This convinced me to watch "I Was An Adventuress" and I really enjoyed it!

"if I had a nickel for everytime a Peter Lorre character had a dad and also a sister that wasn't actually his dad and sister" I count at least 3 if u count Ferret

Idk where exactly I stand on whatever wilmers whole deal is in the maltese falcon, but rn I like to think he has abandonment issues and felt very unwanted by his parents-and people in general really, as a child and went on to project those issues onto Cairo and gutman. Not that I know of anything in the film or book that particularly supports this headcanon, but I think it would make the whole "I can always get another son" deal at the end suck extra hard for him
#the maltese falcon#joel cairo#kaspar Gutman#wilmer cook#tbf if youve been on my blog enough youve probably gathered that i dont care if my headcanons line up perfectly as long as they dont#directly contradict canon toooo hard#if i hypothetically came up with one that perfectly explained all the unanswered questions to some piece of media then happy days#but fn im just having a gay ol time#also say what you want about the maltese falcon#it has some characters you love to see in complete misery

Sydney Greenstreet. His whole film career took place in the 1940s. Of the 23 films he did, in all but 2 films he was billed no lower than sixth. And he was billed 4th of better in 18 of the 23. That is quite an impressive statistic for a chub actor. That means he had some box office appeal. It helped that his first role was his most famous as Kaspar Gutman in The Maltese Falcon. He was often paired with Peter Lorre in his films and since this was the 1940s, there could only be, at most, sexual ambiguity in the relationship between their two characters.
