muv luv alternative reflect
start date: 2/12/24
end date: 4/14/24
~~~ spoilers đ» ~~~
first thought on the story: before i even started i was so ready like i told everyone n their mamas abt how i was going to start this epic đ. i was expecting A LOT bc not only is it regarded so highly by vn fans but also bc it left me with a slew of questions from the first game.. likee what was the relation of kasumi and sumika? was takeru going to fr survive this n if he DID is he going to go back to his original world? WHAT made him shift into this fucket up world in the first place? WHAT exactly are the BETA and why are they doing thissssđđ AND! IS takeru destined to suffer forever? Why?!
But now that ive finished it all.. wtf đ its honestly genius. a narrative that uses its medium and genre in the fullest sense!!! despite some of its outdatedness + my frustration with the protag the STORY TELLING is what kept me going. from the themes to the characters to the world building it was all so well done đ and its done in a way where it is satisfying to follow especially if you like to puzzle n piece things together. what interested me the most tho was the world building!! AND HOW IT ALL MAKES SENSE.. the game took all of the cliches and mechanics it represented as a dating sim n flipped them all in its favor to tell a crazy epic cohesive multi dimensional scifi tale.. WTF.
as a novel and a game it did its job beautifully.. AND even tho SOME arcs PISSED ME OFF n SOME scenes left me scowling at what i was dealing with (bc My god,! You will deal with the shit!) i kept coming back with genuine intrigue humm
my first initial thought once i was done was 'that was a LOT' bc My goodness what a fckin rollercoaster.. ONE that seemed to only plummet DOWN. As for my second thought..? 'at least we overcame.' and u know what. So true. To this i say Congratulations Ăąge. I was unfamiliar with ur game.
prediction of the end: i honestly did not know what to expect for the end i just wanted my questions answered LOL! but when i got there it left me feeling both hollow and full.. it was heartbreaking..! BUT also cathartic?! cuz i cried like a bitch. bc. My gosh đđđđđđ its some serious whiplash stored in those last 2ish hours in the game. it was worth seeing all of it tie together tho bc in the end it left u with a glimmer of hope for the future.. even though it is so so dim, its still there.. which was the kind of ending i need during these times
PLUS they played this song at the end like why would u do that. shit had me bawling fr. we used to be so happy hearing this. now it is a bit bittersweet and nostalgic.. like a memory
what scared you most: the capabilities of the BETA most definitely r u kidding me. every single battle seemed more n more hopeless đ every step that was taken to help humanity had high stakes. there was no way anything was going to be done without irreparable damage n loss. it constantly felt like a losing battle watching humanity try to survive and still have the heart to fight. but what TRULY disturbed me was sumikas relationship with the BETA and how they decided to tackle it. THAT shit had me pause the game for a hot min bcuz seriously? HONESTLY? it was overkill. beating a dead horseđ they did not have to show me all of that N whats worse is that they HAD to drag it out. LIKE WE GET IT. WE GOT IT BEFORE IT WAS EVEN FULLY REVEALED WITH CONTEXT CLUES.. U did not have to dedicate a whole 30/45 mins revisiting her trauma in such detail đđđ so unnecessary my god.
even though the BETA are (by far) one of the most terrifying enemies that ive encountered in a story i want to know more about them.. the ending of alternative mightve answered most of my questions but it also left me having more bc its interesting on how the BETA operate. but there is also like an infinite amount of them i dont even know how anyon could keep up with that.. truly humanity has it BAD.
favorite character(s): meiya = sumika > kasumi = yuuko > ayamine >>>> the rest of the queens in the valkyrie squad (including marimo. excluding kashiwagi) >> tsukoyomi > takeru >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> kashiwagi.
i straight up i do not like kashiwagi LMFAOOO like i do not like her yall..
anyone else not listed i just didnt gaf..
meiya and kasumi rlly shined in alternative for me tho <3
of course so did sumika but thats bcuz i was always biased towards her LOL. however she didnt leave a huge impression on me in this story when it came to the romance between her n takeru which is crazy bc in extra i was full #teamsumika. cuz takeru n sumika been living side by side since childhood n now this random girl (meiya) shows up n she doesnt even explain her relation to takeru but she declared that shes going to marry him like fr who are u?! BUT! even tho i was team sumika, in the end (when truths were fully revealed), my feelings were a bit swayed towards meiyas favor!
