She hated running late to things at the best of times, but when Kara had found herself running late to pick up Saira from kindergarten. Fortunately, her daughter’s teacher was quite an amazing woman and a quick phone call was all it had taken to put her mind at ease. So when she finally showed up at the front gate, she saw the teacher stood there with Saira ready to go. 

“Sweetheart, I’m so sorry.” Kara knelt down in front of the five year old, wrapping her arms around her and kissing her cheek. “Mummy is going to make it up to you. Promise.” She then stood and offered a grateful smile to the other woman. “Thank you so much. I’m so sorry to have kept you here, today has just been horrendous.”

It had been nothing more than a joke, a drunken choice if you will, to swipe right on them when she had come across their profile on her phone. That had been a little over a week ago, and she had pretty much forgotten about the decision. However, as Kara lay on the sofa, flicking through the various films that Netflix had to offer, her phone buzzed and lit up with a notification of a new match. 

“Holy shit...” As she looked at the profile that had matched with her, Kara couldn’t quite believe what she was seeing, realising that she wasn’t the only one who was interested. Feeling a little bold, she pulled up a new message on the app and began to type. 

Kara: So I have to say, this a pleasant surprise.

She couldn’t believe that he was there. She knew that he was friends with Grace too, but this was beyond ridiculous. He knew she would have been there and now he was all over some other woman when he knew she could see him. What a dick. Approaching the nearest person who looked like they could help, she slid up in front of them with a smile on her face. 

“Hey, I know we’ve never met, but my twat of an ex is over there and I’m in the mood to make him regret giving up on me, so do you mind acting like you’re flirting with me or something? I’ll buy you all the drinks you want.”

He was simply charming. Kara had fallen for him quite instantly when they first met, with his kind and welcoming demeanour and his friendly smile. The dates they had been on so far had all been fantastic - lovely meals in quirky little restaurants, bowling, arcades, walks along the waterfront... Some she chose, some he did, and every one of them left her with joy taking over every part of her body. 

She wondered who he was beyond what he had told her so far. Not to mention what he saw in her, a quiet, regular mechanic with an obsession for horses. But as she heard the doorbell ringing for their next adventure, she didn’t think more on it and simply moved through her home to answer it.

Kara always hated it when Neel invited her over. Not because she didn’t like the older woman, far from it (she was a good friend for her brother and that had Kara feeling grateful). No, she hated it because that woman was beautiful and made it so hard to resist. Those eyes, that smile, that laugh... She was perfect and she hated it. 

After dinner was done, she took herself out onto the back veranda, looking out over the dark garden and breathing in the fresh air. It was a lovely night, perfect for star gazing, and she was lost in thought when she heard the patio door open up. 

“Oh-” Kara faltered a little when she saw her there. “Hey. Sorry, was in my own little world.”

She was in the middle of the finishing touches on the last customer’s car when she heard the little bell over the door ringing as it opened up. 

“I’ll be with you in a moment! Help yourself to the sweets!” she called out, referring to the glass bowl of treats that her and her brother decided to put out for their customers. Standing up straight and getting out of the car’s engine, Kara wiped her hands on the rag tucked into her belt before emerging from the workshop with a friendly smile.

“How can I help you?”

They never chose the same hotel twice for the sake of their safety. Kara knew what they had been doing was wrong, knew that she would hate to be in his partner’s shoes right now, but he was so miserable with them. Every time they met in secret, he would promise he would leave them, but so far, he hadn’t made that leap. Of course, she tried to be understanding, tried to appreciate how hard it would be for him to leave a long-term marriage like this, but she was getting impatient. 

And with the latest development, things were about to get a whole lot more complicated. As the door to the rather fancy hotel room opened up, she saw him waiting inside for her and allowed him to tug her through. Her back hit the door as soon as it was closed and she felt lips on her own, however she quickly cut the kiss short to meet his gaze. 

“I need to tell you something.” Kara began, staring into his eyes with her fingers still wrapped in his shirt. “Something important, and it can’t wait.” Her heart was pounding against her chest as she went over her rehearsed line in her head until the words just tumbled from her lips. “Babe, I’m pregnant...”

Kara was caught up underneath the engine of a car when she heard footsteps entering the shop, her eyes darting to see a pair of legs approaching. 

“I’ll be with you in just a second.” she called out, finishing up what she was doing before emerging from her spot, only to see a horrifyingly familiar face standing over her. Her hair was currently messy, a few strands stuck to her forehead thanks to the heat, and there was a large smudge of grease on her cheek; it was by far the exact opposite to how he had seen her that night. “Shit... I mean- hi.”
