Hi! I made the Kotku/Kitsey/Katya/etc. post and the Puppy/Popper/etc. post and I think that an argument can be made that noted dog lover DT might be trying to associate dog-related names with genuine relationships and cat-related names with disingenuous ones.

I think it’s valid for characters who have in lived a lot of places to have an accent that reflects those influences that doesn’t sound exactly like one accent from those specific places. (And there are regional variations!) In the book, he sounds Australian and a tiny bit Eastern European. I think that the main thing is for the actors to really commit, and from the little bits I’ve heard, they did. I also have my issues with Erik Singer, but that’s neither here nor there.

The regional variations thing is something I think about a lot. I wonder if many people’s knee-jerk reaction against actors’ accents is because they’re just comparing it to one single gestalt they have. I remember many years ago a coworker’s friend bemoaning that Karen Gillan’s Scottish accent sounded fake, when she is in fact...Scottish. But she’s from Inverness, not Glasgow, so sounds different from say, James McAvoy. But these are both Scottish accents!

so i’ve been thinking for a while about 1x04, and what the versions of alice and eliot that we see in quentin’s nightmare actually mean.

i’ve seen a couple posts that use these versions of alice and eliot as proof that quentin is bisexual, which - i’m definitely not contesting that he is bi, but i think 1x04 is evidence much more of s1 quentin’s desire for friendship and belonging, rather than his bisexuality. 

to start with, who are the alice and eliot in quentin’s nightmare? calling them caricatures of themselves would be inaccurate; eliot is a handsy drug addict willing to trade sex for pills, and alice is literally delusional and thinks quentin is there to rescue and/or “mate” with her. both of them are clearly attracted to quentin, and both of them are attempting to engage in escapist behaviors (drugs, sex) rather than do anything remotely helpful.

it’s this last part that i think is key to understanding what quentin’s brain is throwing at him with these versions of alice and eliot. yes, this is a nightmare that is started and held in place by a spell, but the details are all quentin. quentin’s nightmare in 1x04 is full of things he is terrified of, more specifically, things that he believes could be true. it’s important to remember that quentin’s nightmare is not fundamentally fantastical in the context of his own history. he is mentally ill, he has been hospitalized multiple times, he has spent his life wishing that he felt like he belonged anywhere and engaging in escapism to deal with his depression. his nightmare is that his mental illness (and his escapism) has permanently alienated him from any kind of meaningful and autonomous life. his nightmare is that the belonging he found at brakebills doesn’t exist, and that the people who care about him can’t or won’t help him.

so how do alice and eliot fit in this? what is the thing about them that is meant to make quentin miserable, and scared, and hopeless? i don’t think it’s the fact that they’re attracted to quentin; canonically he’s attracted to both of them. instead, i’d argue that it’s the fact that they’re only interested in him because they want things (primarily sex) from him. this alice and eliot don’t seem to want to be friends with him, they don’t really want to talk to him, they don’t care what kind of trouble he’s in. they’re there physically (well, sort of), but mentally? zilch.

basically, alice and eliot’s role in the nightmare is representative of his fear that the friends he has made are not his friends. that they don’t care about him, that they don’t understand him, that they spend time with him solely because they want things from him. the eliot and alice in quentin’s nightmare repeatedly express their desire to have sex with him, and that is part of the nightmare. quentin, in the nightmare and in his life, is looking for friends. he’s looking for understanding. he’s looking for belonging.

and, importantly, he’s also feeling guilty about his argument with julia in 1x03 at the hedge safehouse. it’s one of quentin’s worst moments, arguing that his treatment of julia is justified because, according to him, she friendzoned him. and it’s a mirror of what we see nightmare!alice and eliot doing in 1x04 - they’re not his friends. they just want sex.

so, that’s my take. quentin coldwater, depressed, insecure bisexual looking for a place and people who make him feel like a person. his hope? that he’s found that at brakebills, with alice and eliot. his fear? that one way or another, none of it was real.