its interesting bc in alternative it was like meiya n sumika switched places bc i was more partial to wanting meiya to be with takeru for the majority of the story (!) which is so funny considering how ride n die i was for sumika at the very beginning.. of course id rather have takeru have no baes at all bcuz his character is just so inconceivably dense at times (#TakeruOUT) but i felt that their relationship had more sustenance.. i believe its because meiya and sumika flipped roles where sumika is now the random 'newcomer' instead of meiya. n also bc i spent more time with meiya in unlimited.. BUT just like how i was with meiya in extra, in alternative when truths were once again revealed at the end my feelings were swayed towards sumikas favor LMFAOO
its just tht they are both so well written and humane and so so sweet and deserving. i really love them both therefore i have decided that there is no more #TEAMSUMIKA or #TEAMMEIYA anymore. ive ended the civil war. they are both equally beautiful and i want them to be best friends forever!
AS for the protagonist. Takeru. my god man đ talk about change. he STILL was so ridiculous at times but even then he STILL managed to mature. proof that anythings possible. I guess. And after spending over like 60 smthing hours with him n experiencing his crazy ass situation i have been able to witness and appreciate his growth ... U know what takeru. U alright............................... I guess
favorite quote: I dont even know if i have a favorite quote there was so much covered and so many great quotes in this.. if i HAD to pick tho its probably this awesome reminder:
instead of memorizing quotes im thinking of moments.. like when kasumi and sumika speak about their connection.. or when captain isumi gave takeru that pep talk before operation 21st.. OR WHEN sumika told takeru that in every universe she loves him and him saying that he feels likewise.. kyaa.. and u KNOW they MEANT THAT SHIT THRU AND THRU! its beautiful. im still praying for her tho.
rating for the whole book: despite all that it put me through this story left me a lot of food for thought. some moments moved me in ways so honest that it left me speechless while also giving me questions in its wake.. it took me a while to finish bc it had me stop n think about life and CHOICE multiple times in the realest sense omfg. it had me think of the serious unruliness of life n how do we navigate it when the universe decides to do whatverr the fuck it wants to do.. how much of our fate can we really control... AND when all seems hopeless how do we manage to find the will to continue on.. !? it all varies from person to person but ist deep shit. Very inspiring.. AND bc of how satisfying n thought provoking it was im giving it a 5/5. OKAYY
i def plan on revisiting the trilogy in the future and see if my first thoughts still ring true.. i also will be on the look out for details and hints when i comb thru it all again. but this first read was worth it and now that i finished i kinda feel empty LMFAO. i wish for more people to read it n talk about it so i can get on my soapbox n pick it apart. đ€Šââïž
Muv-Luv Royal AU Headcanons (?) Part 2
Split into multiple parts because tumblr aaaaaaaaaa
Also possible spoilers for Muv-Luv Alternative
Part 1
Kamiyo Tatsunami, Tomoe Yukino, and Ebisu Minagi: They all work as maids/ninjas/bodyguards for Meiya and Yuuhi.
Akane Suzumiya: 2nd princess of the Suzumiya Family. She is very popular, due to her great skills at sports and friendly nature. She is very close with her sister, and wants to make sure she is healthy and safe. Because of that fact, she wants to become the next queen, but she is fine if she doesn't, wanting to become a knight to protect Haruka otherwise. She has a rivalry (and is best friends with) a noble from the Kagami Kingdom, Chizuru Sakaki.
Haruko Kashiwagi: 2nd-in-command of the Kagami Family Royal Guard. She's an athletic tomboy with lots of friends. She is close with Takeru and likes to tease him a lot. She uses the money she makes from her job to support her two younger brothers, who she loves deeply.
Yashiro Kasumi: Agaa~ A young orphan who was taken in by the Kagami Family to be almost like a 2nd princess. She and Sumika are like sisters, spending lots of time together and having an inseparable bond. She knows much more than what she is letting on, and always has some kind of idea about what someone is thinking. She also has some sort of connection to Yuuko.
Yuuhi Mitsurugi: The princess of the Mitsurugi Family. She is widely adored by all, with her kindness and beauty being known to those even outside of her kingdom. She is considered the ideal ruler for this exact reason. She loves Meiya a lot, and has done all she can to make sure that she is safe. Although she is always surrounded by bodyguards, she still is able to put up a fight on her own if need be.
Isumi Michiru: The 2nd princess of the Isumi Family. The Isumi Family has 4 princesses, all of whom love the same man, Masaki Maejima. Because of this, they made an agreement of whoever wins over Masaki's heart becomes the next queen. Isumi loves him, but she has fairly low self esteem, so she has partially given up on her dream. Regardless, she aspires to be a knight, and is very studious and a great leader.
