Fandom’s 5 Feel Good Anime to Watch This Week

I think we’re all in need of a pick me up this week, don’t you?

And what better way to get that feel good feeling than to watch some nice anime with uplifting stories and fantastic characters? I thought hard about it, and decided to recommend these five for you all today. All of these have made me feel a surge of warmth and happiness by the end of their runs, and I think among these titles, you’ll find something that might be to your liking. 

Keep in mind, some of these do cover heavy topics, so check out the content warnings on the series before you sit down to watch. 

And with that, let’s not beat around the bush. Here’s 5 Feel Good Anime to Watch this week!

1) School Rumble

Tenma’s calm and caring sister Yakumo and Tenma’s rich best friend Eri like the school delinquent Harima. Harima likes the airheaded Tenma. Tenma likes everyday nice guy Karasuma. Karasuma likes curry. Just curry. Then there’s class rep Hanai who likes Yakumo, but Harima thinks he likes Tenma and sees him as a rival. Tea Club president and Tenma’s mysterious friend Akira dislikes Hanai. And this just the tip of the romance shenanigan iceberg. As everyone tries their best to get through school, reach their goals, and confess their love, anything and everything can and will go wrong. But sometimes, it’s all for the better. 

Probably the oldest anime on this list having come out in the early to mid-2000′s, and has some jokes that haven’t aged very well, but it’s a comedy I seriously enjoyed when I first watched it. The comedy is in a similar vein to that of Azumanga Daioh and Nichijou, with over the top hijinks, fun references to other anime and real life troubles, and the way characters are interconnected are fun to try to keep track of. Definitely a good comedy series to check out if you haven’t yet.  

2) Hinamatsuri

Yoshifumi Nitta is a mid-level member of the yakuza, whose life is torn asunder by the arrival of Hina, a psychic girl from the future whose time travel pod landed on his head. After she threatens to destroy all his furniture, Nitta takes her in and adopts her as his own. As dangers from their lives come about, Hina and Nitta do their best to try to live together and learn what it means to be a family. 

When I first heard the premise, I was immediately curious. And in between the laughs, this anime had me in tears at how emotional it could be at times. The themes of found family and finding your place in such a crazy world resonated very strongly with me and I highly recommend checking this series out when you have the time. 

3) The Troubled Life of Kotoura-san

Haruka Kotoura has always had the ability to read people’s minds, but because of this, leads an incredibly lonely life, as her power tends to push those closest to her away. That all changes when she begins high school and meets Yoshihisa Manabe, who is completely unfased by her abilities. Together they join the ESP Research club and become friends with Club President Yuriko Mifune, her childhood friend Daichi Muroto, and fellow classmate and Manabe’s friend Hiyori Moritani. 

This one is definitely the darkest of my suggestions as it deals with many heavy subjects from bullying to childhood abandonment and some even more serious topics, but it manages to balance the darker subjects, comedy, and a story about found family and sticking by those who truly care about you incredibly well. It honestly impressed me with how heartwarming this series could be. Just be sure to check the warnings on this one and proceed with caution if you decide to check it out.

4) Shonen Maid

Despite growing up poor, Chihiro Komiya lived a relatively happy life with his mother, who taught him how to take care of chores and the value of working hard for yourself. After his mother passes away, Chihiro is left with nowhere to go. That is, until his wealthy long lost uncle Madoka Takatori decides to take him in. Upon moving into the mansion with him and seeing it in a complete mess, Chihiro employs himself as a maid, tending to the house in exchange for an allowance. As Chihiro and Madoka learn more about each other, Madoka learns the importance of taking care of yourself and the responsibility of being a parent, and Chihiro learns that sometimes it’s okay to let go and just to be a kid. 

When I first read the premise of this show, I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. But this was a pleasant surprise for sure and I’m glad I stuck through it. The way everything from the family’s past and estrangement builds on each other and how his mother’s values influenced Chihiro’s dreams of the future were something that resonated deeply with me, and seeing how Chihiro and Madoka learn and grow together brought a smile to my face. This was one of the most surprising titles to cross my path, but I have to say it certainly swept me off my feet. 

5) Flying Witch

Makoto Kowata is a young witch from Yokohama, who moves in with some distant relatives in Aomori to continue her training. As she reconnects with her family and interacts with the people and supernatural in Hirosaki, Makoto’s life slowly goes from calm and peaceful to exciting and adventurous. At least, as adventurous as learning to tend a garden and collecting herbs from the wild can be. Sometimes the best kind of magic is the friendships we make along the way. 

This one I recently completed and it was just the right level of sweet slice of life shenanigans and interesting magical fantasy I needed. It has a tone very similar to that of Kiki’s Delivery Service, so if you enjoyed that movie any amount, I say this one is right up your alley. A calm atmosphere, fun characters, and delightful visuals makes this one a show that will put you at ease and feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
