Otake began training as a painter when he was only five years old, studying the brush styles of famous Nanga-school painters. As a teenager he relocated from rural northeast Japan to cosmopolitan Kyoto, where he shifted his attention to the Japanese painting and woodblock print tradition called ukiyo-e and, in the early 1900s, was briefly among the most popular painters active in the city. Craft Chat: Fiber Projects for July

July is upon us -just a week away!- and in Japan, that’s one of the two hottest months of the year. After the rainy season, the country turns unrelentingly hot and humid, often driving the interior temperatures up to 30 C /  86 F before we’re allowed to use aircon, which can be uncomfortable in a humid place. 

Thankfully, all of my schools have aircons installed: last year, two of my high schools didn’t, and the classrooms were routinely 35 C / 95 F inside, even with pedestal fans. Now, the students won’t be as at risk during the day, and can leave feeling a bit more refreshed.

That being said, I’ll be spending a lot of time inside where I can, largely to beat the heat, with more of my activities being early in the day or later in the evening once the sun is behind the moutnains. To keep busy, I’ll be picking up some new cross stitch patterns from Etsy. Here’s my picks:

In addition, if I have time, I’ll be making a set of the Kanto and Johto pokemon badges using deviantART user ‘s free patterns. I think I’ll be making these on plastic canvas so I can eventually put them on my backpack!

(Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of work with Pokemon, which has been really fun. I’m glad I’m continueing to do more Poké-themed pieces.)

I’ll also be dipping into more felt embroidery. I thnk I might try my hand at doing some of the Gen 1 pokemon. I’m going to do a bit more research and also watch some tutorials and see if I can start to refine my felt designs and make some cleaner, more professional looking pieces.

Oh, and I’ll be working on a simple red and blue sashiko print featuring Teru Teru Bozu, one of my favorite things to make, especially in Summer . I might pick up some fabric from the 100-yen store and make a cute bozu to hand up in my apartment or above my desk at work.

Continuations

I’ll be continueing stitchynova’s Pastel Handheld Sampler and their Pokéball Sampler. I’ll be starting them this week, but I don’t plan on them being finished within June.

Also, I’ll be picking up my Floral Profusion embroidery piece from Studio MME with hopes of finishing it and framing it by the end of the month. If I have time this month, I’m going to start in on some of my Super Stitcher Club packages that I haven’t opened yet. There’s always so many really cute designs, and they’re all calling to me!

Ect.

Additionally, I’m going to start outlining the patterns and details for my Poké Haori jacket that I mentioned a week ago. I’ve got a lot of work ahead with just deciding how to design all the elements and if I want to go Regular or Shiny. It’s all exciting work, however, so I’m really, really looking forward to this planning!

All in all, it’s going to be another wonderfully crafty month.