Hayase Mitsuki: The leader of the Suzumiya Royal Guard. Mitsuki is a noble woman with a strong heart. However, she blames herself for the accident that happened to Haruka, which is why she vows to protect her. She is best friends with Haruka, which is why she does the best she can to hide the feelings she harbors towards Takayuki, so her best friend can be with him instead.
Haruka Suzumiya: The 1st princess of the Suzumiya Kingdom, and who is the exact type of gal who would come to mind when thinking of a princess. She is almost angelic in her beauty and cares deeply for all of her subjects. However, she is very frail, and this frailness was only made worse after an assassination attempt left her in a coma for 3 years. She is in love with her personal guard, Narumi Takayuki, who just so happens to be the same man her best friend, Mitsuki, loves as well. While her subjects do generally like her, many feel as if she is too frail to take up the position of queen. If that is the case, Haruka is fine, as her dream is to be a picture book author.
Munakata Misae: Princess Touko's bodyguard, best friend, and definite possible lover. Sheâs rather aloof at times, but likes to tease others, especially Touko. She is always waiting for someone, but Touko is the only one who knows who this person is.
Kazama Touko: The princess of a small client state of the Isumi Kingdom, the Kazama Family. She is similar to Haruka in the sense that she is also the ideal princess. While beautifully feminine, she does still have some sass, which makes her well liked. She is very close with Munakata.
1 year of Muv Luv
Today, July 5th (just two days before Sumikaâs birthday), is my one year anniversary of starting the Muv Luv franchise. Itâs hard to imagine that I could have predicted the effect that this monumental story of love and war, trauma and camaraderie, regrets and atonement, would have on me. I donât think that most of us who start Extra can imagine where the story is going to go from there, and that makes it all the better, all without feeling like an unnecessary or grimdark plot twist.Â
The Extra route, especially âlacrosse arcâ gets a lot of flak for being rather tropey. and while it certainly is that, it is possibly THE most vital part of the franchise! Not only does it provide necessary setup for Unlimited and Alternative, it is a good story in of itself. Despite being a tropey romance visual novel, it still manages to have a LOT of heart and genuine emotion packed into each of the routes, each of the girls having a solid romantic story told between them and Takeru. It is this love, between Takeru and everyone, between him and the squad, that has the power to cross time and space and move universes, the âloveâ from âSave in the name of true loveâ.
Thatâs where Altered Fable kinda falls short for me. It had a great setup, from the epilogue of Alternative, while having Takeru return to the Extraverse, still had the âemotionâ and heart remaining, with his inexplicable feelings of sadness on seeing each of the characters again. I like the idea that itâs not just Takeru that has these feelings, that each and every one of Isumiâs Valkyries and Yokohama Base members have these feelings somehow, even though they donât know their origin. I donât accept the idea that the memories and experiences of Alternative are forgotten by all but Kasumi and Takeru. The memories might not be there, but the feelings remain, the loves that were born in Extra and forged stronger in Alternative.Â
They were the Valkyrie Squadron, Isumiâs Valkyries, and this then is their Valhalla, their warriorâs rest. At last. The world that not only they fought for, but the world that everyone across the Alternative world fought for. A world of peace, a world of love, a world where birds are free to soar in the sky.Â
This all a wishful thinking interpretation, since Altered Fable fails to live up to the premise set up by Alternativeâs epilogue. Itâs not bad and I donât completely dislike it, but it is overly fanservice-y, bringing back Alternative-verse characters but without any of the emotion behind it. While it is nice to see literally everyone again, the overall story has the tropes and gags of Extra but without the heart to it, aside from in Kasumiâs route, which is one of the few direct references to Alternative. The 24 references are also super dated and probably werenât that funny back when AF first came out.Â
I am really looking forward to the anime, though I am pretty nervous about it. As you can see, Iâm a pretty big Extra fan, and I feel itâs going to be really hard for the studio to tell the story of Alternative without including Extra and Unlimited, and the emotions behind them, in some shape or form. I donât feel like this is something that can be covered in one or two episodes or flashbacks. If they did like two movies, one for Extra and one for Unlimited, maybe then thatâd serve as a good enough foundation for the anime, but ultimately the best way to experience the story of Muv Luv is through the visual novels, of course. Iâm also rather concerned about the studios they have working on the anime, neither Yumeta Company or Graphinica have much popular/good stuff to their names, and Graphinica was behind the Record of Ragnarok, which was a flawed adaptation to say the least. Iâm also not a huge fan of the new character designs and the removal of the necessary hair vents, but I guess thatâs just the way it is when a franchise is almost 20 years old, things get âupdatedâ.
