You’re the Kalire to my Chooda
Becoming a desi bride is one of the most bitter-sweet moments known to the human experience. On one hand (or wrist haha) you are going out to start a new life with the love of your life while on the other you are leaving your childhood home, family, and memories.
In order to commemorate this transition, many traditions were instilled in our customs to maintain a sort of invisible string between the newly-wed and her loved ones. One notable practice which seems to be growing with time would be the Kalire-Chooda ceremony, a tradition started by Punjabi families but adopted by many other ethinic groups.
For this event, the bride’s closest female friends and family members come together to adorn the woman of the hour with bangles and strings to symbolize their love for her that would always remain a part of her life, no matter the corner of the world she resides in.
(pic courtesy: https://www.shaadisaga.com/blog/best-rustling-kaleera-shots-for-the-bride-selected-by-our-expert)
It is usually the maternal uncle and his wife’s responsibility to initiate the ceremony by gifting the bride a set of 21 bangles of ivory and red color. The pieces are then placed on both henna-adorned hands after a quick bath in milk and rose water (a way to purify the set of jewelry).
The ceremony is then taken over by the mother and any close female members companions of the bride, who tie on the show-stopping golden trinkets known as kalire [also spelled kaleere or kaleerein (plural)].
The strings that are ties represent the unbreakable bond between the bride and her loved ones.

The kaleerein are traditionally made of metal or gold materials, but many modern recreations include them to be made entirely of flowers or made out to be a bit daintier and aesthetically in coordination with the rest of the bridal look.

But no matter the material or design of the piece, kalire will continue to be one of the most symbolic and meaningful pieces a bride could add to her look.

The Style And Glamour Of Celebrity Weddings – The Ladies – Deepika Padukone
Continuing the series on our celebrity brides, we are now moving onto the absolutely gorgeous Deepika Padukone, who is the newest entrant into the world of matrimony. As someone who is extremely rooted in her traditions and family values, Deepika Padukone knew that she wanted all the traditions to be followed. So, before she would exchange her vows with fellow Bollywood celebrity Ranveer Singh, she chose to have a traditional pooja. For this pooja, she chose to look simple and wore an orange kurta with a cream coloured churidar. She matched the outfit with an orange coloured dupatta with a gold border and a small gold print all over.
Like her contemporary Anushka Sharma, Deepika also chose Italy as her wedding destination and kicked things off with a mehendi ceremony. The light pink of her outfit matched the rosy hue that the bride to be had on her face. The outfit had embroidery in the same colour, making the outfit look simple, yet elegant. The edges of the dupatta had a darker shade of pink, and Deepika chose to team it with a similar coloured woollen stole.
For another one of her pre-wedding ceremonies, Deepika chose to go with an off tissue saree in pale gold, over which she wore a dupatta of the same colour and material. She teamed the same with traditional kundan work jewellery and the jasmine garland on her hair bun, completed the south Indian look for her!
Because Deepika is from Karnataka, specifically the Konkan region of Karnataka and Ranveer comes from a Punjabi hertage, there were two types of weddings – one south Indian, and one north Indian. For her south Indian style wedding, Deepika was the quintessential south Indian bride, resplendent in a deep red Kancheepuram saree and designer Sabyasachi gave her a veil in tissue, which also had a gold brocade border. The traditional jewellery and the jasmine flowers on her hair made her look gorgeous!
For her Punjabi style wedding, she was yet again traditional, but this time she was a traditionally Punjabi bride. Yet again, she went with the most bridal colour, red, but this time, it was a deeper red. As is common for Punjabi brides, Deepika also chose to go with gota work, but what made her outfit truly coutoure was the embroidery on her dupatta, which said ‘sada saubhagyavati bhava’ (a blessing of eternal matrimonial bliss). Her look was complete with the traditional red chooda and kaleerey.
And then there was the Bangalore reception, for which Deepika chose to dress up in a stunning pale gold silk saree, the pallu of which, she left long, almost like a train for a wedding dress. It was interesting to note that she chose a full sleeved blouse with the saree, which also had a slightly high neckline. She chose to add colour to the outfit with her red chooda and green emerald jewellery.

Ethnic wear can be donned in multiple ways considering the array of designs and patterns we have today. Each garment is a work-of-art in itself and speaks volumes about the designer. If you are one of those who absolutely loves ethnic wear, then you must visit thehlabel.com.
Here at thehlabel, there’s something for everyone. Right from unique silhouettes to quirky prints and colours, it’s all there. Out of the many ethnic collections, Shagan Sajda is distinctively one of the most stunning ones.
The collection takes its inspiration from kaleeras (metal tassels used in Punjabi weddings). The kaleeras are embroidered with gold thread which instantly glam up the look of the attire. Garments from this collection include flowy tunics, kurtas, long jackets, lehengas and saris.
The bright orange and rose gold colour used in each garment brings out the true beauty of each the silhouette. Crafted from raw silk, natural crepe, cotton-silk and net, every garment is a unique piece. You can very easily put these garments together and dress to any wedding or a party. This year all you have to do is pave your way to some of the best ethnic wear available.
Bring out your creativity by styling different ethnic outfits together. You could keep it simple by wearing a smart pair of kurta, patyala and a heavy dupatta or you could jazz up your look by donning a long jacket over it. Go with a little shimmer makeup, red lips and golden jootis to complete the look.
It’s time to play around with different styles to come up with your own unique look.
