Jashn-e-Drugmulla celebrations with J&K youth held in Kupwara
Jashn-e-Drugmulla was celebrated in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Administrator said that looking at the talent present in Drugmulla, I remember the words of former late President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam that when you are inspired by a great purpose then government forces and talent doubles up. When there is a big aim in your heart then your hidden talent comes out. Your inner strength comes out. And that is what is necessary today that we increase our inner strength and take it to new heights. Just as the name suggests: Jashn-e-Drugmulla parwaaz-e-Kashmir. Let us celebrate the new Kashmir along with the people of Drugmulla. Older residents of Drugmulla said there once existed a theatre here but it was shut during tumultuous times. Now after 35 years, with the efforts of the Army and Civil Administration, a theatre programme is being organised. They were happy that the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha is promoting the culture of Kashmir. The youth will be engaged and this will discourage drugs and bad activities, say the elders in Drugmulla. This will keep the youth safe. The G20 event has also encouraged the youth that the tourists will increase, business will flourish in Kashmir and there will be peace. We are grateful to the UT administration and the Army for organising this programme here. There were around 5,000 participants in the Jashn-e-Drugmulla programme. The two-day programme held a lot of games like volleyball, Kho Kho, etc. The youth actively participated in the programme. A lot of changes have been observed in the youth here. Hopefully, there will be a transformation in those who are getting drawn towards drugs, said residents of village Drugmulla.

welcome!
this blog loves planet earth and the people in it.
some notes:
I generally try to identify places + groups
I try to make conscious decisions about tags that respect cultural identities, consider historical context and reject imperialism. I realize this is impossible and messy and doomed to be inconsistent. choices I've made include one Korea, one Ireland, and multiple tags for separatist states, i.e. Scotland, Catalan Countries.
I am currently unsure when or if it makes sense to tag the "bigger" nation in a post about an autonomous region, ex. China and Tibet, Faroe Islands and Denmark. I want to respect widespread independence movements, but also not become bloated with regional tags. Tibet deserves to be free of China but I have to laugh at modern Texas separatism.
Israel does not get a tag. Jewish diaspora, Free Palestine, genocide, USA, or anti imperialism are used.
I am not always sure when to use the indigenous peoples tag. if I am unsure I will probably leave it out.
except the history and prehistory tag, I currently am not tagging things that no longer exist, ex. Soviet Union, Roman Empire. I may instead tag with related tags, ex. Russia, Greece
Tags like EU, UK, Africa, Asia, Latin American, Polynesian, etc. are used in posts that refer to many places/groups collectively ex. Lunar New Year in Asia
I try to tag the country/group that an artist/writer/creator belongs to, ex. a post featuring Baldwin tagged with USA, literature, black diaspora
tags are ever-evolving!
country/place tags:
Africa, Albania, Angolia, Argentina, Armenia, Asia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Canada, Catalan Countries, Central African Republic, Chad, Chile, China, Colombia, Congo, Cuba, Czechia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Emirates, Estonia, Ethiopia, EU, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Guatemala, Haiti, Hawai'i, Hungary, Iberia, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Korea, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Niger, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Norway, Pakistan, free Palestine, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, free Tibet, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, USA, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Wales, West Papau, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Electric Sufi - Breathe In Love
This is Breathe in Love, the new album by Electric Sufi. A first single 'O Ignis Spiritus' will be released on 1 February 2023, the album will be released later that year.
Electric Sufi are Sheffield based Professor of Music and Sound Archaeologist at Huddersfield University Rupert Till, Manchester based singer-songwriter and environmental activist Sarah Yaseen and Nottingham based multi-instrumentalist / University lecturer Mina Mikhael Salama.
Rupert has produced ambient dance, chillout and electronic music under the the moniker Professor Chill throughout his career, including the album Dub Archaeology released in 2018. He’s also written the book Pop Cult which delves into the mysteries of music and spirituality, participated in the BBC TV series Civilisations as well as numerous other TV and radio shows, plus written articles in The Quietus, Huffington Post and New Scientist. His extensive research projects have been wide and varied, covering a multitude of subjects ranging from ‘The influences of Religion on British Club Culture and Electronic Dance music’ to ‘Sound Archaeology, Acoustics and Cave Art’.
Sarah, whose family roots are in Kashmir, is known in world music circles as a singer in UK Womad favourites Rafiki Jazz and Danish all-woman ensemble Radiant Arcadia. In Electric Sufi she sings in Urdu, Punjabi, Persian, Latin and English – and by doing so, draws upon a wide range of cultural influences. Inspired by Qawwali (Islamic devotional singing from India) and Ghazals (Arabic poetry), she has one foot firmly placed in a contemporary multicultural world and the other in the ancient lyrical and musical traditions on which she draws.
Mina, a Coptic Christian from Alexandria, Egypt, came to the UK as a refugee, taking asylum here from persecution in his homeland. He has since contributed much to UK culture through his performances at WOMAD, Edinburgh Festival, The Southbank, London as well as Cardiff, Leicester, Manchester and beyond. Along with Rupert, Mina has also contributed to the BBC TV series Civilisations where he demonstrated a 30,000-year-old Isturitz Vulture bone flute. On an international level, Mina has contributed to the music score on Disney’s Aladdin, directed by Guy Richie and starring Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott.
With a first performance at Bradford’s Kala Sangam Arts Centre, which received much applause from a diverse audience, this trio brings much collectively and individually to the Electric Sufi sound, resulting in a rich tapestry of cultural and musical layers of influence that their album Breathe In Love explores in much detail. Their modern interpretation of O Ignis Spiritus is a wonderful introduction to this enchanted world and their message of hope.

