The Birthday Party by Laurent Mauvignier, translated by Daniel Levin, Fitzcarraldo Editions FRANCE
While Patrice plans a surprise for his wife's fortieth birthday, inexplicable events start to disrupt the hamlet's quiet existence: anonymous, menacing letters, an unfamiliar car rolling up the driveway. And as night falls, strangers stalk the houses, unleashing a nightmarish chain of events. Told in rhythmic, propulsive prose that weaves seamlessly from one consciousness to the next over the course of a day, Laurent Mauvignier's The Birthday Party is a deft unravelling of the stories we hide from others and from ourselves, a gripping tale of the violent irruptions of the past into the present, written by a major contemporary French writer.

The Girl in Tails a 1926 film directed by Karin Swanström, Sweden
Swanström was a Swedish actress, director and later film studio executive who eventually discovered Ingrid Bergman. In this charming film about a small rebellion, she takes the comic and ultimately poignant role of a widow who tyrannises the small-minded, conservative village of Wadköping.
Magda Holm plays the clever and spirited Katja, who, indignant at getting second-class treatment as a girl, attends a graduation ball in her brother’s dress suit. Revelling in her new sexy persona, Katja speaks her mind and samples masculine freedoms – cigars, schnapps, a dance with a girl. Ostracised by her shocked neighbours and family, she takes refuge in an idyllic commune for intellectual women.
With its easygoing humour and lovely bucolic setting, the film ends up on the side of resolution and social harmony, but it is the heroine’s one, elated night of rule-breaking that makes it memorable.

In just a few days, life in Haparanda is turned upside down. Not least for Hannah, who is finally forced to confront her own past.
Review:
A dead wolf, a drug deal gone wrong, and a lethal female assassin. The story follows various POVs and focuses on interconnecting mysteries. One of the main protagonist is Hannah Wester, a policewoman in the remote northern town of Haparanda, Sweden. Hannah finds herself on a new case involving the human remains in the stomach of a dead wolf. The wolf died from poisoning.... and the remains are linked to a bloody drug deal across the border in Finland. Now Hannah and her colleagues must find where the drugs and money have gone and how this victim ended up in the woods outside of Haparanda?? This was definitely an interesting read as the story progresses and you see how various perspectives and characters reflect the events of the mystery. Definitely give it a read if you like mysteries.
*Arc received from work and used to give an honest review*
