Making Art Public: 50 years of Kaldor public art projects. Project 19 Tatzu Nishi: War And Peace And In Between After emigrating from Japan to Berlin, Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi was awestruck by the sheer number of public monuments and statues that populate the streets of European cities. Often these colossal towering statues are so familiar that they go unnoticed by city residents. Nishi enclosed Gilbert Bayes’ two larger-than-life equestrian sculptures outside the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ entrance within room-like structures, decorated inside; one as a domestic bedroom, and the other a living room. The idea of the monuments was reversed so that what was outdoor became indoor, and what was public and remote became intimate and private. Created to be viewed from a distance, from plinths that raise them above our heads, these monuments could now be encountered face to face. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublic #StayAtHomeModel #TatzuNishi #WarAndPeaceAndInBetween (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9fGlpvBTbH/?igshid=13mwiv9otyis4

My final Throwback to The Kaldor Public projects exhibition from pre-global pandemic times (I truly yearn for those days spent visiting museums... and again, maybe someday we will again) I really miss that. Project 10: Jeff Koons, created “Puppy” outside Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 1995 as Project 10, celebrating 25 years of Kaldor Public Art Projects. Created as a symbol of love and happiness, Puppy stood 12.4 metres high on the harbourside, carpeted in flowering blooms like a monolithic topiary. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #JeffKoons #JeffKoonsPuppy #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inswpirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublic #StayAtHomeModel (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFDsUxnjwfy/?igshid=1d6ubo6lp2riv

Throwback to pre-pandemic days spent going to museums (maybe someday we will again) I really miss that. PROJECT 11: Sol Lewitt Wall pieces for Project 11 incorporated vast bands of gloss and matt acrylic blacks and undulating wave-like forms painted in bright primary and secondary colours. Coining the term ‘conceptual art’, Sol LeWitt is considered one of the most influential artists of his time. From 1968 to 2007, Lewitt created 1200 wall drawings, reducing his art-making process to a bare vocabulary of lines, curves, geometric shapes and primary colours. LeWitt coined the phrase conceptual art and once wrote ‘ideas can be works of art’ giving greater importance to the idea behind his work rather than it’s execution. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inswpirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublic #StayAtHomeModel #SolLewitt #project11 (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFDpu_pD-Ts/?igshid=5gyheezqga1

Vincent and Donald (Happy Birthday) (2018) by Vincent Namatjira The painter Vincent Namatjira is from the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) aboriginal community in Australia. His portraits of inept, buffoonish, deceptively, and deceitful international political leaders disarm viewers with their humour while hitting home with their depictions of issues regarding, global consumerism, colonialism, and geopolitics; and their impact upon the marginalised and disenfranchised. The powerful visual statement of the disconnect between the world’s rich, powerful, corrupt, duplicitous white leaders and the poor, displaced, indigenous peoples of every continent. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublic #StayAtHomeModel (at Chez What?) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-B9B1xjK5b/?igshid=17ix4vet84bjx

Making Art Public: 50 years of Kaldor public art projects. an exhibition of 34 ephemeral projects, creatively re-imagined and presented together for the first time; (always free to the public). PROJECT 24 MICHAEL LANDY: Acts of Kindness This project debuted 23 September – 23 October 2011 Installation in lower Martin Place and 200 sites across the CBD, Sydney. To represent the original art work/installation a table was placed inside of the cube with coloured post-it notes and pencils and visitors were asked to write positive messages and place them on the walls.* *because it was so crowded I neglected to read the directions and initially I wrote something stupid/rude before I realised my mistake and removed it... (but it was pretty funny) Acts of Kindness explored the meaning of kindness in today’s fast-paced world, focusing on the simple everyday gestures of compassion and generosity that occur throughout the city streets and often go unnoticed. Stories of kindness were collected from people across Sydney to form the basis for Landy’s new artwork. Landy created a 13-metre installation in lower Martin Place, mapping the Sydney CBD and indicating where the 200 stories of kindness were placed throughout the city streets. Landy adapted the visual language of mapped directions, store logos and urban street signage that characterise the commerce and business of the Sydney city streets, to present his own interpretation of the city, focusing on the social interactions of its inhabitants and their stories. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublicfiftyyearofKaldorPublicArtProjects #StayAtHomeModel #michaellandy (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-B7OCijSps/?igshid=1verluxm0dfw0

Making Art Public: 50 years of Kaldor public art projects. an exhibition of 34 ephemeral projects, creatively re-imagined and presented together for the first time; (always free to the public). Project 34 Asad Raza Absorption, created by Asad Raza, was presented by Kaldor Public Art Projects and Carriageworks on 3 – 19 May 2019 at Carriageworks, Sydney. This monolithic slab made from a composite material is a representation of the original installation. Absorption brought the ground beneath us into the foreground, drawing our attention to the living and changing nature of soil. The work constituted almost 300 tonnes of organic and inorganic material, including sand, silt, clay, phosphates, lime, spent grain, cuttlebone, legumes, coffee and green waste, combined into a new soil mixture or neosoil. Artist cultivators enacted this process of mixing, creating a new composite material that visitors were free to take for their own uses, allowing Absorption to continue to grow and be nurtured beyond exhibition space. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublicfiftyyearofKaldorPublicArtProjects #StayAtHomeModel (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Av2DFDR58/?igshid=1rlinuwrj61iy

