Photo: Ahmed Ramzan/ Gulf News Image Credit: Dubai: Sparing 30 minutes for yourself, for your health, is doable and if you still can’t do it, consider giving up 30 minutes of social media or watching TV, residents said. There’s no excuse not to be active and to keep fit in the emirate as Dubai kicked off its third Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) on Friday afternoon. Fitness Villages at Kite Beach and Festival City Mall gave residents a chance to sweat it out and flex their muscles with the whole family as the emirate transforms into the world’s only “city gym” that will run until November 16.

Photo: Ahmed Ramzan/ Gulf News Launched in 2017 by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council, the Dubai Fitness Challenge encourages residents and tourists alike to devote 30 minutes each day to do any form of exercise for 30 days. The aim is to make exercise an everyday part of their lives. Drenched in sweat after a spinning class with the beach in the background are siblings Arif and Tahira Baig from Pakistan. The duo completed the whole 30-minute class with ease as both are into cycling already, although this is their first time to be in a spinning class. “In Dubai, we do most of our activities indoors with AC. Here this is natural environment. The weather is also getting better by the beach,” Arif said as he sipped water after the class.

If I had worn my shoes, it would have been easier.” Arif said he tries to cycle every day and if he gets busy, he would give up something to trade that time with exercise. “That would be sitting in a room and surfing the internet. My job is stressful so I need to be active after office hours,” he explained. Tahira, a chef in Dubai, said: “I’m a cyclist so it’s easy for me. Though I am busy, we make time for our health by doing healthy activities. I don’t compromise. Exercise is already part of my routine.” Ryan Harvey, from the UK, who also participated in the Friday activities, said he now exercises four times a week despite his busy schedule.

But in my case, I prioritise,” the Dubai resident who works in IT, told Gulf News. “If anyone is finding it hard to allot 30 minutes for exercise, they can give up watching TV. They can fit 30 minutes of exercise in their day. They can go on a treadmill for 30 minutes and watch their favourite show on their phone,” he suggested. For Elisha Nijhawan, an Indian events manager, exercise has become a regular part of her life as she has been participating in the DFC since it began in 2017. “It gives you the motivation to keep going and helps develop self-discipline. They offer free workouts already. Why would you go and pay when you can take advantage of these free offers here,” she said. Though she’s busy, she said she’s able to make time for exercise by doing one thing.

Dress
Men
Arab dress for men ranges from the traditional flowing robes to blue jeans, T-shirts and business suits. The robes allow for maximum circulation of air around the body to help keep it cool, and the head dress provides protection from the sun. At times, Arabs mix the traditional garb with clothes.
Thobe In the Arab states of the Persian Gulfmen usually wear their national dress that is called "thobe" but can be also called "Dishdasha" (Kuwait) or "Kandoura" (UAE). "Thobes" differ slightly from state to state within the Gulf, but the basic ones are white. This is the traditional attire that Arabs wear in formal occasions.
Headdress The male headdress is also known as Keffiyeh. Headdress pattern might be an indicator of which tribe, clan, or family the wearer comes from. However, this is not always the case. While in one village, a tribe or clan might have a unique headdress, in the next town over an unrelated tribe or clan might wear the same headdress.
Tumblr media
•Checkered headdresses relate to type and government and participation in the Hajj, or a pilgrimage to Mecca.
•Red and white checkered headdress – Generally of Jordanian origin. Wearer has made Hajj and comes from a country with a Monarch.
•Black and white checkered headdress – The pattern is historically of Palestinian origin.
•Black and grey represent Presidential rule and completion of the Hajj.
Guthra (headdress) in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf The male headdress in the Gulf states is called Guthra and it is different in each country (size and shape). It is usually worn with a black cord called "agal" that keeps the guthra on the wearer's head.
•The Qatari guthra is heavily starched and it is known for its "cobra" shape.
•The Saudi guthra is a square shaped cotton fabric. The traditional is white but the white and red (shemagh) is also very common in Saudi Arabia.
•The Emirati guthra is usually white and can be used as a wrapped turban or traditionally with the black agal.
Women
Adherence to traditional dress varies across Arab societies. Saudi Arabia is more traditional, while Egypt is less so. Traditional Arab dress features the full length body cover (abaya, jilbāb, or chador) and veil (hijab). Women are only required to wear abayas in Saudi Arabia. In most countries, like Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Egypt, the veil is not prevalent.

