“Is the positive upbringing of a person important to form healthy relationships?”

“Mysterious ba talaga ako? O nag-aadjust lang ako parati sa mga tao sa paligid ko?”, “Kaka-adjust ko ano na ba talaga ang totoong personality ko?”. These two questions boggle my mind every day as I find out that my classmates perceive me as mysterious because they can’t figure out my true personality.

Before diving into the topic, I would like to share that this topic resonates deeply within me. I grew up in a broken family, having to constantly visit each parent because we don’t live together. During my early childhood, I used to live with my mom and I was totally okay with that, it was also fine that I didn’t have my father by my side. Being raised by my mom was adequate, the way she cared for me, the values that she taught me, and how I was shaped as a person were alright.

Then after I reached the age of 10 or so, I can’t really remember what age really anymore, my mom had to leave the country to work overseas and be with her new husband as well. I wasn’t included in the trip, so my mother had to give me to my father and live with him. All I can say is that I regret living in the same household with my father, I wished that my mother had a choice to bring me overseas instead of giving me to my father, living with my father was a huge culture shock. A lot of the norms and values that my mother taught me, were being taught as well by my father but in a very unorthodox way that didn’t really fit me. This caused me to fight for what I think is right in the form of what is commonly viewed by the majority as retaliation or “pagrerebelde”.

With that out of the way, I would like you to ponder on how my childhood affected my current personality and my ability to connect with other people. Do you imagine that I am someone like a people-pleaser? Doing everything to make other people happy, or do you think that I’m someone who doesn’t give a care about other people only prioritizing one’s happiness and needs? Some people might imagine the first, and some would choose the latter, but the people who really know me might say a combination of both.

Based on that backstory, I personally agree that a positive upbringing is important for a person to be able to form healthy relationships with others. When I say relationships, I don’t only pertain to the romantic ones but as well as to platonic relationships and paternal relationships. Having a positive upbringing will help a child develop positive traits that are beneficial to have as a person. For example, If I was raised in a healthy and complete household, I would surely develop great communication skills, be able to trust others, and have great conflict resolution skills. However, being not in the ideal household, I was not able to develop all the positive traits and that left me troubled about how can I cope with this personal dilemma.

Due to my personal troubles, I was and currently pondering on how my childhood has affected me. I’m always overthinking things like “Ayaw ba nila akong makasama?”, or “Wait, masyado na ba akong umaasa sa ibang tao?”. These thoughts correlate with the possible negative effects of not having a healthy upbringing. The effects of a negative upbringing include: Codependency, it is where a person develops low self-esteem and a high desire for approval from other people. Being avoidant, people with painful pasts may become afraid to become close to other people. Lastly, having a controlling personality, these traits may be caused by their parents/guardians who are also controlling or abusive.

Discussing the effects of a negative upbringing, I’m going to focus on the two negative traits that I find the most interesting, Codependency, and Controlling Attitude. According to Meaghan Rice on Talkspace, the five most common causes of codependency are childhood neglect, overprotective parenting, emotional and physical abuse, permissive parenting, and substance abuse. We can see that all of these are factors that contribute to having a negative and unhealthy upbringing. The second negative trait is a Controlling Attitude, which is mainly caused by the parent or guardian having the same controlling attitude towards their child. As the child grows up, they unconsciously copy the attitude of their parent even in the smallest things without even realizing it.

Having these two negative traits, etc., makes the person have a strong sense of neediness, low self-esteem, poor communication skills, and as I’ve mentioned before, being a people-pleaser, and other more negative characteristics.

What I’m trying to really convey to everyone is that it is really important for an individual to have a healthy relationship with the family because it is what shapes the child and continues even throughout their adulthood. If ever you came from an unhealthy upbringing, it is up to us to stop the generational trauma. We need to become aware of the issues that we have, we can’t help other people let alone heal ourselves if we tolerate ourselves. I am encouraging everyone to seek help if they experience the problems that I stated in this post of mine. It doesn’t have to be from a professional, you can seek help from your family, relatives, or if you prefer, from your close friends.

Okay, I was thinking about it a bit more and wanted to show you all how big these extinct birds were.

Now, New Zealand is known for having many big birds that are much bigger than overseas cousins. Like the kakapo for example.

This little bird here is the heaviest parrot in the world, weighing in at around 2-4kg. This renders them flightless as their wings are not able to support their weight.

