I read a fic (this one!!) with post retirement kks & gai. There is a scene where they visit hokage naruto, and sauske is there, and it's ✨️uncomfortable✨️

Broke: Gai loved Kakashi first when they were children because Kakashi was everything he wanted to be: talented, respected, a genius in every word. He always admired it until it became something more.

Woke: Kakashi loved Gai first and harder because this was the only boy who fought with all his might to become noticed, and he achieved it through pure effort, without a hint of hatred towards anyone. That it exceeded his limits to the point where Kakashi had to stop to observe it, to admire for a moment the boy who wanted to reach him.

The one who when his friends were in risk, sacrificed himself to save them (the mission where the Chidori was created), the one who calmed him down in a panic attack, the one Kakashi looked for when he had free time.

How can you not fall in love with the only person who always welcomed you with a smile, when everybody feared you, who despite recognizing your mistakes and pointing them out to you, does not despise you? With the one who makes you laugh, the one who always notices you and invites you closer?

The only boy who was not envious of him, who had no hidden feelings for him. The man who grew up with him, the one who was always loyal and a good friend, the one who was never indifferent to his darkness.

gai tagging along for a bunch of kakashi and iruka’s dates to make sure iruka is treating his eternal rival well. though a lot of people find it weird and kakashi is worried that iruka will too — not because he’s embarrassed of gai, but because he likes iruka so much and he can’t be with someone who is put off by his best friend.

but when kakashi gets iruka alone and finally asks about it, iruka just laughs and points out that first of all anko made multiple threats against kakashi’s life if anything were to happen to iruka and stalked them for entirety of their first 5 dates.

then he smiles and his voice gets all soft and he tells kakashi that it makes him really happy to know that there are people who love kakashi enough to want to make sure that nobody mistreats him, that gai has been extremely encouraging and kind, and iruka is glad kakashi has a best friend like him.

and then kakashi feels stupid for worrying at all because this is umino “took a fuma shuriken to the back for naruto when the rest of the village still hated him” iruka, of course he doesn’t care if other people think it’s weird.