Dubai Customs And Traditions In Our EYES
History
Once populated by Bedouins Desert, Shepherds in the arid mountains and pearl fishermen, today Dubai owes its prosperity to oil. The main port of the Gulf from 1870 to 1940, and the hub of the pearl trade and other products of the region, Dubai is experiencing rapid economic development with the discovery of black gold. The Dubai Reserves were discovered in 1966, the first exports started in 1969.
It was at this time that Britain announced its withdrawal from the region. In 1971, the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al-Qawain, Ajman, Ras al-Khaima and Fujairah formed the federation of the United Arab Emirates.
Engaged in a diversification of its unprecedented economic activities (international finance, free zones, re-export, tourism), Dubai anticipates the planned disappearance of oil.
Craft
Do not expect to find a local handicraft inherited from the Bedouins. The handicrafts found in the old city Souks or tourist hotels are mostly imported from neighboring countries (Pakistan, Iran, and Oman). From hookahs to decorated metal trays to leather slippers, the items and products available are nothing special.
In general, visitors bring from Dubai boxes of dates, gold, Pakistani and Indian fabrics, spices, Iranian rugs, Iranian caviar (depending on the price evolution!), or consumer electronics.
Holidays
Since September 1, 2006, weekend days are Friday and Saturday for all government institutions, as well as for some private companies.
National Day is December 2nd each year. It commemorates the creation of the United Arab Emirates Federation.
Religion
In the United Arab Emirates, the official religion is Islam. Dubai has a large number of mosques. Prayer rooms are even installed in shopping malls to perform one of five daily prayers between two shopping.
The city also has two Christian churches: St Mary's (Roman Catholic) and Holy Trinity (Church of England).
Customs & Savoir
Dress Code:
The men wear a long white cotton long-sleeved garment, which falls to the ankle, known as dishdasha , gandourah or kandoura . It is the most common traditional garment in the United Arab Emirates. It is adapted to the religious beliefs of the region and the hot weather. In winter, dishdashas may be darker and thicker.
As for Emirati women, they also wear a dishdasha , a long-sleeved dress often embroidered with gold, silver or bright colors.
In general, Dubai is a cosmopolitan city, and everyone is used to seeing strangers. All the fashions, all the styles of clothing coexist so without problem, in a spirit of tolerance. However, out of respect for your guests, it is advisable to wear proper clothing. Short sleeves and Bermudas are tolerated in hot weather, as well as swimsuits at the beach and at the pool. Women must however prefer the one-piece swimsuit to the two-piece. In mosques, pants, long sleeves and scarves on the head for women are de rigueur. Women are sometimes asked to wear an Abaya.
Greetings:
The best way to greet a man is to shake his hand up. A man shaking the hand of a Muslim woman (and vice versa) is considered unacceptable in most circles.
Pics:
Avoid photographing members of local authorities, Muslim women, military installations and official buildings.
Sensitive topics:
Do not criticize Islam, local authorities, or Palestine (the United Arab Emirates is pro-Palestinian).

Why is Snoop Dogg wearing this?
Why is Snoop Dogg wearing this?
Saudi Arabian fashion designer Hatem Al-akeel is making his name by giving the traditional Arab thobe a makeover. Called a dishdasha in Oman and Kuwait, and a kandoura in the United Arab Emirates, the thobe is a long-sleeved, ankle-length tunic. Often teamed with a colorful cotton keffiyeh headdress, it’s standard formal attire in the Arabian Peninsula — the equivalent of a Western-style suit.