PROJECT 23 JOHN BALDESSARI Your Name in Lights 8 – 30 January, 2011 Australian Museum façade, Sydney The work Baldessari created for the 23rd Kaldor Public Art Project, Your Name in Lights, continues to reveal the codes of media culture, drawing on ideas of fame in the modern world and the conflation of the roles of celebrity and artist. Using imagery taken from historic symbols of celebrity, such as Broadway neon and Hollywood lights, Baldessari gave around 100,000 participants the opportunity for give a glittering and sparkling but short-lived moment of fame. A supercharged variation of Andy Warhol’s prediction that in the future everyone will have their 15 minutes, Your Name in Lights lasts for just 15 seconds.  * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublic #StayAtHomeModel (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-AsyFVDATZ/?igshid=q73fydjopci4

PROJECT 04 MIRALDA the photographs shown are images captured at the original presentations of Coloured Bread, and Coloured Feast Miralda fused art and interaction in his edible sculptures and landscapes in the 1960s and ’70s and was one of the first artists to create large-scale spectacles and media events in public space. For Project 4 in Sydney he created two installations during September 1973, Coloured Bread, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Coloured Feast, with foods of every colour served to guests at the launch of the new John Kaldor Fabricmaker showrooms. The works were like nothing audiences had seen before, combining art and celebration to make edible art experiences. These photographs are the record of the two Sydney events: Coloured Feast on 18 September 1973,in Surry Hills and Coloured Bread 21 September – 4 October 1973 the Art Gallery of NSW. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublicfiftyyearofKaldorPublicArtProjects #StayAtHomeModel (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-AEWEwjA5c/?igshid=1s3yz9vrsmlh7

Making Art Public: 50 years of Kaldor public art projects. Art Project 17 Bill Viola’s Fire Woman and Tristan’s Ascension. Fire Woman depicts ‘an image seen in the mind’s eye of a dying man’, while Tristan’s Ascension portrays ‘the ascent of the soul in the space after death’. The drawing shown is charcoal drawing; a study for for the video: Fire Woman The video art works were previously shown as part of Kaldor Public Art Project 17 at St. Saviour’s Church, Redfern, 2008, and again for Project 21 at St. Carthage’s Church, Melbourne, 2010 Bill Viola has been experimenting with video art since the early 1970s, and has been instrumental in its development as a major contemporary artform. Viola’s unique style and imagery, expressed through his extraordinary range of works, has defined a new language for the moving image, using its fluid, ephemeral nature as a means to explore life and death, the reach and limitations of perception and cognition. In exploring universal elements of spiritual themes, his works often echo medieval and Renaissance paintings, seeming at once contemporary and timeless, meditations on the human experience. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublicfiftyyearofKaldorPublicArtProjects #StayAtHomeModel #billviola (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9_6RkNjira/?igshid=1eqbo25sbuqvr

Making Art Public: 50 years of Kaldor public art projects. Project 14 BARRY MCGEE for project 14 McGee transformed the old Metropolitan Meat Market into a cacophony of chequerboard shapes, urban characters and cast-offs, booming and colliding with sound and energy. Beginning his career in 1984 as a graffiti artist under the tag name ‘Twist’, Barry McGee became known for his signature droop-faced figures, vibrant optical patterns, tags, drips and doodles. In the 1990s he expanded his signature style into a museum context, creating extraordinary installations from amassed imagery, piles of derelict materials and objects, creating an entropic vision of the contemporary city. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublic #StayAtHomeModel #BarryMcGee #twist (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9rVI5zBzag/?igshid=60uzjs9yobub

Making Art Public: 50 years of Kaldor public art projects: PROJECT 13 UGO RONDINONE “If There Were Anywhere But Desert. Wednesday.” (2000) & “All MOMENTS Stop Here And Together We Become Every Memory That Has Ever Been.” (2002) Spanning a broad array of material practices and media, Ugo Rondinone’s works are often unsettling and deal with themes of isolation and disenchantment. At once distinct and interrelated, the works installed in this room cross-pollinate, shaping a single narrative. In the piece; If There Were Anywhere But Desert. Wednesday, the reclining clown appears bored and disaffected. In a similar vein of inversion and directionlessness, ‘all MOMENTS stop here and together we become every memory that has ever been.’ resembles a window, yet rather than opening onto a view, it reflects the interior space back onto itself in sombre black tones. * * * * * * * #supergorgeousness #instagay #helleaux #learningtosee #inspirationiseverywhere #instagrammer #videoart #appropriation #artfag #arthag #KaldorCollection #ArtGalleryOfNewSouthWales #MakingArtPublic #StayAtHomeModel #UgoRondinone (at Art Gallery of New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Z8zhyB6Q6/?igshid=saaf5t7z0vhz