NZ also has other birds that frequent our skies and the ground, many of them large in size. Birds like the kiwi, which is small, but quite round, and is unique with its beak shape. It is also flightless. We also have the kea and kaka respectively. Also, the takahe, and its skinnier lookalike, the pukeko. So we have lots of big birds, and lots of diversity when it comes to our birds.

Which brings me to the moa.

This bird was 3x the size of modern day ostriches, the current largest bird. The biggest of them weighed around 230kg and were around 3.6m in height when their necks were stretched out.

So these things were massive.

Now, you probably think that these were the kings of the jungle. Nothing ate these, nothing went near these until humans rolled around.

You’d be wrong.

These massive birds were prey to one other:

The Haast’s Eagle.

Known as the ‘Man Eating Eagle’, this bird frequently hunted Moa, and didn’t mind snacking on humans (according to Maori history). These birds weigh in at an estimated 14kg, which doesn’t sound much, but keep in mind, a 4kg kakapo can’t fly. This is 14kg of pure death flying straight at you. To put this in perspective, no Eagle has exceeded 9kg in weight. This bird is around 40% bigger.

Though they had a smaller wingspan than some birds today (mostly vultures), it still spanned around 2.5-3m from tip to tip, which is around the same length as a bald eagle, or for the Australians out there, the wedge tailed eagle that lives in Aussie.

However, Haast’s closest living relative is not a wedge tailed eagle, as once thought, but rather, the little eagle or the booted eagle. These birds are much smaller, and means the Haast’s Eagle increased in size by 10-15% in around 1,800,000-700,000 years, which is incredibly fast for an evolution of a whole new species.

Back to their size. These birds were massive, and readily preyed on the biggest guys in town; the moa. We kiwis should almost be grateful that these huge sky hunters are extinct, or we may not be able to walk outside without being scooped up and carried off (I’m kidding, it sucks we don’t have these great beasts around anymore). Moa were massive, but these eagles were so strong that they killed moa simply by flying down at a speed of around 80km/h, and upon reaching their prey, were hitting them with the same amount of force as a concrete block dropped from an eighty story building.

6 years ago, I experienced my biggest failure, or what I thought to be the biggest. I failed a subject that wouldnt let me stay in the course that I was in during that time. I was so depressed that things werent going the way i wanted it to be. It wasnt how i planned it in my mind.

Failing that subject means that I will be having a hard time shifting to the course that i really wanted to be in. (i was in nursing that time, and I planned to shift to PT in the same university) No one will take a Transcript with a singko. Well, atleast that college in the university that i was in. I had zero idea on what to do with my life, I had nothing for myself. I can no longer stay in nursing because I cant proceed with the cut off system because i had 1 singko (also i really didnt want to lol) I only had 2 choices, either I shift to another course that is not PT or leave my dream university and pursue PT in a different school. I didnt like both so I didnt do anything. I was a mess.

Some would say, if you dont want to leave that university then you shouldve just shifted in another course.

My 2 cents:

Nursing wasnt my cup of tea and I failed because no matter how hard i try to study, things werent just working out for me. It isnt just for me exactly.

Therefore, if i chose to go to another one that i didnt like to be in, in the first place, then I wouldve just repeated the same story but im just in a different uniform.

and so I told my parents, I needed a break. I wanted to find myself and think about what i really want to do. I stopped attending college for a year. But i never heard anything dull from my parents. They just smiled at me and said “go ahead. Do what you need to do”

For a year, I did things for myself. Things happened. I had a roller coaster ride of unexpected scenarios, that luckily I was present and I was able to cover for it because I was on a hiatus. A lot of times i felt useless and “patapon” in that 365 days but there are days that I suddenly realize, aside from trying to find myself, I took a hiatus for some unknown reasons and it was already showing up one by one.

Failing and reflecting was new to me, I realized i felt so entitled even when i dont deserve it. Ive been living as a “what i see is what i get” and it wasnt healthy for me, not even for everyone.

The thing is, UST is my dream school and I dont want to leave UST, but also I couldnt stay. Ive been so stubborn, and it only gave me heartaches because what i want wont always work. I’ve reflected so much, and I asked myself a hundred times, will I really just let myself have this heartache, randomly cry at night and think that im not good enough? When I already have the answer in front of my face and all i have to do is explore new environment and have the courage to take it? And so i left.

