Emberwilde Djinn
Emberwilde djinn is somewhat interesting. It is an undercosted flyer in red that is not a dragon. Red does not get that often and something is telling me that the djinn creature type might get support when we return to tarkir. This card is from mirage though and although we get creatures of these stats in all colors back in the day this card had to come with a drawback. Magic the Gathering is a game with almost 30,000 cards and drawbacks are really advantages that you have to use synergy to produce. So, what decks have a want for a card that can switch control. You might immediately think Karona, false god or zedruu or kharn the betrayer. Any deck that benefits from donating permanents or wants to switch permanents may take a look at this guy. I especially like it in a deck that focuses on switching control of things because you can pay the mana or the 2 life to get your djinn back and then donate it all over again. This card is also decent in a goad deck. Giving your opponent a 5 power flyer but knowing that damage is not going toward you is pretty strong when. If you can give him vigilance or untap him during each turn then this card can attack 4 times in one turn sequence. That damage adds up fast and this card has evasion! This card has limited and niche use but donating is a strategy that gets a card here and there every couple of sets. Its a somewhat popular strategy in commander so I can see more commanders built on this premise. I was surprised that this card does not see more play in Blim comedic genius commander decks. You can either use the commander's ability to force emberwilde djinn to your opponent or your opponent may choose to take it but that would only fuel blim's ability. I feel like this card would see a little more play but not many people know it even exists. That is strange to me as the average person can not identify these bulk reserved list cards. That is part of the reason to look at each one individually and study it from the lens of 2024. Why do even expert mtg players not know a majority of the cards on the reserved list? Are these cards doomed to be forgotten? People who do not believe in the pedigree of the reserved list believe that cards like this have no value despite their age and remaining quantity. Am I preserving a history that just does not matter? I do not think so. I believe that when the game turns fifty years old the reserved list as a whole will spike again. In twenty years the number of reserved list cards will have shrunk but the number of unique cards in the game will have skyrocketed. Niche reserved list cards, like this, may find multiple homes or even one specific home in which it is the lynchpin of a deck. What will the quantity of the reserved list look like in the year 2045? Will even slight demand cause cards to become unobtainably expensive because there is no supply? After all, if no one knows or cares about a card like emberwilde djinn than copies will be lost. This card is not being preserved and my goal is to change that. Reblog and save these reserved list bulk cards from being lost to time. Buyouts have happened before and they will happen again. The culture, economy, and overall zeitgeist is not favorable to older cards in the moment but nostalgia sells. Eventually, through true demand, or through hoarding, or fire, or simply the reality that time destroys all things, the reserved list will shrink. My estimate is that in twenty years over half of the currently bulk reserved list will be above bulk. By that, I mean above 5 dollars for a near mint copy. This is not financial advice but if a reserved list card spiked in the next twenty years and I can make a 10,000 dollar profit or more selling off all excess copies above a playset I probably would. However, I will always keep at least one copy of each reserved list card no matter the price. I want the cards. I want to hold history in many hand. The reserved list is not a means to make money for me, although I may choose to profit off the market, but a game that I love.

Whoa, a Tumblr post!
It's Been a While... 🥺👉👈
First -- I will be making weekly updates from now on! The vast majority of these updates will be operating as kind of an art digest, including photos of any textured cards I've finished in the past week, plus any progress I've made on 3D projects. Here's a bunch!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll also be adding some text updates to any long-term projects as well. I'll keep this section brief, though, since I think the major reason my weekly updates failed last time was because I just struggled to write so much about my own work 😅 I'm not the best with words, so don't expect much better than a stream-of-consciousness style update here!
Project Updates
Borborygmos Engraved: This is a personal passion project of mine, and the goal is to 100% foil out my Borborygmos Enraged commander deck and then texture every single card in it. I've made some major progress on it over the past year and a half or so since I started, and as of this week I can officially say that the project is 85% complete! 100% of the deck is now foiled out, and 70% of the deck is fully textured. Once the deck is completely finished, I'll have images and video of the full thing for you to enjoy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Birds & Flowers Greeting Card: This project is a gift for my mother, whose birthday is coming up very soon. I likely won't be able to finish it in time, but I still want to keep updates coming until it's done.
Tumblr media
Karona, the False God: FINALLY, I have updates for this project (though no images yet)! I was finally able to get in touch with a local woodworker and craftsman who will be able to design the automatic gearbox life counter that I've been prototyping for over 3 years now. It's been SUCH a slow process, but we might actually have a working finished product before this spring! I'll be updating you with more info as it comes.
More to Come!
If you have any ideas of what you'd like to see from me here, I'd love to hear them!