These concerns aside, the trailers look AMAZING and do make me really hopeful for the anime!
Muv-Luv/SNK: grim reminder of what a remix is...
I never got to read a deep comparison between SNK and MLA. So I went through that VN (it was an awful experience actually and I donât recommend it) and got myself to see the backstage of SNK. I still donât know how to feel... disappointed? I just donât know.
So... letâs get started...
Muv Luv Alternative is about a teenager waking up in a different world, knowing that in the near future humanity will perish because aliens will attack. In the previous world he was a soldier and was involved in an experiment that failed without knowing it. He must now do anything to make that experiment success and save humanity.
I just will take some points that I found quite disturbing and familiar.
0. About making choices and keep moving forward.
The main point of Eren always having to make a decision... thatâs how VN work. The feeling that you can choose something and make a difference. Thatâs just an illusion in every VN. In MLA there is only one way and your decisions doesnât change anything. The only way is to keep moving forward until the end. Does it sound familiar?
Did nobody wonder why Eren always give options when he wants others to make a move? It always bothered me. When he met Ymir, he gave her TWO options. TWO. Keep being like that or stick to his plan.
1. The enemies
Aliens/Titans. I wonât say too much about it. Humans are weak, they are almost invincible. Any communication is impossible until the end. The difference here is that titans are actually humans.
Side note: Sumika, the female protagonist, starts saying âIâll kill them allâ like a psycho.
2. Childhood friends and a lost home
A boy and a girl losing all they have. The male main character is Takeru and the female is Sumika. Both are childhood friends and neighbors. When the first attack begins in the previous world, their home gets crushed by a mecha. Parents die and both have to survive alone.
Towards the end, Sumika asks him to take her there. Just as it was before Mikasa and Eren got to the basement.
Sumika and Takeru get captured by aliens. He dies trying to save her from being eaten. Just as Eren tried to save Mikasa from those three human traffickers. Fortunately, Eren did save her while (and this gets me mad because it was totally unnecessary... such an insult) Sumika was raped and got eaten by the aliens. Only her brain remained. Then she became a robot (?) part of the experiment (00 unit) that failed.
Well... ch. 112: âThe real Mikasa disappeared that dayâ.
Sumika and Mikasa âlosingâ their humanity and being a byproduct of an experiment. Guiltiness is what Eren feels about Mikasa.
The next thing was just too much: In the first time Takeru and Sumika (actually 00 unit) meet in the current world and she got.... ta dah... headaches! The headaches disappeared as she gets stabile by being with Takeru and building a bond.
(Pop up writerâs thought: I would call it a hell of âinspirationâ).
How is Sumikaâs personality?
Annoying and cute. Just a common tsundere and obsessive, jealous, etc. etc girl.
She always wants to be with Takeru, her wish after being devoured is to see him again what causes the time loop and a lot of suffering.
Mikasa is different. Just her attachment to Eren and her tsundere side is there in the first chapters.
3. The paths
I think the projection in Muv-Luv is a rough version of the paths. Sumika and Kasumi, another fem character, possess the power to communicate memories.
In the end, when Sumika sacrifices herself to end the loop, Kasumi gets her memories and project them to Takeru so he can understand Sumikaâs last thoughts.
4. The wish of seeing the ocean
Right. Kasumi, a girl which powers come from human experiments, never got to know a family nor the outside world. In the end, she promises Takeru to go to the ocean. Armin?
5. The three
Okay. That three in ML is like a symbol of this universe. Even another side stories happen there. In MLA (manga) Takeru sits near a three and sees a vision of Sumika.
Isayama then mixed it with Nordic mythology.Â
6. See you later/soon
Towards the end, Takeru has to go back to his world. After Kasumi confesses her feelings for him (yes, another one...harem), all goes blank and she says âsee you laterâ. The point here is that it would be weird for her to say it because Takeru already died in this world and the current Takeru and Kasumi will part ways. She said that, because she could remain connected to him due to her power
7. Die at the hands of the beloved one (and this is actually a cliche)
Meiya, the other female protagonist, is attacked by the aliens in the final battle. She was secretly in love with Takeru (another one falls ÂŹÂŹ) and asks him to kill her. Someone made the theory Eren would be killed by his beloved one(s).
