Sonsoles de Icaza y de León

She was the youngest daughter of the marriage formed by Francisco Asís de Icaza y Beña and Beatriz de León y Loynaz. His father was a Mexican ambassador and renowned poet, and his mother a Spanish aristocratic woman. In 1925, when she was 10 years old, Sonsoles de Icaza lost her father and the family started to have economic problems. Her older sister María del Carmen decided to help the family financially by writing for newspapers and then writing novels which became very popular and was acclaimed as the writer of the year in 1945. 

On 12 February 1936, at the age of 21, Sonsoles married Francisco de Paula Díez de Rivera y Casares, marquis​ of Llanzol, 24 years older than her. They have three children: Francisco, Antonio and Sonsoles. In 1940 Sonsoles began an extramarital relationship with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Francoist regime, Ramón Serrano Suñer, married to the sister of Francisco Franco's wife. In 1942 Sonsoles has an extramarital daughter Carmen Díez de Rivera , who will nevertheless be recognized by her husband as her own; the marriage never separated. Sonsoles and Ramón maintained their relationship for almost two decades, until their daughter announced her engagement with Ramón's youngest son, her half brother. It was then that both discovered the kinship that united them. It almost destroyed her and would mark her profoundly all of her short life. Carmen was an extraordinarily important political figure in the time period when Spain moved from dictatorship to democracy, and was called "the muse of transition". For the writer and journalist Maruja Torres, who also knew her closely, Carmen was "intelligent, cultured, educated, beautiful inside and out, supportive and generous, full of delicacy, a warrior and elegant woman, ironic, sometimes cutting."

Sonsoles de Icaza is considered the most elegant woman of her time in Spain, and great muse and friend of Cristóbal Balenciaga, one of the greatest couturiers in fashion history who not only dressed the marquise of Llanzol and even designed the communion dresses for her daughters.

On 21 January 1996, Sonsoles de Icaza died in Madrid at the age of 81. His daughter Sonsoles Díez de Rivera donated dresses of hers designed by his friend Cristóbal Balenciaga to the Balenciaga Museum .

In 2013, Spanish novelist Nieves Herrrero wrote a novel “Lo que escondían sus ojos” inspired by the love story of Sonsoles de Icaza, which is in turn made into a mini TV series by Telecinco in 2016, with the role of Sonsoles played by actress Blanca Suárez .