My favorite Magic deck that I ever made was an EDH/Commander deck that I called “Just Fucking Chaos.” The commander was Karona, False God so I could use all 5 colors. And I had all the weird shit in there (kitchen table so nothing was banned): Warp World, Goblin Game, Sway of the Stars, Chaos Moon, Naked Singularity, One With Nothing, every card I could find that either fucked with the board state as much as possible or was like “why does this exist?” Also, it had no basic land in it—only what my play group used to call “silly lands.”
It rarely won games, but it always made them more interesting.

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #678: Temple of the False God
Tumblr media
Temple of the False God is an uncommon from Scourge, seen here in some Commander product.
Considering how briefly Karona, the False God was alive, they sure did build this thing quickly! This land promises good land ramp, but only if you were already pretty well set on mana already. I mean, 5 to 7 is not BAD ramp, but it's not as exciting as you'd expect if Maro teased "a land that taps for 2 mana and enters the field untapped".
I see this as kind of like the False God herself, something which SOUNDS good, but is in practice just kinda impractical. I guess this thing is good in Commander, the format where everyone just kinda wants to start the game on 7 mana anyhow.

The Lore of Commander Legends: Akroma, Vision of Ixidor
Tumblr media
“When the illusionist Ixidor's greatest love, Nivea, was slain in a pit fight with Phage the Untouchable, Ixidor's grief caused his powers to increase immeasurably. He could turn his dreams into reality; he could even create living creatures. Ixidor's greatest creation was Akroma, a battle angel made in Nivea's image to avenge her death by killing Phage.
When Ixidor was swallowed by a tremendous deathwurm, Akroma didn't hesitate. Diving down the monster's gullet, she waded through its digestive juices to reach her creator. Ixidor bade her to leave him, and Akroma's followers replaced her ruined legs with metal lances. In the end, Akroma and Phage (and the muleskinner Zagorka) died at the same moment, slain by Kamahl's axe-stroke, combining them together into the form of Karona, the False God.”

"Akroma is one of the most famous figures of The Mirari Conjecture, even though she did not appear until a little before the Legion Wars. She was created in a dream by Ixidor, (who had become Lowalyn's Avatar, the Numena Mage who long ago banished Dromar) using his literal right arm. Her name means "without color", named as she appears like his lost love Nivea but devoid of the color of her life."
"Her purpose was to slay the former Pardic Barabrian and sister to Kamahl Jeska who had been turned into an Avatar of Death by the Cabal and taken the name Phage. Phage had killed Nivea in a pit fight against Ixidor. Even after Ixidor's apparent death, Akroma sought to complete her master's vengeance and her clash with Phage let to the rebirth of Karona, the False God and embodiment of Dominaria's Magic."
"This is vastly abridged information as Akroma's life was nothing but 3 years of continent wide conflict. If you seek more on Akroma, I suggest looking into the Novels of Onslaught and Legions." -Umbral the Archivist

You are not meant to pay the upkeep cost on this card. This card is barely above rate in terms of stats and in 2024 stats barely mean a thing. Paying 2 mana to keep this then 4 mana, etc, etc. is just not viable. You could use cards to remove the counter for a benefit but you are jumping through hoops for a 3 power flyer. If there are ever other wage counter cards and you can pay wage counters for other effects then we can take a second look at this card. Until then, this card will be relegated to donate decks or decks that want to shift control of cards to the opponent. You could play this card in Blim comedic genius, zedruu, or karona false god and not be completely embarrassed. People will at least understand your choice even if is not optimal, ideal, or efficient. I think the number of donate commanders will increase over time but so will the number and power level of cards that shuft control. This card will eventually be obsolete and that is being generous as you really should not be playing this card even now. Even the fact that mercenary just got outlaw support in thunder junction is not enough to move the needle on this card.