Then Takeru wake up and says:
(because all his squad died in the final battle)
8. Memories
Kasumi and Sumika have the power to read the mind and memories and also project them. At the end, Kasumi convey her feelings to Takeru but she really doesnât know if it is her or Sumikaâs feelings.
Shifters do have the same problem, donât they?
9. The last will
Several characters have the same wish as Eren: that his friends live on.
And Sumika says quite the same but Kasumi also said that she had to endure knowing she was the reason all people was suffering.
Sumika deciding to sacrifice herself to save the others and to give humanity a future...
It sounds familiar. As if this was all mixed and combined to make Erenâs feelings...?
---
There is a lot more I could say or points to compare. I also avoided to point out things about the original parts of SNK. Anyways. I found this interesting and self-explanatory. But I donât want to make any theory about the ending of SNK. I have the feeling Isayama wonât write exactly the same ending but heâll try to emulate the same feeling at the end: that although the protagonist accomplished his mission and give humanity a future, it was just the start because aliens were still there as a threat (in this case will be hatred).
the english VAs for acfa are amazing, but I get tickles of wanting to listen what the characters say in japanese since thereâs no dual audio, and its an old game so video capture of the japanese version is harder to find
It must be a trip for anime only watchers to just be hit in the face with Papa Yoroi with zero explanation
Also I'm little disappointed with Papa Tama not having his full mustache glory. That was a truly tragic nerf.
Muv Luv Part 2: Unlimited
youtube
And so we arrive at the second part of Degicaâs Muv Luv release â Muv Luv Unlimited.
But before we delve deeper into the game, letâs revisit a question from part 1: Should you play all of Muv Luv Extra before venturing into Unlimited? In my opinion: yes. While Meiya and Sumika routes are definitely the most important and worthwhile ones to have seen, there are brief references to things from all routes and endings, and these will make your playthrough of Unlimited all the more enjoyable. I can imagine this is the case in Alternative as well.
As expected, Unlimited is a very different kind of story than Extra. Without getting into how this has come to be, Takeru finds himself in vastly different circumstances, in a world where humanity faces possible extinction at the hands of an alien race known as BETA.
The beginning of the story takes a few steps back, to the part in Extra where Takeru and his friends are at the hot springs, just after the night where Takeru overhears Meiya and Sumika speak of their true feelings for him. With this in mind he is forced to move into a reality where, rather than just wondering how not to hurt to girls closest to him, the more imminent issue is whether he or any of them will even survive. On top of that, someone appears to noticeably missing, with no obvious clue as to what happened.
I enjoyed every bit of Unlimited and how it turns the world and characters of Muv Luv upside down, putting new perspective and pressure on everyone. Especially the main  character, Takeru. In Extra he is an annoying, rude kid, that is eventually forced to realise that he has to move on from his carefree attitude and make a choice to stop hurting those around him. In Unlimited he is a fish out of water struggling with his fear of dying, his desire to regain what was lost, and going through a lot of growth because of this. On top of that there is the whole mystery around the world of Unlimited and the strange little girl Kasumi, a mystery whose answer is hinted at, but never directly answered.
With that in mind had Unlimited stood on its own and ended there, it would have been a terribly unfulfilling experience. The âAlternative Projectâ is vaguely hinted at at first, then brought up again just as the game ends, letting you know that there is so much going on that you never come to learn of. It gives you a feeling of knowing what was going on, and then again, not really. In that regard the end of the game feels abrupt, and very harsh, leaving the reader on a cliffhanger. All in all Unlimited mostly comes off like a prologue to Muv Luv Alternative, teasing of greater things to come. And it does so really well.
Graphics and presentation are very similar to Extra, with added military suits and robots of course. The game continues using the very anime-like style of animated sprites and text shown as coloured subtitles, and I found that this is one of the few VNs I could easily enjoy on auto-read. In most VNs my fast reading and general impatience doesnât allow me to read at anything but my own pace, but perhaps because this felt so much like watching an anime, I did not mind letting it run on its own while listening to the voice actors and watching the sprites move around and perform their hijinks.
I could do without the mostly-naked combat suits, though.
The game even has a few animated sequences, apart from its opening movie. These are brief and used sparingly at particularly tense scenes with moments of action, but are a very nice touch that I hope to see more of in the future.
And so we wait for Alternativeâs official English release, for hopefully more mysterious revelations and twists, and of course, giant robots.