I went to a school that i never saw, in a place that i was trying to avoid my whole life because it is damn far. But what kept me going? I started with a boring and uninteresting days, weeks and months in this school. But eventually, i met the most welcoming and undesrtanding people in my life. I had this genuine happiness that I wasnt able to get in my former school, in here, I felt that I belong. Professors were accomodating and remembers our name, even asks us how were doing everyday in the hallways. It was more than a community.

After 4 years, I never failed saying “buti nalang lumipat ako” “i went through all those sad times, to get this super saya experience with the realest barkada”. I met people who accepted me not because they were just simply open but because they feel the same. I even met someone who gave me so much to remember, crazy. Funny twists of fate.

Exactly a year ago. I failed a subject. For the first time in 4 years. One subject that held me in becoming an intern. One subject that separated me from my friends. I cried upon getting the results of my exams. The first time my friends saw me cry, i was bawling my eyes and pouring my heart out in the quiet halls of UG. I was crying, not because I failed, but because i cannot picture myself telling my parents that I failed one subject. I am ashamed to be giving them another burden, when im already at the age of giving them the life they deserve.

I cried and cried, until i finally gave my mom a call. I was nervous, but I had to do it.

By age 12, I was doing everything that my family couldn’t have ever imagined.

My father, though a shippie, never drank or smoked. So whenever there was an overseas guest who would gift a bottle of malt, it would straight go on the topmost rack of his cupboard. And later, I would sneak them out and the rest is another story for another day.

But this was a time when I was living two lives. One, who would spend most of his time dreaming of large concert arenas, stand in front of the mirror with a guitar in hand and sing Deep Purple, Springsteen, Led Zep, etc off tune, learn the Blues scale on the guitar, practice Lobsang Rampa, read Sartre and not understand a line while the other Anupam had no clue of this guy!

The other guy was and is still an ardent fan of Hindi cinema. So when I was growing up, Rajesh Khanna would still be on the cover pages of film magazines. I even saw the transition when Amitabh Bachchan took over the reigns of popularity and began to appear on the covers and Kaka, as Rajesh Khanna is referred to in the cine industry, sadly began to fade away into oblivion. And the audience too soon began to forget the first superstar of India. The man never got his due !

But something different too was happening other than Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan.  There were some really nice movies with Amol Palekar in the lead. I loved all of them.

And I had no clue that there was more hidden inside me !

Subhas Ghai announced Disco Dancer with Bappi Lahari doing the music and Mithun Chakraborty in the lead. Those days, the LP vinyl record would be released long before the release of the film. And Mithun Chakraborty was already a rising star with Surakhsha, Gun Master G9, etc.

The songs of Disco Dancer were already super hit in the masses with veteran singer Vijay Benedict riding high.

So I saved some money that I’d flick from my mother’s wallet and bought an LP of Disco Dancer.  That was the first time, my mother ‘too’ began to get suspicious.

This was also the time when we boys wanted to explore alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, barbiturates and so on. But we didn’t have much money to indulge.

I would often break into my dad’s rejected bunch of alcohol bottles but then we had to find a permanent way to buy ourselves stuff regularly!

Soon, Disco Dancer was released.

This was the era of Campa Cola. Also, all our sideburns had disappeared with Mithun Chakraborty kind of hairstyle; much to the disgust of my family. My father had even stopped talking to me when he saw me dancing to ‘I am a Disco Dancer’ on the streets.

An aristocratic Capt. Sen Gupta not only found this cheap but also had allergy to street-side gossip or ‘adda’ with friends.  We were not even allowed to go out of the house in flip-flops. And I was breaking all this. A rebel without a cause.

Opening day. Premier show of Disco Dancer.  We stood in the line 7  days in advance and had bought tickets for the premier.

The night before, all of us went to different cigarette shops and collected a huge pile of Campa Cola crowns. We filled our pockets with the crowns and headed for the premier.

Those days, nobody fisrked you with a metal detector. And we easily walked in and found our seats. We had bought seats in clusters of 3. So the trios had seats away from one another. All this was a part of the larger plan.

Disco Dancer opened with a thundering applause. And by the time the protagonist grew up dancing on a bridge in the middle of the night to ‘Jesus, Come back to Us’, the theatre went beserk with some vague nutcases dancing in the aisles.

