Spielberg's tribute to journalism

The Post directed by veteran filmmaker Steven Speilberg is the story of the Pentagon papers and the exposure of the shocking paper from the press.   Spielberg read the script and felt a deep passion. Spielberg said, “The level of urgency to make the movie was because of the current climate of this administration, bombarding the press and labeling the truth as fake if it suited them.” Rightly so the post could not have come in the cinema at a better time.

The film takes place in heat of the seventies.  Daniel Ellsberg former United States military analyst had just stolen The Pentagon paper after finding shocking details about United States involvement in the Vietnam war.  The papers contain information that Former United States Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara knew that America could not win the Vietnam war but was still sending continuing the war soldiers to save face for America. The film focuses on the Washington Post. The two main characters Katharine Graham, the disregarded publisher and Brad Bradlee the hard gritty editor.  

Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks played really well of each other, as experienced as they are I was not surprised that they gave such a good performance.  Streep posses the feeling of doubt and weight that was on Graham’s shoulder spectacularly well throughout the film, Tom Hanks did a good Ben Bradlee.  However due to the PG-13 rating very much a cleaner Bradlee compared to Jason Robards in All the president's men.  

I feel at times this film was too Hollywood.  As dark and outrageous as the story was I was never really astounded by anything. Very little detail was shown about the Pentagon papers and the way the film was set up it was almost hinting that we were going to be more focused on Katerine Graham but we only see bits and pieces of her struggles.  It was a very straightforward film, not really showing anything beyond the process of publishing the Pentagon Papers.  The film should have capitalized on more individuals struggles to add more depth.  It felt a little rushed and all over the place in the opening.  

The best part of The Post is when Washington Post finally got the papers, and the camera was set right in the thick of the action. This produced some of Spielberg magic that the film was lacking from the beginning.  The feeling of justice and angst was up in the air, so much passion in the remainder of the film, resulting in a more steady narrative.

At its core, The Post was an important film.  With everything that is going on today with the press, The Post attempts to strike a huge impression on contemporary views on news publishers. and reminding us that there is nothing more important than the truth.
