Kakslauttanen Hotel is an original resort surrounded by wild nature, located in the Saariselkä ski area of ​​Finnish Lapland, 250 km from the Arctic Circle. It is 5 km from Urho Kekkonen National Park. In winter, there is a Christmas atmosphere, ruled by Santa Claus and the Snow Queen, and from August to April you can catch the miracle of the northern lights in your lenses.

Kakslauttanen Hotel features glass igloos, traditional wooden chalets and the world's largest Finnish sauna. Built from thermal glass, the igloos have a bedroom with a glass roof and luxurious beds. The chalet includes a seating area, fireplace, private sauna and kitchenware. The resort has 2 restaurants serving Lapland specialties, including venison and grilled salmon. Fans of outdoor activities should try reindeer and husky safaris, as well as snowmobile rides.

The Northern Lights: A symbol of beauty or degradation?

I have chosen the Northern Lights as they are a symbol of both Greenland’s Inuit folklore and the environmental uniqueness that is a huge drawcard for its international tourism. 

Aurora Borealis occurs when solar particles collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, with the lights are the most visible from September to April (Greenland Travel, 2024). Greenland’s low population density and isolation mean it has little light pollution, creating the perfect stage to view the lights in all their glory (Tomlin, 2023). 

Inuit folklore differs regionally on the meaning of the Northern Lights, with Northern Greenlandic communities believing in the lights representing the souls of their ancestors guiding the living. 

Though it is clear why tourists are drawn to visit Greenland for this bucket-list activity, it can contribute to the broader overshadowing of Greenland’s rich contemporary culture as well as add to environmental degradation.