So the story progressed and Jimi, the protagonist gets signed up and lo, and there was Mithun Chakraborty is glittery shimmery dazzling outfit singing, ‘Say D, say I……..Disco, Disco’. The audience went nuts. Absolutely nuts. Actually, one could hardly hear anything else but the commotion in the theatre.

Between all the cat calls and the whistles, we began preparing for our assault.

While the song was still on, the first trio who were seated a fit far from us took out the cola crowns and began to throw towards the screen. Soon, the other gang on our right too began to throw the crowns towards the screen. And then, it was our turn.

Soon,the audience began to throw coins thinking money was being thrown towards the screen in appreciation. This was an old tradition practised by ardent cine lovers.

The theatre was filled with with sound of the rain of cola crowns and currency coins. In each trio, we had a guy who we would bully. So it was their job to look around and gather all the coins in the commotion.

This process continued for all the songs. And by the end of the film, we had gathered enough money to go to nearby lakes while those kids who we would bully went to alcohol stores and bought some cheap rum.

And all this was happening when, as a guitar player, I was trying understand the genesis of R&b, Funk and Disco as an aspiring musician. Genenuely speaking, non of the Disco Dancer songs are in the genre of disco. They are straight on pop !

Thankfully, till his demise, my father had no clue about this vagabond, street urchin kind of a lifestyle that I was leading outside the house. And by the time, my family could gather, it was too late. The rebel had runaway from the house by then !

So you are absolutely right about Apu/Api and that they are equivalent words for Didi. However, they are largely prevalent in Bangladeshi households so checks out if your parents were in Dhaka. Use of Chacha/chachu instead of Kaka/Kaku may have similar reasons. In fact, there are even more family words that are different! Two that I can think of off the top of my head are Khala and Phuphu. Khala in Indian Bengali households is usually Mashi and Phuphu is Pishi. Similarly, Chachi is usually Kaki or Kakima. The main reason for this difference is the Urdu/Arabic influence on the Bengali spoken in modern day Bangladesh. Although, I'm hesitant to say whether Apu/Chacha/Khala/Phuphu is something all Bengali Muslims use or whether Indian Bengali Muslims prefer a different word. The reason for my hesitancy is largely because I grew up in an Indian Bengali Hindu household in a majority Hindi/Urdu speaking region and not in West Bengal. So if anyone reading this is an Indian Bengali Muslim or friends with/close to any Indian Bengali Muslims, please do add to this! But the gist is cultural and religious differences between Bangladesh and West Bengal definitely do show up in what is considered 'standard' in both countries.

The standard 'Bangladeshi Bangla' is usually referred to as 'Bangal Bhasha' (বাঙ্গাল ভাষা) in India. At some point in time (likely before the Partition/s of Bengal), perhaps there was less of a religious distinction considering that Bangal bhasha and its derivatives are also widely spoken in North East Indian states of Tripura, Assam, and some parts of Manipur, regardless of religion. I do have family in Assam though, so can confirm that the family members who do still prefer to speak Bangal still use Didi/Kaka/Pishi/Mashi/etc and their associated derivatives so the relationship name difference might very well be religious despite regional overlap. The 'standard Indian Bangla' likely developed from what used to spoken as a dialect by the Ghotis (ঘটী) who are native to West Bengal. This standard Bangla, as we very well see here may not be very standard among all Bengalis, but within India, it is what is used by - news channels/newspapers, government documents, movies made by the Indian Bengali movie industry (Tollywood), for colloquial use among Indian Bengalis, and more. However, literary works, and specifically older literary Bengali works use neither Ghoti Bangla nor Bangal Bhasha. Instead, they use what is considered a more refined form of Bangla known as Shadhu Bhasha (সাধু ভাষা) which has way more grammar technicalities, sounds much more polite, and might be incomprehensible to both me and you (unless you are really into Bangla literature, which I mean, good for you!) Although, nowadays, literary works, and especially works meant to be read by a wider audience don't use Shadhu Bhasha and instead just use the more colloquial Cholti Bhasha (চলতি ভাষা) which would instead be the standardized Ghoti Bengali in West Bengal and Bangal Bhasha in Bangladesh.

Maybe back in the day, before we were forcefully divided by the British, literary Shadhu Bhasha was the only thing that was one standard between all Bengali diaspora and each spoke their own dialect depending on their community/region/religion and that that was just clubbed under an umbrella term of Cholti Bhasha. Though, I'm no linguist so that also is completely a conjecture.
