The Girls Role models

Anaya - Asima Chatterjee, an Indian female Organic Chemist. She was the first female scientist to be elected as the General President of the Indian Science Congress Association. She researched and helped develop anti-epileptic drugs and anti-malaria drugs.

Camden - Marion Ross was a chemist from Scotland. During the Second World War she was a female scientist working for the Admiralty which was very rare at the time. She was based at Rosyth docks and she led a team involved in hydrodynamics.

Kalifa - Mae Jemison was the first black female astronaut and is and engineer. She did work with NASA before her shuttle launch included launch support activities. Jemison logged 190 hours, 30 minutes, 23 seconds in space. She also served as head of the Black Students Union in college.

Isabelle - Athene Donald is a female physicist. She is a Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Cambridge. She was Director of Cambridge University's Women in Science, Engineering and Technology Initiative.

Kalifa’s Backstory - Part 3

Kalifa couldn’t stop smiling the next morning. She did it. She really did it. Even though she had barely gotten any sleep the night before she felt like shouting and dancing. Of course she couldn’t. Her mom would find that suspicious behaviour for a Monday morning. Especially since usually she could barely pull herself out of bed most mornings.

All through school Kalifa planned what she was going to do on NASAs mainframe once she got home. Her teachers noticed her more absent than normal stares. Her friends noticed how quiet she was. And everyone noticed her massive smile.

At diner time she ate as fast as she could. Her brothers took this as a competition and the kids were done the meal faster than they ever had. At first Kalifa worried this might tip her parents off to the fact that something was off but they were more concerned about making sure none of their children choked.

Finally, FINALLY, Kalifa logged onto her computer and open NASAs web page. She found files that need higher clearance, she found boring files on protocols. She found interviews for potential astronauts and scientists and imagined seeing her self on that list. She looked for proof of aliens. Eventually she settled on satellite feeds that showed distant planets with foreign terrain, and Kalifa felt at home.

Kalifa’s Backstory - Part 1

Kalifa glared at the countdown on her watch. She could hear her brothers shouting outside and tried to block them out. She only had 5 minutes left to breakthrough Paulo's firewall and she had no intention of losing their bet. She chewed a fingernail as she continued to type. Kalifa broke into a smile as her screen flashed up letting her know she had completed Paulo's challenge. As She paused her timer and opened a tab to google translate to let Paulo know her time Kalifa found her face in a permanent grin.

Kalifa sat down at the dinner table between her older brothers. She smiled at the vase of Celosia her father must have picked for her mother. “What were you up to Kalifa?" Her dad asked as he handed her a plate of Tsire. "She was talking to her boooooyfriend in Brazil." Azi, her oldest brother cooed. Kalifa punched her brother in the shoulder. "I was not. Paulo was debugging some of my code and I was seeing if I could hack his firewall." Kalifa replied glaring at her brother. "Well, did you?" Kalifa's mother asked as she joined the family at the table, putting her work files down to touch the flowers in the centre of the table. Naal, the middle of her three older brothers grabbed the two cornrow buns on the top of Kalifa's head and shook her head. "Course she did, she could hack into anything." He told his mother. "She could hack into something cool like the FBI or NASA or NATO or the government!" Ramath chimed in. Kalifa's mother sighed. "Please don't listen to your older brothers, I'm sure you could hack anything you put your mind to Zuma but that doesn't mean you will, right?" Kalifa agreed but she had already set a plan in her mind. Hacking into NASA wouldn’t be to hard, and as long as she didn’t set off any rockets there really would be no harm done.

Natalee: Since Anaya and Kalifa don't speak English I will translate for a while but I would like you all to learn each other's languages eventually. Why don't you introduce yourselves and tell us why you are here.

Kalifa (translated from Hausa): I'm Kalifa, I code and hack. I was brought here for hacking into NASA on a dare.

Anaya (translated from Hindi): Hello I'm Anaya, I study biology. I broke into a government lab.

Isabelle: I'm Isabelle Harris. I'm a physicist and an engineer. I'm here because my neighbors thought I was making a bomb in my backyard.
