Kaito Tenjo x Reader
"Heii, Haruto, I brought you something." As you rise the lift in the center of his room with a bag in hand, you greet the short, blue-haired lad.
"You did, but why?"
"Just what do you mean by 'why'? Because you're priceless to me." You stroke his hair as you move over next to him as he gazes out the wall-sized windows that encompass his bedroom and over looks the luminously reflected city.
'However, I doubt that you'll use it anytime anyway.' You ponder to yourself while you hand him the bag.
"It's certainly bright outside; it's almost as if the sun never set." You point out in attempts to strike up a conversation with the now-zombie-like child.
"[First Name], how is it that I am so special to you?" He holds the bag you gave him, his broad and golden eyes gravitate towards yours.
As you close your eyes, you scratch your face with a grin and chuckle awkwardly. "What exactly do you mean? Everybody has somebody special during their lives. Such as you and Kaito. You two are my special people, so is Orbital."
"Why?"
"Just 'cause." You open your eyes and shrug, sweat dripping from your brow as he stares at you blankly and unblinkingly. "You need to know, Haruto-"
"What exactly are you doing here?" You turn around to see Kaito enter the room via the elevator panel in the heart of the floor. His mechanical friend follows him as usual.
"I was just visiting Haruto."
"I told you nobody except family is permitted in this room."
"Heh? I'm practically family; are you suggesting Orbital is more family than I am? Who are you to say I'm not welcome in here? Haruto may be your brother, but I've been around him nearly as long as you have, Kaito." You huff and tap your foot with both palms on your hips.
"Do refrain from speaking to Master Kaito in such a manner, miss-missy!" Orbital chimes in.
"Orbital, c'mon, tell Kaito that I'm just as close to family to Haruto as he is. I was there when you were created, and I was there when Haruto first fell ill, which is far more than Dr. Faker has been-"
"Enough. I've heard more than needed. You are permitted to stay as long as I am able to speak with Haruto in peace." Kaito rolls his eyes and pushes by you, bending down to his younger brother's height. As he looks into his sibling's eyes, his demeanor softens.
"Hey, pal, how are you doing lately?"
"[First Name] has given me a present." Haruto reacts robotically, holding the bag up before his brother's face, his features expressionless.
"That's nice of her." Kaito gingerly nudges the bag down and away from his face. "Listen, I guarantee that I'll return you to normal, alright? Just hold on a bit longer for me." Kaito pats and caresses Haruto's hair.
"Aww, this is so cute." You whisper as you stand next to Orbital, a compassionate expression on your face.
"Master Kaito told you to shut- shut it." Orbital beeps out, but you have a feeling he's cheerful about the display before him as well.
"Kaito and [First Name], please report to my office at once." Mr. Heartland's voice rings through the building's speakers, catching both yours' and Kaito's attention.
You match your eyes with Kaito's and he nods. "I'm taking off now. But I won't be gone for long, Haruto." Kaito kisses the top of Haruto's head before standing up. His scowl appears once more and his eyebrows slant as he marches to the center of the room.
You follow suit, standing adjacent to him on the elevator platform that interfaces to Haruto's room from the lower floor and it begins to descend.
"Wait- wait for me!" Orbital surges onto the platform as well, clanging down onto the spot next to you.
—•-•-•—
"[First name], Kaito, thank you for coming." Mr. Heartland's strained and obnoxious voice greets you and Kaito as you enter his dimly lit office. The sliding doors automatically close behind you.
"What do you need Heartland?" Kaito questions pointedly. One of the only sources of light is a spotlight that shines on the swivel chair in which Mr. Heartland sits. He turns in his red chair and stands up, welcoming you both with open arms. "What? A man can't invite his favorite employees into his office without suspicion?"
"Not if it's you, sir." You admit honestly, a grin on your lips as you place a gloved hand on your right hip. "You're always up to something."
"Flattery doesn't work on me Miss [Last Name], but you can compliment me later." He laughs. "Right now I have something special in mind for you two."
"And you needed both of us?" Kaito's sharp reply is heard as he looks at the well dressed man in front of him.
"Of course! I need you two to find this man." He throws a picture of the guy to Kaito and he catches it between two fingers. You lean over and look at the photo in Kaito's fingerless gloved hand, tilting your head with a bemused pout.
"What's so special about 'em?" You ask, looking between the picture and Mr. Heartland. The arrogant man laughs.
"He has bypassed all of our hunters so far, so I have no choice but to send my best recruits."
"He seems pretty basic." You agree by pointing to the image. Kaito shoves the picture into your palm and scoffs as you invade his personal space, making you gasp and lean away.
"Are you saying you can't handle him?" Mr. Heartland gives a Cheshire grin.
"I was just saying. . ."
"I'll take care of it myself." Kaito cuts in.
"Excuse me? I'm still here, Kaito." You huff, puffing out your cheeks and look at your partner. He simply ignores your gaze.
"Nonsense! You have to bring [First Name]. You two are a team after all."
"She'll just slow me down."
"It is not up for discussion, you will go together. Now."
--•-•--
"Ho-ahh!" You can see the man you were given orders to hunt down, being thrown into the air after being attacked by Kaito's dragon. The man spins backwards onto the cement in the alley, his body rolling several times before his back crashes into a brick wall opposite the alley and he passes out.
"Your number is mine." Kaito states, reaching out of his white fingerless glove and rips the Number and soul from the man's body.
"Don't you think you're being too hard on him?" you ask, leaping off the lid of a nearby wooden crate. The only response you get from him is a glare and a sneer as he turns and starts walking away from you. "Hey Kaito, wait! Seriously, did I do or say something that upset you?"
"Why do you bother staying? You're a mediocre duelist at best and add almost nothing in collecting Numbers. You're too soft, too weak."
"Huh? What's wrong with you? You know, Haruto would be shocked if he saw how you treat people now—”
"Stop pretending you know everything about Haruto and me. You're a nobody, someone who just likes to stick your unwanted nose into other people's business."
'Ow. . .' Your brows deepen, you choke back tears and press a fist to your lower lip. When Kaito sees your reaction, he doesn't pretend to notice or care.
"I miss you Kaito!" You scream, lips trembling and tears streaming down your cheeks as you take a step towards him. He stops walking with his back to you and you can't see his expression. "I miss the way you used to laugh and smile and cry. I wish you would smile again— show some emotion— not like the sad grin you give to your brother. I want a sincere smile full of joy. I miss the old Kaito. . ."
The night is quiet except for the occasional beep of a passing vehicle every few minutes and the moans of the beaten man in the alley. You continue the onslaught of words, despite his nonchalant response.
"Don't you dare say that I don't know anything about you or Haruto. I love you two, so, so much. You have some nerve, you know that?" You wipe your eyes with your palms, an ugly cry escapes your lips. "I wish we could all go back to the way we were before this stupid hunt for numbers—"
"Come here." Kaito's command is almost muffled by your obnoxious cries, but you still manage to catch it. You sniff, looking up at him. His back is still to you, but you manage to see his hand out to his side, palm open and fingers spread invitingly.
'Is he. . ?'
"Before I change my mind."
You blink, a smile spreading across your lips as you look at his open palm. You let out a deep sigh before nodding to yourself and jump into a sprint with a laugh.
Perhap it's your optimism or blurred vision from the tears, but you swear you can see a smile flicker across his pale cheeks as you wrap your fingers around his.
"Thank you, Kaito."