Fake It 'til You Make It
As I shared recently with my dear friend Claire: as a Fulbrighter, one is often asked to do things one is completely unqualified to do. There’s really nothing for it but to say “yes” and dive in. My most recent example of this: I was invited by Preeti Gill, the founder of Majha House here in Amritsar, to moderate a discussion about two books on Partition for a literary festival held this past weekend focused on the 75th anniversary of Indian independence. (Majha House is a new cultural center here in Amritsar that sponsors lectures, performances, and exhibits in a beautifully renovated home.) I’m a passionate reader, but I was intimidated by this task. Claire, who has lots of experience both as an interviewer and interviewee, gave me some pointers, and calmed my anxiety.I plunged into the books: the first two parts of a Partition trilogy written by Manreet Sodhi Singh. The books are deeply researched historical fictions. The first, “Lahore” explores the time leading up to Partition in that city and in Delhi, where the departing British government and the newly formed Indian government tried unsuccessfully to avoid impending disaster. The second book, “Hyderabad”, deals with a chapter of the subcontinent’s history I knew nothing about: the struggles and terrible violence that surrounded the fate of that city in the months after independence. I enjoyed both books very much: both for the historical detail and the compelling human stories that Manreet wove into each. I can’t wait for the final book of the trilogy, “Kashmir”, to be released in September. We attended a lovely kick-off dinner for the festival at Majha House on Saturday evening and met many interesting international writers, scholars, and lovers of the arts. The next morning, the festival was held at Hindu University (one of the oldest colleges in the city.) The opening lecture was by renowned journalist Palagummi Sainath. The lecture lasted nearly an hour, and we were thoroughly captivated from beginning to end. This guy didn’t pull any punches, and it was refreshing to hear such an honest assessment of Indian and global politics. He started the lecture by reminding us that everything we would talk about that day traces back to the colonization of India by the British. He shared that recently he’s been troubled by some Indians who say “Oh, the British weren’t that bad.”—comparing them to other colonizers that might have been worse. His response: “Choosing between colonizers is like the chicken choosing which sauce it wants to be cooked in.” (I found myself thinking about the Americans who, only two years later, remark that January 6 was not really that big a deal.) My session came next, and while I was nervous and overprepared—it went off just fine. This was due in large part to the author, Manreet, who was warm, generous, funny, and needed little prompting to talk about her books and the history of Partition. David and I finished the day with a stack of books and some new friends that we hope we’ll see more of in the future. While people here have been very nice and welcoming to us—we crave social interaction and conversation with someone besides each other!
Above: I got a gorgeous hand-embroidered scarf in the deal!
Lunch on the grounds of Hindu University.

Ladakh is a region in the northernmost part of India, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is renowned for its stunning landscapes, high-altitude mountain passes, ancient monasteries, and unique cultural heritage.
Here is some information about Ladakh:
Geographical Location: Ladakh is situated in the Indian Himalayas, bordered by Pakistan to the west and China to the east. It is nestled between the Karakoram and Great Himalayan mountain ranges.
Capital: The capital of Ladakh is Leh, which is located at an altitude of around 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) above sea level. Leh serves as the administrative and cultural center of the region.
Landscapes: Ladakh is known for its breathtaking landscapes, including rugged mountains, vast barren valleys, deep gorges, and crystal-clear lakes. The region is often referred to as the "Land of High Passes" due to its numerous mountain passes, such as Khardung La and Chang La, which offer spectacular views.
Buddhist Influence: Ladakh has a strong Buddhist influence, with numerous ancient monasteries scattered across the region. These monasteries, such as Hemis, Thiksey, and Alchi, are not only religious centers but also architectural marvels, showcasing intricate artwork and valuable Buddhist relics.
Adventure Tourism: Ladakh attracts adventure enthusiasts from around the world. It offers various thrilling activities, including trekking, mountaineering, river rafting, and biking. The challenging terrain and high-altitude passes provide opportunities for adrenaline-pumping adventures.
Festivals: Ladakh celebrates several vibrant festivals that showcase the region's cultural traditions. The most famous festival is the Hemis Festival, held at Hemis Monastery, featuring colorful masked dances, music, and rituals. Other notable festivals include Losar (Tibetan New Year) and Dosmoche.
Local Cuisine: Ladakhi cuisine is influenced by Tibetan and Central Asian flavors. Popular dishes include Thukpa (noodle soup), Momos (steamed dumplings), Skyu (a hearty stew), and Butter Tea. The cuisine often incorporates locally grown barley, wheat, vegetables, and dairy products.
Climate: Ladakh experiences a cold desert climate due to its high altitude. Summers (June to September) are mild with pleasant daytime temperatures, while winters (October to april) are extremely cold, and many areas become inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
Accessibility: Ladakh can be accessed by road and air. Major Indian cities are connected to the region by the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. The two primary highways that link Ladakh to the rest of the nation are the Leh-Manali Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway.
Inner Line Permit: To access some restricted regions in Ladakh, visitors who are not nationals or residents of India must get an Inner Line Permit (ILP). The Leh government's authority or authorized travel agencies can provide the permit.