Strategy Showcase: Group Hugs
Tumblr media
When playing Magic: the Gathering, or any other game for that matter, the goal should be to have fun. Sure, winning is great, but unless you are playing in a hyper competitive meta, enjoying the game is going be of paramount importance. What better way to have fun than to make sure everyone is having a good time? The strategy known as “Group Hugs” is one of the most basic to understand, but difficult to master strategies in all of Magic: the Gathering. That being said, it is one of my favorites, so today, let’s explore this strateigy and some of the best ways to support it in Commander.
Tumblr media
So, a quick explanation of Group Hugs: Play cards that benefit everyone at the table thus to make yourself an ally to all other players. Generally speaking, other players won’t inflict unnecessary harm on you so long as you are providing them with something that they need. Because of this, there are not that many ways to actually finish the game in 1st, playing for 2nd is something that people tend to think when it comes to Group Hugs. However, there are ways to win. Outlasting your opponents’ struggles and winning through political maneuvering is generally the best way to try to not only stay alive, but come out on top.
Tumblr media
Let’s look at some of the Commanders for this strategy. Kynaios & Tiro were made to helm Group Hug decks. With huge toughness and an ability that benefits everyone at the table, plus access to four colors, this power couple is perfect. Since they have Red, unlike most of the commanders on this list, you get access to cards like Insurrection, which takes everything everyone has been working for and makes it yours for one turn. One of the best finishers in any group hug deck that can run it. I had this deck for a really long time and only took it apart to support the next commander on this list, Angus Mackenzie.
Tumblr media
I’ll get this out of the way, Angus Mackenzie is EXPENSIVE. But if you are a collector or happen to have one laying around from your childhood days of Magic, it can be built as an effective pillowfort-hugs commander. Pillowfort, if you are unfamiliar, is another strategy that goes hand in hand with group hugs. Basically you make it really difficult for your opponents to interact with you through the use of protective cards like Propaganda and Damage prevention effects. Both of these are essential to the survival of group hugs decks, and with Angus’ ability to negate combat, he can protect you from any attacks while you sit back and try to help everyone.
Tumblr media
If you want to use another Bant commander, that doesn’t cost upwards of $200, I suggest Phelddagrif. This purple hippo is the quintessential group hugs commander, everything it does benefits your opponents in some way or another. Winning with Phelddagrif is going to be more of a challenge than with almost any other commander on this list. That being said, remember, in Group Hugs, winning is not your primary goal, your goal is to have fun!
Tumblr media
The last commander I want to mention is Karona, the False God. She gives you access to all five colors and yes, there are group hug cards in black. Karona will float around the table every turn and give people access to a commander that can be used as an offensive threat. Certainly, a more offensive take one the hugs strategy, but it is Karona’s uniqueness that is alluring to someone looking to build a group hug deck that can actually get Kos with its commander.
There are a plethora of cards throughout Magic’s history which work well in group hug decks. Luckily, someone put together a list of them, so feel free to check then out if you wish! (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mh-group-hug/). I want to highlight some of the more important cards and a couple that tend to get overlooked.
Tumblr media
Rites of Flourishing is maybe the best group hugs card in all of Magic. It only costs three mana and allows each player to draw an additional land on top of giving all players an extra draw. Ghirapur Orrery is very similar in how it interacts with the table. Throw in a Horn of Greed and players can draw after they play their lands. If you want to just directly give everyone land, New Frontiers, Traverse the Outlands and Collective Voyage are all excellent choices. For more extra draws, look for Howling Mine, Temple Bell, Jace Beleren and Font of Mythos. Anvil of Bogarden is also fantastic, as it gives an additional draw, plus no maximum hand size for all players. Of course, Prosperity and Skyscribing can get you wins if you force mass draw on the table.
Tumblr media
Aside from additional land drops and draws, there are other ways to benefit everyone at the board. Homeward Path os a land that will give everyone their things back, so it can help if you are in a meta or game where someone likes to steal your cards. Hunted Wumpus allows all of your opponents to put any creature from their hand into play. Charmed Griffin does the same thing, except for an artifact or enchantment. If you want to give everyone a chance to tutor for any card they want, Noble Benefactor is a card that exists. However, if you have the desire to lean completely into the hugs aspect and throw all caution to the wind, Tempting Wurm is a two drop that will allow all of your opponents to dump their hands onto the field.
Tumblr media
There are a few overlooked cards that I would like to examine before I wrap up this already long article. The three Bant colored “oath” cards are great. Scholars, Lieges and Druids all greatly benefit the table as a whole. Nullmage Advocate and the other advocates all have different effects that give a player of your choice card advantage in one way or another, but as a trade off, deal with threats, raise your creatures, etc. Horn of Plenty, Well of Knowledge and Unified Theory all give players the choice to pay additional mana while casting spells or drawing cards to draw even more cards! This can also be helpful in slowing down your opponents, as sometimes, they really need to draw “that card” and pump out extra mana, leaving you and other players open to cast spells without fear of an immediate response.
Tumblr media
I could honestly write even more about this archetype, but I feel I have made my point. Group Hugs is one of my favorite styles to play in all of Magic: the Gathering. The sheer versatility and volume of unique cards is what has always been so great about this game to me and this format in particular. No matter how you want to play the game, there are cards that exist to support that endeavor and foster a rich and uniquely interactive play experience.

Ignoring logistics and "You'd miss out on X", if you were to build a Jund Zombies EDH deck, what general would you use? Or maybe a top 3?
That's an interesting question. Right off the bat none of the available options are zombies which leaves one of two directions, something that synergizes with the goal of the deck, or something that generates value.Without knowing the details of your list I'd say Gyrus and Waistora could be potential commanders. From a value perspective, I like the idea of sacrificing tokens to shatter gang (my favorite option). Flavor wise maybe Sek'Kuar.Personally I recommend Karona, the False God, and then just don't play white or blue. While you lose out on some format staples, like a commander, you get the enriching experience of looking at Karona.
