTEK
SUKHINDER SINGH CASSIDY, STUBHUB
Before her tenure as president of StubHub, Singh Cassidy made the rounds at industry giants like Google, where she was president of Google’s Asia Pacific and Latin American operations, and as CEO of Polyvore. After becoming the earliest Stitch Fix investor, she has also set her sights on a top-down approach to diversifying the corporate culture with theBoardlist, a company she founded that connects boards with women from diverse backgrounds. “If you want to change the dynamic for women,” she says, “you need more women in power.”
Courtesy
STACY BROWN-PHILPOT, TASKRABBIT
After a nine-year tenure at Google, during which she created the employee group Black Googlers Network, Brown-Philpot left the tech giant to join TaskRabbit as COO in 2013. She was promoted to CEO three years later and oversaw the company’s 2017 acquisition by IKEA. Her interest in the company had been stoked by her life as a new mom and memories of her childhood in Detroit, where she believes TaskRabbit could have offered a lifeline to those left jobless amid the contraction of the automotive industry. Focused on increasing the services TaskRabbit offers beyond the approximately 50 current categories and further expanding its global reach, Brown-Philpot sees her work as a “mission of making everyday life easier for everyday people.”
Inti St. Clair
PEGGY JOHNSON, MICROSOFT
Johnson joined Microsoft to oversee business development five years ago, when the then newly installed CEO Satya Nadella was seeking to revitalize the flagging corporate giant. Johnson, who previously spent 24 years at Qualcomm after starting there as a software engineer, focuses on acquisitions, investments, and partnerships and has contributed to the big-ticket purchases of LinkedIn (for a whopping $26.2 billion) and Github (for $7.5 billion) and the creation of M12, a venture capital subsidiary within Microsoft. She’s also intent on updating the image of what an engineer looks like. “I think young women need to see how they fit in an engineering world, and if you go all the way out to that end game—‘Hey, you can help solve climate change or diagnose a disease’—I think that helps draw them in,” she says.
Courtesy
MELODY MCCLOSKEY, STYLESEAT
With StyleSeat, founder and CEO McCloskey found a way to use scheduling software to improve the salon experience for both stylists and clients. “Business fundamentals are something that a stylist shouldn’t be spending energy on,” she says. “A data scientist should be spending energy on that.” McCloskey created the platform while she was working distribution for Current TV, spending nights and weekends to perfect a system which handles salons’ booking, client management, and marketing. It has now facilitated over 120 million appointments and a billion dollars a year in bookings.

Nancy Baker, Black Cloud, 26" x 26", Paint and mixed media on hand and laser cut paper, 2018 Geometry October 26 - December 8, 2018 Opening Reception: Thursday, November 8, 2018
[Images] [Essay by Julian Kreimer] Philadelphia, PA - Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is pleased to present Geometry, an exhibition featuring the work of Nancy Baker, Julia Bland, Lindsey Landfried, Kayla Mattes, Alex Paik, and Caroline Santa. Mathematical geometry is concerned with the size, shape, positions of figures, and qualities of space; geometric forms and their transformations build the substance of architectural design. This exhibition brings together six artists who construct a type of architecture through an individual, steadfast, noble gesture. These geometries transcend their basic unit, whether through the repetition of a form, a mark or fold, or the meditation of the over/under act of weaving. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Nancy Baker builds intricate, universe-like, paper constructions and installations which feel similarly large and small, strong and fragile. Baker finds “solace in the geometry of fundamentals . . . she interweaves mathematical data in her constructions that speak to her need for stasis and a reliable reality.” Nancy Baker earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the US, including ODETTA Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Front Room Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Mark Moore Gallery, CA; Winkleman Gallery, NYC; Schema Projects, Brooklyn, NY; Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, GA; Greenhill Center, Greensboro, NC; Jancar Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; NC Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; 1708 Gallery, Richmond VA; Heriard Cimino Gallery in NOLA; and Lump Gallery, Raleigh, NC. Nancy Baker has received numerous awards, including two North Carolina Artists Fellowships, a Tennessee Individual Artist Fellowship, and an NEA Southern Arts Fellowship. Baker was awarded a commission with MTA Arts and Design for two train stations in Brooklyn, which was fabricated in stainless steel and was recently commissioned to create a new work for Karen Brooks Hopkins, the Director of Brooklyn Academy of Music. Julia Bland’s works incorporate painting and weaving, developing the structures and patterns that bind disparate elements into a whole. Through weaving, cutting, sewing, dying, and painting, the surface becomes a visible record of her evolving, multi-faceted process. “Weaving and painting are two kinds of binding: the warp to the weft, the image to the object. Geometry is a kind of grammar; process is a kind of syntax. Logic is pervasive, it