But the little details can be difficult unless you have antique stores nearby.”

You can do what a lot of people in the UK, including designers like Ben Pentreath, do – throw a blanket or piece of fabric over the sofa. Start with a basic solid color, and then find a kantha quilt or some such, to put over the back. Also, try to find sofa with slipcovers, which is very English : ) .

The original bottom and back cushions are green, but I swapped out the back cushions for large PB pillows like this,

And you can get gorgeous pillows for your sofas on Etsy – Lisa Fine, Peter Dunham (who is English but lives in LA), Penny Morrison, etc. Put a kantha quilt or block print throw or secondhand British plaid or paisley wool oversize shawl across the back of the sofa, add some great pillows, and you’re set. Especially if you have a good wool Persian rug on the floor : ) . 

Do NOT be afraid to use color and mix patterns. That French Coco Chanel thing about taking one thing off to be stylish? Forget it. If you want the English style at home or in your garden, add one more comfy pillow inside, and squeeze in another perennial outside!

A much less ornate and goes-with-everything style for dining chairs that some prefer is the “bar back” style, also called Trafalgar or George IV. And very easy to change the fabric on the seats. 

One good thing is that hardly anyone wants antique, vintage, or reproduction mahogany, oak, etc. wooden furniture. In the industry, it’s referred to as “brown stuff” and it’s sadly unpopular with customers. But that makes it much easier to find and more affordable to buy for those of us who do love the furniture and European style in general.

This is going to be a long story, so bear with me. My decor has always been blue and white with a bit of green or yellow thrown in but a few years ago I inherited some big abstract art pieces that are family heirlooms. They are red, green and gold and don’t fit well with my traditional decor so it’s been a headache even though I absolutely adore them.

I saw that Pntreath et. al. used a lot of red, so I’ve been experimenting with red kanthan cloth and red and gold pillows to see if I can get the living room to look right. I’m actually really happy with it. My one misstep is that I recovered  in a red stripe and added red pillows and I think that’s too much red. I’m going to leave it during Christmas because it’s very festive, but I want to tone it down next year. 

So thanks for the recommendations. I’ll see if I can find some beige fabric and pillows with just a bit of red embroidery.

What is a Modern Quilt?

Modern quilts are made lots of ways. Perhaps that's the appeal of the genre.  It seems there's something for everyone within modern quilting.

It's hard to say when exactly  modern quilting as we know it began, but I found a pin with a quilt dated 1963 (you can see it on my Pinterest board here) that I feel is really modern, and that's all I've found so far.

I'm not sure that quilting is cataloged as much as other art forms, so there's really not much on the internet that I could find which tracks that quilting periods. Maybe I'll have better luck at the library. Anyways, I'm tentatively putting modern quilting in the '60's for now. Maybe if you have another date you can share with us in the comments!

Modern quilting has a few obvious tenets: the forms don't have as much traditional structure as the quilts that came before them, there is more improvisation, and of course there is the inclusion of modern fabrics in the mix.

Basically, a modern quilt is a non-traditional quilt. There are so many types that I don't want to restrict your idea of the modern quilt genre by getting to specific. I've found many sub-sets of modern quilts on the internet, including updated versions of older quilts made new by color and size arrangements.

Say, for example, that someone makes wedding ring quilts. They are a traditional quilt, but the quilt could be made modern with a non-traditional color arrangement and alterations to the size and structure of the rings. They could also use modern art fabrics to make it modern, which are the kinds put out by Art Gallery Fabrics and Michael Miller. They are beautiful non-traditional prints that tell a story.

Some of the sub-sets that I include in my list of modern quilt types are:

Improv Quilts: these are a genre that I discovered relatively recently, and so far the improvisational quilts that I have found have not ceased to amaze me with their creativity. My favorite place to look them up is on Pinterest.

Triangle Quilts: I feel like the modern approach to triangles warrants its own sub=genre. There are some simply amazing ideas around how to work the triangle so that it looks updated. Perhaps the most notable one floating around the internet is the elongated isosceles that has become a hallmark of the modern movement. But there are others, like the equilateral triangle and the equilaterals within an equilateral, that I think will be getting more attention soon.

Flying Geese: I put the modern flying geese quilts in their own category. They really take my words away, they look so artful. Definitely worth a Pinterest search, if you have the time.  I go with "Modern Flying Geese Quilts" when I want to find some for my Pinterest board.

Strip Quilts: These are really showcased well by some of the modern quilt companies. Of a Kind  carries what I think are just genius pieces by Thompson Street Studios. They often remind me of paintings with the way the colors are laid out.

Log Cabin Quilts: Modern log cabin quilts don't have to be perfectly straight or even between blocks. They are really characterized well by some of the later (and current) Gee's Bend quilts.

There are so many more I couldn't list them all, but those are the types I see most often floating around the internet.

I also really love the modern kantha-type quilts, where pieces are randomly arranged in square or rectangular shapes, but I have a hard time describing that as a category. The visual appeal is timeless, and the heavy stitching adds so much texture that you just want to curl up with them for hours. They tend to have a lot of different colors in them, but that's not always the case.

There's another element to modern quilting besides just the piecing and colors though. The actual quilting is different in a lot of modern quilts. Colored threads, free=motion quilting, and special shapes within shapes are all hallmarks of modern quilting. Modern wholecloth quilts sometimes have a more edgy look as well. The quilting can contrast a lot more in all these areas than it does in more traditional quilting.
