Yeah, I know... They're a lot haha. As you can see, I haven't draw them much... I'm still redesigning and creating some of them so, so far, I mostly just have half body references? And some information and facts on a private document and lots of notes... My OCs life is as messy as mine as you can tell ahaha

Every Kaleido Star Girl - 15-16/?

I just finished Kaleido Star, a 2004 production conceived and directed by Junichi Satou, who was also one of the directors of Ojamajo Doremi (and parts of Sailor Moon and Princess Tutu). I liked it a fair bit and would definitely recommend it. Here are some scattered thoughts.

Probably the most important thing that this show pulled off really well was selling the acrobatics as impressive. Any given battle shounen protagonist, your Narutos and what have you, could pull this stuff off no problem so as a relatively realistic acrobatics showcase it has to distinguish itself somehow. Kaleido Star does this in part through it’s really dynamic feeling movement, the animation is really great and even when they had to bust out some stills I got a really good sense of the energy of a performance. However, I think the main thing that makes the acrobatics in this show so exciting to watch is one of the same reasons why acrobatics like these are exciting to watch in real life, there’s no safety net and the stakes are sky high. I was absolutely blown away by how believably high the stakes could be at all times, just about every episode I deeply felt the possibility of a character messing up an entire live performance, and in some of the stunts that were given more screen time I was seriously concerned about a character getting a career ending injury or dying. There are a couple maneuvers that look entirely effortless, and I think if I just saw them as part of some compilation removed from the show they wouldn’t be all that standout, but just through the context of knowing how brutal the training was and the very real possibility that these guys can mess up big time (as they often do) they become some of the most amazing feats I’ve ever seen in anime.

The gags and comedy here are also top knotch. We got some real good faces, which is always something I appreciate, but there’s also a ton of nice little background comedy, like seeing Fool’s suffering off to the side somewhere when other things are happening. The fast paced gags and background jokes also contribute a lot to the dynamic and animated feel of the show. There’s also just somethings that appeal directly to my sensibilities, like how the two in Anna’s clown troupe are named Hannah and Barbara (maybe it’s a coincidence, but boy did it crack me up).

One negative thing that I do have to note is how absolutely excruciatingly frustrating of a watching experience this show becomes starting a little after halfway through and ending about 8-10 episodes before the conclusion. I would say this is a better kind of frustrating than it could be, where say mecha protagonists often spend a lot of time anguishing over whether to pilot the mech when everyone already knows they’re eventually going to do it and they’re basically just spinning their wheels before a known conclusion, the anguish of the protagonist of Kaleido Star doesn’t have an easy answer that the audience is likely to come to beforehand and so you kind of relate to the process of finding an answer that you came to yourself more. Media is able to create all kinds of different emotions, and I think it is important to acknowledge extremely negative emotions like this in media too, but oh goodness is it just not fun to watch and it goes on for so long with no reprieve at all. It all leads up to a fantastic and satisfying conclusion but I wouldn’t be surprised if more than one has dropped the show here. I’m still high off of the ending and the suffering is becoming a bit of a fading memory already, so I guess it was a tradeoff worth making (I feel bad for people watching it as it aired though), and despite my major grievance it definitely seems like a show that’s I’ll remember fondly.
