First Look

Maxwell could see one of his Blighters hovering. Judging by the uneasy look on the man's face, he had bad news to report. Some new demand from Starrick, no doubt. Maxwell tried not to let the irritation show as he waved at his actors to take five while he went over to see what the Blighter wanted.

“Sir, we've lost Kaylock's train.”

“What do you mean, you lost it?” Maxwell demanded. The man cringed at the harsh tone, but forced himself to keep talking.

“Well, sir, there was a gang war, and Kaylock put up his train in the bet.”

Maxwell's lips pulled into a frown. A gang war? Since when was there any gang in London other than his own? There had been factions before but they were soundly crushed under his direction. “So when you say we lost the train, what you mean is we lost Kaylock,” he summarized. “This other gang killed him.”

“Right, sir.”

Maxwell just shook his head. Well, that one was all on Starrick; he was the one who insisted on appointing Kaylock as leader of Whitechapel. Poor judgment, obviously, as Kaylock was so full of himself he'd bet a train in a gang war. But knowing Starrick, he was going to blame the Blighters for this and crack down on them even harder. Lucky that Kalock was dead now, because Maxwell would've been tempted to kill the man himself.

“Who defeated him?” Maxwell wondered.

“Some new gang calling themselves the Rooks. The leader calls himself Jacob Frye.”

“Interesting.” He wondered if the name was in honor of the bird or the chess piece. Either way, he was intrigued. For a gang to show up out of nowhere and take out one of Starrick's gang leaders, someone Maxwell personally trained, was incredibly impressive. He would have to keep an eye out for this Jacob Frye.

He kept his ears open for any news on the Rooks and any chance of seeing their leader in person. The rule of the theater was “show, don't tell”, after all.

He was strolling along the Thames when he spotted a fight between his Blighters and someone else. He drew a little closer to see what was going on. It looked like there were about five of them all struggling to take out a single man. Maxwell watched with more interest now. This man blocked and ducked every attack, breaking through any guarding his opponents put up. It was almost like watching a dance of death, such finesse and grace and power.

The man turned so Maxwell could get a good look at his face. He was struck by the wild fierceness in that face, so young and so full of fire. There were two scars cutting into his skin and a fine bit of stubble along his jaw. The young man flashed a smile; it looked absolutely devilish. That look and the enthusiasm this man put into the fight seemed to say he was enjoying himself, that he found the whole thing fun.

Maxwell had never seen anyone so magnificent in his life.