fails, and it persists.” Bland’s solo exhibitions include Ways To Cross at Lighthouse Works and Underbelly at Helena Anrather in 2018, Things to Say at Night at 17 Essex in 2017, and If You Want To Be Free at On Stellar Rays in 2015. Reviews of her work have appeared in The New York Times, Art in America, Art Critical, Modern Painters, The New Yorker, The Villager, Artefuse, Hyperalleric, and Sculpture Magazine. She has been an artist in residence at MacDowell, The Shandaken Project: Storm King, The Sharpe- Walentas Space Program, Yaddo, Lighthouse Works, The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and received awards including The Milton and Sally Avery fellowship from Yaddo, the Carol Scholsberg Memorial Prize, The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust Travel Fellowship, and The Florence Leif Award for Excellence in Painting. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and her MFA from Yale School of Art in 2012. The mark making of Lindsey Landfried’s folded works on paper evokes an ephemeral handwriting like binary code or weaving. “Folds incorporate a patina of space, shifting vantage points or perspectival spaces. The marks, incessant and reverent writing, or obsessive and mechanized weaving, are on once stable, marred, noisy, staccato, and inconsistent.” Lindsey Landfried lives and works in State College, PA. Her work has been exhibited at Momenta Art, Temporary Storage, Tiger Strikes Asteroid NY, SPACE Gallery of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Mississippi State University, and Space 4 Art: San Diego. Landfried was a 2014-15 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner award and a 2013 fellow of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst for artistic practice. She has completed residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and Takt Kunstraum Tapir Berlin. Featured in New American Paintings and winner of the 2015 jurors award at the UNC Asheville Works on Paper Biennial, she is represented by KWADRAT Berlin and Galleri Urbane Dallas Texas. Kayla Mattes’ luscious tapestries explore systems of organization in contemporary life, and the ephemerality of digital culture. “I submit myself to the grid-like structure of the loom, but break down –and occasionally play with – its preconceived assumptions of utility or the decorative. . . Whether I’m simply dismantling the rectangle, or subverting tradition through the contemporary imagery and language that I depict within the weave, I embrace the power of textiles to communicate. In the end, what materializes is a series of layered visual systems—organized yet unruly, witty and absurd.” Kayla Mattes is a visual artist working across disciplines including weaving, sculpture and installation. She archives the ephemeral vernacular of digital culture through the interconnected threads of tapestry. She also works collaboratively in the socially engaged collective, BESTTEST. Recent exhibitions include PØST, (Los Angeles, CA), FISK Gallery (Portland, OR), LVL3 (Chicago, IL), Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (Portland, OR), Border Patrol Gallery (Portland, ME) and Hunter College (NYC). Her work has been featured in Maake Magazine, Vice’s Creators, Rhizome, and Sculpture Magazine and will be included in Weavers: Contemporary Makers on the Loom, an upcoming book written by Katie Tregidden and published by Ludion. She received a BFA in Textiles at Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Alex Paik’s paper based installations are at once effortless and awe-inspiring. Each piece is temporary, and can be reconfigured. Paik’s work has a strong connection to the architectural build up and break down of contrapuntal music. He uses “repetition not so much as a compositional device, but more as a way to explore and develop the possibilities of each unit. Or, to borrow Glenn Gould’s description of Bach’s late fugues, to “give the impression of an infinitely expanding universe.” Alex Paik is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work has been shown at galleries and art fairs nationally and internationally. He is the founder and Director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, a non-profit network of artist-run spaces; Curator of Satellite Art Show, an alternative art fair in Miami; and Chief Curator at Trestle Gallery, a non- profit arts organization in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Caroline Santa’s works on paper drawings and paintings are incremental installations or interchangeable parts that can be reworked and recontextualized, much like text or language. “Like Schwitters’ Merzbau, I think about my work as existing in its current scale or expanding into larger architectural environments, enveloping a viewer’s personal or mental space.” Based in Philadelphia, Caroline Santa has an M.F.A. from The University of Pennsylvania and is a recipient of The Charles Addams Prize. She has exhibited her work throughout the northeast in Philadelphia and New York, as well as in San Antonio, TX at The Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum. Internationally, Caroline was an artist in residence at the Lucy Tejada Center of Culture in Pereira, Colombia, where she had a solo exhibition. Caroline is a founding member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid. Caroline recently collaborated with the Grammy Award winning choir The Crossing and composer Joshua Stamper to create a multimedia installation in The Icebox, Philadelphia’s largest uninterrupted gallery space.
