KAPPELA
INTRODUCTION
Here I'm going to talk about a wonderful movie that had an unfortunate theaterical release that came to an hault due to the harsh reality of COVID 19, is the Malayalam movie "KAPPELA". Directed by "MUHAMMAD MUSTHAFA"
With leading roles played by ROSHAN MATHEW, ANNA BEN actress who has proved her worth through the roles she portrayed in films like kumbalangi nights and Helen. I wonder how can someone who has watched these movies, still be not a fan of her 's .
Last but but not the least SREENATH BHASI, who I absolutely loved in films like Virus and left a lasting impact even with his brief role in Trance.
KAPPELA is Muhammad Musthafa's first directorial venture. An individual who has been working as an actor in malayalam film industry since 2010.
REVIEW MAIN
The story features JESSIE, character played by Anna Ben who lives a modest life with her family in country side, who depends mainly on farming and tailoring for their daily living.
How fate leads to two people connecting over the phone in the form of Jessie and VISHNU( played by Roshan Mathew) an autorikshaw driver. Eventually falling in love without even seeing one another. Due to many situations in her life feeling cornered Jessie decides finally to unite with Vishnu. What follows is many roadblocks and impediments in their flowery affair.
Now comes the entry of our third lead making his presence felt is Sreenath Bhasi's character ROY. How story develops from here is basically the premise of KAPPELA.
TRUST ME you have no idea, about the roller coaster ride this film is going to take you on but it definitely will be something you'll want to continue on.
THE EXCELLENCY OF TECHNICALITY
What is to be specially spoken about is the impeccable and amazing screenplay written by MUHAMMAD MUSTHAFA, NIKHIL WAHID and editing by NOUFAL ABDULLAH.
The movie has a skilled way of presenting us the characters & their state through different timeline and retrace the path how each one of them reach their particular situation.
Focusing initially on the key decisions taken by them and then skillfully through editing and sound effects transports us to the journey they have traveled through.
There is a perfect way in which this film has been written and edited in connecting characters that are living in a parallel way but seem to cross the paths with one another. While executing such a technical aspect with ease, many scenes in movie take you through the brilliance of editing and tansitions which you must watch and experience.
The beautiful songs of the film presents no choreography but everything in it functions to the beats of songs changing frame at count of every 4 or 8.
The technical features of this movie stand out and stay with you.
CHARACTER BUILDING
The facinating feature of kappela is the attention to details of characters and their surroundings, the social implications that come with it.
For example the conservative and rigid social background of Jessie. Women being scared about the judgemental eyes of public.
Men ready to go to any level to prove       themselves as perfect groom.
Economic differences, female expression, where their merry and independent expression in itself can causr pandemonium. Where as men bring and create merry. Women are hesitent to laugh freely
Film shows the contrast between lives in city and country side. The first being free, independent and a breath of fresh air in terms of individuality.
This film has the ability to captivate you and make you feel as if you are a part of it, through its framing and performances it genuinely makes you feel like a part of that world.
JESSIE  an ordinary girl who wants nothing but a simple and joyful life, when her fate is to connect her with VISHNU an autorickshaw driver whom she has never met all that she wants is to see him and experience the view of sea in the city of Kozhikode
Both ANNA BEN and ROSHAN MATHEW share an infectious chemistry that throughout the film, I felt like a third wheel eves dropping in their life. These 2 actors must be truely appreciated for their magnetic chemistry over the phone. Which some actors even after sharing the frame are not able to convey even a fraction of it.
Now coming to ROY ( played by SREENATH BHASI) acts as a catalyst to the changing theme of movie. The change that does not appear abruptly but comes across as extremely probable which makes the experience of viewing it extremely horrifying. He is a stud, mysterious, no nonsense doer.
WINNING POINTS.
This film will make you want the leads Jessie and Vishnu to be together, it will make you pray for their union wanting no roadblocks in their journey and this is where the movie wins because it makes you develope love and empathy for the characters that you feel drawned to.
Film with no doubts makes you believe whole heartedly these characters and their moral representations.
CONCLUSION
It says so much about effective story telling.
Real characters, people that you'll see in a crowd. We have been always fed with this flowery image of what romance should be, which actually never happens in real life. While this movie translates you through the realistic moments, being a girl one such scene I have lived through is the moment when Jessie holds on to Vishnu's fabric so.as to feel protected. Intricate details with every scene and sequence enhances the beauty. I highly recommend this film to all those movie lovers out there…..
I'm specifying no negatives here, this spoiler free review is for you guys to go ahead and watch this movie. Rest all judgment and decisions is upon you...
